celebrating amy! - Amy Johnson Festival
CELEBRATING AMY!
A Moth for Amy is all about giving Amy Johnson, Hull’s
aviation heroine, the recognition she deserves. As part of
the Amy Johnson Festival, A Moth for Amy will mark the
75th Anniversary of her tragic and untimely death and
bring her remarkable life to the attention of people across
the city, the region, the country and the world! Our festival
of the arts and engineering will celebrate this wonderful
woman and her amazing achievements. Through A Moth
for Amy you can play your part in the festival.
A Moth for Amy takes flight over summer 2016.
Brought to you by the team who created the
hugely successful Larkin with Toads, A Moth for
Amy will see myriad decorated moths appear
across Hull, the East Riding of Yorkshire,
key locations across England – and
along Amy’s flight-path to Australia!
These beautiful sculptures will
bring curious glances and happy
smiles to visitors and
residents alike.
INVITATION TO SPONSORS
A Moth for Amy is a flagship event in the Amy
Johnson Festival. The festival will celebrate
Amy’s life, achievements and legacy with
an ambitious programme of the arts and
engineering appealing to all interests and ages.
Help us bring Amy Johnson to life through this
mass participation project, a true flight of the
imagination. As a sponsor of a beautiful, artist
decorated Moth for Amy, you will have a unique
opportunity to showcase your company’s brand
and services. As Larkin with Toads proved, this
will be a creative magnet for media attention,
attracting tens of thousands of local, regional
and national visitors. A Moth for Amy will make a
significant contribution to the economic, cultural
and social life of the area, increasing footfall for
businesses and visitor numbers to retail areas
and tourism attractions.
The inspiration for the project is the de Havilland
Gipsy Moth aeroplane, in which Amy Johnson
made her epic solo flight to Australia in 1930.
The moth sculptures, created
from a master design by local
sculptor, Saffron Waghorn, and
developed in Hull by Ideal Standard, will
have a wingspan of almost 1.5m. We will invite
artists from across the country and beyond to
submit design ideas for decorating a moth. As a
sponsor you will be able to view these designs
on-line and select your favourite. Alternatively
you may choose to nominate a community group
to work with an artist to develop their own
design.
The Moths will be revealed in their new habitats
on Friday 1 July 2016, Amy Johnson’s birthday,
and stay in place for several months. A Moth
Map will encourage visitors and residents
to discover the sculptures and explore the
cityscape of Hull and the landscape of East
Yorkshire. The illustrated guide to Amy’s Moths
will be a treasured souvenir.
The event will conclude with a grand auction.
The proceeds of the auction and Moth sales will
support local arts projects and Hull and East
Yorkshire charities through our partnership with
HEY Smile Foundation.
If you have fallen in love with your sponsored
Moth, you will have the option to buy it prior
to auction.
