Why
study in
Catalonia?
There are very good reasons to study in
Catalonia.
High standards
Catalan universities are renowned for their
research and independent thinking, and
this reputation is accredited with nationally
certified degrees and rigorous quality
control.
Strong links to research
What further distinguishes Catalonia is
the high percentage of university-based
research, which makes building a strong
connection between research and
education possible.
Close cooperation with industry
Many master’s programs give students a
chance to work in close cooperation with
industry, giving them a distinct advantage
over their peers when entering the labor
market.
Future career
Being an international master’s degree
student at a Catalan university gives you
more than just a high-quality education.
It gives you a place where you can start
building your future career.

CATALONIA:
A KNOWLEDGE HUB IN
SOUTHERN EUROPE
All of the university
master’s degree
courses offered at
Catalan universities have
been evaluated by prestigious
independent institutions such as
AQU Catalunya (Agency for Quality
Assurance in the Catalan University
System), which is a member of
the European Association for Quality
Assurance in Higher Education
(ENQA) and of the International
Network for Quality Assurance
Agencies in Higher Education
(INQAAHE).
In the elite world of research
Catalonia is in the group of the
five leading countries in European
Research Council (ERC) calls
per million inhabitants and it also
occupies the third position in the
European Union. Catalonia boasts
twice the European average of
attracting researcher excellence
grants.
Access to large-scale scientific
facilities
Catalonia has large-scale infrastructures,
such as the Barcelona Supercomputing
Center (BSC), the ALBA Synchrotron Light
Facility and the CNAG, one of the major
genome sequencing centers in Europe.
Campuses of Excellence
Nine Catalan universities hold the title of
International Campus of Excellence. This
distinction recognizes the university’s
quality and excellence as well as its
contribution to the social and economic
environment.
ECTS
Master’s degree courses are based on
credits, in accordance with the European
Credit Transfer and Accumulation System
(ECTS). Each credit corresponds to 25 to 30
working hours, the time required to complete
all planned learning activities, including
attending lectures, seminars, independent
and private study, preparation of projects and
examinations.
One- or two-year programs
Master’s degree courses are a minimum
of 60 credits and a maximum of 120, the
equivalent of one or two academic years of
full-time study, respectively.
Access
Anyone with an officially recognized university
degree may apply for admission to a
master’s degree course. Those with
a qualification obtained at a foreign
university may be admitted to a
master’s degree course provided
that they obtain prior official
recognition of their degree or, if
this is not possible, prior verification
that their studies constitute a level of
education equivalent to that of a Spanish
bachelor’s degree and which would enable
their admission to a postgraduate course in
the country issuing the qualification. Official
admission will depend on the individual
university’s admission criteria.
Prices, grants and funding
Fees can be found online. Students taking
master’s degree courses may apply for
grants and funding at www.agaur.cat.
Specific funding is also available to
facilitate student mobility and researcher
training, for those wishing to carry out
research or complete their doctoral
thesis.
Information on grants and funding: The
Agency for Management of University and
Research Grants (AGAUR) also offers specific
financial aid programs for students (preferential
loans to cover enrollment fees, purchase
computers, obtain guaranties, etc.).

A support
system for
international
students
All Catalan universities have guidance and information
services, either in person or online. These services will help
and inform the international students regarding everything
that concerns their studies and the university services they
may need during their stay.
The Catalan universities promote and support all the services
and activities that enable students to make the most of
university life, such as libraries, teaching laboratories, sports
facilities, medical insurance and job banks.
