Purcell: Dido & Aeneas
Emily Van Evera, sopr ano / Ben Parry, bar itone / Andrew Parrott
Taverner Choir & Players
AVIE continues to mine the rich catalog of recordings made by Andrew Parrott and his
Taverner Choir & Players with a sumptuous reissue of Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas.
The performance is as fresh as when the recording was made in 1994, with baritone Ben Parry
AV2309
as the Trojan hero Aeneas, and soprano Emily Van Evera as the abandoned Queen of Carthage,
delivering an interpretation of Dido’s Lament that is as dignified as it is sublime.
“places the accent on giving meaning and colour to every word of the text … Parrott directs the
excellent Taverner Players in a performance that charms as well as moves in abundance.” –
BBC Music Magazine, * * * * * / * * * * *
Gesualdo: Tenebrae Responses for Good Friday
“Expressive vibrato is used judiciously in these performances, and with an organic sense of phrasing, sensitive
dynamics and pretty good clarity of delivery when it
comes to text, this is a fine recording with which I can live
quite happily. Gesualdo’s remarkably anguished harmonies are served very well indeed. MusicWeb
AV2305
“the Avie set favours near-vibrato-less singers of
ambiguous fach - proper voices indeed” Gramophone
“Daniels is magnificent in the title role - technically
brilliant...impassioned...and lyrically supple...BBC
“This new version of Monteverdi's Orfeo is thoroughly
researched and reimagined...a gentle, lyrical vision of
a miraculous opera.” The Observer AV2278
Schubert: Str ing Quintet in C, D. 956 / String Quintet, “Quartettsatz”
AV2307
Cypress String Quartet with Gary Hoffman, cello
The Cypress String Quartet is a “wonderful ensemble” (Gramophone) whose “extremely fine playing”
(The Classical Reviewer) has lent itself to music of Dvořák and contemporary Americans on their recordings
for AVIE. They now turn to core 19th-century fare, some of the greatest chamber music ever written: Schubert’s single-movement “Quartettsatz”, and the composer’s final chamber work, the enduring String Quintet,
joined by eminent Canadian cellist Gary Hoffman. The Cypresses’ elegant and clear signature sound lends
itself perfectly to these two masterworks.
“artistry of uncommon insight and cohesion” – Gramophone
“beautifully proportioned and powerful.” The Washington Post
Dvořák: The Amer ican Album-Griffes, Puts, Barber
“The Cypress Quartet play with taut rhythms and great
tonal refinement, both as individuals and in a beautifully
rounded ensemble sound. A reflective approach to the more
lyrical moments of the Dvořák...gives the pleasing impression
that you're in the room with them while they're playing for
their own enjoyment.”
AV2304
Dvořák: Cypr esses for str ing quar tet, B152
String Quartet No. 13 in G major, Op. 106 (B192)
“the eponymous Cypress Quartet play these
arrangements with exquisite shading and a fine
sense of nuance…” BBC Magazine
AV2275
Paganini: Capr ices (arr. Piccinini) - Marina Piccinini, flute
AV2284
Flautist Marina Piccinini relishes tradition with a twist. Having recorded J. S. Bach’s Flute Sona2CDs for
tas with the Brasil Guitar Duo – the first ever recording using this combination of instruments
the price
(AV 2196) – she astounds again with Piccinini matches Paganini’s vision and independence of
of 1-1/2
spirit, explaining, “I was drawn to transcribe and record all the Caprices as a challenge and stimulus for my own development, a path towards pushing the envelope outside my personal comfort
zone. What I discovered and fell in love with was a musical voice that demanded a far greater emotional expression through technical perfection of phrasing, flexibility of embouchure, depth of sound, breath control,
digital dexterity and precise articulation.”
“Piccinini’s intelligent musicality and command manage to reveal these familiar works in a
new, thought-provoking light that transcends the question of instrument.”
“Piccinini makes her own magic … Brilliant technical fluency and keen interpretive senses” – Baltimore Sun
“Splendidly recorded … evocative … the playing is first class.” – MusicWeb International | “a rather wonderful musician” – Flute Magazine
J. S. Bach: Flute Sonatas
"Marina Piccinini’s flute-playing is very special, her lyrical phrasing cool, exquisitely shaped and with an underlying
delicate sensuality." Gramophone
"Gorgeous tone, rock-solid rhythm, beautiful phrasing, and no identifiable technical flaws. This is great playing."
American Record Guide (on the Brasil Guitar Duo)

Ysaÿe: Six Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 27
Karl Stobbe, violin
Canadian violinist Karl Stobbe makes an indelible mark with his debut recording for AVIE, a
bold traversal of Ysaÿe’s Six Sonatas for Solo Violin. Seminal works of the 20th century, Ysaÿe
– a virtuoso violinist himself – was inspired by J. S. Bach’s works for solo violin, and remarked,
"at the present day the tools of violin mastery, of expression, technique, mechanism, are far more
necessary than in days gone by. In fact they are indispensable, if the spirit is to express itself without restraint.” Stobbe handles Ysaÿe’s extended characteristics and virtuoso techniques with
aplomb, imbuing the Sonatas with the highest musical values as well.
AV2310
Karl Stobbe is recognised as one of Canada’s most accomplished and diverse violinists. Whether as a concertmaster, soloist, chamber musician, or teacher, Karl is known for his dedication to excellence on the
violin and classical music in all its forms. He has appeared in North America’s most notable concert halls,
including Carnegie Hall, Boston’s Jordan Hall, the National Arts Centre in Ottowa, Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto and Segerstrom Hall in
Costa Mesa, California. As a chamber musician and soloist, Karl has shared the stage with many leading and diverse violinists of our day,
from James Ehnes to Mark O’Connor. Also an accomplished luthier, Karl’s passion for the construction and mechanics of the violin contributes to his utmost ability as a performer.
“soulful musicianship” – San Francisco Classical Voice | “a clinic in the art of violin playing” – Winnipeg Free Press
Perspectives 6
AV2293
Beethoven: Piano Sonatas No. 10 in G major , Op. 14 No. 2 / No. 30 in E major , Op. 109
Berio: Six Encor es: Er denklavier / Six Encor es: Wasser klavier / Six Encor es: Luftklavier
Six Encores: Feuerklavier | Schumann: Fantasie in C major, Op. 17
Andreas Haefliger (piano)
On ‘Perspectives 6’ Andreas Haefliger juxtaposes the Piano Sonatas of Beethoven with other composers,
casting an enlightening glow on the works which one would not detect if played in isolation. Themes of
humanity, nature and love run through a programme emphatically to be listened to rather than analysed
intellectually. Haefliger opens with Beethoven’s early Piano Sonata No. 10, Op. 14, then segues into two
of Berio’s seldom heard encores, Erdenklavier and Wasserklavier. He emerges to perform Beethoven’s late
Piano Sonata No. 30, Op. 109, followed by two more miniatures by Berio, Luftklavier and Feuerklavier.
The album culminates with Schumann’s Fantasy in C major.
Haefliger’s critically and commercially successful Perspectives series mirrors his live recitals, and vivid
memories linger in audiences who have heard his numerous performances of these works throughout Europe and the USA.

“Mullova plays the two solo concertos elegantly, with beautiful precision and, in the
middle movement, considerable eloquence.” July 2013
“Breezy tempi, scintillating details and muscular bowing in the allegros cede to slow movements
of thoughtfully differentiated timbres” July 2013 ****
“Mullova plays the glorious ‘Siciliano’ second movement beautifully, while tongue-in-cheek elaborations in the accompaniment lend a sense of uninhibited exuberance to the finale… The two original concertos match anything else on disc.”
August 2013
“The Violin Concertos in E major and A minor are served wonderfully. Both performances are transparent and light but
always expressively engaging… Dantone’s continuo in the first movement of the E major finds Mullova revealing a tremendous depth of feeling.”July/August 2013

Villette: O sacr um convivium Op. 27 | Hymne à la Vier ge, Op. 24 | Attende Domine, Op. 45
The Choir of King’s College London, David Trendell
Winner of the coveted Prix de Rome, Alfred Desenclos remains an almost unknown figure in 20th-century music. His contribution to the distinguished French tradition of Requiem Mass settings dates from 1963; incorporating influences from Gregorian chant as well as rich harmonies based on added-note chords, this piece with its
passionate outpourings is a revelation. It forms the centrestone of David Trendell’s programme, which also
features music by Villette – who shared Desenclos’ interest in jazz – and Poulenc, that represent some of the
most significant religious choral music of the 20th century.
“This undergraduate choir has a formidable musical unity under David Trendell...Desenclos’s Requiem (1963)
is spaciously dignified and meditative.” The Sunday Times

“At long last we have a worthy recording of the Bartók Second Concerto ... This will be valuable in helping to spread a knowledge of an important work in Bartok's output which is rarely heard in the concert hall. Géza
Anda in particular is to be congratulated for the way he romps through any difficulties ... There is no lack of recordings of the more popular Third Concerto, but the new one is, to my mind, way ahead of the field.” Gramophone

Simon Smith (Steinway model D piano) with Richard Beauchamp and John Cameron
“This career-retrospective offers a fascinating glimpse of how a series of strokes affected Alfred Schnittke’s
work. Captured by Simon Smith with extraordinary sensitivity, detail and emotional commitment.”
The Independent
“ The young British pianist Simon Smith gives compelling, expressive performances. Schnittke's reputation grows ever greater in death
than in life.” The Observer

Letter to K.S. Stanislavsky / Songs (14), Op. 34 / 6 Songs, Op. 38
Evelina Dobraceva, Ekaterina Siurina (sopr anos), Justina Gringyte (mezzo-soprano), Daniil Shtoda (tenor),
Andrei Bondarenko, Rodion Pogossov (bar itones), Alexander Vinogradov (bass) & Iain Burnside (piano)
This is the first complete recording for 20 years of Rachmaninov’s published song output. With the addition of
two delightfully comic occasional pieces, it lays two further claims to importance: Delphian's seven singers –
hand-picked by renowned pianist Iain Burnside – are all native Russian speakers, and every song is performed
in the key in which Rachmaninov wrote it, respecting both the specificity of vocal colour and the carefully designed tonal and expressive trajectory within each opus.
For the first 25 years of his career Rachmaninov regularly expressed himself in song, from Tchaikovskian beginnings to the very personal range of vocal and pianistic utterance in his final two collections. Almost a century after exile brought down the
curtain on this period of his creative output, Burnside and his singers bring these works to shimmering, gushing, crackling, magnificent life.
“This is a richly rewarding and fascinating set...[Vinogradov] sings these epics with a marvellously fluent legato...But the star of the show
is undoubtedly Burnside, playing throughout with unfailing intensity and sensitivity: voice and piano are truly equal partners here, and the
results are electrifying.” The Daily Telegraph
“Eighteen years have passed since the last survey of Rachmaninov’s songs — all written between 1890, when the composer was 17, and 1917,
when he left Russia for good — appeared on disc...Burnside restricts himself to the published sets and a couple of bonus items. The comic
Were You Hiccupping, Natasha? and A Letter to KS Stanislavsky are among 73 songs in all, divided among seven singers. Burnside’s brilliant
playing — certainly the equal of Shelley’s technically, but more sensitive to the needs of his singers — allures the ear at every turn, which
can’t be said of the forceful voices of Evelina Dobraceva, Rodion Poggossov and Justyna Gringyte — although Gringyte delivers a mystical
Christ Is Risen without pushing. The stars are Andrei Bondarenko and Alexander Vinogradov, both young but mature interpreters. Daniil
Shtoda, a sometime Gergiev protégé, shows himself as stylish and thoughtful in A Dream and The Little Island. Ekaterina Siurina’s sweet
soprano comes into its own in the Op 38 set, while she and Vinogradov make something special of Two Farewells. Mixed results, but the best
is superb.” HC, The Sunday Times “A feast of song.” | BBC Magazine

Volkmar Andreae: Symphony in F / Li-Tai-Pe, Op.37 (1931) Eight Chinese Songs for Tenor and
Orchestra / Concertino for Oboe and Orchestra, Op.42 (World Premiere Recording)
Benjamin Hulett (tenor ), John Anderson (oboe), Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra,
GMCD7400
Marc Andreae (conductor )
This is the latest volume in Guild's series of recordings of the music of the great Swiss composer and conductor
Volkmar Andreae (1879-1962), and the third of his orchestral music. A distinguished aspect of these orchestral
recordings is that they are all conducted by the composer's grandson, the much-admired Marc Andreae, which
gives the performances a genuine sense of authority. These are all new recordings, made in England by the greatly
distinguished Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. To judge by the reaction to our earlier issues of Andreae's music, we are confident this new release will be widely welcomed, not least for the oboe playing of John Anderson in
the Concertino, and the singing of Benjamin Hulett in the wonderful Li-Tai-Pe songs.

Antonio Pasculli, who lived from 1842 to 1924 was a legendary Italian oboist and composer, who became known as "the Paganini of the oboe"
owing to his astonishing technical virtuosity on the oboe and cor anglais and for his superb compositional skills. He left a lot of music for the
cor anglais as well as for the oboe, and we are particularly proud to present this complete recital devoted to some of his most brilliant compositions for the instrument, with many of his works based upon famous themes from Italian operas of the 19th-century. In addition, this outstandingly played and recorded CD includes music by two earlier composers for the cor anglais, and the result is a dazzling display of virtuoso playing and expressive characterisation by Martin Frutiger, one of the leading exponents on the cor anglais currently before the public.

Othmar Schoeck (1886-1957: Festlicher Hymnus Op. 64 for large orchestra (1950)
Overture to William Ratcliff (by Heinrich Heine) Op.29 | Ernst Widmer (1927-1990): Concerto for piano, percussion and orchestra Op. 160** | Adolf Brunner (1901-1992): Partita for piano and orchestra
Fali Pavri (piano), Simon Lowdon, Heather Corbett, John Poulter, Alan Stark (per cussions), Martin Gibson (timpani), *Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Rainer Held (conductor )
This CD, with four world premiere releases, offers a representative slice of 20th-century Swiss music, ranging
from Othmar Schoeck’s late-Romanticism via the neoclassicism of Adolf Brunner to the Modernism of Ernst
Widmer. Nearly fifty years separate Schoeck’s first and last major orchestral works, recorded here – but his commitment to the German Romantic tradition remains undimmed. Brunner’s neoclassical Partita betrays the influence of Hindemith, but has a Brahmsian meatiness to its piano part, while Widmer’s influences in his exuberant
concerto range from Bartók to Brazilian street music.

Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Einstudier ung: Florian Helgath
Bamberger Symphoniker - Bayerische Staatsphilharmonie, Robin Ticciati
SACD7193
Robin Ticciati is in his fifth season as Principal Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He will
begin his tenure as Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 2014.
The Mass No. 3 in F minor WAB 28 by Anton Bruckner is a setting of the mass ordinary for vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra, and organ ad libitum. After the 1867 success of Bruckner's Mass No. 1 in D minor, he was
commissioned "to write a new Mass for the Burgkapelle." Bruckner wrote the first version between Septembers
1867 - 1868, in Linz (just before his move to Vienna) made slight revisions in 1877 and 1881, in preparation for
performances at the Hofkapelle, mainly to address "difficulties of execution" but also to take into account what he had learned from studying
Mozart's Requiem, correcting some instances of parallel octaves if not justified by Mozart's example. In the 1890s Bruckner was still revising
the work, but there were very little changes made to the vocal parts after 1868. The composer dedicated the piece Hofrat Imhof at "the last
minute." Leopold Nowak, however, believed that the piece was actually dedicated to conductor Johann Herbeck.

“[Schenkel] is quite simply the most accomplished boy soprano I have ever heard. His voice
is strong and agile yet innocent and pure in timbre. He clearly understands the text and delivers it with patient sincerity...He shapes phrases beautifully and adds some discreet but pleasing ornamentation...there is is a pleasing contrast between [the voices] of Schenkel and Potter.”

Six sonates en trio pour deux violons et la Basse Continue, OEuvre IV
Ensemble Rosasolis
Marieke Bouche, violon, Guillaume Humbrecht, violon, Nicolas Crnjanski, violoncelle, Julie Blais,
clavecin
MF8018
The trio sonata originated in Italy and was extensively used by Corelli and Vivaldi.
Leclair had a special talent which declared itself very early on in his instrumental output and especially in
Op.4. The slow movements of this collection display a contrapuntal sense unique in the French music of the
time, a feel for the long phrase that justifies his nickname of ‘the French Bach’ – or “Everything announces
him as the French Corelli”, according to Charles-Henri de Blainville
In this collection abounding in formal innovations and timbral experiments, Leclair is careful not to overload
the harmonic language. And so French flowers of new colours bloomed in Corelli’s classical garden!
Ensemble Rosasolis was founded in 2003 by musicians with aim to shar e their passion for 17th - and 18th-century vocal and instrumental music, and approach it in a true chamber-music spirit.

grateful. The Ensemble Allegria is well named since ‘Allegria’ translates as ‘merriment’ and the overwhelming
impression one gets while listening to these superb young musicians is that they’re all having a really enjoyable
time making music together. This is communicated very powerfully in these performances.” MusicWeb, Steve

Then our friends from Belgium aiming to create a varied and contrasting
sound-world with, La Roza Enflorese brings together instruments from different places and periods (vieles, rape, lute, vihuela, recorders, crumhorns,
and percussion from the Near and Middle East). While this instrumental
richness contrasts with the Sephardic tradition, in which songs were performed by a
female singer accompanied at most by a frame drum, it nonetheless exemplifies the
influences which enriched this tradition after the 1492 diaspora. This approach seems
especially appropriate at a time when cultural boundaries are being erased (at least
through the arts) and when culture is becoming more and more a matter of encounters.

“A Delightful recital of traditional Sephardic songs full of authentic colour. [E] Edith Saint-Mard performs with a fairly typical folk singer's stamp She is skilled and at the same time restrained in her use of ornament. Michael Nader is an excellent foil to her. Instrumentalist
and singers together help to create an exceptional climate of nostalgia, mostly sad, but not without its moments of joy and humor.”

“From the first listen of the album La Roza Enflorese, I let myself go to the fascination... seduced by the realization of these Belgian artists
that vibrated a different color, a more restrained spontaneity, in a manner so classic my Sephardic culture. (…) I remain appreciative to the
performances of these young musicians of cittern, flute, of Crumhorn, lute, viol, percussion. These aren't warble votes or broken, soft muestras
s'nonas that rocked my childhood or that I listed in my children, but the resonances of a distinction rare and beneficial, sometimes, and I do
not deny it, perhaps more strict, to capture! Emotions, images sometimes transparent, sometimes silent, or smiling escape from these romances, of these traditions women, memories of all the newspapers... A CD that should be part of the disco of the perfect gentleman!”
