The Monthly Newsletter of the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association
April 2015
The President’s Letter
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
By the time the Hillsider reaches your doorstep, I really hope that
spring has arrived. It’s been a tough winter but I’ve definitely spotted
a flower or two blooming!
This month’s letter will be brief in order to make room for the
announcements about the all the exciting things happening in our
community in April. To that end, I will focus on only two topics.
First on the list is a non-profit 501c organization called the “Inner
Harbor Project” that presented to FHNA at our general membership
meeting in March. This local organization, founded 3 years ago by
lifelong Baltimore resident Celia Nuedstadt, identifies and trains
teens that are leaders among their peers to promote safety in public
spaces. Two members of the Inner Harbor’s “Peace Ambassador
Program “ presented a compelling overview of the way youth leaders
prevent crime by patrolling hotspots and intervening in a positive
way when conflict arises. Last summer, the Peace Ambassador
Program reduced juvenile arrests in the Inner Harbor and downtown
Baltimore by 86%. (See page 10 for more information.) Federal Hill
has the opportunity to bring a dedicated Peace Ambassador to our
neighborhood but we need your help in raising funds that go directly
towards paying the youth leader for their training and hard work. If
would like more information about the Inner Harbor project, please
check out their website http://theinnerharborproject.org. Remember,
as the weather warms and there is increased after school and late
afternoon activity around the harbor and in the neighborhoods,
we move into into prime time for tension and skirmishes. Please
consider donating to fund our Federal Hill Peace Ambassador by
simply clicking on https://givlet.org/donate/WGMe. Any amount,
large or small is greatly appreciated!
APRIL DATES
TO REMEMBER
Second on the list are FHNA’s May elections. We have officer seats
up for reelection and we also have vacant at large positions that we
would like very much to fill. In addition, our invaluable beautification
and technology committee chairs are resigning in May, so we have
big shoes to fill on those committees. If you would like to find out
more, please consider joining us at our board meeting at 1011 Light
Street on April 8th at 7PM to meet the board and consider how you
might be able to become more involved in the community.

Peggi’s Picks
By Peggi Powell
My pick for the “Heart of the Hood” is The Cross Street Market. I
don’t believe there are many people in the hood who haven’t visited
the Market to pick up some item, grab a quick bite to eat, or watch a
Ravens or Orioles game with fellow fans. Wander with me through
our market from Light Street to Charles Street.
Steve’s Lunch: Great sandwiches and the infamous HUGE boxes of
Utz potato chips. I remember when you could get a gold can filled
with chips that you could return for a refill.
Mondawmin Chicken: Hidden in the corner is a find for fried and
rotisserie chicken. It offers many other goodies, but my favorite is the
chicken. Better than Royal Farms!
Fenwick’s Choice Meats: Henry Reisinger has owned this business
for 30 years, and he knows more about meat than anyone I know.
Be sure to ask him about the special pigs who eat only acorns and
produce delicious prosciutto. (He has many of these tidbits to share.)
Here you can get personal service, and you can have your meat cut to
order. Henry will even give you suggestions on how to prepare your
dish.

more, visit Anna Epsilantis, where the “elite meet.” Anna is your best
source of information about everything happening in the Hood. On
the 3rd Thursday of each month, wine or beer and cheese tastings
kick off 3rd Thursday visits to the galleries, shops, and boutiques that
offer discounts. And then you can enjoy a 10-percent discount for
dinner at participating restaurants. If you visit on Fridays at Happy
Hour time, you might even spot the official Mayor of Federal Hill,
our own Ed Oliver.
Cheese Galore and More: Proprietress Extraordinaire, Sharon
Johnson, presides over her domain of cheeses, olive oils, and unusual
gifts. She also sells the very addictive Federal Hill “crack,” which you
won’t be able to stop eating. Sharon adds new items almost daily, it
seems. Her store has become a very welcome addition to the market.
She combines both food and gifts, making Cheese Galore and More
a wonderful example of entrepreneurship at its finest. Hopefully, we
will see more stalls like this in the market redux.
The Flower Shop: Has many beautiful bouquets and wonderful
plants and gifts for all occasions. I would speculate that many of us
have picked up a mixed bouquet as a last minute present for a hostess
or perhaps for a new friend.
Mama’s One Stop Bakery: For all your bakery needs. From
homemade cookies and customized cakes to those incredible Berger
cookies, you can find it all here.
Wireless One: I’ll bet you didn’t realize that you can get cell phones
and cell phone cases and sign up for phone plans right here in the
market. Who knew?
Big Jim’s Deli: For the best overstuffed sandwiches and much, much
Baltimore’s Best BBQ: This seems to focus mainly on Chinese

items, which is an interesting twist on barbecue.
the counter will guide you.
Mr. Sausage: It’s smaller now, but still has the same menu of
sausages and dogs with all the trimmings, which are great to take to a
ball game. Yes, you can carry them in in plastic bags. With the prices
here, you might be able to buy a beer in the stadium to go with your
Mr. Sausage.
Bruce Lee’s Wings: If you have never had a Bruce Lee wing, shame
on you! His special recipe takes the wing to a new level. Bruce also
prepares hamburgers that are big and juicy, custom made by Bruce
himself. My mouth is watering as I write.
The Sweet Shoppe Hand-dipped Hershey’s ice cream, boxed
chocolates, all things sweet.
Rosie’s Posies: Flowers and so much more. Great place to get Orioles
and Ravens t-shirts, and be sure to check out the Teddy bears.
Kwon’s Produce: The place to go for all things veggie. Kwon’s
“mixed fruit” lets you avoid all that cutting and chopping.
Pop Tacos: These are awesome tacos. Filled to the brim with all
things good. Eat them there or take them out.
Lottery and Tobacco Shop: Take a chance and maybe you’ll be the
next Maryland millionaire.
Nunnally Brothers Meats: Since 1954, selling meats and produce.
Get whole or half chickens or pounds of chicken. They will cut it all
for you and package it. So if you have a freezer big enough, this is
the place to go.
Cross Street Seafood: All things fishy and fresh. Those big eyes
staring at you, just waiting to be selected for your next meal. Which
one to choose? So many decisions. The very helpful people behind
The Pretzel Twist: What wonderful combinations of pretzels are
here. It truly is a “twist” on a typical pretzel. Try a warm cinnamon
pretzel as a breakfast alternative. YUM, YUM!
NICK’s Oyster Bar: Well, this is the happening place, especially
on Friday nights! Included in the NICK’s area are Oishii Teriyaki
and Samuri Sushi. Here you can order shrimp steamed on sight, get
a hard shell crab, and order a shrimp salad made on premises. And,
of course, there are the OYSTERS! On the half shell or fried. You
can marvel at the skill of the shuckers as you await your order. How
do they do that so fast? Don’t try this yourself unless you get some
instructions and haven’t had a few beers.
The Market attracts a great crowd, from suit people to locals in jeans
and whatever else is in at the moment. Quite a place to watch a
Ravens or Orioles game when the beer is flowing and the cheers are
loud and spirited. Truly a “heart of the hood” experience.
Hope you get a chance to do your own stroll through the Market.
Maybe you’ll find some places I’ve missed. In the meantime,
ENJOY!

The Hill Street News – April 2015
By Jane Wehrle
Federal Hill residents have strong ideas about our beloved
neighborhood. We feel passionately about its many positive
features and sometimes about challenges we’d like to address. I
had fun this month checking in with folks who live outside Federal
Hill to find out what they think about our area and why they find
themselves visiting it so often. I think you’ll enjoy their answers.
Jeff Trueman: Lives in Fell’s Prospect near Patterson Park and
Holy Rosary Church. “I come to FH to go to Metropolitan Café. I
love its natural lighting and the great beer selection.”
Connie Sanfilippo: Lives in the Chatham section of Howard Co.
“I LOVE the shops in quaint area of FH. It reminds me of a mini
New York or even Sicily, Italy.”
Kelly Stith: Lives in Mt. Vernon. “I spend most of my time in FH
at the Pub Dog. I love the staff and the people that end up coming
in. I especially love those that come in from out of town. They’re
always interesting people.”
Michael Mellett: Lives in Hollins Roundhouse area with wife,
Kathy. “Sam’s Bagels brings me to FH regularly. I drive over
from Hollins Roundhouse at least once a week, it seems. We buy
an ‘Everything Bagel BLT’ for Kathy, and I get a ‘Double Toasted
Old Bay’ with cream cheese. We really need to stop!”
Eliza Adams: Lives in Mt. Vernon. “I like that FH has a good
mix of art galleries, fun little boutiques, and excellent new bars
like the ‘Bookmakers Cocktail Club.’ FH has something to please
everyone, no matter what your taste is.”
Jackie Scott: Lives in Severn, near the airport. “One thing I like
about FH is its location—easy access (via 95, 295, or Rt. 2),
especially for those of us who live south of Baltimore (like Anne
Arundel Co.). FH is much more accessible than areas like Fell’s
Point or Mt. Vernon.”
Ericka Morgan: Lives in northeast Baltimore. “I enjoy the variety
of shops and eateries in FH. I especially enjoy Midnite Confections
Cupcakery on Charles St. near The Cross Street Market.”
Wendy Gibson: Lives in Sparks. “I have so many amazing
memories of being on top of the hill on the cannons with my dad
when I was little, and then later taking my kids to the playground
so they could see the wonderful view of my city. I love getting
up early on Saturday or Sunday and leaving my neighborhood
in Sparks to run across FH sidewalks just as the neighborhood is
waking up. I love walking through the streets on a Thursday night
to my book club and hearing an old, dear friend yell my name
from a restaurant window.”

Robert Herman: Lives in Annapolis. “I am a history buff, so FH,
especially THE Hill, means heritage and history to me. When I
walk in that park and look out across the city scape, I feel the
rich past of our city and the state and get a sense of how lucky
we are to have so much of it preserved right here. I also love
being so near to Ft. McHenry as I look out across the water.”
in Federal Hill. It’s often an embarrassment of choices.”
Debbie Streeter: Lives in Street, in northern Harford Co. “I
love going to Shofer’s Furniture. I got a number of pieces there,
including a desk and a bedroom set. I love the friendliness of the
neighborhood.”
Flo Kennedy-Stack: Lives in Catonsville. “For many years my husband,
Paul, and I have enjoyed visiting FH from Catonsville. Current visits
with friends always bring fond memories of FH in the 1970s, when I
loved to drop by the Montgomery St. house of our dear family friend,
Jane Sprenger. The complex restoration of this house’s elegance was
only one of many conservation efforts immediately adjacent to The
Hill and just one or two blocks west and south, by a group of creative
Baltimoreans willing to invest in their city. Through Jane, we became
acquainted with several other FH ‘pioneers,’ including Robert “Bob”
Baker, George Kline, Larry Mullens, and Wally Wallace. It was heady
times for these visionaries, who helped others to see the potential that
a revitalized Inner Harbor could have for Baltimore’s future.”
Patrick Harnett: Lives in Hollins Market area. “FH is a
wonderful neighborhood to wander about and get lost in. I love
the red brick buildings, quaint pubs, and lovely stores. The area
around Cross Street Market is a hive of activity. A wonderful
area to have a nice cold beer on a hot summer’s day.”
Misty Sexton: Lives in Ellicott City. “I love coming to FH. I am
there regularly for rehearsal for Bach in Baltimore. It’s a great
place for a day in the city with good food, great beer (required!),
and neat shops. Also, the summer Blues and Jazz Festival is a
must!”
Nicole Lacroix: Lives in DC’s Southwest Waterfront
neighborhood. “There’s always something interesting happening
Phyllis Smith: Visits from Columbia, South Carolina. “I love the fact
that when in FH a walk in some directions leads to stores and fine
places to eat while a walk in another leads to a beautiful green space
in Federal Hill Park.”
Now, Paul and I visit friends who are “newer” Federal Hill residents.
As we stroll through the neighborhood for many blocks from The
Hill and enjoy the wide array of excellent pubs and restaurants, we
recall those who laid the foundation for this modern community that
welcomes new residents and draws visitors from all over the greater
Baltimore region.

400 Block of Grindall St. Spotless After Visit by Kerry Broersma’s
DHHS Ninth-Graders
By Ginny Gerhart
When you were in ninth grade how likely
was it that you would willingly get up
early on a Saturday morning and travel
up to seven miles to clean up trash and
leaves from a street near your school?
Especially a street that’s a wind tunnel
for leaves.
On Saturday, March 21, Digital Harbor
High School’s ninth-grade teacher Kerry
Broersma brought nine of her students to
the 400 block of Grindall St., and clean
up the street they did.
Working along with eight residents, from
10 am to 12:30 pm, Kerry and her kids
raked leaves, swept trash and gravel,
pulled weeds, and deposited everything
into some 30 large plastic bags. Gravel
was raked into an obstacle course of
potholes. Kerry and a couple of her
students even cleaned the leaves off the
steps that lead from lower Grindall to
Federal Hill Park.
The cleanup, which Kerry, an English
teacher, arranged with Jon Klapper,
longtime street resident, was a
fundraising effort to help her reach her
goal of raising $3,634 to buy Kindles
for her classroom. Her students attend a
technology high school, and she believes
it’s important to give them a technology
experience. Several residents made
cash donations on the spot. Everyone
involved was treated to lunch at Barb
Ruble’s house, provided by Barb and
Tisha Travaglini.
The dedication of Kerry’s students is
demonstrated by how often they’ve
gone out on the streets of Federal Hill
this past fall and winter to clean up
trash. Her students are unhappy with the

reputation DHHS has in the neighborhood as a result
of some of its students who walk through it to and
from school leaving litter in their wake. Which is
why these ninth graders have worked so hard to pick
up all the debris where they clean, not just the trash
tossed by littering students.
On Saturday, a number of the students traveled
some distance to participate. Cearra and Devonte,
for instance, both live in Park Heights and have
to take public transportation to and from school.
Because they have to transfer buses, the trip, which
is supposed to take an hour or less, takes two hours
each way.

Michelle Li, Mike Lors, Doug Hill, Brandon Rowe,

Update: The good news is that Kerry has reached her

Donations Needed to Bring Student Peace Ambassadors to Federal Hill
They Reduced Juvenile Arrests by 86% Last Summer
By Celia Neustadt, Inner Harbor Project
Please help us raise $4000 to sponsor a Peace Ambassador
for the Federal Hill neighborhood. The Peace Ambassador
Program is one of the Inner Harbor Project’s five programs
to create safe public spaces. Youth leaders prevent crime
by spreading positivity among their peers and decreasing
tension between teens and authority figures. Last summer,
the Peace Ambassador Program reduced juvenile arrests in
the Inner Harbor and downtown by 86 percent.

The Wizard Has His Joke
By John Ginovsky
For some crazy reason I decided to play an April Fool’s Day prank on my neighbor, the Wizard
Awry.
Crazy, I know, but spring had come, the weather was nice, and it was time to do something crazy
after being stuck inside all winter. So that morning I walked up to his door and banged on it
most urgently.
“Mr. Wizard! Mr. Wizard! Come out quick!” I yelled.
The door flew open and the Wizard Awry glared down at me, staff in hand and conical, starstudded wizard hat on his head.
“What is the meaning of this?” he boomed.
“Come quick!” I said breathlessly. “A tree limb has fallen on your car! It’s all smashed in!”
His face paled. I knew he really loved that car, with its 47 lights, bat-wing tail fins, and radio
antenna shaped like a lightning bolt.
Just like that he rushed past me and out to the curb—only to find there was nothing wrong with
his car.
“April fool!” I shouted, laughing nervously. I was beginning to think this wasn’t such a good
idea. He turned and I expected to be transformed into a frog right there. But after a long pause,
his features softened and a slight grin lit his face.
“Oh, ho! A jest! A good one! Yes, you really had me going, as they say,” he said, walking back
to his door and slamming it shut without another look at me.
As the day progressed I got to thinking that the wizard had taken my prank a little too well. I
knew how these things went and I prepared myself for anything out of the ordinary to come.
And I was not wrong.

A little while later I got a call: “Hello! This is Mr. Jones from the human resources department
of the firm where you recently interviewed. I just wanted to tell you: You got the job!
Congratulations!”
I wasn’t buying it. “Yeah, sure, Mr. Jones, if that’s your real name.” I hung up.
Around noon I went out to the curb to retrieve my garbage can. There, on the sidewalk, lay a
crisp $100 bill. I just walked by.
“I’m on to you,” I said out loud. “What’s going to happen? As soon as I pick it up it’s going to
explode in my face, right? Forget it!”
As the afternoon edged into evening a neighbor lady rang my doorbell.

“I hope you can help me,” she said. “Well, not me, but my niece. Her car won’t start.”
Behind her I could see an extremely attractive young lady smiling by her car out front, giving
me a little wave.
“She just needs a jump start. Can you help us?” the neighbor lady asked, adding: “You ought to
know…She’s an NFL cheerleader.”

I wasn’t falling for any of that.
“Sorry, I wasn’t born yesterday,” I said, rudely closing
the door.
A few hours later, as I was eating supper, there came a
rapping at my door. It was the Wizard Awry.
“Well, young man, I just wanted you to know I harbor
no hard feelings about your little jest at my expense
this morning,” he said.
I guess I smirked a bit. “It was all in fun,” I replied.
“Well, then, let’s shake and let bygones be bygones,”
he said, smiling and holding out his hand.
I smiled too and grasped his hand—and felt a huge
electric shock go right through me.
“April fool!” the wizard cried, laughing.

But then there came another shock.
“Wait…That’s your prank?” I asked.

I can not imagine not being with my kids (students). I am totally commiBed to this school, the community, the families. Here at FHPS everybody is valued for who they are and not for where they come from.” Gretchen Tarleton (known as Miss T.) “This is my 8th year at FHPS. I really enjoy working here, I especially like the size of the school. We get to know all the kids, not only the ones in 4th grade and this is something great. We have lot of different kids with different backgrounds, but they are all geMng along and this is my favorite part. “ Colleen Campion Pennies for Pillows by Maggie Malone & Tyon Robinson FHP 4th grade students collected pennies to buy new pillows for Christ Lutheran Church Women's And Children Emergency Shelter, Baltimore, MD. “Pillows cannot be washed, and having your own pillow when you are at a shelter is something special,” said Maggie. “I don’t like to share my pillow, except if it is for a sleepover.” They collected money every day for about 2 weeks. “We knew each pillow was $5, so we were trying to have enough money so everybody at the shelter could receive a new pillow,” said Maggie. “We got enough money to buy 40 pillows. Reading to younger grades Recycling Tayon Johnson (11) & Kayla Wilken (5) Our 4th graders go visit younger grades (pre-‐K and K) and read them stories every Wednesday. They also show them how to play some reading and math games on the computers. Fourth graders just love reading to pre-‐k and K students. They can model a good reading behavior. For the 4th grade students that are still reading with dif\iculty, this is a great exercise. It builds their own con\idence, they feel empowered and it makes them want to read even more. As for the youngers ones, they just love this one on one attention and look forward to seeing the 4th graders every week. Our 4th graders did a research project about recycling and made posters to explain what can be recycled and how to recycle. They then went into the other grades to teach them how to recycle every day at the school. Fourth grade students go around the school every Wednesday to collect recycling from every classroom. “It is very easy to do it and everybody can do it if they put their mind to it,” said Tayon Johnson (11). Then he added: “I like recycling because I like to help the world and make it a better place.” With Miss Campion, 4th grade teacher, students do science every day. Panorea Mastoras (9) said, “We learned about hydraulics and pneumatics.” Koree Gwynn (9) said, “I liked learning about laws of motion and what kind of actions and motions we need to ride a bike.” Ashton Mayeux (10) said, “What we do in Judo-‐bots is make a robot with a group of student to \ight other Judo-‐bots from other groups.” www.FederalHillPrep.com April 2015

Cheese Galore and More ~ JDRF* Recipe Fundraiser Contest
Winner Entry by: Colleen Morris
Recipe Name: Goat cheesecake with pistachio crumb
crust
Ingredients:
For the pistachio crust:
1 heaping cup shelled, roasted, and salted pistachios (see Recipe
Notes)
1/4 cup granulated sugar
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
For the filling:
1 (11-ounce) Cherry Glen goat cheese, room temperature
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup (4 ounces) crème fraîche
2 tablespoons good-quality honey
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Pinch of fine sea salt
3 large eggs
For the Meyer lemon cream:
1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
2 large egg yolks
2 teaspoons Meyer lemon zest
1/2 cup Meyer lemon juice, from 3 to 4 lemons (see Recipe
Notes)
1/4 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or pure vanilla extract
Pinch of kosher salt
For the candied pistachios:
1/2 cup shelled, roasted, and salted pistachios, finely chopped
2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon hot water
pan on a sheet pan and bake for 18 to 20 minutes, until cheesecakes
are just barely set. Remove from the oven and allow to cool to
room temperature. Transfer the pan to the refrigerator and chill the
cheesecakes for a minimum of 4 hours.
For the Meyer lemon cream, cream the butter and sugar with an
electric mixer in a medium mixing bowl until light and fluffy, about
2 minutes. Slowly add the eggs and yolks and beat for 1 minute, until
well combined. Add the lemon zest, lemon juice, vanilla, and salt and
continue mixing until incorporated. (The mixture will become curdled
and lumpy upon adding the lemon juice, but it will smooth quickly
upon heating.)
Transfer the mixture to a medium saucepan and cook over mediumlow heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture reaches 165° F on an
instant-read thermometer; the mixture should be just thick enough to
coat the back of the spoon. Transfer to another bowl and press plastic
directly on the surface. Let cool at room temperature until ready to
serve. (Lemon cream will keep in the refrigerator for 1 week. The
texture thickens as it chills; you can whisk a tablespoon or two of
heavy cream to thin if needed.)
For the candied pistachios, spread chopped pistachios on a baking
sheet lined with a Silpat or sheet of parchment paper. Whisk the brown
sugar and hot water to dissolve. Pour the mixture over the pistachios
and toss to combine. Bake in a 350° F oven until golden and toasted, 8
to 10 minutes. Once cool, crumble the pistachios for serving.
To assemble, remove the cheesecakes from the pan and remove metal
rounds from the bottom. Bring to room temperature before serving.
Drizzle with Meyer lemon cream and a sprinkle of candied pistachios.
*Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
For the pistachio crust, combine pistachios and sugar in food
processor or mini chopper and process until it becomes a fine
meal. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and stir in the melted butter;
the mixture should resemble wet sand. Divide the dough evenly
among 12 wells of an mini cheesecake pan (or a mini muffin pan
filled with cupcake liners) and press firmly into the bottom.
Preheat the oven to 400° F. While the oven is heating, refrigerate
the crusts until chilled. Bake the crusts for 10 to 12 minutes until
set. Cool completely before filling.
For the filling, lower oven temperature to 300° F. Combine the
goat cheese and sugar in the bowl of a food processor and process
for 1 minute. Add the crème fraîche, honey, vanilla, and salt and
process for another 30 seconds. Scrape down the sides of the bowl
if needed. With the food processor running, add the eggs through
the feeding tube one at a time, and mix until just combined; do not
over mix. (If you do not have a food processor you can whisk the
ingredients by hand in the same order.)
Transfer the filling to a measuring cup with a pour spout and fill
each cheesecake well almost to the top. Place the cheesecake

Adorable AARFies of the Month—Stevie Nicks & Kate Moss
Stevie Nicks
Hi there, I’m Stevie Nicks and I’m looking to make sweet music with a forever
family. Could that family be yours? I’m what is affectionately known as a “pocket
pittie”—I only weigh 29 pounds at 11 months old. I love other dogs (maybe I could
be your dog’s new sister?) and have so far been uninterested in cats. I would be
happiest in a home with another dog. Could that be your home? My foster mom says
I have “lovely, polite social skills with other dogs.” That’s me—I’m a little lady! I
love to play with toys and will poke my people gently with my nose when I’d like
some loving. I’m working on my house training and crate training and making good
progress. I want to be the best pup I can be for my forever family! I can be a bit timid
and shy at first, but I’m working hard to come out of my shell through confidencebuilding in my foster home.
If you think I might be the perfect new addition to your family, please fill out
an adoption application today! My bags are packed, and I’m ready to go! My
adoption fee is $350 and includes all of my routine vetting, rabies, and distemper/
parvo vaccinations, deworming, spay/neuter surgery, heartworm testing, monthly
heartworm prevention, microchip, and boarding and transportation costs if
applicable, along with an offer for 30 days of free 24PetWatch pet insurance!
Kate Moss
Hi! My name is Kate Moss and I am sooo hoping that you are going to be my next new family! You see, my past life experiences haven’t
been so pleasant. I was found trapped behind a vending machine at a university in Baltimore city and I couldn’t have told you when I’d had
my last meal. They say I was described as a 3-pound bag of bones. Students heard my crying and rushed me to the local shelter...and they
reached out to AARF.
My super awesome foster mom and a wonderful local vet helped to
nurse me back to health and now you can even call me a “full-figured
woman!” I am a little shy at first but then I melt into affectionate purrs
and kisses once I know you.

The Scoop on Poop
By Jill Shook, DVM, CityPets Veterinary Care & Wellness
This month’s pet topic is intestinal parasites—fun, fun, fun! Most
people don’t realize that 95% of puppies and kittens are born with
intestinal parasites. Although adult dogs and cats are typically more
resistant to certain parasites, infections are still fairly common.
Several types of parasites can infect your pets, but the ones most
commonly seen are roundworms, hookworms, whipworms,
tapeworms, Giardia, and Coccidia. General symptoms of parasite
infection include vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), weight
loss, poor haircoat, and poor appetite.
Hookworms live in the small intestines of infected animals.
Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and poor
growth. Anemia can also occur in dogs infected with hookworms.
Dogs and cats can be infected with hookworms in utero, via
ingestion of their mother’s milk while nursing, thru penetration of
the skin by larvae, or by ingesting infective larvae. Ingestion of
infective larvae occurs when dogs and cats consume contaminated
fecal matter. Fecal-oral contact can occur just by your pet walking
around outside then ingesting larvae during normal grooming
behavior and licking their paws.
Roundworms, like hookworms, also live in the small intestines of
animals. Pets with roundworm infection often show no signs of
illness, but symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss,
and distention of the abdomen. Adult roundworms are thin, long
and white (often compared to spaghetti), and can be seen in the
stool and vomit of infected animals. Transmission of roundworms
occurs through ingestion of milk during nursing and ingestion of
infective larvae through fecal-oral contact. Puppies can also be
infected in utero. Roundworm eggs are quite hardy and can survive
in the environment for months to years.

Claire
Mullins,
Whipworms live in the large intestine of infected dogs. This
parasite is a very common cause of acute and chronic diarrhea
in dogs. The diarrhea is often intermittent and usually contains
blood and mucous. In addition to diarrhea, whipworms can cause
weight loss and poor appetite. The eggs are shed intermittently in
the animal’s stool, which makes it difficult to diagnose because
of false-negative fecal exam results. Whipworm eggs are almost
impossible to remove from the environment once present and can
survive for years.
Tapeworms do not often cause clinical signs. Animals contract
this parasite by ingesting fleas and, rarely, rodents. This type of
worm will often be seen by the pet’s owner and is often described
as small “rice”- or “cucumber seed”–shaped worms found in
the stool or around the rectum. Treating this parasite not only
involves medication to kill the adult worms but also proper flea
prevention.
Giardia and Coccidia are one-celled protozoan parasites. Both
can cause diarrhea in dogs and cats. They are transmitted through
ingestion of the infective cyst stage of the parasite through fecaloral contact. Coccidia can also be transmitted by ingestion of
mice infected with Coccidia. Giardia can be transmitted through
drinking of contaminated water.
All of the above intestinal parasites are diagnosed by microscopic
examination of a stool sample. Sometimes, special smears or
antigen tests may be used, usually to diagnose Giardia. In the case
of roundworms and tapeworms, owners may see these in their
pet’s stool. The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC)
recommends that fecal examinations be done 2–4 times during
the first year of your pet’s life, then 1–2 times a year in adult pets.
Routine fecal examinations are an important part of keeping your
pet healthy.
Pet parasites can also be a human health concern. Some intestinal
parasites found in animals can be transmitted to people, through
a process called zoonosis. The most common source of infection
for people is pet fecal matter contaminated with infective eggs.
Roundworms and hookworms can cause larva migrans syndromes
in humans. These syndromes occur when infective larvae burrow
into human skin (hookworms), internal organs (hooks/rounds),
and eyes (roundworms). To help prevent these potentially serious
zoonotic infections you should pick up your pet’s stool daily, wash
your hands after cleaning up pet waste, keep pets free of fleas, and
maintain pets on a regular deworming schedule recommended by
your veterinarian.
Baltimore city has a high concentration of people and pets
in a small area. Not only does animal waste on the streets and
sidewalks detract from the beauty of our neighborhoods, it is a
health risk as well. Children play on the streets and sidewalks, put
their hands and toys in their mouths, and are potentially at risk for
zoonotic infection. Please, please, please pick up after your pet.
For more information contact your veterinarian or visit the
websites featured at www.capcvet.org.
