continuing partnership with the Center.
Members from Capistrano, Saddleback and La Casa
Committees will provide staffing for the event. We are eagerly
anticipating this entire event, from inspiring decorating ideas to
holiday shopping, great speakers and delicious food.
Throughout the two days, celebrated speakers will share
their secrets of designing and entertaining with style. You will
enjoy presentations such as holiday tree decorating, fabulous
centerpieces and yummy food demonstrations. Guest speakers
include Lynn Chichi, an inspiring show on the art of entertaining,

Jim - Chef Jim Douglas has a true passion for real food and
global cuisine and an extraordinary culinary resume; floral design
experts from Rogers Gardens, a destination home and garden
store for those seeking creative ideas and unique products for
outdoor and indoor living; and designer Brad Schmidt, a floral
artist and holiday design genius who turns the ordinary into
spectacular, turns dull into brilliant and achieves it with the ease
and grace of a master painter at his easel.
An array of enticing opportunity prizes will be donated by
participating showrooms. Visit our wonderful boutique for an
intriguing array of specialty gift items, home accessories, clothing,
jewelry, and gorgeous holiday gifts galore. Enjoy delicious foods

From the President and Artistic Director
I’m excited and honored to be addressing you as the new
President and Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Society.
When I was first approached about the possibility of leading this
great organization into its next chapter, one of the most exciting
aspects of the Society was its wide-ranging education and youth
music programs. They truly are second to none, and they would
not be possible without the efforts and support of each of you.
I’m looking forward to seeing all of you and to thank you for
your work and dedication at Committees Night, on Tuesday,
November 4, when we welcome the Czech Philharmonic and pianist Jean-Yves
Thibaudet to the stage of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. It’s the first
concert in the special “3-fer” package of concerts offered at a reduced price for you, our
Committees members. All three are highlights of the season, with a once-in-a-lifetime
performance of Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo and a recital by the electrifying young
violinist Ray Chen rounding out the package. I hope you’ll join us for these three terrific,
hand-picked concerts.
Our youth music education concerts kick off with California Journeys the day after
Committees Night. Having heard so much about all of these concerts, I can’t wait to see
them in person. The Disneyland Band concerts start in January, fifth grade concerts kick
off the next month, and Art and Music returns to captivate high school students from
across the county in March. The High School Orchestra Festival returns for its second
year to cap our season of educational and youth activities on March 26, 2015, and I hope
to see each of you at these wonderful events. I’m especially excited that my son, who
will be starting first grade this year, will benefit from our programs here in the Orange
County schools.
I want to thank Sandi Campbell-McClain and the past Presidents for their welcome
in July. They shared so much about all of the incredible work that each of you does,
but I feel like I’ve just seen the tip of the iceberg. I’m looking forward to seeing all of
our programs in action, and I can’t thank you enough for your support of these truly
amazing programs and of the Society. Together, let’s keep bringing the joy of music to
everyone in Orange County.
Member Caroline Miller
Recognized for her
Artistic Talent
by Margaret Clark
Caroline Miller is a talented 20-year
member of the Big Canyon/ Spyglass
Hill Philharmonic Committee. At 91, she
continues her love of painting and has lent
support to local art programs through the
sale of her paintings at an art exhibition.
Caroline studied with famed Californian
artist Timothy J. Clark in New York City
and she accompanied him to Europe
on many occasions to improve her craft.
Not content at restricting her work to
watercolors, Caroline has expanded her
horizons to oils and abstract art. Her oil
painting,“Mountain of Inspiration,” won
3rd place in the Painting/Mixed Media
category at the
recent 50th annual
Newport Beach
Art Exhibition. It
sold quickly, along
with her second
entry. This juried
show, hosted by
the Newport Beach
Arts Commission, featured more than 200
works from local artists. A portion of the
sales proceeds went to benefit the city’s
growing community art programs.

successful in recent years, raising about $250,000 with income still coming in!
People flocked to the beautiful Strand at the Headlands to see this home, perched high on a hill above the Pacific and
transformed into a Mediterranean Modern masterpiece by nineteen interior designers.
The stars just seemed to align for the House of Design this year, with its breathtaking location, innovative design, and oceanview boutique and café. I heard many guests say,“This is the best Design House ever!” Moreover, they were not talking about
just the Philharmonic House of Design, but every Design House they had ever visited. We should be very proud.
Kudos to everyone who lent their time, support, passion and energy to the 2014 House of Design, so that we may continue to
bring the joy of music to the children of Orange County.
Annual Report
to the
PSOC Board of
Directors
by Sandi-Campbell
McClain
For those who didn’t attend the Society’s
Annual Meeting I just wanted you to know
that I sang a song about our year and
reported on some pretty amazing things.
(Sung to “What a Day This Has Been” from
Brigadoon by Lerner and Loewe)
What a year this has been!
What a rare mood I’m in!
The Committees are so important
to the PSOC!
There’s a smile on my face
for all the programs that took place –
Music Education is so important for our kids!
Did I mention all the fun that we had Raising funds to support the programs that
make us so glad?
House of Design, Cruise of Lights, theater
parties, and much more!
I am grateful for being,
I have really enjoyed being
the President of The Committees this year!!!
Highlights of 2013-14
All singing aside and my apologies to
Lerner and Loewe… More than 90,000
hours were lovingly given by our energetic
and enthusiastic 800 members. More than
165,000 students from all grade levels K-12
have been served. Details are available in
the annual report of The Committees.
These students leave our performances
with new understanding and appreciation,
hopefully serving as seeds to be nurtured
by additional great music experiences
and opportunities, eventually motivating
and inspiring them to become musicians,
singers, concert attendees and ultimately
tomorrow’s patrons and supporters of the
arts, wherever their adult lives take them.
Besides the volunteer hours, we have
raised almost $.5M through the House of
Design, Cruise of Lights, and the myriad of
other Committees fundraisers.
What a magnificent contribution the
members of The Committees make in
support of the mission of the Philharmonic
Society of Orange County and what an
incredible impact they have on the lives of
the children of Orange County!

by Linda England, President of The Committees
I want to welcome all of you to the new term and 61st year
of the Philharmonic Society, which we are about to begin. I look
forward very much to serving as your President and hope you will
have a wonderful and rewarding experience being a member of this
great volunteer organization.
We are very excited this year to welcome into the PSOC our new President and Artistic
Director, Mr. John Mangum, who began his assignment with us in July. Mr. Mangum is a
very talented and energetic new force in the organization and we look forward to working
with him.
We will start off our season with the annual Fall Kick-Off on September 10th at St.
Mark Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach. The event will feature introductions of the
new Committees Executive Board as well as presentations by John Mangum and Noel
Hamilton, President of the Philharmonic Society. We will also enjoy entertainment and
refreshments, have an opportunity to re-bond with members of other Committees and
make new friends. I hope you will all attend and take advantage of this delightful event.
And, of course, we will all be reinvigorated and renewed by our annual workshops on
September 4th.
One important way we reward and honor our volunteers every year is to offer them
concert tickets with excellent seating at a very attractive price, three concerts for $75
total. This season’s dates are November 4th - the Czech Philharmonic, April 25th -English
Baroque Soloists, and May 12th with Ray Chen. The concert on November 4th will be
a special Committees Night with a reception for our members. I hope you will all take
advantage of this lovely opportunity before the deadline on October 1st .
Even though it is still summer, many of our well-known annual fundraising events
are already on our calendar. Here are just a few of them: The HHPC “Holiday Boutique”
is scheduled for October 24th and 25th, “Entertaining by Design” sponsored by the
Saddleback and Capistrano Committees is scheduled for November 7th and 8th. The HHPC
Cruise of Lights begins on December 13th and lasts through December 23rd, 2014, a
wonderful way to celebrate the holidays this year.
The Second Annual High School Orchestra Festival which was a stand-out success
last year is scheduled for March 26, 2015, and don’t forget the very popular Santa AnaTustin/Huntington Valley West Author’s Luncheon on January 19th. There will be many
more fundraisers and special opportunities to contribute to and enjoy our wonderful
organization. I look forward to telling you all more details as they are available.

Music Mobile on Lido Isle
by Ellie Yates
The Fourth of July parade on Lido
Isle was once again brightened
with John Phillip Sousa march
music from the boom box on the
hood of the Philharmonic Music
Mobile. Lido Isle Committee
members Ellie Yates, Gail
Rosenstein, Nancy Wimer and
Evelyn Kroener marched in front
of the van, pictured, left to right.
Gail carried her father's violin. All
the others waved American flags.
They were cheered on by the
many people watching from the
sides of the street as the parade
passed by. A good time was had by all.
Music Scholarships Awarded
by Marie Fries
The Capistrano Philharmonic Committee was excited to be able to offer five music
scholarships this year. These scholarships are awarded to high school students who
have been recommended by their teachers, and have written to the Committee why
they are eligible to receive a $250.00 scholarship. Scholarships were awarded through
The Committees’ Musical Reinvestment Program and the Donna Day Memorial
Scholarship Fund. Pictured are Lily Homma,
who plays the French Horn; Jennifer Lee,
the violin; Isabella Pepke, the cello; all from
Capistrano Valley High School, and Daniel
Fabian, string bass and Cassie Gatbonton,
violin, from Dana Hills High School. These
young musicians have performed for the
Capistrano Committee. The Capistrano
Committee has been offering music to
Orange County students since 1984.
Ralphs Rewards Card
Fundraiser
for Youth Music Programs
by Jan Lawrence
To help earn money for Philharmonic Youth Music Programs in an easy, painless
way, obtain and register your Ralphs rewards card as outlined below. You may sign
up anytime during the year to join, but must re-register each September. The first
day you can register for the new term is September 1. Register by using either the
bar code or online method listed below.
Register, and then use your card EVERY TIME you shop. You receive store
discounts, while 1% of the total will be credited to The Committees account. Think
about your food bill during the holidays. What if we multiplied it by 800 members
and got 1% back to fund music programs? This is a Win–Win for both you and The
Committees.
Hint: Include a phone number on your application so instead of using your actual
card, you can have all your family members get the store discounts when they shop
at Ralphs, and the PSOC receives 1% of their totals, too. Ask friends to register their
own Ralphs reward card and link to us.
An email should be sent from Ralphs in about a week to verify your registration
or call Ralphs Customer Service at 1-800-660-9003 (and then press 3) to verify you
are registered, get help, have questions answered about the Community Rewards
program, or update your information.

UNDER THE
by Margaret Clark
Celebrating 40 years of support to the
Philharmonic Society of Orange County,
the Big Canyon/Spyglass Hill Committee
held its annual fundraiser at Prego
Ristorante in Irvine, aptly entitled “Under
the Tuscan Stars.”
Committee Members Harriet Selna and
Robynn Mallory
As each guest arrived, they were
greeted by president, Barbara Steinberg,
a glass of Prosecco, and the soft sweet
sounds of Walter Lakota’s saxophone.
After an appropriate interlude of
cocktails and conversation, guests were
treated to an evening of fine dining,
a silent auction and a Chinese-Italian
auction. Couples took advantage of the
music of Jim Roberts and found the
dance floor. A videographer was present
to record the high jinks along with
attendee interviews—all to be used to
tell a story of the various Philharmonic
Committees, the work they do, and their
contribution to the Philharmonic Society.
Huntington Harbour Committee Gearing for its
52nd Annual Cruise of Lights®
by Eva Kilgore
The Huntington Harbour
Committee is happily gearing
up for the 52nd annual
Huntington Harbour Boat
Parade and Cruise of Lights®.
On December 13th and 14th,
dozens of boats will thrill
thousands of onlookers as they
wind around the Huntington
Harbour waterways. Many
boat owners will decorate to
celebrate the theme: "Music in
Paradise." Judges will award
beautiful trophies in categories such as Sweepstakes, Best Tribute to Theme, and many
more. Decks and docks will be filled with spectators cheering, and thoroughly enjoying
this yearly tradition. If you have a boat and haven't been in the parade, consider
entering this year. You are sure to have a wonderful time, and you'll be making lasting
memories.
The boat parade is a thank-you to residents for decorating their homes. Without their
incredible decorations, we wouldn't be able to present the Cruise of Lights® each year.
It is right after the boat parade, and this year it will be December 17th through 23rd.
This 45-minute narrated boat cruise takes more than 10,000 visitors on tours around
the Harbour to "ooh" and "aah" over spectacular decorations. Lights are reflected from
chimneys, windows, light posts, and anywhere the eye can see...all the way to the water.
Some homes even have animation. Homeowners enter a yearly decorating contest, and
some are recipients of trophies. For many, the Cruise of Lights® is a family tradition.
We've had two marriage proposals on the Cruise. Some of our guests come from as far
away as China.
Cruise of Lights® tickets make excellent gifts for family, friends, and coworkers.
Huntington Harbour Committee volunteers work year-round to present the boat
parade and Cruise of Lights®. You'll see us everywhere in our blue and white sweatshirts
loading and unloading buses, commentating, on walkie-talkies, selling tickets, and
always with big smiles on our faces, knowing we're helping to assure future music
programs for our children and grandchildren. We'd love to invite all The Committees
members to our special Chili Night on Thursday, December 18th. It might be cold in
December, but we're just warming up for "Music in Paradise." For more information,
visit our website, www.CruiseOfLights.org or call (714) 840-7542.

What a year we had for music4kids!
Your response to the music4kids
Challenge was phenomenal. We
raised almost $60,000 plus the $50,000
in matching funds. Hurrah for The
Committees and our music programs!
But there is more to do. Our “Strike
Up the Band” program is just getting
started, providing musical instruments
to schools where many students cannot
afford to buy or even rent instruments
of their own. We launched our first ever
High School Orchestra Festival, giving
five local high schools an opportunity
to play “on the big stage” at Segerstrom
Hall. More than 165,000 students were
enriched throughout the year by our free
music education programs.
We continue to need your help as we
strive to “raise the bar” with the music
opportunities we can offer to the school
children of Orange County. music4kids
funds can only be used for the support
and expansion of our music education
programs. Whether it’s $100, $500, or
$1000, your generous contribution will
help secure our mission to provide free
music education to public and private
schools for years to come.
