Unique Highlights
Tree Sculptures
A number of amazing tree sculptures
can be seen along our downtown streets,
depicting historical igures in intricate,
larger-than-life detail.
In 1999, the Truro Tree Committee began a
project designed to make the most of an unfortunate
situation – the loss of many of the Town’s stately elm
trees to Dutch Elm Disease. he overall theme is the
celebration of Truro’s heritage, with many of the sculptures honoring distinguished
individuals such as Sir Adams G. Archibald, Truro’s Father of Confederation.
hree artists have been involved with the project, each with their own unique and
identiiable style, but each sharing the uncanny ability to realistically reproduce
their chosen subjects, bringing them to life from the trunks of the dead elms
he three sculptors were: Albert Deveau of Edmundston, NB; Ralph Bigney of
Debert, NS and Bruce Wood of Truro, NS.
hese works of art help ill a void left by the loss of the trees from which they are
created and, at the same time, serve as a reminder to all of Truro’s rich heritage.
Tour guide brochures for the series of sculptures are available from the Truro
Welcome Centre.
Berlin Wall
A unique display featuring six sections of the Berlin Wall is located on Prince
Street in the heart of our downtown. hey were obtained from Berlin - Treptow
by a local resident and presented to the Town of Truro with the hope they will
encourage a continuing advancement towards world peace.

Our History
Truro is positioned on tidal lowlands that provided seasonal food and shelter to Mi’kmaq
and upon which the Acadians had founded a small community before their expulsion
from Nova Scotia in 1755. Both groups referred to the area around the Minas Basin as the
Cobequid. he present settlement began in 1761 when Presbyterian families from New
England sailed up the Salmon River to take possession of the 50,000-acre Truro Township,
granted to them by the British Government. he early community grew slowly, but the
relocation of the Court House in 1803 solidiied Truro’s position as the legal, administrative
and mercantile centre of Colchester district.
Even in 1838, the majority of the township’s 1500 inhabitants were Presbyterians employed
in farming or agricultural crafts. Occupational, religious, ethnic and racial diversity came
with the building of the Nova Scotian Railway in 1858 and its extension, both east and west,
as the Inter-colonial Railway in the 1870’s. he new population required houses near the
railway, enlarging the village, so that the name Truro came to be applied to this built up area.
In 1875, with a population of 3000, the village was incorporated as a town. At that time, it
already had an active Fire Brigade; the irst kerosene oil had been developed from DebertBelmont coal; a water system was introduced and shortly afterward, the irst ribbed-knit
underwear was being manufactured (Stanields); the irst condensed milk factory in Canada
opened; the irst railway workers union was organized; and the irst school of agriculture
in Atlantic Canada opened in 1885. By 1888, Truro had the irst long-distance telephone
terminus in Nova Scotia and the irst incandescent lighting in homes and oices.
Truro was nicknamed “he Hub of Nova Scotia” more than 100 years ago when railways
linking Nova Scotia met here. As road transportation achieved importance, it also became
the hub of provincial highway networks.
Today, with a population of about 12,000, Truro is an important centre of transportation,
manufacturing, agriculture, trade and education. Its central location even has a direct bearing
on it’s climate. Being just ifteen miles north of the halfway point between the Equator and
the North Pole, Truro escapes the extremes in temperature and weather conditions often
experienced in other areas.
he Colchester Historical Museum on Young Street houses artifacts, documents, pictures
and special displays featuring highlights from this area’s past, together with a variety of
temporary and travelling exhibits.

Victoria Park Trails
Victoria Park boasts a trail network nearly 20 km in length, providing a popular site for
walking, hiking, jogging, cross country skiing and cycling. he Hemlock Trail is a .7 km
route beginning at a stairway in the lower park near Adam Street. he paths meander
through 200 year old eastern hemlock stands. he 200m Lepper Brook Walk is a relatively
lat trail that begins in the lower park and winds alongside the brook under the cover of
softwood. he Mountain Walk is a .5 km path cut into the steep hillside of the gorge
overlooking the Lepper Brook. he Dr. Jim Vibert Trail is a 1.6 km loop through the upland
area beyond the gorge.
he lookof at the top of Wood Street ofers a spectacular view of the valleys of the Salmon
and North Rivers, which meet and low into the world famous Bay of Fundy. On a clear day,
the views extend down the bay to Five Islands, a distance of about 60 kilometers.
he walking trails follow the natural contours of this magniicent setting, allowing for close
up views of the park’s two waterfalls, the brook and steep gorges. At Jacob’s Ladder, one
can climb 173 steps or 180 feet - a challenge that is well worth the efort. Joe Howe Falls is
one of the most photographed spots in town. Still further along are Waddell Falls and the
Cathedral Dell with a pagoda and picnic tables. In a shady glen, there is a replica of the Holy
Well, an Acadian baptismal site in the 17th and 18th centuries.
he Cobequid Trail
he Cobequid Trail is a cooperative efort of the Town of Truro, County of Colchester and
the Village of Bible Hill to create a unique recreational opportunity focusing on a diversity
of landscapes and scenery.
he Trail is composed of four distinct sections. he D.A.R. Trail (Dominion Atlantic
Railway) follows the abandoned railway line from Downtown Truro to Lower Truro. From
the east end, it begins at King Street near the Nova Scotia Community College, passes by the
Truro Golf Course and ultimately joins the Marshlands section. It is approximately 3.5 km
in length and ofers an easy crushed gravel surface.
he Marshlands Section begins at the gateway trailhead in Lower Truro and ends at the
Cobequid Bay Look-of from which the famous tidal bore can be viewed. It covers
approximately 3 km with a varied surface of crushed gravel, grass and asphalt.
he Eagle Crest Walk in Bible Hill begins at Warren Drive of College Road. his 1.1 km
section with crushed gravel surface passes through maple stands and hemlock ravines and
ofers scenic views overlooking the Salmon River. he Trail continues via sidewalks and short
trail sections across College and Pictou Roads to connect to the Farnham Brook Trail, which
crosses the brook several times via wooden bridges and continues through forested areas for
about 1.4 km with a crushed gravel and grass surface.

Tidal Bore
Truro boasts an amazing natural phenomenon seen in very few parts of the world - the Tidal
Bore. In fact, the town was originally called Cobequid by the Mi’kmaq, which means “place
of the rushing water.”
he Bay of Fundy is particularly noted for having the highest tides in the world. Twice daily, a
wave of water rushes from the Minas Basin to ill the channel of the Salmon River in a matter
of minutes.
As the tide passes toward the head of the bay, it is in efect squeezed by the ever-narrowing
sides and by the constant shallowing of the bottom. As it reaches the very head of the bay, the
advancing tide becomes a wave varying from just a ripple to several feet in height, and this
wave, called a “tidal bore”, continues up the rivers which empty into the bay. hus, we have
the phenomenon of a river changing its low before your very eyes, as the bore rushes in over
the outgoing river water.
he height of the tidal bore increases with the range of the tide, which in turn, varies with the
phases of the moon. he best time to view
the tidal bore is during a full moon or a new
moon. Equally interesting as the wave itself
is the time it takes for the river to ill to high
tide - just over one hour from the arrival of the
tidal bore, as compared to the conventional six
hours to reach high tide along coastal waters.
his amazing wonder of nature can easily be seen from a designated viewing area in Truro
near the 102 Highway, where there is also a small Interpretive Centre. Check with the Truro
Welcome Centre for tide times and directions.
For an exciting day trip, ask about the various white water rafting tours available on the
Shubenacadie River. Exhilarating upriver excursions take you over the tidal bore, a deinite
memory maker!

A Proud Heritage
he people of Truro take great pride in the preservation of the Town’s historic buildings. In
fact, three Heritage Districts have been designated in the Downtown core.
he impressive Second Empire style Normal School, opened in 1877 for the education
of teachers, still stands proudly in the heart of town as a provincially registered Heritage
Property. A science building erected in 1900 for the Normal School now houses the
Colchester Historical Museum and Archives.
he building at right is a National Historic site. Built
in1884, it housed the Town Post Oice until 1961 when
it became home to the Truro Police Department. Today, it
continues its impressive stature in our downtown as home
to the Town’s Civic oices.
Truro has a total of 55 Municipally Registered Heritage
Properties, four Provincially Registered Heritage properties
(two of which are public buildings – the Normal College and First United Church), as well
as the National Historic site mentioned above.
Many residences, civic buildings and churches display the charm of a bygone era, with dozens
of examples of Queen Anne, Greek and Gothic Revival, New England Colonial, Italianate
and Georgian styles, among others.
Self-guided historical walking tour brochures, available from the Truro Welcome Centre and
the Colchester Historical Museum, lead Victorian architecture enthusiasts on an intriguing
journey through a charming and impressive built heritage.

Victoria Park
Victoria Park is a spectacular natural treasure and a nature lover’s paradise. Its 1,000
acres of scenic attractions make it one of the most beautiful parks in Eastern Canada.
Situated in the heart of Truro’s urban area, it ofers an amazing natural retreat one would
never expect to ind in the midst of a bustling town. Walkers, joggers, bird watchers,
photographers and cross-country skiers all enjoy its special features.
Entering the park of Brunswick Street, one is instantly removed from the busy streets
and presented with a huge expanse of open, grassy land dotted with trees and lower beds
and intersected by a winding brook. Here, the visitor is quickly faced with a decision: to stay
in the open area and enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch, soak up the sun, take the children to the
playground, or enjoy a swim in the outdoor pool, or to leave this area for the wooded trails
where the scenery really begins. (See page 8 for more details).
In the midst of all this natural beauty is a new recreational gem. he Park Pool recently
received a major facelift through a grassroots project led by a team of volunteers who
orchestrated a two-year fundraising campaign. With tremendous community support
in the form of donations of funds, labor and materials, this pool has become a prized
addition to the town. As one of the largest outdoor swimming pools east of
Montreal, it ofers an amazing range of features: a kiddie pool, beach entry with a
gradual slope ideal for wheelchairs and seniors; a metre-deep section with underwater
benches; double-lume speed slide; one metre diving board; and a regulation size junior
Olympic section with six lanes allowing for swim meets. Plenty of seating in both sun
and shade, plus poolside grassy areas for picnics or relaxing, add to the atmosphere.
he park is also home to game ields, a band shell where entertainment is provided
during the summer months, and the Truro Tennis Club.
