John was born in Salina, Kansas and received his BA in Architecture from Kansas State University. After practicing architecture
for 35 years in Bellevue as principal of Lewis Architecture + Interior Design, John retired to become an artist full time. He is also
a member artist at the Parklane Gallery (co-op) in Kirkland, Wa., and a store artist at the Kirkland Arts Center Store, Park Place,
Kirkland, Wa. John taught drawing and watercolor at Kansas State University during graduate school. Visualization of space and
form are the two principles that most guide him in artistic expression. John is continually experimenting with technique and
refining his style. John also writes short stories, is a humorist and plays drums for the Blue Lizard Band, classic rock.
"Sketching - This theme is important to me because of my fascination with light and shadow, with mass and void and sense
of place in all my art subjects. I like to take ordinary objects and space and express it, giving it an emotional sense of place in
the viewer’s perspective. I want to give them a different way of looking at how light and dark paints the scene into which they
want to explore with mind and vision."

Valencia Carroll
www.valenciafineart.com
Valencia Carroll completed her classical fine art training through the Gage Academy of Art - Classical Atelier program. Her
primary media include oil, graphite and charcoal.
Valencia is particularly attracted to work that is painterly yet appears so real and sensitively rendered that it seems to take on a
life of its own. Through careful attention to drawing and value structure, Valencia strives to achieve these elements in her own
work as well.
Valencia’s work has exhibited at various locations throughout Western Washington including:
Seattle City Hall
Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue
Bastyr University
Art/Not Terminal
Gage Academy of Art
She was most recently awarded “Best in Show” at the Arts of the Terrace 35th Annual Juried Art Show 2013 and had a sell out
show at the 2013 Burien Arts – Vision 20/20 event.

I like to explore how animals show us the fleeting secrets of the natural (and unnatural) world. The more I familiarize myself with
them, the more they teach me and the more they leave me wondering what's next. But they always insist on going weird places
and doing the unexpected. My animals always outsmart me, especially when I try harder to get to know them. I guess I still have
a lot to learn.
This nudibranch in particular was tricky. He liked to dazzle me with his colors and protest the normal underwater environment,
especially once the last month of the year rolled around. But it was quite fun to play with him.

Having an interest and appreciation for visual arts most of my life inspired the desire to learn about various mediums and
techniques. The learning process is a never ending journey that can be challenging but also gratifying. I now look at the world
around me in a very different way and my life is richer for it.
Lately I find myself attracted to pencil drawings. Such a simple tool can create amazing variations of technique and an impressive
world of images.
One thing I have learned along the way is the importance of inspiration. When you are inspired by your subject matter it then
becomes a joyful experience to create.

Children possess art as an intrinsic perspicacity which in most is diminished as they mature. Yet there are some who continue to
hold the vision.
There is much more making of art than practicing it, though with the making, concepts and manual skills are developed and
honed, albeit more intuitively than not. The making is merely a manifestation of the seeing which is the indispensable element.
Whether one wears a beret and a smock and works at an easel with the round head of a Picasso or the sharp nose of a Leonardo,
or whether they build furniture, landscapes or websites, if the person sees like an artist then by simply being, they are, regardless
of superfluous details.
Mostly the subjects of my art need to keep my interest and hopefully, elicit an emotional response without being affected,
cloying or blunt, yet not as dull as the mother bear’s porridge.
I strive to proceed mindfully, yet to allow for exuberance and pursue innovation when they might arise.

“I am enthralled by the beauty in minute details whether it is in a flower, a portrait, an animal picture or a landscape. I simply
cannot let a painting or drawing be finished until the details seem right to me. I also love to push the colors to their most
vibrant hues. Perhaps it is from my background as a research nurse where details mattered, or my love of sewing, and quilting
where color is so engaging, but it seems to be an innate trait of mine. It has led me to colored pencil where I can get those fine
details or to painting very slowly in a realistic style.”
Judy started painting and drawing in 1997 after retiring from nephrology nursing (B.S. Stanford Univ. and M.A. Univ. of WA.)
and bicycling across the United States on a tandem with her husband Bill. Several pictures were drawn from photos she took at
Seattle Children's Hospital when she was volunteering there for 10 years and are a tribute to the marvelous work of the staff. She
is currently getting her kid-fix with her 2 grandsons.
Many landscape and international scenes that she painted are from pictures she took while bicycle touring in Europe and New
Zealand, or traveling in the camper and hiking in the U.S. and Canada. She loves drawing and painting pictures of family
members and people, trying desperately to capture their emotions and actions. “When a scene is special to me I relive the
experience and beauty by painting or drawing it.”
Judy learned many of her artistic skills at the Northshore Senior Center in Bothell while taking drawing and painting classes. She
started out taking colored pencil/drawing from Pam Belcher and oil painting from Linda Bean, then Terri Davis, three fabulous
teachers. In 2012 she switched from oil to Open acrylic painting with the help of Rudy Coffing because of newly diagnosed
asthma. She has also taken some watercolor classes and at times mixes watercolor and colored pencil. She enjoys trying to
pick the most useful medium that can best portray a scene. She organizes the yearly Fine Art Show at the Northshore Senior
Center and has been teaching the drawing/colored pencil class there for 5 years, hoping to pass on her joy of learning art to other
seniors.
A member of the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA207.org/) since 1998, she has shown in many of their local shows. She
was juried into the Cottage Lake Artist Guild, newly named Northwest Artists in Action (www.northwestartistsinaction.com/) in
2005 and has actively participated in more than 45 shows with them. She has also been juried into the Kenmore and LiveArts
Bothell art shows and shown at Kaewyn Gallery and Gallery North in Edmonds.
Although I like the motto “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again’, I also believe in “Do the best you can with the time, energy
and health that you have while concentrating on the beauty and good in life.”

There is a certainty I experience uniquely in the movement of pencil on paper. For me, drawing is stillness and confidence; it's just
the pencil, the paper, and me. What I love about using birds as my subject matter is that they are a rich source of visually intricate
imagery, which pushes me toward the kind of detailed renderings that allow me to move slowly and thoughtfully as I work.
Clothing and posing the birds adds a quiet absurdity to the portraits that makes me smile. No matter if their gaze appears to be
stern, thoughtful, quizzical or amused, I grow fond of my birds' little faces as I draw them out on the page. I imagine their stories,
pleased with myself for trapping them on paper for all to see.

S.A. Stirling
Ms. Stirling is a native of Northeast Washington but has been in the Olympia area over 25 years, with a two year hiatus for a
Peace Corps adventure in the South Pacific. She has traveled extensively with her husband and daughter in various corners of
the world as well as the US. They made a lucky exit from Egypt in 2011 hours before the revolution in Cairo and, more recently,
explored Argentinian Patagonia and Buenes Aires as well as, in a more relaxed fashion, Shirley and Bob visited the Midwest US
and a number of national parks.
She studied art briefly in college before settling on a more ‘practical’ career and has recently rededicated herself to a pursuit
of art. She especially admires traditional drawing from antiquity (which was often a preparation for painting and not an end
product) and the impressionism that followed us beyond the industrial revolution, leading to non-representational art and many
other exciting art forms.
She has participated in Olympia area figure drawing sessions and privately studied the 1940’s era drawing method by Kimon
Nicolaides, ‘The Natural Way to Draw’. Most recently dabbling in mixed media, the ‘line and wash’ pieces shown at City of
Kenmore reflect her interest in both line and color. In an effort to ‘free’ the drawing line she is using a sharpened and flattened
match stick as a dip pen with India Ink, having attached it to a pencil-sized bamboo length that her husband cut from a stand
in their back yard. The watercolor washes are completed with a one inch onion tip oval brush and a size ten rigger on rough
watercolor paper. She is currently working on a series of Olympia area architectural pieces using this technique.

Marjorie Thompson
The best stories are told in layers, where each layer builds upon the prior creating a foundation and a history. By using old book
pages, words, line, color and texture, local Seattle artist, Marjorie Thompson, lets her subjects take shape through the luminous
beauty of encaustic wax painting.
Thompson was born and raised in Aberdeen, WA. Her father was a well known local artist. He brought her up in his art studio
providing her with art instruction and mentorship. She grew up with painting in oil and acrylic, yet, encaustic painting has
become her new love since 2010.
Encaustic is an ancient method of combining hot beeswax, pigments and demar tree resin that dates back to Egyptian times. The
wax is heated to 200F on a hot palette and applied to a firm porous support with brushes. Once applied to the working surface,
the wax can be further manipulated by dripping, incising, scraping, embedding, torching and building surface texture with
additional medium and/or pigment layer by layer and fusing it together with a heat gun or torch.
"Old paper has a story to tell. I love the written word especially in the form of vintage book pages. I often use the pages from
old dictionaries, old text books and old letters embedded into the layers of my paintings. The paper itself is fascinating as it
contains a history by holding incites, stories and knowledge. I feel by recycling these pages in my artwork, I am helping to carry
forward the written word in a digital world.
Encaustic painting allows me to use paper and drawings in the layers of the painting. The hot beeswax has a beautiful
translucent quality that allows these embedded treasures to peek through in a way that context is no longer the guide. These
little bits that are seen allow us to make up our own stories based on the snippets that make their way into view.
My paintings begin with several layers of wax, using color, texture, hand drawn sketches, and bits of paper. I let my intuition
take the lead as the painting gets under way. More layers, more mark making, more paper start to bring the subject and
image to the surface. Often there are words of inspiration hidden among the layers. Ones, that while not visible on the surface
hold deep meaning to the painting. Some layers, paper, sketches and drawings are totally covered and remain part of the
foundation of the painting. I feel these hidden layers add richness and history to the artwork. "

"I love color! I get a great deal of pleasure from adding color to a blank page and, then later, seeing how colors interact.
Sometimes I take delight in just one particular color in my work and how it brings everything together. Deciding upon and
developing a design is intellectually satisfying as it is a puzzle to be figured out. Learning how to do something well is a major
motivator for me. I am drawn to the process of art in the designing, the materials and the doing.
I have been actively involved with textiles and fiber arts for more than twenty years. In 2010 I took up watercolors, and quickly
added drawing and colored pencils. I love to focus on details; artistry and craftsmanship go hand in hand. Sometimes a focus
on detail means perfecting or manipulating a technique. Other times, I like to take an object, zoom in, and focus on it from an
unusual angle. Botanical subjects and everyday objects are often favorite items to draw. In all my work, I get a great deal of
enjoyment and satisfaction from the interplay of color, line, pattern, and texture."

Following retirement in 2008, painting landscapes and nature became John’s primary focus. Many years of outdoor activities and
certification as a Master Birder from Seattle Audubon provide a background for his art.
John has studied with multiple internationally-known artists as well as noted regional artists. These include Scott Christensen,
Richard McKinley, Mitchell Albala, Tom Hoffmann, Suzanne Brooker and Molly Hashimoto. His primary medium is oil, but he
also works in watercolor. John greatly enjoys plein air painting and uses plein air field studies as reference material for his studio
work. He has been the plein air coordinator for the Evergreen Association of Fine Arts (EAFA) for the last two years.
His paintings have been published in the Licton Springs Review, Fairfax County Virginia (Parks and Recreations), multiple
websites, and are in private collections throughout the country. Additionally as a photographer and author, John has had many
images and articles published. These include Country Discoveries magazine, Cornell University Lab of Ornithology website, King
County Parks kiosk (Marymoor Park), Seattle Audubon website, and Washington Ornithological Society newsletter among others.
He has also provided the photography for three record albums.
Selected juried shows in which his paintings have been accepted include Gage Academy; EAFA Open, Members and Plein
Air shows; Kenmore Art Show; Maple Valley Creative Arts Council Show and North Seattle Community College students’ and
instructors’ show.
John lives in Snoqualmie, Washington and his paintings often feature the beautiful landscapes of the Snoqualmie Valley and the
great Pacific Northwest. Additionally, he has painted the Deschutes River canyon in central Oregon while doing an annual raft
trip that has extended over almost thirty years and also enjoys painting Southwest desert scenes.

Jesse is 19.
She has a Rick Nielsen tattoo.
She spends her days disliking writing artist autobiographies, thinking about maybe going to college, regretting the idea of using
colored pencils, and wondering when will she ever have a band.
