Healthcare is changing. With healthcare reform, medical records must move to an electronic format, which has
created an incredible need for administrative professionals trained on electronic health record (EHR) software.
Medical administrative assistants with EHR skills are the specialized administrative personnel increasingly in
demand to keep the modern medical office running smoothly.
Specific responsibilities vary from location to location, but may include:
• Creating and updating patients’ electronic health records
• Managing the day-to-day operations of a medical facility
• Scheduling and coordinating appointments
• Verifying patient insurance
• Completing and submitting insurance claims
• Preparing correspondence between medical providers and their patients
• Providing quality customer service to patients

This course includes Medical Transcription and Editor. It has 23 course modules and is designed to help students
gain the knowledge and skills of medical transcriptionists and medical transcription editors. Numerous exercises
and assessments throughout each module ensure that students master each concept before moving on.
The Editor program includes Medical Transcription training plus additional information which trains you to edit
records generated by “voice recognition software.” Doctors frequently dictate their notes, and then turn the
dictation over to software to create the official written record. Unless the doctor speaks slowly and distinctly,
with no accent, the software misinterprets many words. As a result, a new specialty has developed among
medical transcriptionists called the medical transcription editor.
Knowledgeable student support advisers are available to help you complete the program from start to finish. Take
up to one full year to complete.

Medical coding and billing professionals translate medical records into standardized codes used to bill patients
and third-party payers such as insurance companies and Medicare. Coders use 3 different code sets: CPT,
HCPCS, and ICD-9/10. All healthcare organizations will be transitioning to the ICD-10 code set. However, to earn
industry certifications and start your career before the transition, you will need to be familiar with the ICD-9
code set.
The comprehensive Professional Medical Coding and Billing program will teach all three codes—CPT, HCPCS, and
ICD-9—making sure students have the skills needed to earn national certification and start working.
The change to ICD-10 affects training organizations as well as the industry associations/certifying organizations
(AHIMA and AAPC). AHIMA and AAPC have recommended that all students be training in ICD-9 as well as ICD10. So going forward, all students will be enrolled in ICD-9 and be given a free ICD-10 FastTrack at the
completion of their original course. The only cost associated with the ICD-10 FastTrack is shipping for the books.
For those students who have already trained or are in the middle of their ICD-10 course, they will be given a
complimentary enrollment for the ICD-9 Bridge—again only paying for shipping on the books. The goal is to be
sure students are prepared for the current set of codes. That is why Career Step is training in both ICD-9 and
ICD-10, but students are only paying for one of the two courses needed.
