Hope for Paws Animal Rescue
Our Lives Have Gone to the Dogs, 2nd Ed.
Hope for Paws, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, rescues, fosters, and rehabilitates animals from streets and shelters that need a little hope—anywhere, anytime, any day. They go any distance, great and small, for animals in need and people too, because education is the key to ending animal abuse and abandonment. Dubbed "extreme animal rescuers," they are the first call for other animal groups—the rescuers for the rescuers. BIOGRAPHY: ELDAD HAGAR Eldad Hagar grew up in Northern Israel with a unique reputation as the caretaker for sick or lost animals. Whenever someone discovered an abandoned bird or motherless kittens, it was Eldad to the rescue. His dog Lady, an English Pointer mix, helped him care for and heal his animal orphans, providing the comfort and safety they needed. Eldad moved to Los Angeles and met a new lady—his wife, Audrey. Together, they’re on a mission. Refusing to accept the horrible fate of so many animals in their community, this couple committed their lives to fostering the needy animals of their citywide “neighborhood.” From abandoned and shelter dogs (moments from being euthanized) to starved souls running scared in the streets, they believe every dog can be rehabilitated, physically and mentally, and placed in the perfect forever home. Currently Eldad and Audrey have released a second edition of their book, Our Lives Have Gone to the Dogs, which tells select stories of the more than 500 dogs (and a few other critters) that have shared their home, and raises awareness worldwide for shelter and rescue adoption. Now sold out in print, the book is available as a free download at eldadhagar.com. Hope for Paws also supports other groups that do amazing work for animals, and this week they are asking everyone to vote for The Forgotten Dog Foundation to win a $250,000 donation from Chase Community Giving. www.M4PR.com “In our house, evolution doesn’t take millions of years; it usually takes a few hours. To take a dog that was scheduled to die or would never have been picked up from the street, and see it become a happy animal who ends up in an amazing home, gives you the best feeling in the world.” – Eldad Hagar INSPIRED BY SHELTER ADOPTION Ten years ago, Eldad and Audrey took one lucky shelter dog home... and one became hundreds that experienced love, ate good food, played, and slept at the foot of their bed. One day, Eldad assisted in rescuing a stray and realized he had the experience and disposition to save animals in extreme circumstances. He rescued dogs from foreclosed homes and downtown streets, all while rescuing special “unadoptable” cases from shelters; it became his full-‐time, volunteer “job.” He is proving, one rescue at a time, that people should not fear homeless animals. TO THE RESCUE! How does Eldad Hagar capture abandoned, near-‐wild dogs? Kindness...and cheeseburgers! Street dogs have a weakness for fast food; they survive on scraps. He gains trust with food, then decides to leash the animal, use a trap, corner it, or in dire straits, grab it with his bare hands. Next he gives the animal what it’s missed most: love. As an educational tool, he captures each inspiring rescue on video using a tiny hand-‐held camera (available on YouTube), which all have one thing in common—even the toughest are smiling when it’s over. A SPECIAL RESCUE: DUKE Abandoned in downtown Los Angeles with another dog, Duke had been living on active train tracks for weeks when HILARY BARRAFORD found him. She called rescue groups, animal control and the police, but no one would help. She didn’t give up, and fed both dogs for a week until the other dog was picked up—again leaving Duke behind. Finally, Westside German Shepherd Rescue offered help, but had no way of getting Duke. They called ELDAD HAGAR, and within hours Duke was safe, examined by a vet and had a long-‐overdue bath. Eldad bought everything Duke would possibly need—and guided him every step of the way. BIOGRAPHY: HILARY BARRAFORD Hilary is a Boston-‐born actor and host living in Los Angeles with a day job in Vernon (where she met Duke) and a soft spot for animals that can’t fight for themselves. She grew up with a Cocker Spaniel named Buffy, six cats, two hamsters and a guinea pig. Learn more at www.hilarybarraford.com. ● www.M4PR.com ●
