Echoes Across the River
This October we will be focusing on Biblical teaching
regarding generosity and stewardship. I realize that this can
often times be a sensitive subject in church. As we get started
on the teaching, I want to share a few thoughts with you.
First, I want you to know that I am going to talk about
generosity in the same way that I talk about everything else. I
think I have been here long enough for you to know that I am
passionate about Jesus Christ. I love the Lord, His Church, and
His Word. I get excited when I share Biblical truth. This month, as
you hear me preaching about generosity, I hope you will note that I do so with as
much love and enthusiasm as I do when I preach on prayer, spiritual growth,
marriage, worship, outreach, and every other Biblical topic!
Second, I promise to be sensitive in my teaching. I will be careful and
thoughtful with my words. At the same time, I am going to be doing my best to
encourage every member of the church (and person who considers KFUMC their
church home) to follow the Biblical teaching in regard to finances and money.
Specifically, I will be encouraging every household to tithe (give 10% of their
household income). Leviticus 27.30 says, “A tithe of everything from the land,
whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the
Lord.” This, of course, is just one example of many explicit teachings in the Bible that
calls on God’s people to tithe.
Third, if you find yourself feeling sensitive to the teaching on generosity, I’d
like to invite you to pray about why you are feeling that way. Sometimes I am most
vulnerable about a subject when God is trying to teach me something new. After
praying, I know you will be obedient to however God leads you. My obedience to
God requires I share openly and honestly about the Biblical witness regarding
generosity. Just as I know you respect that in me, I will respect you in your
obedience too.

What is Mine?
"The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it.” Psalm 24:1
God has made us in His image, and that is why we like to create as God has created and still is creating.
But there is a problem that comes with this blessed gift to create; it is the temptation to want to own.
1 Corinthians 10:26 says, “For the earth and its fullness are the Lord’s.” Everything and everyone in this
world belongs to God because without Him there would be nothing. This is an easy concept to say but a much harder one
to fully comprehend. It means that possessions I have bought like my truck, my clothes, my library, my watch, and my wedding ring are not really mine. It means that my degrees that I have worked so hard to earn are not really mine. It means
that my three beautiful children whom I have helped clothe, feed, and raise are not really mine. It means everything that I
have worked to achieve that I have called mine, is really not mine but ultimately God’s!
God has given us the authority to be His stewards. What an awesome privilege our Creator has bestowed upon us! That
His beautiful creation which He has called good is in our hands to be taken care of. I recently had the opportunity to sign a
transfer of ownership contract in which I wrote down a list of possessions and people. I signed my name to be the owner no
longer but only to be the steward. The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it. My prayer is that I keep this ever in my mind
and be the greatest steward I can be of God’s treasured possessions while I have breath in my lungs.
Ultimately, the only thing that is mine is the blessed assurance that Jesus Christ has redeemed me and by grace, and I
will spend eternal life worshipping the glory of God. In the end, that’s the only thing I really need to call mine. Thanks be to
God who makes all, owns all and redeems all who have faith in Jesus Christ!

Did You Know?

Yes, we have a “Feed Our Sheep”
meal ministry at our church now! I
hope you get as excited about it as some of us have.
Let me explain: we all know what it is like when we
come home weak from a hospital stay, or when we
have chauffeured a loved one to appointments in
San Antonio, or if we have a bad cold, have a bereavement situation, or even the good news of coming home with a newborn, but we are tired. How nice
it would be if we could let our church know that we or
a dear church friend is in need of tender loving care,
by way of a meal prepared with love and prayers.
Some of us felt that it would be nice to prepare
casseroles, soup and frozen salad to hold in a freezer
at church to be delivered to parishioners in need. All
that a person has to do is to thaw and heat the food.
Our clergy gave their enthusiastic blessings.
Six of us received Food Service training and have
our certificates. One lady purchased a freezer and
some of us the ingredients that are needed; we
meet in the Education Building Kitchen and have fun.
We are on our second batch of “Feed Our Sheep“
casseroles.
Of course this ministry can only succeed if you, the
congregation, feel that there is a need, and are willing to support the church ministry with your prayers,
financial assistance and service.
Our Lord Jesus prepared a meal for His disciples on
the shore of the Lake of Galilee while He waited for
them to return from fishing. Can we as a church do
less?
If you know someone who could benefit from this
ministry, please contact the church office and make
arrangements to take the food to the member. When
you go, please let the member know that you are
there on behalf of the church.

“God Glimpses” in the Halls and Outside the Walls
of KFUMC

Strangers at My Door
In the weeks after my husband’s death, I would open my eyes in the
morning, and a dark thought would flash in my mind. I could collapse
on the floor in a fetal position and drown in a pool of tears. It sounded so
easy. But suddenly, a father-like voice would interrupt that thought.
“Get up!” I would obey. I found myself showering and dressing like I was
going to work (although I had been retired over a year). Sitting at my
kitchen table, I would draft my “to do” list for that day. Ordinary places...H.E.B., Wal-Mart, bank, post office, and often a lunch with a friend. I
became the queen of list making. But...that was the behavior that sustained me in those early days of widowhood.
One morning the doorbell rang, and I opened the door to a group of
people standing on my porch. A woman spoke and explained that they
had come by a few weeks earlier, and my husband told them I wasn’t
home and asked if they would return another day. My eyes welled up
with tears as I explained my husband had died suddenly two weeks
earlier. One gentleman immediately opened his worn Bible and read
scripture to me. This group of strangers asked if they could pray for me.
They embraced me with God’s comforting words from the Bible. They
lifted my spirits.
Moments after I closed the door, I recalled when they had been at
my door a few weeks earlier. I’m not proud of this incident. I had seen
them approaching our front porch, and I sprinted to the sanctuary of my
bedroom. I had pleaded with my husband Bob to go to the door and
deal with them. He did reluctantly, but I had never asked him what had
transpired. We had left for lunch at a local restaurant soon after they
departed our house. Now I knew. Bob had told them I wasn’t home
(although I was in my bedroom) and invited them to return at a later
date.
What a God glimpse! My Heavenly Father knew I would need to hear
some comforting words. He knew I would appreciate their presence at
a later date, and He gave my husband the words to invite them back to
our home.
This group still returns to my house to check on me. Now I confidently
open the door and let them tell their story, and I share about my church
family. I realize we are all connected by a God that loves us. No more
do I dread their appearance on my street. They are being disciples for
their church. I can tell them how the Holy Spirit has changed my life. I
run toward my Heavenly Father and find refuge in His loving embrace.

became parents of Jeffrey Paul on July 6, 2015.

debt, getting out of debt and managing a
debt crisis. Speaker: Bob Rothe
3) Estate Planning —October 21
John Carlson, estate planning and probate
lawyer, will present the basics of wills and
powers of attorney. Kerwin Overby, CPA, will
speak about the financial aspects of settling an
estate.
4) Elder Care—October 28.
Peterson Hospice will present the many
options available in the Kerrville area for elder
care.
These sessions are open to ANYONE in the
church. You may attend any that you wish, and
there is no fee.

facilitate a five-week study of Crown Finance.

The month of October is when we
see a lot of pink ribbons and a lot of
attention focused on breast cancer.
Of course, this is Breast Cancer
Awareness Month. As I write this, I’m
reminded that on September 30, 2013,
Dan’s and my lives were changed
significantly. That is the day we sat in
the surgeon’s office and heard him
say, “The biopsy confirms it is cancer.”
I sat there numb, in spite of the fact that I knew from a
previous conversation with him that the odds were
against me. Many of you have experienced similar
situations. It may not have been breast cancer or even a
serious illness, but there has been some situation that has
rocked your world.
I am grateful that in the midst of the waiting, the
uncertainty, the surgeries, the recovery, Dan and I had a
church family that was praying for us. We were bathed in
your prayers. On October 11, we will begin our prayer-athon, a time of praying for one another. When we share
our brokenness, we become real—real before one
another and real before our God.
I hope that you received a call from one of our
members and shared a prayer request. If you were not
home or did not receive a call for some reason, it’s not
too late to have your request included in the prayer-athon. Just call the church office at 257-0800, and we will
complete a card for you or stop by and you can do the
same. Let us join together in prayer for one another while
remembering Paul’s words, “Do not worry about
anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to
God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ
Jesus” (Phil. 4: 6-7).

“Witness” Testimony

We’ve had a lot of rain recently. I’ve heard some of you complaining to
see the sun again. Others cry out, “Where is the sun?” And kiddos are upset
that this rainy weather has ruined their field trips. At times like this, we miss that
sunlight. I can relate to these feelings. My testimony sounds similar. “Where is
the Son?”
My name is Nicky Casey, and I grew up in this church. I sat in the back
pews of the early morning service and stared at the stained glass windows of
the sanctuary and the metallic tubes of the organ. I wondered who thought
it was a good idea to put orange carpet over the entire floor in the sanctuary.
Do you remember the orange carpet? I do. And I saw Jesus …. sorta. But my
last year or two of high school was the beginning of my Dark Ages. And fittingly, it started with death—family members of close friends and the loss of
my biological father from leukemia, followed by the death of my grandfather.
I was having a hard time seeing the “Son.” Spring didn’t bring relief like it
usually does. Instead, a fellow student died in a car wreck, other friends suffered from freak accidents that kept them from school for months, and I ended up sick with mono. I was going through a rainy season. I wanted some
“Son”light.
I graduated and went off to college, apparently choosing to take the
black clouds with me. There, I started looking for anything to bring me light.
Maybe some Light Beer would do the trick or even those neon lights from the
honky tonk look good….or maybe if I made myself lighter and prettier, then I
would be happy again. Can anyone relate? Before long, I realized all my
efforts had created a cold, dark, deep, muddy and smelly pit. I was surrounded by others, yet lonely as ever. Finally, in my junior year, I heard a voice say,
“Enough.” I no longer wanted to sit in my mud bath. I started journaling. It felt
funny to just write down my feelings, so instead I thought I would just write to
God. At first, I wrote what I thought He wanted me to write, but after realizing
he already knows everything about me, I made the decision to write the truth.
Have you ever written or spoken the truth to God? The real truth? It’s not
pretty. My heart was full of ugliness, full of lies, full of anger, full of self-pity. But
I wrote it all down. I started to see a change in my attitude, in my outlook on
life. Even though my heart was changing a bit, I was still choosing to live a
wild lifestyle. I was still looking for the “light” in all the wrong places.
I graduated from college a little happier and had a better idea of what
was important to me, but I was still looking for light. I ended up in Austin.
There were sports events, people of all kinds, and 6th street. Lots of lights
there. I led a double life. During the day I would listen to others’ broken lives,
their torn hearts and try to tell them that there’s light…light from Jesus that
could release them from pain and heal; but no one would listen. Oh well, I’ll
just take them out for a drink later. My idea of helping others was to tell them
the truth, but not show it in my own life.
When I was 23, I discovered I was pregnant. My friends advised me to have
an abortion, but I couldn’t do it. Something inside me said “No!”. Once I
made that decision, my demeanor changed and funny enough, so did my
circumstances. Friends started backing away and excluding me, and my
work closed doors of opportunity. Everything was pushing me back home.
So I came home. It wasn’t what I thought I wanted, but it was everything I
needed. Joy filled me. Here I was back home unmarried, pregnant... and
happy. Looking back, that was one of the most joyous times of my life. I
laughed so much during that pregnancy and what a coincidence, I was
back in my home church too.
The birth of my son is where IT happened. Scales were removed from my
eyes. That day I learned a deeper, unexplainable love that many of you
understand but can’t explain either. The closest word is unconditional. You
don’t understand it until you realize it’s been given even when you don’t deserve it. Here was my offering to God through the years…excessive drinking,
carelessness, foolishness, being vulgar, dishonest, unfaithful; and my punishment for all my selfishness was…..a baby? The greatest gift? The miracle of
life? That’s how God was going to punish my sins? For me to learn and feel
the strongest love I’d ever experienced? What kind of God does that?
Rewards you for your mistakes? The way, the truth, and the Light does…JESUS
CHRIST. He was there through it all. As He hung on the cross He paid the
price for my sins. He did all of this so that today, He can pursue me, never
leave me, stand by me, shout when I need to hear it, and give me a baby so I
could experience great love. Only He could take that sin for me so I could be
shown real unconditional love. He is the LIGHT I had been looking for.
I was so blind, but now I see. I’m still broken, and I actually hope for more
moments where my eyes are opened. Maybe some of you are going
through a rainy season. Are you talking to God and being honest with Him?
Really honest? It took what I thought was my biggest mistake, unwed and
pregnant, to realize there is nothing that will separate me from Jesus’ love. He
will show you dreams in your heart you weren’t even aware of. So, if you’re
going through a rainy season or even your Dark Ages…just know The LIGHT,
the True Eternal Light is always there. Open your heart, and your eyes will see.

covers the flu shot completely. Medicaid unfortunately
still does not cover the flu shot.
2) Vouchers from Walgreens will be available if you
have no insurance. The voucher program makes the
shot free for those who are uninsured.
3) Walgreens will accept cash or check for the cash
price of the shot ($25.99).
The process is quick and easy. Please mark your calendar and set aside a few minutes of your time. The
benefits of getting the flu shot are many including protecting yourself, and keeping you from spreading the
flu to your family and other people.

If you have any severe, life-threatening allergies.
If you ever had Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).

church and local outreach ministries. Help is always needed in
various stations at the sale. Baked goods are also needed for the
bake sale in the Assembly Room, October 3 (cakes, cookies,

First Baptist in Houston, TX. Ryan is an orthopedic surgeon here in Kerrville. Charla
plays the keyboard in the Contemporary Service.

Methodist Church, Johnson City, TX. They are retired educators.
Sept 16: Griff Carnes: by transfer of his membership from another denomination in
Kerrville. He is a retired banker and founder of the Cowboy Artists Museum, Kerrville.

Methodist Church, Lufkin, TX. They are retired.
