of a truly natural ingredient is one that has been extracted and processed without a harmful chemical
process. This produces a product that is truly safe, edible and food grade. The vast majority of natural

Parabens and/or Honeysuckle extract
Nitrosamine contaminants (MEA, DEA, TEA)
Parabens are known endocrine disrupters that
influence the hormonal system, can affect foetal
development, and are suspected to influence
breast cancer.
Nitrosamines have been identified as one
of the most potent classes of carcinogens,
having caused cancer in more than 40 different
animal species as well as in humans. NDELA
(nitrosodiethanolamine) is the specific nitrosamine
“to which human exposure is the greatest,” since
it occurs “in cosmetics” and is “absorbed readily
through the skin.” (Carcinogenesis 1985, National
Cancer Institute). Nitrosamines are created when
nitrosating agents are combined with amines.
Avoid these nitrosamine contaminating ingredients:
• MEA (Monoethanolamine),
• DEA (Diethanolamine),
• TEA (Triethanolamine),
e.g. Cocamide MEA, DEA Oleth-3 Phosphate,
TEA Lauryl Sulfate.
Plantservative, labelled as “Japanese
Honeysuckle Extract”, is a highly processed and
concentrated paraben extraction that may be
contaminated with synthetic parabens.
Avoid these paraben preservatives:
• methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl paraben.
Ethoxylated ingredients (..eth..)
Ethoxylation is a chemical process that generates
1,4-dioxane as a by-product and is “known to
the State of California to cause cancer” under
proposition 65.It is also a suspected kidney
toxicant, neurotoxicant, and respiratory toxicant
according to the California EPA.
Avoid these ethoxylated ingredients:
• ‘PEG’ or ‘polyethylene glycol’,
• ‘polyethylene’, ‘polyoxyethylene’, any ingredient
with ‘-eth-’ in the name (such as sodium
laureth sulphate), ‘oxynol’, ‘ceteareth’ or ‘oleth’.
Formaldehyde donating ingredients
Some ingredients release formaldehyde, which
is linked to cancer. The EPA classifies it as a
possible carcinogen.
Avoid these formaldehyde donating ingredients:
• Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate (Suttocide)
• Imidazolidinyl urea (Germall 115)
• Diazolidinyl urea (Germall II)
• Quaternium-15
• 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (Bronopol)
• DMDM Hydantoin (Glydant)
Synthetic Sunscreens
Chemical compounds in sunscreens can
accumulate in body fat and in breast milk. These
chemicals mimic oestrogen and can cause
hormonal changes within the body such as
increasing the size of the uterus.
Avoid these synthetic sunscreen chemicals:
• Benzophenones (dixoybenzone, oxybenzone)
• PABA and PABA esters (ethyl dihydroxy propyl
PAB, glyceryl PABA, p-aminobenzoic acid,
padimate-O or octyl dimethyl PABA)
• Cinnamates (cinoxate, ethylhexyl
p-methoxycinnamate, octocrylene, octyl
methoxycinnamate)
• Salicylates (ethylhexyl salicylate, homosalate,
octyl salicylate)
• Digalloyl trioleate
• Menthyl anthranilate
• Avobenzone [butyl-methyoxydibenzoylmethane;
