Welcome to Leitchfield
On behalf of the City of Leitchfield, it is my pleasure to extend
a warm welcome to you and your
family. Leitchfield is located in
Grayson County, Kentucky between
Nolin Lake and Rough River Lake.
Leitchfield became incorporated in
1866. This year, the city is celebrating Leitchfield’s 150th anniversary.
The Jack Thomas House, which is
the first brick home in the county,
contains fascinating historical information for interested historians to
learn more facts about Leitchfield’s
beginning and past. The home is
also placed on the National Register
of Historical Record and is a tourist attraction for the young and old
alike.
Leitchfield offers a thriving community with our many industrial
locations to provide different professions and trades to our residents
and neighboring communities.
Leitchfield is also proud to present the recently opened Leitchfield
Aquatic Center. The Aquatic Center
offers a 217,000 gallon pool complete with a lazy river, slide, lap pool
and tot pools. Leitchfield is also
home to the Freedom and Fiddlin’
Festivals that are held in conjunction each July. The Fiddlin’ Festival
is nationally sanctioned and brings
talent from all over the United
States to compete. Leitchfield offers
the small town feel with progressive
opportunities and is the perfect location to settle down with a family or
start a business. We love Leitchfield
and know you will, too.
William H. Thomason
Mayor, City of Leitchfield
The Leitchfield City Council meets in regular session on the first
and third Mondays of each month.
Leitchfield hosts numerous events throughout the year, including
the annual Hometown Christmas and Memorial Day parades.
The City of Leitchfield has its very own water park, Leitchfield
Aquatic Center.

Welcome
to Clarkson!
On behalf of the City of
Clarkson, the “Honey Bee
Capital of Kentucky,” I welcome you to our community.
Conveniently located along the
Western Kentucky Parkway
in Grayson County, Clarkson
is a growing community that
is home to dozens of successful, locally owned businesses
and hundreds of hard-working
people.
Each year in September,
our entire town buzzes with
excitement as tens of thousands of visitors and bee
enthusiasts descend on Clarkson for the annual Honeyfest.
Designated the “Official State
Honey Festival” by the Kentucky General Assembly in
2006, the Honeyfest celebrates
Clarkson’s ties to the bee
industry. The Kelley Beekeeping Company, one of the largest manufacturers of beekeeping supplies in the nation, has
called Clarkson home since
1954. In September 2015, the
company embarked on a $7.5
million expansion project as
part of their commitment to
our community.
Incorporated in 1908, Clark-
son has a population of around
1,000. We offer a variety of
city services, and our tax
rates are among the lowest
in central Kentucky. Clarkson boasts a nice city park,
outdoor basketball court and
new community center. We
also take pride in our children
and their education. Clarkson Elementary School was
recently recognized the first
Proficient elementary school
in the county and scored in the
89th percentile in state testing
and assessment.
We like to refer to ourselves
as the “Sweetest Little City
in Kentucky,” and we hope
you agree. With our smalltown atmosphere and friendly
residents, Clarkson is an ideal
place for anyone looking to
live, work, or visit. We welcome you to our community,
hope you enjoy your stay with
us, and will “bee” back soon!

The Caneyville City Commission meets in regular session on the second
Monday of each month.
Welcome
to Caneyville!
On behalf of the City of
Caneyville and City Commissioners, it is my pleasure to
welcome you to Caneyville.
Our City was founded in
1840 just below the forks
of Caney Creek, for whose
cane bottoms it was named.
We are next to the Western
Kentucky Parkway, as well
as only 14 miles from Rough
River State Park. Our City is
a small community with a big
heart.
Currently, we have just
completed a new ballfield
complex, including new playground equipment, as well
as a new walking trail for our
community. We are remodeling our old Caneyville High
School, home of the 1962 and
1968 District and Regional
Basketball Champs, both
teams representing our community in the semi-finals,
to serve as a community/
wellness center. Each April,
the alumni meet at the school
for a dinner and reunion,
filling our small community
with many happy memories.
Local area Church groups
present an Easter Drama,
working long hours together
for a wonderful presentation.
Caneyville is home to the
annual Caneyville Community Fair and Homecoming
in October. The community works together with the
Caneyville Community Club
each year to make this another special time for everyone.
Our local Bank of Caneyville
hosts the annual Christmas
tree lighting, where students
from our elementary school
choir sing, and Santa comes
by to talk to all the children.
We continue to see citizens in
our community step up and
take on roles to beautify and
grow our quaint little city.
We are proud that our city
offers a committed Volunteer
Fire Department, as well as a
full-time Police Officer. These
individuals are called on all hours for
many different reasons, and they are
always ready to serve our community.
We are also very proud of our K-5 Elementary School! Caneyville Elementary strives to prepare the children for a
bright future! Our City boasts of a rich
heritage. Many of our businesses have
been serving our City for many years.
We hope you will visit often and long,
and if you are looking for a place to
put down roots or start a business, you
have just found the perfect location.
We love Caneyville and feel you would,
too! We welcome you to come join us!

Grayson County is a
great place to live and
work, as well as a safe and
peaceful place to raise
a family. With beautiful
country vistas, two lakes
for plenty of family fun,
and loads of community
pride, Grayson County has
much to offer.
With all the benefits that
Grayson County has to
offer, value is another item
to check off the list for area
home buyers. According
to realtor.com, the average price per square foot
in Leitchfied is just $49,
while the state average sits
at $91.
Sperling’s Best Places, a
company which researches
and rates cities and counties across the country
then provides that infor-
mation for perspective
newcomers, shows that
the average home price
in Grayson County is
$92,700. The state average
is listed at $125,100.
Grayson County features
many unique communities
in which to find your new
home. While Leitchfield,
the county seat, is the largest city, many people make
their homes in the cities of
Clarkson and Caneyville
as well. Even smaller communities such as Big Clifty,
Ready, Anneta, Wax, Falls
of Rough, Peonia, Shrewsbury and Millwood all
have unique benefits and
friendly faces as well.
Once the perfect community and the perfect
home have been chosen,
the next step is finding

the perfect loan. When
deciding on what home
loan is best for you, the
length of time you plan to
own a property may have
a strong influence on the
type of loan you choose.
For example, if you plan
to stay in a home for 10
years of longer, a traditional fixed-rate mortgage may
be your best bet. But if you
plan on owning a home
for a very short period (5
years of fewer), then the
low introductory rate of an
adjustable-rate mortgage
may make the most financial sense.
In general, ARMs have
the lowest introductory
interest rates, followed
by hybrid loans, and then
traditional fixed-rate
mortgages.

Economic Development
18 GRAYSON COUNTY GUIDE
May 25, 2016
In Grayson County, the
building and growing of business truly is a community
effort.
Guided by the Leitchfield/
Grayson County Industrial
Development Corporation
(LGCIDC), Grayson County
promotes business and economic growth through a collaborative effort that encompasses all.
With partners such as the
Cities of Leitchfield, Clarkson, and Caneyville, Grayson
County, Twin Lakes Regional
Medical Center, Grayson
County Schools and the Grayson County Technology Center, the LGCIDC, and the local
Elizabethtown Community
and Technical College campus,
“Everyone has a seat at the
table,” said LGCIDC Executive Director Dudley Cooper.
“I don’t think you could have
a more collaborative spirit,”
Cooper said.
The local IDC is involved
with every industry located in
Grayson County and serves
to bring in new industries,
help them start up locally, and
promote and encourage expansions.
Some such local expansions
include Plastikon, which,
through an expansion that is
well underway, looks to add
100,000-square-feet to its
Leitchfield location, resulting
in the creation of 65 to 100

new, local jobs in mid-2016;
North Grayson Holdings, LLC
dba Site-Safe’s successful move
to Leitchfield to house all of its
operations under one roof; and
MTD’s addition of a plastics
line that entailed remodeling
nearly half of its building.
In addition, the City of
Clarkson’s most well-known
industry, Kelley Beekeeping,
has commenced construction
on a new facility that looks to
open in September of this year.
Grayson County’s success
with industrial and economic
growth is, in large part, also
thanks to its location.
“The proximity to being on
I-65 in less than 30 minutes
is one of our greatest assets,”
said Cooper, adding that local
real estate is also a fraction of
the cost of other areas located
so close to I-65.
Additionally, within less
than a two-hour drive of
Leitchfield, one can find
“excellent” arts and culture, fly
out or in from the Louisville
International Airport, and earn
a college degree in anything,
Cooper said.
Grayson County is also fortunate to be nestled between
“the twin lakes” (Rough River
Lake and Nolin Lake); have
a school system from which
94 percent of its students
graduate; and a local hospital
that serves the entire region,
according to Cooper.
Grayson County receives
its utilities from Warren Rural
Electric Cooperative Corporation—who also collaborate
with the LGCIDC—and Kentucky Utilities. The county is
also served by P & L Railroad.
Between the City, County,
and Industrial Foundation,
Grayson County has a multitude of building sites and
future development opportunities.
“Come grow with us,” Cooper said.

GRAYSON COUNTY GUIDE
High Progress elementary
school, ranked in the 89th
percentile of all elementaries
statewide and like the district, also just one point from
Distinguished.
All elementary schools
made significant progress
in achievement and growth.
The middle school bested
the state average by nearly
a point, the high school by
more than three points.
In recent years, record
numbers of students have
earned a 30 or better on the
ACT college admissions test.
Industry certifications are
also on the rise.
Numerous AP and dual
credit courses give students
a head start on college, academically and financially.
Grayson County Schools has
been named to the College
Board’s District AP Honor
Roll for its efforts in this
regard. The high school has
also been selected as a U.S.
News & World Report Best
High School, Bronze, for the
past two years.
Student achievement is not
reflected solely in the classroom. Life lessons are just
as often learned on athletic
fields, and through the leadership and teamwork opportunities that extracurricular
participation provides.
The district’s Board
members are committed to
providing opportunities that
will engage students of all

the Harlan Scholars Law
School placement, and the
GEMS award for the School
of Medicine.
Academic Teams at all
levels consistently meet with
district, regional, state and
even national success. 2016
also saw a record number
of middle school students
in the Gifted and Talented
program receive both state
and national recognition for
early ACT college admission
scores.
Technical programs and
organizations consistently
make strong showings at
competitive events through
DECA, HOSA, and SkillsUSA. Junior-level HOSA
and DECA programs at
the middle school give students an early start to these
career paths and feed into
the already successful high
school organizations. Other
award-winning programs
such as Y-Club, FFA, and
journalism also provide
career experience in real
world situations.
The district’s arts programs are a source of pride,
and have grown significantly
over the past five years.
Band, orchestra, and chorus
are all reaching new heights,
consistently earning individual, district and state
honors. The combined music
programs now boast more
than 700 members. Visual
art is another strong area
as students are consistently
juried into the prestigious
Scholastic program and
many others.
Partnerships with community civic groups also open
new worlds to students as
they bring arts into schools
through dance, drama, even
opera to expand students’
knowledge of culture and the
world around them.
Student athletes and
teams excel at the district,
regional and state levels.
They are consistently named
to All-Tournament and AllAcademic teams, and recent
years have seen a number
of limited or first-time titles
come home with the Cougars. Newer sports, such as
volleyball and archery, have
met with unparalleled enthusiasm.
Students learn early to
use their abilities to serve
their community. Leadership
skills are also developed and
stretched through participation in staff-led clubs and
organizations. Each year,
Grayson County students
give thousands of hours to
a variety of wide-ranging
projects and programs that
benefit the community, civic
groups, school, and peers. In
addition to personal satisfaction and growth, many are
recognized with Leaders in
Service Awards.
Teachers and staff also
excel, frequently earning
acceptance into prestigious
programs, statewide awards,
even national level honors.
They have been recognized
as outstanding Advisors,
Administrators, individually and as teaching teams.
They receive scholarships
to conferences and symposiums to broaden their own
knowledge and bring it back
to their students. They are
also active in a variety of
after school and community
programs, many volunteering both their expertise and
their time.

believe that all students excel
in different areas; that they
each deserve the opportunity
to be successful, whatever
their path. Grayson County’s
students don’t get a second
chance for these opportunities, and the Board, teachers, and staff are more than
willing to go above and
beyond to provide them with
options.
Students’ learning, growing and performing at levels
they may never have imagined was in them leads to
personal, school and community pride. And as they experience the hard work and
persistence that leads to the
joy of accomplishment, the
back-pats, awards and honors
they receive now should put
them on the road to continued success in the future.
Superintendent Doug
Robinson notes that like
any business, education’s
end product of college and
career ready graduates must
have the marketable skills
that its customers—the
workplace and community—
demand. It’s a goal that can
be attained by “defining and
building on our successes,
being even more connected
with our kids, and steering them toward their own
successes from elementary
through graduation and into
adult life.”
Grayson County Schools
are invested in preparing

24 GRAYSON COUNTY GUIDE
May 25, 2016
St. Paul Catholic School
began a little over 100 years
ago. In that time, the school

changes, from enrollment,
teaching staff, modifications to the physical building itself, and many more.
To grow is to change, and
that is precisely what this

enrollment of 47 students,
preschool through grade 8,

updating of curriculum
taught, increased requirements for teachers, and renovations on the building, the
three main principles remain
the same: St. Paul Catholic School is one in which
Faith, Values, and Education
is weaved throughout every
part of its school day.
It is located in a rural part
of Grayson County, at 1812
St. Paul Rd., Leitchfield,

with Joan Butterworth as
Head Teacher. There are five
other teachers at the school,
and because of the growth
the school has experienced
in the last two years it was
announced that they will
be adding a new principal,
Kim Smith, in the coming
school year. The school has
received grants in the last
two years that have allowed
them to update technology
within each classroom, and
add more extracurricular
programs.
St. Paul Catholic School
now has many other programs offered, to include

TLRMC: Big city healthcare in a
hometown atmosphere
The employees at Twin
Lakes Regional Medical Center strive to be recognized by
the people they serve as the
provider of choice for their
healthcare needs and as a
leading force for progressive
change within the community.
The Grayson County hospital has 75 private, inpatient
rooms and a variety of quality
outpatient services. With over
55 medical providers, 20 specialties and 400 employees,
TLRMC gives the region a
significantly larger healthcare
facility than most similar
sized communities. Featuring
the most modern diagnostic
equipment, an advanced
wound healing center, a pain
management center, a multitude of surgical specialties
and a nationally recognized
OB staff, the hospital takes
pride in combining hometown
care with modern technology.
The hospital features the
following departments and
services:
•Cardiac Rehabilitation
•Cardio/Pulmonary
Testing
•Critical Care Medicine
•Diagnostic Imaging
•4-D Ultrasound
•128 Slice Computerized Tomography (CT)
•Bone Densitometry
•CT Angiography
•Echocardiograms
•GI Studies (upper and lower)

working with TLRMC, operates facilities in Big Clifty,

provide quality healthcare services in locations convenient
to everyone living in Grayson
County.
““We have great equipment
and a wonderful facility, but
it’s our highly trained employees and medical staff that
allows us to provide extraordinary patient care,” said
Wayne Meriwether, MHA,
Chief Executive Officer, Twin
Lakes Regional Medical Center.
For the four years in a row,
Twin Lakes Regional Medical
Center was named one of the
best healthcare organizations
to work in the United States.
Becker’s Hospital Review, a
national healthcare journal
based in Chicago, has published the 2016 edition of its
“150 Great Places to Work in
Healthcare.” TLRMC is the
only hospital in Kentucky to
receive the honor.
Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center
“When you have a staff
that treats their patients and
co-workers in a caring and
respectful manner, it just
stands to reason that TLRMC
is going to be a place that people will want to work. I want
to thank all of our employees
for making TLRMC so much
more than just another place
to work, but truly a ‘Great
Place to Work’,” said Meriwether.
The organizations featured
on the list were selected by
the Becker’s Hospital Review
editorial team based on
workforce awards received,
benefits offerings, wellness
initiatives, efforts to improve
professional development,
diversity and inclusion, worklife balance and a sense of
community and unity among
employees. Becker’s Hospital
Review is a monthly publication offering up-to-date
business and legal news and
analysis relating to hospitals
and health systems.
The Patient Protection
and Affordable Care Act of
2010 requires nonprofit,
tax-exempt hospitals such as
Twin Lakes Regional Medical
Center to assess the healthcare needs of their communities every three years and
to adopt an implementation
strategy to address the needs
identified. Each hospital must
make its Community Health
Needs Assessment (CHNA)
and Implementation Strategy
available to the public. This
report serves as a stepping
stone to future studies of
community health concerns,
the enhancement of health
services offered to the community and the spark to create community partnerships
that address the health needs
of the community.
To put the CHNA report
into action, TLRMC created
the Population Health Committee. This group of people

improving access; enhancing
skills; and changing consequences.
In a show of new technology aimed at helping enhance
the patient experience,
TLRMC has introduced an
intuitive registration solution
called Queue (pronounced
“Q”) that offers real‐time
registration monitoring and
works to reduce patient wait‐
times.
Placed in registration areas
in the main lobby and outpatient surgery at TLRMC,
Queue multi‐touch displays
provide a modern registration
experience by securely and
efficiently collecting patient
information. After signing
in using Queue, patients can
monitor their wait‐time via
digital displays in waiting
areas. Using Queue, TLRMC
will manage the registration
process efficiently in one
central location. The Queue
system is integrated to other
data bases within TLRMC so
the registration clerk already
has the patient’s information
ready by the time they sit in
the private registration room.
“The addition of Queue to
our registration process is a
natural next step in our ongoing effort to create the best
patient experience possible,”

Focus Points set in the 2012
and 2015 CHNA reports. The

superintendent, registered
dieticians, a pharmacist, a

Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center recognizes that we
do not have adequate resources to solve all problems identified. However, we do have
the obligation and ability to
be the change leader where
possible. We view this plan
as providing guidance around
how we, along with other
area organizations, groups
and agencies, can collaborate
to improve the health and
medical care available to the
people of our community.
In order to addressing the
prioritized needs, TLRMC
will engage key internal and
community partners. Customized strategies have been
developed and will be continued. The strategies include,
but are not limited to,
modifying polices, public and
private; providing support,

said Kelly Milliner-Hudspeth,
Registration Coordinator at
TLRMC.
TLRMC and its employees
have a major impact on the
economy of Grayson County.
According to the latest figures
available from the Kentucky
Hospital Association, in 2013,
Twin Lakes Regional Medical
Center spent over $22 million on employee wages and
salaries and purchases of supplies and services. These dollars have a “ripple effect” as
they move through the larger
economy, supporting other
businesses and jobs in the
community as well as generating tax revenue used to fund
state programs.
The hospital also has a
major impact on services
provided by the governments
serving Grayson County residents. The KHA concluded
that TLRMC is responsible
for over $2.1 million in state
and local tax revenue through
the taxes they pay directly
and tax revenue generated
from their employees.
The Kentucky Auditor
released a report in 2015
on the financial strength of
rural hospitals. The report
concludes that fully one-third
of Kentucky’s rural hospitals
were rated as being in poor
financial health and could be
in danger of having to make
difficult decisions such as cutting employees, eliminating
services or possibly even having to close the hospital.
Residents of Grayson and
surrounding counties received
good news in the report, however. Twin Lakes Regional
Medical Center is ranked as
having the sixth best financial
position of the 44 rural Kentucky hospitals listed. When
you take out the two smaller,
Critical Access hospitals
ranked higher, the news is
even better. TLRMC is rated
fourth among all comparable
rural acute care hospitals in
the commonwealth.
According to the report, the
importance of rural hospitals
such as TLRMC cannot be
overstated. They provide
healthcare to 45 percent of
Kentuckians and serve a
disproportionate share of lowincome and elderly citizens.
In many rural communities
in particular, hospitals are
the first or second largest
employer and typically pay
higher-than-average wages
than other employers. Ken-

Grayson County 4H
What is 4-H? 4-H is a youth
organization committed to
building outstanding leaders
with marketable skills to succeed in today’s global society.
4-H empowers youth to reach
their full potential, working
and learning in partnership
with caring adults. Head,
Heart, Hands, and Health are
the four H’s in 4-H which represent the four values members work on through fun and
engaging programs.
4-H benefits youth in a variety of ways regardless of back-
ground, socio-economic status, race or gender. Positive
youth development studies
have affirmed that compared
to other youth, young people
involved in 4-H are about:
Four times more likely to
contribute to their communities.
Two times more likely to be
civically active.
Two times more likely
to make healthier lifestyle
choices.
Two times more likely to go
to college.
Fair, Horse Show, and Shooting Sports competitions, but
youth can start as early as 5
years old in the Cloverbud

Grayson County Community Sports
For parents looking for an
organized sports program
in which to enroll their children, Grayson County has a
number of programs available
which should be of interest.
Since Clarkson opened its
community park, the number
of programs available has
increased dramatically, with
youth soccer and baseball
taking center stage.
Grayson County Youth Soccer (GCYC) offers spring and
fall leagues for boys and girls
from four and under on up to
14 and under. The emphasis
in this league is for kids to
have fun while learning the
game of soccer.
At the earliest ages, children are learning to kick and
chase the ball and to realize
the idea is to get the ball into
the net. Parents are welcome
on the field to assist in the
process.
The under-six players play
3-on-3 games with kick-offs
at the start and at half-time
of each game. Players learn
not to use their hands and
have throw-ins. Penalties are
rarely called, but play can be
stopped to address incorrect
actions.
Under-eight teams play
5-on-5 games with goalies
being used and corner kicks
being introduced. Basic penalties are called and players
learn about the box. Team
play is emphasized, but not
really expected.
Under-10 teams play 7-on7 games with offsides calls
being introduced. Players
should be familiar with all
aspects of the game when
they age out of this group.
The under-14 group plays
11-on-11 and all rules and
concepts, including all penalties, should be learned and
will be enforced.
GCYC offers a website
where registration forms and
other information is available. Go to www.graysonco-
soccer.com to view their site.
Baseball and softball
programs for boys and girls
ages 4-12 are also available
in Clarkson. Park director
Kevin Johnston administers
these programs and he can
be reached at 270-5281563
(cell), or 270-287-9375
(home). You can also contact
Clarkson City Hall at 270242-6997 for information.
Tee-Ball teams are formed
for youngsters age 4-7. A
boys 7-8-year-old league
and a girl’s 9-under softball
league plays a schedule of
games during which the
pitching is done by machine.
Boys teams for ages 9-10
and 11-12 play games with
live pitching. All the teams
are affiliated with the nationwide Cal Ripken League.
Sign-ups for all the leagues
begin near the end of February or the beginning of
March, with play beginning
near the end of April or the
beginning of May.
Following the regular
schedule, the leagues hold
tournaments and select AllStar teams which then go on
to compete at the district and
state levels.
Johnston is also in charge
of the county-wide Junior
Pro Basketball League, which
forms leagues for boys and
girls in three age groups,
7-9, 10-11, and 12-13-years.
The teams play their games
at three different elementary
schools, Lawler, Caneyville
and Clarkson.
Sign-ups for Junior Pro
Basketball begin in September with the first games
being played near the beginning of November and continuing into January. Contact
Johnston for more info about
this program.
The City of Caneyville
recently opened its new
community park with two
new ball fields. Contact
Caneyville City Hall at 270-
879-9701 for info about the
summer programs available.
The City of Leitchfield
offers slow-pitch softball
at its complex in James D.
Beville Park. Leagues beginning at 9 & under on up to
16 & under are formed in
the spring and play a slate of
games in affiliation with the
American Softball Association (ASA).
Tournaments are held
after the regular season and
All-Star teams are formed in
each division with the opportunity to advance to the
national level.
Jose Soto is the commissioner of baseball for the
city of Leitchfield and can be
reached at 270-259-6127. The
city currently offers youth
baseball at its field behind
Wilkey Elementary School
during the summer months,
but a new complex is under
development that will expand
the programs. Contact Soto
or Leitchfield City Hall at
270-259-4034 for more info.
Tennis programs are
offered each summer and fall
for all ages. Long-time high
school tennis coach, Sherry
Vincent, administers the programs.
Four Cougar Tennis Camps
are held each summer for
beginners and experienced
players alike. The camps
stress fundamentals for the
younger players and work
on increasing the skills of
the older players. There is a
fee involved for these camps
and each camper receives a
T-Shirt and can win weekly
awards.
Vincent also organizes a
Community Adult League
which plays matches on Tuesday evenings in the fall. Contact Vincent at 270-870-3245
for info concerning these
programs.
The county also offers
Junior Pro Football, a league
playing tackle football for
players ages 7 through 11.
teams are formed at each elementary school in the county
and play their games on
weekends beginning in September. Contact the schools
for info about these teams.
The Twin Lakes
Grayson County residents and
visitors have long taken advantage of the County’s two lakes.
Rough River lake, located in
the norther portion of Grayson
County and Nolin lake to the
south offer family-friendly sporting and recreation opportunities
year round.
Rough River Lake
A dam was built on Rough River
to help control flooding in the
Ohio River Valley. The dam is
135 feet high, 1,500 feet long,
and 819 feet wide at the base.
Rough River Lake covers 5,000
acres, with a shoreline of 221
miles. Fishing in Rough River
Lake includes bass, bluegill,
catfish, crappie, rough fish, and
walleye.
Rough River Dam State Resort
Park has a lodge with rooms,
cottages, marina, and campgrounds with electricity and
water hook-ups.
Call 800-325-1713 for more
information.
Nolin River Lake
The 5,795-acre Nolin River Lake
provides recreational opportunities for boating, fishing,
swimming, camping, picnicking,
hunting, and relaxing. With
miles of scenic shoreline and
cool, clear water, Nolin is the
perfect summer getaway. The
lake has an abundance of bass,
catfish, crappie, and walleye for
great fishing.

musical comedies.
The 2016 season will

“Bluegrass Music” night with
various musicians performing
that wonderful home grown
Kentucky music. Then August
13th will be “Gospel Music”
night with three different
groups performing.
Each summer on the last
Saturday in July and September it’s our “Theatre Festival”
beginning at noon with a large
buffet lunch followed by three
different productions. For
those who may not like to get
out at night, the festivals provide several of the plays in one
afternoon. During the regular
season, Friday and Saturday
nights, the “Backyard Cookout” and concession stand

30th season and voted to be
one the top three best community theatres in Kentucky
by readers of Kentucky Living magazine, which has the
largest circulation in the state,
and a member of the National
Outdoor Drama Association, the Pine Knob Outdoor

the county. This true story was
the founding play written by
Honus Shain and performed

46 GRAYSON COUNTY GUIDE
May 25, 2016
Visitors to a Historical Society meeting were treated to walking or
trolley tours which visited approximately 50 historical sites in downtown
Leitchfield.
Community members gathered at the Jack Thomas House for a special
Historical Society meeting, a tour of important historical sights
throughout downtown Leitchfield, and watermelon social.
Historical Society Christmas Carolers
Greetings from the Grayson
County Historical Society!
2016 marks a special milestone for our Society as we
celebrate our 40th anniversary. We welcome you to our
community and hope you will
stop by and visit with us!
The Grayson County Historical Society strives to preserve the history of our county and make those findings
open for public use through a
museum and research library.
We own and maintain the oldest brick building in the county, the Jack Thomas House,
at 122 East Main Street in
Leitchfield, Kentucky. The
home, constructed around
1815, is named for its builder
and initial occupant Jack
Thomas, Grayson County’s
first circuit and county court
clerk.
Our upstairs museum,
which is open for tours for a
fee, features an annex with
rotating exhibits several times
each year. Our downstairs
research library is open to the
public at no charge. We also
have a meeting room which is
used by the Historical Society,
as well as the local Woman’s
Club and DAR Chapter. This
room, as well as an adjoining dining room, can also be
rented for other functions. We
have three general meetings a
year, which are typically held
in March, June, and October,
and well as several open houses and other events scheduled
throughout the year. Programs
for our general meetings
typically consist of a guest
speaker and refreshments
at the Jack Thomas House,
although we sometimes travel
to other historic sites in the
county for a change of venue.
The Historical Society Board
meets monthly.
The Grayson County Historical Society owns three other
buildings besides the Jack
Thomas House - the Buchanan
Log Cabin on the grounds of
the Jack Thomas House, the
Walnut Grove School near
Caneyville, and the Edwards
School west of Short Creek.
We are also responsible for
the upkeep of the Thomas
Cemetery in Leitchfield.
Please remember, we are
always looking for donations
pertaining to Grayson County
and its families and communities. If you have an item that
you would not like to leave
your family, we are always
glad to take an item on loan.
Please call us at 270-230-8989
or email graysoncokyhistsoc@
windstream.net for more
information.
As a non-profit organization, we rely on your donations and membership dues to
keep the Jack Thomas House
open to the public. The cost
of membership to the Grayson
County Historical Society is
$15 per year or a one-time
cost of $200 for a lifetime
membership. Benefits include
a subscription to our newsletter The Graysonite. Please
make checks payable to the

Society, P.O. Box 84, Leitchfield, KY 42755.

How has agriculture
changed over years:
The landscape of agriculture in Grayson County has
changed throughout the
years due in large part to the
changing tobacco economy.
After the tobacco buyout of
2001, many farmers diversified their operations to a forage and livestock enterprise.
There has also been a large
push in recent years in commercial horticulture due to
the local food movement.
Agriculture and the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service:
The UK Cooperative Extension service is the most
comprehensive outreach
and engagement program at
the University of Kentucky.
Through our partnership
with The UK College
of Agriculture, Food &
Environment, it allows for
research and educational
efforts developed at UK to
be brought to a grassroots
level to be demonstrated and
implemented. Everything
in Extension is done with
the farmer’s best interest
in mind. The Cooperative
Extension Service in Grayson County provides great
services for farmers such
as: soil sampling, plant disease diagnostics, weed and
insect ID, on-farm education
and research, and access to
extension specialists in all
agriculture fields. Cooperative extension does its best
to extend knowledge and
change lives of Grayson
County.
