Just as the final notes for the Shuttleworth
research
mentioned
in
last
month’s
newsletter were being sorted ready for filing,
an interesting email came through to the
Branch that presented the final solution as to
which branch of the family the Ngaere
Shuttleworth family belonged to.
See page 4 of this newsletter for the
information gathered up to that point.
The email was from a gentleman in Australia
who, using Google, had come across our
February 2010 branch newsletter with
Shuttleworth information mentioning Pte
R.C.E. Shuttleworth. The reason for his
research was that he has Pte Shuttleworth’s
WW1 medals and would like to pass them if
possible to a family member in NZ
Further research from our team and we
now hopefully have found a family
member.

more wide ranging site for Welsh seamen is at

From Rootsweb mailing listThe database indexes crew lists and Whalemen
Shipping Papers, written contracts with the crew, for
the period from 1810 through 1860.
http://www.newbedfordma.gov/Library/Whaling/Whaling.html
the database is in America, many people do not
realize that Massachusetts databases contain list of
whalers who visited New Zealand ...however it does
not always tell you if they settled here.
This database contains 100s of crewman who came
to the whaling grounds in the pacific, South Pacific
and North Pacific. It considers New Zealand a
whaling ground too but most whalers who came here
that are on this database and were discharged or
deserted here came to the Pacific whaling grounds.
Many jumped ship and deserted but were not
recorded as having deserted or discharged here but
you may be lucky.

This packrat has learned that what the next
generation will value most is not what we
owned, but the evidence of who we were
and the tales of how we loved. In the end,
The Hutt News this week (February 15-20th)
contains an article headed "One grave
undertaking at cemetery" It may be still on their web
site.http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/local/huttnews/
The article advises of the creation of an online
register to go on the Hutt Valley council website. The
Taita Cemetery, now nearly out of space, dates back
to 1892. The aim is to compile an accurate list,
however The problem is, the records are not always
accurate .It is estimated the details for the modern
parts of the cemetery are 85 per cent accurate but for
the older monumental section it is only about 25 per
cent.
To make matters worse, some of the old head stones
are now unreadable or have been damaged. While it
will be impossible to get the records 100 per cent
correct, the council wants to be as accurate as
possible. Four staff have been employed on a
temporary basis and are currently recording the
details on every headstone. The information can then
be checked against the written records held by
council.
When people go onto the website, they will get all
the information held on a person, as well as a map of
where the headstone is.
The register will also include data from the
Wainuiomata Remembrance Garden.

SHUTTLEWORTH RESEARCH PART 2
Genealogy research is often like doing a jigsaw,
trying to make the pieces fit.
The Shuttleworth Research
found 3 separate families that
came to Taranaki and as yet no
connection between them.
More information would have
come forth with the purchase of
the relevant certificates but as
this was not personal research
we were confined to resources available at our
Branch rooms and on the internet.
The Shuttleworths of New Plymouth are worth
mentioning as while doing our original research we
came across references to them in many resources.
First to arrive wereHenry and Eliza Shuttleworth with small daughters
Harriett, Ellen and Louisa arrived in New Plymouth
2nd Dec 1852 on board the “St Michael”.
Henry had married Eliza Newall 26 Aug 1845 St
Leonards Shorditch London.
Before coming to NZ they had been living in Market
Place. Saffron Walden Essex, England (1851 census)
Rreference to Henry have been found relating to sale
property in market Place Saffron Walden. Also Wises
Directory of Essex 1848 lists him as an Ironmonger.
A further daughter Florence Caroline was born
11 Dec 1856 in New .Plymouth
In New Zealand Henry is known to have had land in
Stratford as well as in New Plymouth
1878 H Shuttleworth bought land in Stratford.
( page 77 Stratford Dist. 125 Anniversary)
Marriages have been found for daughters
Harriet Eliza 1. 1867 Henry Boyle Hunter,
2.1875 George Dye Draper
Ellen Anne 1866 Francis Hugh Armstrong.
Florence Caroline. 1879 Dr.William Blunden
( later Lord Blunden)
1893 Elecroral roll
Living at Molesworth St. New Plymouth
Eliza - Widow
Louisa Spinster
Deaths
1893 Henry Shuttleworth
1904 Eliza Shuttleworth
1842. Lady Florence Blunden.
1946 Louisa Jane.
........................................
The second Shuttlewoth family found to have come to
New Plymouth was that of Jane Shuttleworth a widow
who came with her family, Alexander, Darius, Walter
and Juliana. They arrived in NZ on the ship “Bank of
England “ arriving at Auckland 28th Dec 1855. and coming
on to New Plymouth on the brig “Ocean”
Alexander Shuttleworth is written up in the Cyclopedia of
NZ and the article gives the information he was born is
Essex England
The 1851 census Shows Jane, a Widow keeping a lodging
house in Cambridge and birthplace for herself Juliana and
Alexander given as Hornchurch Essex. 1841 names her
husband as William and also names one family member
Lewis who did not come to NZ with the rest of the family
The newspaper death notice for Jane states formerly of
Albro hatch, Essex England.
In 1863 the three Shuttleworth brothers formed the firm
Shuttleworth Brothers, timber merchants, ironmongers and
general importers. All owned land in New Plymouth.
Darius was the only one to marry to Susan Collins in
1870.
1893 Electoral Roll.
Living New Plymouth
Walter – Timber merchant.
Living at Devon St New Plymouth.
Alexander -Timber merchant
Juliana - Spinster
Living at Te Henui New Plymouth
Darius – Timber merchant and Susan
Deaths
1883Jane
1896 Walter
1901Darius
1904 Susan
1915 Juliana
1923 Alexander
Papers past provided Obits for two of the brothers Walter
and Darius and other references were quickly found.
.........................................
Both of these families had connections to Essex but no
link could be found to either the photo or to Robert
Shuttleworth of Ngaere The many pieces of the Jigsaw
that did not appear in any way to fit together.
The resent break through in the research for Robert
Shuttleworth from Nagaere came from The Indexes to
marriages at Trinity Anglican Church Stratford, which
gave his parents as Robert Shuttleworth and Jane
Stimpson. Further research trace his family to Akaroa
Peninsula and their arrival in NZ in 1860 on the ship
“Robert Small” While the rest of his family remained in
the south Robert had made his way north to Taranaki.
