Today is all about your wonderful achievements.
Enjoy your moment. Whatever path you take next, our
best wishes go with you.
Royal Albert Hall.
Warm regards,
As we celebrate our new graduates’
remarkable achievements at Imperial, we reflect not only on academic
distinctions already attained, but also on the opportunities and
challenges to come, the goals we are yet to accomplish, the rewards still
to be reaped.
Imperial did not become one of the world’s great universities by
letting its students off lightly. Postgraduate study at Imperial requires
remarkable intellectual prowess, sustained hard work and exceptional
creative thinking. Not everyone has what it takes, but today’s graduates
do. Thank you for choosing to bring your extraordinary talents here and
enriching our community.
I also wish to extend a special thanks to the family and friends here
today who have provided invaluable support, guidance and advice
over many years of study. You deserve to feel great pride in our
graduates’ success.

past and present
e
A new chapter in the
College’s history began in
2007 with the celebration of
Imperial’s 100th birthday and its new
status as an independent university.
Today’s graduation ceremonies
recognise the continuing high
achievement of Imperial’s students.
Imperial currently attracts over 14,000
students and 6,000 staff of the
highest international quality and has
a worldwide reputation for excellence
in teaching and research. The College
began its journey towards its current
position—third in Europe and eighth in
the world, as rated by the 2012–13
THE World University Rankings—a
century ago with just 600 students and
12 professors.
The College was founded in July 1907
by the merger of three great nineteenth
century institutions—the Royal College
of Science, the City and Guilds College
and the Royal School of Mines. The late
twentieth century saw mergers with
St Mary’s Hospital Medical School,
the National Heart and Lung Institute,
the Charing Cross and Westminster
Medical School, the Royal Postgraduate
Medical School, Wye College and the
Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology. The
Imperial of today operates across seven
campuses and several associated sites
in west London and the home counties.
Imperial’s founding charter created
an institution “… to give the highest
specialised instruction and to provide
the fullest equipment for the most
advanced training and research in
various branches of science especially
in its application to industry”. This
commitment to apply Imperial’s
research for the benefit of all has
been a constant theme throughout
the College’s history, and holds strong
today with current focuses including
interdisciplinary collaborations
to tackle climate change, and
mathematical modelling to predict
and control the spread of infectious
diseases, such as avian flu.

With 73 Fellows of the Royal Society
among our current academic staff
or with an ongoing association with
the College, and distinguished past
members of the College including
14 Nobel laureates and two Fields
Medallists, Imperial’s contribution to
society during its history has been
immense. Inventions and innovations
include the discovery of penicillin, the
development of holography and the
foundations of fibre optics.
Famous names associated with Imperial
include T.H. Huxley, one of the greatest
scientists of the nineteenth century;
the author H.G. Wells; joint Nobel
Prize winners, Sir Alexander Fleming
and Sir Ernst Chain, discoverers of
penicillin; W.E. Dalby, the internationally
renowned railway engineer; W.H. Perkin,
inventor of mauveine, the first aniline
dye that led to the development of the
synthetic chemical industry; Sir Almroth
Wright, a pioneer of vaccination; Eric
Laithwaite, known for his development
of magnetically levitated (maglev)
high-speed trains; and George Finch
who, in 1922, was able to climb higher
than any previous mountaineer due
to his pioneering work on oxygen and
breathing apparatus.
Since the College’s creation, about
170,000 of the brightest students in
the world have been educated by such
authorities in their subjects. Today, the
College attracts students from over 150
countries across the globe, and has
a network of international links and
collaborations with many of the world’s
top universities.
The College coat of arms
The College coat of arms, which
incorporates the royal coat of arms,
was assigned by royal warrant dated
6 June 1908. The motto was devised
by Imperial’s Governing Body with
the name as well as the purpose of
the College in mind and perhaps
drawing ‘decus et tutamen’ from line
262 of Book V of Virgil’s Aeneid. The
translation appropriate to the spirit
of the age and the intentions of the
founders is “scientific knowledge, the
crowning glory and the safeguard of
the empire”.

Imperial’s graduation ceremonies
Until 1955, Imperial’s graduation
ceremonies took place in the Great Hall
of the University of London, which was
then located in the Imperial Institute
at the heart of the South Kensington
Campus. Before each ceremony, a
formal College procession filed from
Prince Consort Road to the Great Hall
of the Institute. All that remains of the
Imperial Institute today is the Queen’s
Tower, saved from demolition in the
late 1960s.
The first College graduation ceremony
in the Royal Albert Hall was held on
26 October 1955. The day’s events
commemorated the 1945 centenary
of the Royal College of Science; the
oldest forerunner of Imperial. The
RCS centenary was attended by King
George VI and Queen Elizabeth and
its anniversary became known as
Commemoration Day in honour of
their visit.
Imperial undergraduates and
postgraduates were all presented at
the same ceremony in the Royal Albert
Hall on Commemoration Day each
October until 1996, when a ceremony
for postgraduates only was added in
May. In 2007, as part of the College’s
Centenary celebrations, a special
graduation ceremony was held in
Singapore to reflect the large number of
students coming to Imperial from Asia.
The Imperial mace
Imperial’s graduation ceremonies see
the procession of the Imperial mace,
pictured right, a generous gift from
the Goldsmiths’ Company that marks
Imperial becoming a university in its
own right and the award of its new
charter by Her Majesty The Queen in
2007. First used in 2009, the mace is
made of silver and gilt, and weighs
7.1 kg. It was made by craftsmen from
Padgham and Putland of Kent and
its intricate workings incorporate the
College coat of arms and motto.
The future cannot be
predicted, but futures can be invented.”
The history of our academic dress
The robes our graduates wear today have
their origin in the everyday dress of the
Middle Ages which consisted of a tunic
and cloak and, to protect the head and
shoulders, a hood. The ancient universities
in Europe began as communities of scholars
and teachers in religious schools around
great cathedrals or monasteries. Students
there were clerics, who would have worn
clothing similar to that of everyone else at
the time. As fashions in the world changed,
the church and universities retained their
cloaks which became the main item of
academic dress.
— Dennis Gabor FRS, Professor of Electron Physics
at Imperial, inventor of holography and Nobel laureate
For centuries, the shape of a university
robe’s sleeve denoted the degree attained
by its wearer. However, the advent of
many new universities, each requiring an
individual system of robes, brought changes
that continue being made to the present
day. Until 2007, all Imperial College London
graduates wore University of London
academic dress. Then, to reflect Imperial’s
status as an independent university, new
robes were designed and today’s graduation
ceremonies see graduates wearing both
College and University of London robes. See
page 5 for more details.

New campus
Leaders from business, research and
government attended the launch in
March 2013 of the vision for Imperial
West, a new seven-acre campus in
White City close to the Hammersmith
Campus in west London. A £150 million
Research and Translation Hub – a highspecification, multidisciplinary research
space for scientists and engineers and
state-of-the art incubator space for
spinout companies – will form the core
of a £1 billion ‘innovation ecosystem’
within which 3,000 researchers will
work to solve scientific challenges of
the future. The Mayor of London, Boris
Johnson, and the Universities and
Science Minister, David Willetts MP,
spoke at the event, highlighting the
project’s benefit to the local community
and the London economy.
Phase one of the development at the
site has seen the construction of Wood
Lane Studios – 600 studio apartments
for postgraduates. The first residents
arrived in September 2012. The campus
will eventually also include leisure and
retail facilities, a conference centre,
homes for Imperial College London and
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
key workers and for private sale, and a
public square.

Honorary degree
K
An Imperial College London honorary degree is conferred on
persons of conspicuous merit, who are outstanding in
their field.
Professor Dame
Ann Dowling
Sir John Parker
A world authority on
combustion, acoustics
and vibration, Dame
Ann Dowling, FRS,
FREng, is Professor
of Mechanical
Engineering and Head
of the Department
of Engineering at
the University of
Cambridge.
Initially a student of mathematics at Cambridge, a
summer job at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in
Farnborough sparked Dame Ann’s lifelong fascination
with aircraft noise and she chose her PhD specialisation
in engineering.
Dame Ann became a Cambridge research fellow in
1977 and has remained at the university ever since,
notwithstanding visiting posts at MIT in 1999 and
Caltech in 2001. In 1993 she became the Department of
Engineering’s first ever female professor.
Dame Ann’s research on unsteady combustion provides
insight and models that are enabling gas turbine
manufacturers to avoid damaging instabilities in low
emission combustors.
She demonstrated that active feedback control is a
powerful way of eliminating the damaging interactions
that lead to instability. This complements the passive
control techniques that Dame Ann has developed that
are now being pursued by a number of manufacturers.
A noted business,
industry and education
leader, Sir John Parker,
FREng, is president of
the Royal Academy of
Engineering, chairman
of Anglo American,
vice-chairman of
DP World, and a
non-executive director
of EADS (Airbus) and
Carnival Corporation.
He is a visiting fellow at the University of Oxford, has
chaired several FTSE 100 companies and the Court of the
Bank of England.
Born in County Down, Sir John studied naval architecture
and mechanical engineering at the College of Technology
and Queen’s University Belfast. He joined Harland and
Wolff, initially as a student apprentice, rising to become
the shipbuilding group’s general manager for sales and
projects.
In the shipbuilding industry, Sir John has overseen
both nationalisation – as managing director of Austin
and Pickersgill and a board member of the British
Shipbuilders Corporation in the 1970s – and successful
privatisation, leading Harland and Wolff’s 1980s
turnaround. In the 1990s Sir John transformed Babcock
International as chairman and chief executive.
In 1997 Sir John became a non-executive director of
British Gas, later becoming chairman of Lattice Group
following its demerger from BG Group in 2000. He
oversaw Lattice’s merger with National Grid where he
became chair in 2002. After chairing Firth Rixson, RMC
and P&O among others, Sir John assumed his current
role as chairman of Anglo American in 2009.
Dame Ann’s work with Cambridge and MIT colleagues
has resulted in the release of a conceptual design for a
fuel efficient and almost noiseless aircraft.
Her work in aeronautics and energy has been recognised
by fellowships of the Royal Society and Royal Academy of
Engineering, and foreign associate membership of both
the US National Academy of Engineering and the French
Academy of Sciences.
She is a non-executive director of BP, a panel chair for
the Research Excellence Framework, a keen pilot and, as
rated by BBC Radio Four’s Woman’s Hour, one of the 100
most powerful women in the country.
A fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering since 1983,
Sir John spearheaded a major fundraising campaign to
greatly expand its education and outreach activities. He
was elected President in 2011.
Sir John has served on the Prime Minister’s Business
Council for Britain, the Defence Academy Advisory
Board, the government’s Asia Task Force, and was deputy
chairman of the White Ensign Association. He was
recently Chancellor of the University of Southampton
(2006–11) and remains an Elder Brother of Trinity House.
He was knighted in 2001 for services to the defence and
shipbuilding industries and was appointed GBE in 2012
for services to Industry and the voluntary sectors.

Imperial College London Postgraduate Graduation Ceremony
Wednesday 1 May 2013 • Royal Albert Hall
Professor
Tim Pedley
An internationally
renowned applied
mathematician
specialising in the
application of fluid
mechanics to biology
and medicine, Tim
Pedley, FRS, is
Emeritus GI Taylor
Professor of Fluid
Mechanics at the
University of Cambridge and sits on the Engineering and
Physical Sciences Research Council.
Professor Sir
Adrian Smith
A distinguished
statistician,
civil servant and
university leader,
Sir Adrian Smith, FRS,
is Vice-Chancellor of
the University
of London.
After a Cambridge PhD in applied mathematics and
theoretical physics, Professor Pedley became a
postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Mechanics at
Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In 1968 he began
a five-year stint as a lecturer in Imperial College London’s
Physiological Flow Studies Unit and Department of
Mathematics.
After studying at
the University of
Cambridge and UCL, Sir Adrian researched and taught
at the University of Oxford, UCL and the University of
Nottingham, where he became Professor of Statistics
and Head of the Department of Mathematics. He went on
to spend eight years at Imperial College London, where
he became Head of the Department of Mathematics and
Chair of Statistics, was a member of the Management
Planning Group and Director of ICON, as well as serving
as President of the Royal Statistical Society from
1995–97.
In 1973 he became a lecturer, and later reader, in the
Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical
Physics at Cambridge, staying until 1990 when he was
appointed Professor of Applied Mathematics at the
University of Leeds. After six years in Leeds, he returned
once again to Cambridge as GI Taylor Professor, and
from 2000–05 was Head of the Department of Applied
Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.
He is renowned for research into Bayesian theory,
especially on the significance of the Gibbs sampler and
particle filter, both keys to the calculation of Bayesian
statistical inferences in complex, higher-dimensional
problems. Sir Adrian also co-translated Bruno de Finetti’s
influential theory of probability into English. He was
elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2001 for his
contributions to statistics.
Professor Pedley was Editor of the Journal of Fluid
Mechanics from 2000–05, having been an associate
editor since 1983. His research in biological fluid
dynamics has resulted in around 150 publications,
encompassing his earlier interests in internal
physiological fluid mechanics and his more recent work
on the interaction of living organisms with their fluid
environments, particularly the collective behaviour of
swimming micro-organisms.
Throughout his career, Sir Adrian has worked to narrow
the gulf between academia and government, advising
the Office for National Statistics, Department of the
Environment, Nuclear Waste Inspectorate and Ministry of
Defence. In 2003–04 he undertook an inquiry into post-14
mathematics education for the education secretary, and
in 2006 he completed a report for the home secretary
on the issue of public trust in crime statistics. He has
held numerous private sector statistical consultancies
in business and finance, pharmaceuticals and
communications and power industries.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society where he serves on
the Council, and has foreign membership of several other
learned societies including the US National Academy
of Engineering, the American Physical Society, India’s
National Academy of Sciences, and Academia Europaea,
among others.
When taking a break from his academic pursuits,
Professor Pedley likes to go birdwatching with his wife,
Avril, or to tackle challenging crossword puzzles.
Between 1998 and 2008 Sir Adrian served as Principal of
Queen Mary, University of London. After stepping down,
he became Director General of Science and Research at
the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills,
later to become the Department for Business Innovation
and Skills (BIS). In 2010 he was appointed Director
General of Knowledge and Innovation at BIS, where
he applied his statistical judgment and commitment
to evidence-based policy to management of the
government’s multi-billion pound research budget.
Sir Adrian was knighted in 2011 and became
Vice-Chancellor of the University of London in
September 2012.

A common fallacy...
to which science is subjected
today is that it claims certainty,
infallibility and complete
emotional objectivity. It would be
more nearly true to say that it is
based upon wonder, adventure and
hope.”

May every young scientist
remember... and not fail to keep his eyes open
for the possibility that an irritating failure of
his apparatus to give consistent results may
once or twice in a lifetime conceal an important
discovery.”

A message for
new alumni
Congratulations on your graduation
from Imperial today.
Graduation day belongs to you, to share with friends, family
and everyone who has helped you along the way. It’s an
opportunity to reflect – and perhaps breathe a sigh of relief and
satisfaction for the goal you’ve achieved. At times during your
studies, you may not have seen yourself reaching this point;
postgraduate life is tough and demanding, and you should be
proud of your success.
My hope is that Imperial will remain relevant to you long after
today. Your relationship as an alumnus is only just beginning;
when you cross the Royal Albert Hall’s stage, you are joining our community of over 160,000
alumni in 192 countries. On behalf of them all, I am delighted to welcome you.
Whatever your future plans and wherever in the world you might end up, Imperial’s 60
worldwide alumni associations will be delighted to welcome you. To hear about the social
events and networking opportunities they offer, make sure you officially register as an
alumnus at www.imperial.ac.uk/alumni. Membership is lifelong and free, so please keep us
updated with your latest contact details.
In time, you may find yourself in a position to give
something back, keeping the College open to the brightest
students and continuing to provide a world class education
for them. An increasing proportion of Imperial alumni are
already proud supporters of the College and some of you
may have benefited from scholarships funded through
the generosity of your predecessors. Over the last couple
of years, alumni donations tripled the number of Rector’s
Scholarships provided by regular individual contributions.
In the future, with your support, I hope we shall fund many
more and enable a new generation of excellent scholars to
graduate from Imperial.
I wish you and your family a very happy graduation day
and hope that you enjoy your first official alumni event –
the reception that follows this ceremony. Please stay in
touch and share your news via the Alumni Office, and keep
an eye out for issue 39 of Imperial magazine, which will be
in the post later this year.
Many congratulations, once again, and a very warm
welcome to the Imperial family.
Registering also means that you will continue to have access to the Careers Advisory Service
and Central Library, as well as a dedicated alumni jobs board and professional networking
directory. In addition to these services, I would also like to invite you to join our LinkedIn
group, Imperial College London Alumni. Membership of this group will allow you to reunite
with classmates and make new connections with fellow alumni. With over 6,600 members,
the group provides an excellent opportunity to network professionally and remain in touch
with the College.
I am also pleased to highlight our new and exclusive Alumni Visitor Centre near the main
entrance of the South Kensington Campus. The Centre contains a lounge with complimentary
Wi-Fi, refreshments and the latest information about the College, as well as a bookable
meeting room. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future and hope you will
drop in to take advantage of this excellent new facility.
