National Chair
Welcome to the last edition
of In The Pipeline for 2012
We are now getting well into the realms
of the dinner season, and already many
successful events have been held by the
South East, Wales and West, Scottish,
Northern and Midlands Branches. All the
dinners have been very well attended and
we are extremely proud to have been able to
raise substantial funds for charity at each of
these events.
Over the past 2 months the Guild has had
an increased outward focus with stands at
Gastech and No-Dig Live exhibitions. I had
the pleasure of chairing the Guild’s Centre of
Technical Excellence Session on Pipelines
and Transmission at Gastech where several
of our members presented on their areas
of expertise and technologies. These
events gave us a great opportunity to meet
informally with potential members as well as
our new and established members and to
support those who participated.
In an aim to continue to promote the Guild
internationally, you will have seen that Cheryl
recently attended IPLOCA in Istanbul, and
we intend to further strengthen global links
with members of the International Panel
having met with World Gas to discuss Guild
participation in their convention to be held in
Paris in 2015.
We have a full programme of events for the
New Year and one of the most prominent is
the 56th National Dinner which will take place
on 12th March 2013. The guest speaker
will be Rory Bremner, and we are now taking
bookings for this prestigious event.
This edition of In The Pipeline is once again
packed with many great articles which again
demonstrate the diversity and innovation that
our members are currently showcasing. It
is so encouraging to see our members and
their achievements in the news and to be
able to report upon them.
Our Technical Panels are extremely busy
putting together programmes for the up and
coming conferences
and the first of these is Subsea Pipelines
Integrity Management 2012 which has
been organised by the Offshore Panel
in conjuction with Subseas UK and The
Society of Underwater Technology and will
take place at The Institute of Mechanical
Engineers in London this coming Friday 7th
December. This will be followed the Onshore
Panel Conference, and details of this will be
available in the very near future. The Utilities
Panel have also organised two seminar
sessions on PE Welding and Asset Condition
Assessment. These will be initially delivered
in co-operation with the Northern Branch as
part of their current technical programme.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity
to personally wish everyone a very merry
Christmas and a happy and prosperous New
Year. I’m sure that the positivity which has
been seen from our members in 2012 will
be carried over to next year to bring another
thriving and successful year in 2013.
Guild Member Farm Services are Contractor
of the Year Finalist
Specialist land drainage contractors,
Farm Services Limited are celebrating two
significant achievements. Not only has the
company reached the grand old age of
seventy, but they also reached the final of
this year’s Farmer’s Weekly Contractor of
the Year Award.
‘Oscars’ of agricultural and farming, are
very competitive, attracting numerous
entries from the whole of the UK. The
judging took place earlier in the year and
a panel of industry experts gave each
company a thorough grilling.
The company was founded in 1942 by
the local miller and Forester and company
director, Rob Burtonshaw said “It is a huge
achievement in the current times to be
celebrating our 70th birthday. We would
like to thank all the staff who have worked
for the company over the past 70 years
who have all contributed to making the
business the success that it is today.”
Only three finalists were selected and
the winner was announced during a
black tie event at The Grosvenor House
Hotel on London’s Park Lane in October.
Unfortunately Farm Services was not
awarded the overall crown, but being the
first drainage contractor ever nominated for
the awards brought them a great level of
satisfaction.

Radius Systems’ bespoke engineered PE systems bring cost
savings and environmental benefits to water customers
Radius Systems are currently supplying
innovative pipeline solutions for two large
diameter water projects: a new hydro
electricity scheme in Gerlan, North Wales and
the rehabilitation of a large diameter pipeline
in the Severn Trent Water area.
Working together with the Derwent Hydro
project team to develop an optimised
system for the new hydro electricity pipeline
in Gerlan, Radius Systems are currently
supplying over 2.5km of 710mm black
PE100 pipe in standard and bespoke SDRs,
with a range of fittings adapted to suit. The
pipeline conveys water from two separate
water courses, which are at different inlet
heights, the highest of which is 136m above
the turbine inlet. Three pipe SDRs were
supplied, including SDR12.4 a 14 bar pipe,
which was selected over standard SDR11
16 bar pipe. The pipes were specially
manufactured with a view to optimise the
system’s hydraulic performance, minimise
material usage and reduce the
impact on the environment.
In the Severn Trent Water area,
Radius Systems have worked
closely with Laing O’Rourke to
engineer a solution for a strategic
39” metallic pipeline. 9.3km of
937mm dark blue PE100 pipe with
an SDR of 51 has been specified
to be inserted as a liner into the
metallic host main, using a pipefolding technique to reduce its’
diameter.
Once in place, the pipe is
pressurised to achieve its’ final dimension.
The PE pipe ensures water quality and leaktightness and acts as a semi-structural liner
deriving its’ strength from the main. Brent
Eastell design engineer for Laing O’Rourke
commented “This is one of the largest and
most innovative projects we are involved in
at the moment. Relining the pipeline has
brought considerable material and installation
cost savings to Severn Trent Water,
compared to replacing the whole metallic
pipeline. Choosing a pipe insertion technique
has also kept disruption to the environment
to a minimum.”

Steel Pipes Chosen for Mitcheldean Resilience Project
FT Pipeline Systems (FTPS) has recently
been involved in the supply of 7kms of
600mm diameter steel water pipe for
the Mitcheldean Resilience Project in
Gloucestershire. Different materials were
considered for this scheme, but due to the
high level of contamination at various areas
along the route, steel was the preferred
option. Specifically, three layer polyethylene
coated, welded steel pipes with seal coated
cement linings were successfully installed.
The over-riding benefit of the pipes supplied
by FTPS for this scheme lies in the superior
corrosion protection provided by three layer
polyethylene according to DIN 30670. In
accordance with this standard, the selection
of the
coating
material is
governed
by the
effects of
mechanical,
thermal or
chemical stresses involved in this application.
Within the framework of the application
areas mentioned in DIN 30670, polyethylene
coating is suitable for all classes of soil,
rendering extensive soil tests unnecessary.
The PE coating used by FT Pipeline Systems
is a 3-layer system designated ACS-III
(Anti- Corrosion System).
The 3 layers are comprised of a fusion
bonded epoxy to 150 microns, adhesive
to 100 microns and 2-3mm heat bonded,
seamless, polyethylene depending on the
pipe diameter. The exceptional properties
of the 3 layer coating are based on the
adhesion between the 3 layers.
In addition to this, welded steel removes
the need for thrust blocks or other restraint
on the 25 bar rated main. Fittings, with
any degree of bend, tee, pup or any end
configuration, were supplied as required.
The pipe joints were protected with Canusa
heat shrink sleeves. Canusa polyethylene
sleeves are the highest quality pipe joint
protection available. They are heat activated
/ PE wraps for corrosion protection of all
types of jointing method. The sleeves are
quick to install as there is no need to prime or
profile the pipe, making them extremely cost
effective.
As with the previous works for the Gloucester
Security of Supply, also supplied via FT
Pipeline Systems and Morgan Sindall (26km
600mm), the main is to be cathodically
protected due to the low resistivity soils
present in the area. Welded steel pipes,
being electrically connected, are very simply
and cheaply protected by sacrificial anode or
other cathodic protection systems.
The design and supply of coated and
lined steel pipe, backed up with cathodic
protection represents a belt and braces
approach to a strategically vital pipeline for
Severn Trent Water.

Daniel Contractors go the extra mile
At this year’s Society of British Water and Wastewater Industries
AGM Awards Dinner, Daniel Contractors was delighted to be
announced as the winner of the prestigious SBWWI People
Award. The Award recognises individuals that have ‘gone the
extra mile’, and was presented to Daniel and United Utilities who
have worked in partnership over the last 6 years refurbishing the
Thirlmere Aqueduct.
As part of Daniel’s Project and Community Charter with United
Utilities, in July this year, sixty five employees from Daniel, United
Utilities and Site Electrical gave Dean Gibson Primary School
in Kendal a once in a lifetime ‘makeover’, as part of a team
building initiative with a difference. Instead of a traditional team
bonding session, the team wanted to do something inspirational
which would make a big difference to the community and the
lives of local people. By providing materials, plant and especially
manpower, major improvements including turfing play areas,
mending tennis courts, re-building walls, and creating new paths
and fences were made to the Primary School, all of which will
have a long lasting impact on the lives of the local community.
Senior Project Manager Paul Anderton, of United Utilities,
commented “Staff wanted to do something out of the ordinary
and making a difference in the community is an important
consideration for the hundred plus workforce on the Thirlmere
Aqueduct project. We have varied backgrounds in construction
and considerable resource and capability at our disposal. So
what better than to do what we do best - build and repair”

Headmistress
Norah Mercer,
of Dean
Gibson Primary
School,
commented
“It would have
taken us at
least three
years to raise
a budget for
the work done.
The benefit to the children
is fantastic – they will all
remember this day for a long
time.”
Director of Civil Engineering Jon Bailey, of Daniel, commented
“Lots of potential projects were considered, but it was Dean
Gibson Primary School where we felt we could achieve the
most. Amongst the volunteers was one of my colleagues
Stephanie-Nolan Byrne, who has 2 children that attend the
school, so it was a real family affair. Not only did we provide real
benefit to the school but we had great fun doing it.

OMS completes pipe end measurement surveys for GRTgaz
Optical Metrology Services (OMS) Ltd has
successfully completed a series of pipe
measurement surveys for GRTgaz, France’s
largest natural gas operator.
GRTgaz is currently implementing the
Artere des Hauts de France II project, which
involves the installation of pipelines linking an
LNG terminal at Dunkerque to the existing
gas distribution network in France. As part
of the preparation for this project, OMS
conducted pipe measurement surveys in
two separate locations in France, Campagne
les Wardrecques and Arques. The objective
was to identify the proportion of pipes whose
out-of-roundness tolerance was greater than
6mm, which could later result in pipe fit up
delays and welding issues.
The surveys were carried out in three
mobilisations during November 2011 (450
pipe ends), February 2012 (900 pipe ends)
and April 2012 (108 pipe ends). Pipe end
dimensions measured included inside
diameter, outside diameter, wall thickness and
out-of-roundness tolerance.
For end dimensioning of pipes, OMS
utilised its automatic Pipe Checker™ laser
measurement tool, which is accurate to
0.05mm and enables two OMS staff to
measure a minimum of 200 pipe ends in
a single shift. This meant less time on site,
minimising project delays and costs for the
customer and reducing pipe fit up and
welding issues.
Dr Richard Gooch, Director of Technology at
OMS commented “The pipes were stacked
outside in sub-zero temperatures, which
presented our two inspectors with logistical
challenges. Prior to measurements being
taken, the pipe ends had to be cleared of
snow, ice, dust and debris, as temperatures
dropped as low as minus 15 degrees
Centigrade during the first two surveys. We
also had to use mobile access platforms
in order to provide our inspectors with safe
access and a stable working platform for
measuring the higher pipes in the stacks.”

Serimax signs new frame agreement with Technip
International welding company Serimax, a
subsidiary of the Vallourec Group, has been
awarded a three year frame agreement by
Technip’s UK operating centre to provide a
comprehensive service package at Technip’s
Evanton spoolbase, in Scotland. The scope
of work contains the Specialist Welding
Services, Pipe Management, Pipe Handling,
welding equipment, Pipe Inspection, Field
Joint Coating, Hydro Testing and general
Fabrication services carried out by Serimax.
The recently signed agreement also allows for
a further two year extension of work.
Located on the Cromarty Firth, the spoolbase
is one of five operated globally by Technip and
is used for the fabrication and spooling of rigid
pipe onto vessels with reel-lay capabilities.
Serimax will deploy its automatic welding
equipment which has been developed
in-house at the company’s research and
development department in Mitry Mory,
France, on a number of projects at the
spoolbase. Continued investment in
welding equipment is creating more efficient
processes, which generates significant
time savings. An example of this efficiency
was seen in a recent project undertaken for
Technip at the spoolbase which returned zero
failures from 4500 welds completed.
Les Dickson, regional manager for Serimax
Northern Europe, said “The company’s
continued investment in equipment and
welding processes R&D had played an
important part in winning the contract.
This agreement gives a strong indication of
Serimax’s commitment to offer a service that
is second to none in this industry.”
Dave Miller, General Manager, Technip’s
Evanton Spoolbase added “We are delighted
to continue our long standing relationship with
Serimax and this contract is testimony to our
confidence in the market. The North Sea is
still an exciting place to be with larger, more
complex projects being developed and we
look forward to working with Serimax to ‘take
it further’.”
Production output is forecast to increase
over the next number of years and 26 new
Serimax positions have already been created
at the Evanton spoolbase with further posts
expected to be filled as full production is
reached.
Serimax has been supporting Technip at the
Evanton Spoolbase for more than 15 years.
Can you afford the cost of repairing damaged assets?
What is your average cost to repair
damaged assets? This cost would reduce
significantly if your assets were recorded
on LinesearchbeforeUdig. Why? People
would know where your assets were before
commencing works, this would reduce third
party damages.
LinesearchbeforeUdig has over 100,000
enquiries per month. This means members
(asset owners) are assured that 100,000
enquirers know that assets may be where
they wish to work and they need to consider
this before starting. One member, Western
06
Power Distribution, has seen their enquiries
increase by 5,500 per month since July
2012.
Asset owners with disparate networks
often voice frustrations about the lack of
knowledge of those working near their
assets but at the same time, they struggle
to respond to hundreds or thousands of
enquiries per month. This takes time and
resource and 99% of enquiries are “Not
Affected”. Asset owners still need to go
through this administration burden however
and communicate back to enquirers. Joining

LinesearchbeforeUdig would solve this issue
by filtering enquiries against asset owners
registered areas of interest and only relevant
enquiries would be passed onto participating
asset owners. The result, no more time
wasting for users (waiting for responses)
and the asset owner’s administration burden
(in creating “Not Affected” responses) will
do down. Frustrations will stop as the
knowledge increases of those working near
assets.

High capacity trailers reduce costs and carbon footprints
Having taken delivery of 18 new high capacity
pipe coil trailers manufactured by Steve Vick
International, Wales & West Utilities (WWU)
report that they are already achieving the
anticipated 13% cost savings on PE pipe
usage after just six months.
cutting pipe wastage by 50% resulting in the
substantial reduction in their carbon footprint.
The 90/500 trailers, which WWU helped to
design, are the first of their type in the UK to
transport and dispense 500 metre coils of PE
with diameters from 63mm to 90mm.
What is more, the company are delighted to
find that use of the trailers is reducing their
carbon footprint by over 400 tonnes per
annum – enough carbon to drive a family
car two million miles! “Using Department of
Energy & Climate Change calculations, that
is equivalent to a financial carbon value of
around £22,000 a year. Over the ten-year life
of the trailers, that equates to over £220,000”,
says Chris Clarke, WWU’s Director of Asset
Management and HS&E.
The company was keen to reduce its pipe
wastage from a rate of 20% per year, which
is average for the industry. They decided
that using coils of PE much longer than the
traditional 120m coils would bring about
significant savings. Wastage of PE pipe,
particularly in the diameters 63mm, 75mm
and 90mm, is the result of unused sections of
pipe at the end of the coil being discarded as
they are not long enough for the next project.
Being able to use 500 metre coils has enabled
WWU to reduce pipe wastage from 20%
to 7%.
Chris goes on to explain that 20% of WWU’s
business operating carbon footprint is
made up of PE purchase. By using the new
high capacity trailers, the company is now
“We have seen savings on PE coming from
various aspects of using the high capacity
trailers. Not only are we wasting less because
of the more efficient use of PE over several
insertion projects, but also less time is required
in butt fusing lengths together for longer
pushes. And we are saving time and money
by digging less connection pits.”
Chris continues to talk about WWU’s
achievement in reducing PE wastage.
Success for Technip Junior Document Controllers
A group of six junior document controllers
from leading subsea engineering and
construction company Technip, are
celebrating after becoming the first students
from the company to successfully complete
a brand new Robert Gordon University (RGU)
short course.
The six employees – Jessica Leonard, Philip
Kyle, Emma Easton, Linda Easton, Rachel
Gilmour and Sandi Sleigh – were the first from
Technip to successfully complete the 50-hour
distance learning course and two of the
delegates, Philip Kyle and Sandi Sleigh, were
even promoted to document controller during
the process.
The Document Control Foundation short
course was developed for new entrants to the
Document Control function in the oil and gas
sector by RGU, in partnership with the Amor
Group and with support from members of
the Information Management Energy Forum.
It aims to address the skills gap and enable
students to gain understanding of the value
and practice of information management and
document control.
Delivered via online distance learning, the
students studied interactive web-based
learning materials with tutor support and
completed online assessment tests using the
university’s online learning environment.
Rosanna Buchan, UK lead document
controller at Technip, commented “I am
delighted for the delegates, they all worked
extremely hard, even meeting weekly to help
and mentor each other. I am certain that
this approach made a huge difference and
undoubtedly played a part in the pass success
rate. Distance learning can be a challenging
mode of study, one that requires a lot of
discipline and self motivation, so to see such a
high pass rate is commendable.”
Technip in the UK will now offer this course to
all new junior document controllers as part of
their ongoing staff development.
Dr Laura Muir, senior lecturer in the
Department of Information Management at
RGU added “The Document Control Course is
an ideal professional development opportunity
for people who work within this function.
When the course was launched we had a
very healthy response and the demand for
places shows that students and oil and gas
firms recognise the important role information
management and document control plays in
the industry.”

ATMOS upgrades the leak detection system for RRP
ATMOS International has recently upgraded
the ATMOS Pipe Leak Detection System
(LDS) at RRP (Rotterdam-Rijn Pijpleiding
Mij N.V., The Netherlands) after 12 years of
successful operation with the system. The
data scan rate is being increased and some
new requirements for LDS redundancy were
set. The system provides fully redundant leak
detection for 3 pipelines and now runs the
latest SMT version of ATMOS Pipe 5 which in
addition to leak detection has full redundancy
management and runs as a service. The
new version is fully compatible with all current
versions of Microsoft operating systems and
the latest versions of SQL.
RRP transports crude oil from Europoort in
Rotterdam, the Netherlands to four refineries
in Germany. The crude oil has a wide range
of viscosity and density properties from North
Sea light to Middle-Eastern heavy oil. ATMOS
Pipe works effectively with all the crude
oil types using its powerful statistical
analysis software.
The previous version of ATMOS Pipe was
installed in 1999 and has worked reliably
since then with the continuous support from
ATMOS International. ATMOS International
guarantees support of all the installed real-time
systems for their full lifetime and continues
to support the older systems if the customer
does not wish to upgrade. This minimises the
operational expenditure for the client
and means lower cost of ownership for
ATMOS Pipe.
Both the old system and the new system
were tested during the Site Acceptance Tests
after the upgrade at RRP and both systems
successfully detected all leaks. The detection
time of the new system was approximately
40% faster due to improvements in the
system and the faster scan rate. Even after

the need to access the lateral connection
from inside the main pipeline.
Commenting on the new cutter John

Skanska Host London Olympics Utilities
Presentation evening
Skanska Utilities utilised the new learning centre at Maple Cross to
host an evening of celebration and learning from across the industry
after the recent London Olympic Games. Some 40 attendees from
our supply chain, JV partners, clients and competitors were treated
to 3 presentations from leading industry professionals on the works
carried out by National Grid, Thames Water and the North London
Gas Alliance. The event was also hosted and poignantly introduced
by Skanska employee James Clarke who introduced Health and
Safety week at Skanska to the audience, the importance of an Injury
Free Environment (IFE) and told a humbling story about taking risks
simply because “it wouldn’t happen to me”.
Matt Dolan from the North London Gas Alliance opened proceedings
focusing on The Olympic route network mains replacement project,
key relationships with stakeholders and how critical communication
was to the success of delivery.
Second to present was Antony Rippon from Thames Water. Antony
introduced the key aims for Thames in delivering the infrastructure for
the new Park. He focused in on new and old assets, strengthening
the network and preparations for an increase in demand due to
spectator and visitors numbers to the capital.
The Headline speaker for the evening was Phil Clarke, Head of
London Operations for National Grid. Phil took the audience through
his deliverables for the games, the importance of resilience on
the network and the elements of safety and emergency response
National grid had put in to account for all scenarios.
Peter Jones, Managing Director for Skanska Utilities said “ We are
most pleased to have been able to host this event at our head office
in Maple Cross. Skanska UK was heavily involved in the construction
of the Olympic Park and peripheral projects, such as the Weymouth
Relief Road and it was most interesting to hear about the combined
efforts of our utility infrastructure providers and their essential
participation in making the games such a success. Of course,
Skanska Utilities are a major player in the utilities market and worked
alongside National Grid, through the North London Gas Alliance, in
reducing risk on the gas distribution network. ”
The overwhelming message to come out of the evening and the
questions fielded by the presenters was that communication and
collaboration during the games have highlighted a huge potential for
leaner and smarter working across the industry.
Northern Branch Dinner
The Northern Branch returned to the
Majestic Hotel in Harrogate for its 49th
Annual Dinner on 2nd November. The
dinner was well supported and the
generosity of sponsors and guests alike
ensured that a great evening was enjoyed
by all and that the chosen charity, United
Response benefited to the tune of £2,052.
In keeping with tradition the Chairman Tim
Farley and his guests were piped to their
seats before a silent auction for an oven
ready pig – or a bottle of Pigs Nose whisky
for those on a tighter budget! - kicked
off the fundraising. Following a traditional
dinner featuring Northern fayre of black
pudding and rhubarb thankfully served as
separate courses, guests were entertained

South East Branch Dinner
The South East branch dinner was the
held on Friday 28th September at the
Runnymede on Thames hotel, the first
dinner of the 2012-2013 season. For the
first time there was an informal event before
the dinner – at 5:30pm, Joseph Sanders
of Affinity Water reprised his winning Young
Professionals presentation from the 2011
competition, which made a really nice start
to the evening.
The dinner itself was enjoyed by more than
150 people. The charity being supported
this year was the White Lodge Centre, which
was one particularly close to the heart of SE
Branch Chairman, Sandra Rolfe-Dickinson.
The charity provides a range of flexible
and creative activities and opportunities for
disabled children, young people and adults,
for their families and for carers across Surrey
and the surrounding area. The evening
raised more than £2000 for the charity.
It was, however, somewhat ironic that the on
the day before the dinner, a 15” water main
burst right outside the headquarters of the
charity! This resulted in a road closure for
several days, and really highlighted to the
charity the importance of the work of the
Guild members.
Entertainment on the night was provided
by Noel Qualter, an excellent table magician
who impressed everyone with some very
skilful tricks, and scrap metal merchant
turned comedian, Sid Dennis, who provided
the after dinner speech.
Sandra
said “All
in all
it was
a very
enjoyable night. We now look forward
to our next event; a visit to the Brighton
& Hove Wastewater Treatment Works in
Peacehaven, which is taking place on
Thursday 29th November.”
Further future events in 2013 include a
debate on spray lining of water mains, and a
shared showcase event with IGEM. Please
