que nous avons oublié ce qu’est l’art

Indépendant dans tous les sens du
terme, Saint Records prouve qu’on
n’est jamais aussi bien servi que par
soi-même. Surtout quand ça fait plaisir
aux autres.
In 2010, Solange came out with F*** The
Industry (Signed Sincerely), an insolent,
groovy rant against what goes on at the
record companies. In 2013, she started
her own label, Saint Records. “I wanted
to create a structure where artists could
grow and then go out on their own. I
can’t tell them what to do:
I am here to help them get noticed.” The
result has been a compilation of eleven
modern RnB songs, bringing together
the unforgettable Cassie, the South
African revelation Petite Noir, new artists
(Kelela, Jhené Aiko) and Solange herself.
“I discovered some of the artists on the
Internet, others were recommended to
me by friends. I am a real homing missile:
as soon as I hear a new sound, I take out
my ‘Shazam’.” One thing always holds
true: the voices are all superb and unique.
“With the advent of electro, I have had
the impression that we have forgotten
what the art of singing really is.” Indeed.
Saint Records is independent in every
sense of the word, proving that if you
want something done right, do it yourself.

Graphiste de 25 ans basé à Cape Town, Ben Johnson invoque les codes eighties du Memphis Design avec ses collages d’images, textes et illustrations aux
coloris pop et saturés qu’il applique sur des posters évènementiels. Sa créativité
détone également à travers des installations en boutiques et des collaborations
textiles sur t-shirts ou foulards.
A 25-year-old graphic artist based in Cape Town, Ben Johnson evokes the codes of
Memphis Design from the eighties with his collages made up of pictures, texts and
illustrations in saturated pop colours that he applies onto event posters. His creativity is
also expressed through in-shop installations and textile collaborations on T-shirts and
scarves.

Petite Noir
Né à Bruxelles, Yannick Ilunga grandit en Afrique du Sud, où il écoute
aussi bien de la New Wave que du hip-hop américain. Installé à Cape
Town, il sort en 2012 une série de titres electro fantômatiques. Mention
spéciale à Noirse, où sa voix de crooner, mariée à un xylophone et des
guitares coldwave, donne des frissons. Depuis, Petite Noir a écrit un
autre album, a tout jeté, recommencé à zéro, et crée des chevalières
gothiques chic avec son collectif, The Drone Society.
Born in Brussels, Yannick Ilunga grew up in South Africa, where he listens to
New Wave as well as American hip-hop. He lives in Cape Town and put out
a series of electro-ghost songs in 2012. A special mention goes to Noirse, in
which his crooner’s voice combines with a xylophone and coldwave guitars,
sending shivers down your spine. Since then, Petite Noir has written another
album, threw everything out, and then started all over again, and has created
chic gothic signet rings with his Drone Society collective.

d’écrin à cette unique galerie mobile créée par Zama Phakathi. La jeune
commissaire d’exposition parie depuis bientôt un an sur des artistes
émergents d’Afrique du Sud comme David Tshabalala ou Qhama
Dayile. Passionnée et engagée, Zama souhaite rendre l’art contemporain accessible à tous et défie de son « Stop » les esprits les plus
réticents.
A shipping container installed in an industrial neighbourhood of Johannesburg
hosts this unique mobile gallery created by Zama Phakathi. For nearly a year
now, this young exhibition organiser has been betting on upcoming South
African artists such as David Tshabalala and Qhama Dayile. Passionate and
committed, Zama seeks to make contemporary art accessible to all and
challenges the most reluctant minds with her “Stop”.

La mode sud-africaine regorge elle aussi de talents singuliers. Parmi
eux se démarque le vibrant Jamal Nxedlana et sa marque Missshape,
qu’il a fondée en 2012 à Johannesburg avec sa maman. Silhouette
structurée et mixe d’imprimés, les collections sont entièrement fabriquées en collaboration avec de artisans et usines locales. Hyperactif,
Jamal développe également des vidéos et performances artistiques.
South African fashion is also full of unique talents. The vibrant Jamal
Nxedlana stands out among them with his brand, Missshape, which he
founded in Johannesburg with his mother in 2012. With their structured
silhouettes and mixed patterns, his collections are fully produced in collaboration with local artisans and factories. Jamal is hyperactive, also developing

Découvert en 2010 avec sa reprise frénétique et hypnotique du Control de Joy Division, Spoek Mathambo
a vu ses deux albums salués par la critique internationale (le second est sorti chez SubPop, le label
de Nirvana). Il vient de réaliser le documentaire Future
Sound Of Mzansi, sur la nouvelle génération d’artistes
post-apartheid, et est à la tête de Fantasma, supergroupe réunissant les pointures de la scène locale, qui
vient de sortir un premier EP entre rap, rock psyché et
sons traditionnels.
Discovered in 2010 with his frenetic, hypnotic cover of Joy
Division’s Control, Spoek Mathambo has seen both his
albums receive rave reviews from international critics (the

just made a documentary, Future Sound Of Mzansi, on the
new generation of post-apartheid artists, and is the leader
of Fantasma, a supergroup bringing together the leading
