Cuatro Torres
Business Area (CTBA)
This complex, an ambitious project better
known as the Madrid Arena where
approximately 12,000 people work, is fully
operational since 2009. The adjoining areas
include spaces for public use: offices, an
auditorium and a congress hall, among others,
which are managed by Madrid City Council.
Given their significant height, the four
buildings in the complex have lead to the
maximising of safety measures against fire
and its consequences. They have flameprotected lifts, which can continue working
in the event of an accident, and their design
includes a many intermediate technical floors
that, in turn, are used to separate sections
between floors and to maintain emergency
services.
A unique project with an appearance that
has changed the profile of the northern area
of Madrid.

Torre Repsol
The prestigious British architect Norman Foster has been commissioned to create this city skyscraper, especially
designed to minimise environmental impact. The 250-metre tall building was initially planned to house the
central offices of Repsol YPF and was subsequently purchased by Caja Madrid.
The skyscraper has a total of 34 office floors and four double-height technical floors, as well as 5 underground
basements with 1,150 garage spaces.
The air conditioning system selected for the office floors was a variable flow all-air system. This system has
significant financial benefits such as the drop in energy consumption, free cooling during a large part of the
year, lower investment costs than other systems with a similar technical quality and lower running costs,
etc. Furthermore, it has many technical advantages such as its extensive zoning possibilities, increased comfort
by permanently adapting loads to actual needs, great centralised operating control of the installations and
high indoor air quality.
In the perimeter areas of the building, a mixed variable-constant flow system was chosen with Varyfan units
fitted with a heating coil. This type of unit ensures a constant air flow in the room, and guarantees a constant
number of movements in the area. The treated air supplied to these units is variable flow, thus leading to
energy saving advantages.
In the indoor areas of the building, air is distributed using TVZ series variable flow units that modulate their
air flow to adapt to the specific needs of each area.
Air is diffused in the office floors using VSD series linear diffusers built into the modular ceiling selected by
the architect. The diffusers, which operate with a variable flow of air, are fitted with a Varyset type plenum
that modifies their geometry to give an effective air output speed that is practically constant, despite varying
the supply flow.
The building includes an auditorium with a capacity to seat 300 people. This space is treated by displacement
supply, the air is distributed to each of the SDRF series terminals located below the seats through a plenum
underneath them.
Torre de Cristal
Torre de Cristal, owned by the insurance company Mutua Madrileña, is the work of the Argentine César Pelli,
the author of the Petronas Towers, and are 250 metres in height, distributed over 46 floors. It competes with
Torre Repsol in terms of height, as both are the tallest skyscrapers in Spain.
This irregular prism-shaped construction with a winter roof garden is to be used for office rental.
TROX contribution to this tower involved the full supply of air diffusion elements. The elements selected were
VDW-type auto-controlled swirl diffusers. These diffusers are fitted with a servo-motor that modifies the
supply flow in each area, and guarantees significant versatility in the air conditioning installation. The air
flow will be adapted to the actual requirements of each area of the building. Supply in perimeter areas
involves a constant flow through VSD50 series linear diffusers.
Furthermore, for building user safety, FKA-3.2 fire dampers have been installed with a fire resistance of RF180, whose function is to allow for easier building evacuation in the event of a fire. Therefore, they ensure
the compartment of sectors, avoiding the spread of smoke and fire around the different rooms of the building.

Torre Espacio
Torre Espacio is the fourth tallest skyscraper in Spain and one of the tallest in Europe, at a height of 223
metres and with 57 floors above ground level. A building designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, it is characterised
by its façade covered exclusively by glazing and square floors at the base that change as the height increases
to give a shape similar to that of an open eye.
The building houses the offices of companies such as Inmobiliaria Espacio S.L., OHL and Dragados.
A “chilled beam” air conditioning system was chosen for Torre Espacio, with outdoor ventilation air through
the floor. The supply of the FBA series floor diffusers and the installation of RN and EN series constant air
flow controllers ensure the required supply of ventilation air in each room.
The constant air flow controllers operate without the need of external energy, running mechanically and
automatically to ensure an air flow regardless of the pressure in the duct.
The FBA floor diffusers are of the swirl type, producing a fast mixture of supplied air with the air in the room
to avoid the unpleasant feeling of cold air on one’s feet.
To avoid the transmission of noise generated by the air conditioning fans to the area occupied, MSA series
duct attenuators have been installed to ensure the noise levels in the rooms never become bothersome.
Furthermore, to guarantee the safety of occupants from any fires, fire dampers have been fitted in all the
sectors into which the building is divided. The fire dampers installed belong to FKA-3.2 series, with a fire
resistance of 180 minutes.
Torre Sacyr
Torre Sacyr Vallehermoso is the only building in the complex designed by Spanish architects. Madrid-born Rubio
Carvajal and Álvarez Sala were commissioned to design a space for use as a five-star hotel with a panoramic
restaurant and office space. The tower is 235 metres tall and houses a total of 51 floors. The air conditioning
system selected for this tower, as it was in Torre Repsol, involves the variable flow all-air system.
The hotel rooms are air conditioned using Varyfan units, the air being supplied to the room in a constant flow
to ensure air movements is maintained. The air flow supplied to the Varyfan unit is variable and depends on
the thermal requirements of each room, either because of the direction in which it is facing or because its
occupancy. The air flow not treated from the air conditioning unit will be recirculated into the room through
the Varyfan unit air outlet.
