A Note from the President….
Dear Members,
Hope that everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving and wishing everyone a Happy Holiday season! Don't
forget to plan ahead, Eastern's February Agility Trial will be upon us soon (February 20-21, 2016 in
Amherst, NH) and we will need help from as many members as possible to be able to make this a
success. Please remember, the funds raised by the club from this trial help to pay the expenses for the
June Specialty Show, so even if you do show your own dog in agility, help out your club and volunteer!!

REMEMBERING ALICE EISNER BERD
In October 2015, our English Springer community lost a very dear friend. Long time Springer
enthusiast, breeder, judge, mentor, and parent club/Foundation supporter Alice Berd passed away.
Alice’s love for our breed extended over nearly eight decades. Her “Pembroke” prefix was well
established by the time she moved from Michigan to Connecticut with her husband, Walter, and their
three children – Tom, Nancy, and Kathy. Her Pembroke breedings were always interesting; she focused
on moderate, typey spaniels and maintained hunting instinct within dogs of clear (and very successful)
show style. Alice was extremely knowledgeable about breed development in the US, and – in her 80’s –
branched out to learn about Springers in the country of origin, making a lengthy visit to England
where she met many breeders and forged new friendships – as Alice always did.
Her service to the breed and purebred dogs was long and distinguished. She was very active with the
Michigan and Eastern clubs, as well as her all breed club, South Windsor Kennel Club. For the parent
club, she served for many years as corresponding/membership secretary and later as long-time AKC
delegate. She helped form the New England Sporting Dog Association. She judged several sporting
breeds including her own.
Page 9

NOVEMBER 2015
Alice was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College. In addition to her Connecticut home, she spent
summers surrounded by family at her second home in Greensboro, Vermont where writers, actors, and
Supreme Court justices all bought their groceries at The Willey’s Store; the only store in town.
Alice’s three children – now with children and grandchildren of their own – have asked that memorials
be sent to the English Springer Foundation. So, in order to honor and remember her always, we have
established “The Alice Project.” Its purpose: to capture histories and images of our breed’s “elder
statespersons,” both show and field, through conducting interviews and collecting priceless photos. The
Foundation has given $500 to begin the project, as part of the Foundation’s Archives Fund.
We hope you agree that this is a fitting tribute to a remarkable friend and mentor to so many. Alice’s
complete photo archives and story are her family’s gift to the Foundation; a priceless treasure.
If you would like to help launch “The Alice Project,” you can make your gift on line, designated in
memory of Alice Berd. Go to www.englishspringerfoundation.org and thank you for remembering a
remarkable woman and a dear friend and mentor to so many.

Present: Pat, Betsy, Sue Ellen, Tom, Deb, Jennye, Ed , Cheryl and Adam Lester (via Phone).
Pat called the meeting into order
Motion made, seconded and minutes for the last meeting were approved.
Report of the treasurer: The financial report was incomplete and will be made available before the Cape
Cod membership meeting. Motion made , seconded and approved to table financial report.
Futurity report: Jennye reported the following: to date, 23 bitches nominated, 12 puppies enrolled for
2016 and there were 35 bitches nominated and 47 puppies for 2015 show.
Specialty report: Betsy reports that thank you notes were received from the specialty judges and these
notes will be entered in the newsletter. Crowne Plaza has provided a new contract. Betsy was informed

Page 10

NOVEMBER 2015
Obedience and rally: Betsy will ask Alice the specialty show secretary for a list of local obedience and
rally judges. Tom has agreed to post this list in the newsletter.
Agility report: Sue Ellen is all set for August shows. Approx.. 500 entries for Saturday and Sunday. It
was suggested that a match take place at this show as a way to bring in more money. Entries are down
from last year as this show is not on labor day this year. Sue Ellen indicates that volunteers are still
needed for this show. Tom will send out a notice requesting membership help for these shows in the
newsletter.
Cheer: Dawn will be requested to send Alice Berd a care package. A donation will be sent for the
Scholl’s cause in their memory.
Membership: Pat will call Crickett to advise her to send bylaws, membership book, welcome letter and a
club pin to new members once they are approved and published in the newsletter.
Tom reviewed the bylaw process- secretary receives application,(scans and sends to board) to announce
after approved. Tom will send out a supplemental announcement to membership. After 30 days has
lapsed, the board can vote the member in online.
2015 National basket report: Deb indicates she has not received donations from membership. Motion
made, seconded and approved for $100.00 budget to supplement the basket.
Newsletter- Tom suggested the newsletter go out after a board meeting. The thought is that this might
make for a more timely process.
Unfinished Business:
Ramp- Betsy reported that the feedback provided was that our ramp was both too high and needs
reinforcing for stability. It was noted that Linda Johnson’s husband has offered to make one in the past.
Deb N. has agreed to ask Linda if her husband will look at the ramp and see if it can be modified. The
AKC website has specifics for the ramp.
Awards Issues/ medallions- Due to comments, a new design will be explored for the club medallions.
Jennye and Cheryl will visit Woodbury Pewter to discuss. Jennye Hansen will call Lauren Howard to
inquire about stock design.
Obedience/rally trial: Sue Ellen proposed obedience/rally for specialty “Springer only”. This would
eliminate the need for a tent, exclude “all breed” or, move this event to an indoor venue separate from the
specialty.
Motion made, seconded and approved to have a Springer only obedience/rally trial using the current
conformation tent at the 2016 specialty and to hold a separate “all breed trial” apart from the June
specialty.
Matches: Sue Ellen declines running these matches going forward. She would however, like to see
something new for the matches. She suggested a memorial day weekend match as an example. Sue Ellen
offered to explore a local facility to possibly hold this match. She will report back these possible options
to the board.
Further plans for a match will be discussed at the next meeting as they are required by the AKC.
New members:
Motion made, seconded and approved for Howard and Heidi Huber to become new EESSC members.
New business: Jennye reports continued difficulty getting futurity requests. It was suggested try adding a
new e-mail address to see if this helps.
Meeting adjourned at 2:20PM
Respectfully submitted,
Cheryl L. Giampapa- EESSC secretary
