.....Lady Jane Grey was saved from a
house in Wellfleet along with her four
babies. After two baths and individual
cuddling with soft dry towels, the kittens were much happier. We always
worry about flea bite anemia and are
very careful when handling cats with
flea evidence to avoid crosscontamination. The babies grew, (we
weigh them daily), but it became obvious that Jane really was not capable of
raising four nursing kids. At the same
time we had taken in an experienced
mother, Otis, who had five of her own
and it was decided to give Otis one of
Jane's babies. She immediately accepted the foster child and Nikki dove
right in with Otis's own. Jane was much
relieved and her children grew faster.
Otis was so wonderful that when two
kittens arrived suddenly from Truro, we
gave her those and she happily nursed
eight.
This is the kind of thing that makes
the long hours at CASAS so joyful.
Jane and Otis are both spayed and now
available for adoption; the boys from
each litter have been neutered and most
of the girls are reserved and will go to
their forever homes as soon as they are
spayed.

Rose
Weaning ones’ self from nursing is a
big exciting step. For little Rose it was
a first step into a fight to keep herself
alive. Rose, one of Lady Jane Grey’s
kittens, had been fine until she started
to eat solid food at about 6 weeks old.
She gasped, choked, regurgitated and
tried to eat again. Antibiotics were tried
to no avail, blood work showed nothing, and x-rays did not give a definitive
diagnosis. She was, however, gaining
weight because she was still nursing
some. It was decided to take Rose to
Tufts Veterinary Hospital in Grafton for
a complete evaluation. She remained at
Tufts for eight nights, underwent endoscopy and balloon dilation, and was fed
through a nasal tube. After having had
her esophagus stretched, Rose returned
home with her nasal tube in place, an
Elizabethan collar and with a trial of
oral super-vitamin semi-solid food.
We are happy to report that after a
stay in foster care at Dave and Anita
Butler’s Rose has been adopted by
Laura Lubetsky and Carl Sussman.
PAW 2009
.....Following is a brief photo/diary of
events at PAW 2009: The opening night
dinner at the Surfside Inn (catered by
Paul Fanizzi) was wonderful as usual
with plenty of good food and prizes.
Thank you Paul for again coming
through for us and Elaine and Dave
Quigley at the Surfside. Saturday’s Canine Games attracted a talented group
of dogs and humans. The judges Donna Cooper, Mike McDonnell,
Tina Brown and Zoe Lewis - chose the
winners carefully. Results follow. Pet
Tea Dance at the Boatslip was a blast
and is fast becoming a prime attraction.
Sunday arrived in a downpour and The
Pet Parade,unfortunately, was a wash
out. However, about 20 dogs turned out
to be blessed but only one, Tipper, actually paraded along with nine banner
carriers. The Grab Brothers played for
a small soggy crowd at The Pied where
Pat Jackson was awarded a prize for
being the top pledge gatherer. Team
Crackerdog was runner-up.
