INFO RMATION
The vast majority of the dyestuffs used in the textile industry today, most notably in Asia are azo-based (contain a nitrogen double bond in their molecular structure).
They are generally prepared from diazonium salts and phenols or aromatic amino compounds — products which are arising from synthetic chemistry that are recognised as being toxic to humans,
especially children. They are listed as causing several professional diseases in many European countries.
According to the French Textile and Apparel Institute (IFTH), the main risk of absorption is through skin contact as aromatic amines are lipid soluble. A garment dyed with these substances can
contain small quantities of solid dyestuffs that can penetrate the skin, for example during perspiration. The nitrogen bonds break and the freed aromatic amines are assimilated by the body and
the decomposition of the amines by enzymes within the organism can cause cancer.
It is for this reason that European Directive 2002/61/EC prohibits the use of dyestuffs that can be released by the decomposition of azo compounds and certain aromatic amines. Some 22
amines are listed in the directive.
This has been formalised by the EEC regulation nº 880/92 of the Council of 23 march 1992, published in the EC Journal of 11 april of 1992. EC regulation nº 66/2010 of 25 November 2009 is
in force today. It came into effect after 20 February 2010.
Imported garments are not subject to all these regulations.
