News from the Washington Humane Society
Flocking to the Rescue
By ChristieLyn Diller, Director of Marketing & Communications
On January 4, the United States Postal Service had a big
little issue – 106 little issues, to be exact. In a shipment
gone awry, 106 baby chickens destined for Blountsville,
Alabama ended up in Washington, DC. Knowing the chicks
would not survive an additional trip, the shipper transferred
ownership of the chicks to the Post Office.
What’s a Post Office to do with more than 100 chicks?
Call the Washington Humane Society (WHS), of course!
Director of Animal Control Field Services Raymond Noll
and Corporal Shawn Covington were quickly en route for
a fuzzy and feathered rescue.
It was all hands on deck when the box of chicks arrived.
Staff sprang into action, crafting a makeshift home for the
days-old babies equipped with heating blankets and lamps.
A special meal was swiftly mixed up and served with fresh
water. Our next step was integral for the chicks survival finding them an appropriate and loving home.
In Washington, DC, Animal Control Code makes private
ownership of these animals illegal. The search was on to find a
suitable home for all of the birds, outside of city limits.
Senior Humane Law Enforcement Officer Dan D’Eramo
quickly called his former employers, our friends at Farm
Sanctuary in Watkins Glenn, New York. On January 8,
Farm Sanctuary staff drove more than five hours to DC
on a mission to save every single one of the chicks. With
expert care and attention, Farm Sanctuary staff loaded
each baby into their rescue van, and prepared for their
journey north.
WHS is proud to report
that the chicks are
now safely at their
new home, a vast
and beautiful farm
in the picturesque
Finger Lakes region
of
upstate
New
York. Thanks to quickacting Officers and an
outstanding partnership
with Farm Sanctuary,
this rescue is just one
more example of our
commitment to saving
lives – no matter how
small, or how many.

The Inside Scoop
Spring is a time of new beginnings throughout the
District. For many, blooming cherry blossoms and
much-welcomed warm weather mark the season,
but the focus is a bit different at the Washington
Humane Society (WHS). While our facilities are at
or beyond capacity year-round, DC’s needy animal
population explodes in the spring. Our nation’s
capital is facing a crisis and our animals are paying
the price.
At WHS, hundreds of animals rely on our care
each and every day. We will always be here for
any animal in need, but we can’t do it without your
Lisa with Lila
help. This is particularly true as springtime abounds
with kittens, baby birds, and other infant animals, and our responsibility to ensure the
highest quality of care grows. The well-being of these, and all animals, relies in large
part on the involvement of our community.
Dedicated volunteers are in demand to clean and care for cats at our adoption
centers. Foster parents are needed to open their hearts and homes to our particularly
vulnerable animals, who need a period of healing or rehabilitation while they await
their permanent families. We need skilled people who can work with dogs on
behavior, training, and socialization. And because spaying and neutering is the single
best way to prevent future pet homelessness, we appeal to pet owners to make use
of our affordable services so their companion isn’t contributing to the problem.
Please consider what greater role you can play in protecting the future for our animals.
Do you have room in your vehicle to transport injured wildlife to a rehabilitation
center? If you are a runner or a walker, you can join the People and Animals Cardio
Klub (PACK) and bring one of our adoptable dogs along with you for a run! Or
perhaps you have a few hours to take WHS dogs for a fun walk outside one of our
adoption centers, giving them exposure to fresh air and human companionship? And if
you love unique Washington events, Fashion for Paws, DC’s signature fashion event,
is just around the corner.
We invite each of you to join with
us to create a compassionate
present and future for all of DC’s
animals. Opportunities abound
for service to those animals most
vulnerable in our city; visit us
online at www.washhumane.org
and find what works for you,
or stop by one of our adoption
centers to say hello. The animals
will be waiting for you.

Happy Tails: ROCNELL’S RESCUE
By Megan Bates, Vet Tech Manager
Rocnell was surrendered to WHS in August 2012, with an injury to his left rear
leg. A wire tie-out chain had been wrapped around his leg, and his owner
could not afford medical care. After his intake examination, Rocnell was
immediately sent to a local animal hospital. There, the vet examined his
severe injury, reporting that he had a 104.7 fever (due to infection) and
several of his tendons, as well as a portion of his tibia, were showing.
They recommended we amputate at our National Capital Area Spay
and Neuter Center (SNC) soon.
He was sent for his neuter and amputation the next day. But, a
full schedule prohibited his amputation. Our Medical Director,
Dr. Megan McAndrew, replaced Rocnell’s bandage from the
day before and decided to wait a few days to see how it
would start healing with daily bandage changes. Aside from
the bandage that went from his hip all the way to his toes, we
saw a happy, full of life, crazy wiggle-butt puppy.
As with many puppies, Rocnell did not care for the restraint
involved in the bandage changes. Then we discovered his
secret - BELLY RUBS! Dr. McAndrew would rub Rocnell’s
belly and sweet talk him while I replaced his bandage. After
just one week, it was clear we had made the right decision to not
amputate his leg.
Rocnell soon found a loving foster home with a family that
brought him to WHS daily for his bandage changes.
Four months later, it was time to take off his bandages. Rocnell’s foster family had fallen in
love; they brought him in for a final check-up before adopting. You could see that happy,
wiggly boy smiling from ear to ear with his new name “Ascii” and his loving new family.
We were thrilled to congratulate him, give him one more belly rub, and wish him the
best of luck in his new life.
At the end of the year, Rocnell’s family made a generous donation in honor of the work
WHS did to save their “Medical Miracle.” You can help animals like Rocnell get a new
lease on life by making a donation to Sophie’s Fund for Emergency Medical Care.
Make your donation online at washhumane.org, or by calling 202-683-1826. 100% of
your gift will provide special medical attention for the animals in our care.
Young Philanthropists
WHS Board Member Saone Crocker’s grandchildren
raised $76 for the animals of WHS with their bake sale
at the Janney School winter fair. We are thankful for
Avey, Caleb, and Tala Anderson, who were completely
sold out of their homemade treats in mere minutes!

Preparing for Baby Season
By Robin Schindler, Wildlife Specialist
Spring has returned, and you may start noticing baby animals
everywhere. Make sure you aren’t mistakenly “kidnapping” a baby
who was being cared for by a nearby parent by following these steps:
If you have found a baby or picked one up, leave
them alone or put them back
Chances are their mother is nearby or has left them temporarily to
seek out food. Baby animals have a far better chance at survival with
mom than they do with a rehabilitator!
Monitor for mom:
• If a baby bird is fully feathered and not flying yet: Mom
should still be making regular stops to feed him and defend him
from predators. Leave the area and watch for mom from a
distance - at least an hour.
• If a baby bird or mammal fell from a nest: You can
make one! Put the baby in a small box with paper towels or
toilet paper and wedge it into a tree close to the original nest.
Monitor from a distance and watch for mom coming back to
feed (yep—she’ll feed them in the box!).
• Mom may leave a fawn for up to 18 hours at a time
before coming back to feed and move them. No matter
where you found the fawn, leave him as undisturbed as possible
for at least 48 hours, chances are mom will come back for him
and they will move on together.
Maybe he’s not a baby:
Juvenile opossums and cottontail rabbits become independent at a
very young age.
• Is the opossum’s body as long as your hand? Not a baby!
• Is the cottontail’s fur fluffy and his ears upright? Not a baby!
No mom in sight? Time to make a call:
If you haven’t seen mom and have given her time to reclaim her
baby, call the Washington Humane Society at 202-BE-HUMANE,
ext. 1. For all of your wildlife-related questions, email
[email protected].
What to Expect When You’re Expecting a Dog
By Marika Bell, Director of Behavior & Training
Dog adoption is a decision that will affect your family for the
next 10 to 15 years.
• What are my deal breakers?
Potty Train
• Is there a behavior that I feel really good about managing?
For puppies, expect at least two to four months of house
training. During this time, puppies must be supervised and kept
on a potty training schedule, so they don’t get into bad habits. If
the dog is an adult dog, be vigilant in the first two to four weeks.
• Are there any behaviors I can’t handle?
For example, fence jumping dogs may do well in apartment
homes. Some people don’t mind dogs who alert bark, and others
are great at redirecting unwanted chewing.
Ease the Transition
Make Rules
Especially for puppies, you will need to set up plans to prevent
unwanted behaviors like counter surfing, chewing, and jumping
up. For all dogs, set rules, and be consistent.
Prevent Cabin Fever
If you adopt an adolescent dog, they will have high
energy and will need at least one to two hours
of outdoor time with you every day. They are
social and need family time to learn walking
or playing fetch, house rules and how to fit
in. The entire family should share
pet responsibilities.
What Do You Expect?
When you are looking
for the perfect pet,
ask yourself:
Many dogs are traumatized by past experiences. They could
have been on the street for weeks, possibly starved or abused.
It usually takes a few weeks before a dog really settles into their
new home. You may begin to see problem behaviors that were
not apparent before. The “settling in” period can be a little rough
for some families, but that is no reason to lose hope or give up.
Help Us Help You
WHS wants to help you post-adoption. We can answer questions
about behavior and training, and recommend animal service
professionals, such as dog trainers, groomers, and walkers, who
offer discounts to new WHS adopters.

See Cats? Feed Cats? Build Cats Homes!
By Danielle Bays, Community Cat Programs Manager
Make kitty cottages with your scout troop, church group, or just as a fun family project to help DC’s
community cats stay warm. DC’s vibrant population of free-roaming cats are always looking for places
where they can be cozy at night. Cats are clever about adapting to their environment; however, there are
things that you can do to make their lives safer and more pleasant.
Kitty cottages, when placed on a deck, under a porch, or nestled in the garden, give cats a warm, dry, safe
place to sleep. Kitty cottages can be built in a variety of shapes and sizes and the price is right! With many
options for materials, they are not expensive to make.
How to Build a Kitty Cottage:
Materials:
• Straw (not hay)
• Catnip or cat treats
• Duct tape
• Large plastic storage container with a tight fitting lid
• Zip ties
• Insulation – a Styrofoam cooler (to fit inside the
storage container), sheets of Styrofoam, reflective
insulation, or other safe, sturdy padding
• Box cutter

One of the easiest cottage designs uses a Styrofoam cooler fitted
inside a large plastic storage container.
Fit the insulation inside your storage container. If it doesn’t fit
nicely, deconstruct it. Make sure to have a layer of insulation on
the bottom and the top, using duct tape to secure it.
Cut a door on the long side of the container and through the
insulation. Make sure the opening is high enough to clear the
insulation on the bottom and keep the straw from spilling out. For
children, this step is best done by an adult.
Duct tape the opening edges to secure the insulation to the
outside of the container and prevent rainwater from getting in
between the layers.
Furnish your kitty cottage with straw for extra insulation and
comfort. Blankets or towels can hold dampness and cold, so they
are not recommended.
Snap the lid on. Secure the lid further by poking holes in the top
and side of the container and looping a zip tie through.
Sprinkle catnip inside the cottage or make a trail of cat treats
leading up to the entrance to let your community cats know the
kitty cottage is for them.
WHS accepts donations of large (18 gallon+) plastic storage bins with lids, large
Styrofoam coolers, large sheets of Styrofoam, and other insulating materials.
Donations may be dropped at the National Capital Area Spay & Neuter Center,
or at our adoption centers.

Oscar Has Celebrity Style
“Oscar has such an expressive
personality. When he sees a
doggy friend of his, he has a
way of saying ‘DAD! Why am I
in here, and my buddies are out
there? Let’s get going pronto!’
An ideal afternoon for Oscar is
sitting in the window, watching
the downtown traffic go by, all
while keeping a tight time tab on
his outdoor schedule. He likes to
go out every four hours and will
make sure you know it.
I had one other dog in my life before Oscar named Smokey.
I can’t believe I was blessed twice to have what I believe is
truly this man’s best friend. From waiting by the door every
time I go out, to giving me loads of kisses each morning
when we get our day started, I couldn’t imagine this time in
my life without my precious furry friend. Thank you!”
When Olive Met Cora
Usually, Olive, Jordi
Hutchinson
and
Charles Allen’s dog,
goes to bed in the
other room without a
peep, but one evening
in July, Olive would not
go to sleep. Barking
and whimpering to
no avail, nine-monthspregnant Jordi and her
husband Charles were
miffed. They calmed
Olive down a little bit
by letting her curl up at the foot of their bed. Around 3:30 a.m., Olive
got up and left. An hour later, Jordi’s water broke.
“She figured out we were going into labor before we did,” said Jordi.
- Paul Wharton and Oscar
This February marked Olive’s four-year anniversary with her family.
Olive was an only child until the Hutchinson-Allen family welcomed
baby girl Cora Neal to the family.
Paul Wharton Style returns to the CW in April 2013 www.paulwhartonstyle.com.
“She’s been very sweet, giggly, and excited to have a dog for a big
sister,” said Jordi. “She reaches for her and is intrigued by Olive.”
When Jordi and Charles came to the adoption center to look for a
dog, it was important to find a dog that would be good with kids. They
knew Olive was “the one” when they saw her playfully lick a little girl’s
face at the adoption center.
“She’s an ambassador on how to be good with kids,” said Jordi. “She
desperately wants to get on the activity mat with Cora. At night if we
get up to feed Cora, Olive will check on us to make sure we’re okay. “

Make an Impact: Sponsor an Animal
By Carol King, Development Systems Specialist
Caring individuals can have a positive impact on the life of one of the community’s homeless animals by sponsoring a dog
or cat in one of our adoption centers as they await forever homes. For just $150 (the average cost of each animal’s stay
at WHS), you can have the satisfaction of knowing that your generosity is sponsoring items that make an animal’s time
with WHS as comfortable as possible. Your name will be prominently displayed on the animal’s enclosure for all visitors
to see, and you may visit and meet the beneficiary of your kindness. To sponsor a specific dog or a cat, select a pet
from our adoptables (www.washhumane.org/adopt). Make your $150 gift online at www.washhumane.org or mail your
donation to 7319 Georgia Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20012 c/o Development.
