- Free short-term places where parents and
other caregivers participate together with the
child.
Day-care centres’ opening hours
With the exception of open day care, most
municipal day-care centres are open from 07.30 to
16.30, five days a week.

Day-care centres are closed for holidays and
planning days (5 days a year). Many day-care
centres are also closed for a period in the middle
of summer.
Day care - what is it?
The start-up phase
Practical information
With close understanding and collaboration with
the children’s homes, the day-care centre shall
meet the children’s need for care and play, and
promote learning and forming as a basis for their
all-round development.
One of the parents should be present during the
first few days in the day-care centre to ensure the
child’s safe and smooth transition.
There is one joint admission for all day-care
centres. The application deadline for the main
admission is 1 March. Applications may also
be submitted for the supplementary admission
throughout the course of the year.
Why should children attend day
care?

- learn through play and other activities
- get to know different cultures in Norway
- learn the Norwegian language
- make friends with peers
The mother tongue
It is important to use the mother tongue at home
as this is the basis for developing skills in other
languages. Spend time talking about daily life,
and on songs, rhymes, fairy tales and books
together with your child to strengthen the mother
tongue.
Curriculum for day-care centres
According to the National Curriculum for Daycare Centres, the children shall familiarise
themselves with the following areas:
- communication, language and text
- the body, movement and health
- art, culture and creativity
- nature, the environment and technology
- ethics, religion and philosophy
- community and society
- numbers, space and shape
A typical day in the day-care centre
The children will eat breakfast, lunch and an
afternoon meal in the day-care centre. Some of the
meals (lunch packet) are prepared at home, while
some are served by the day-care centre, and may
include sandwiches, hot food, fruit and vegetables.
During the day there will be both indoor and
outdoor activities. To enjoy outdoor activities,
the children need suitable clothing for the season
so that they will not be too cold or too warm. In
the autumn and winter it is best to wear wool
next to the skin. Outer clothing should be wind-/
waterproof and breathable.
The youngest children have a nap in the day-care
centre, usually outside in their prams.
If you want to move your child to another daycare centre, the application deadline is 1 February.
If you need help to apply for a place in the daycare centre, you can contact a local day-care
centre or public health clinic, or another public
office in your district.
There is one fee for all municipal day-care
centres. Payment for food comes in addition.
Parents may apply for a discount on economic
grounds.
