Rabbi’s Message
CELEBRATING A GREAT AMERICAN AND HIS DREAM
Dear Friends,
I write these lines as our country continues to be
rocked by the decision of two grand juries not to
indict police officers who took the lives of unarmed
African-American men in the line of duty. This is a
deeply troubling occurrence. Many Americans
clearly feel that something needs to change in our
country.
I believe that the person from whom we can
learn necessary lessons is the late Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was the spokesperson for
his generation of African-Americans. But he
transcended that description – he became the
spokesperson for non-violent and necessary
change in our country. I believe that he was a
great American. He crossed the lines that divide
us. Dr. King not only faced down the water hoses
and oppressive forces in the South. He also spoke
up on behalf of freedom for the Jews of the Soviet
Union. He taught us lessons about our humanity.
We need to make his dream our own.
The annual Martin Luther King service in
Peekskill is an opportunity for us to come together
to re-commit ourselves to that dream. This year the
service will take place on Monday, January 19 at 2
PM at the Peekskill Middle School.
During the preceding week we will again have
the opportunity to participate in service projects that
will unite and benefit our community. We will be
able to work hand in hand with members of our
diverse community for the common good. I hope
you will join me in those projects. More information
will be coming out soon about these opportunities.
Members of PAPA (Peekskill Area Pastors
Association) will also be exchanging pulpits on the
Shabbat/Sunday prior to or following the service.
We will welcome Rev. Stephany Graham, Pastor of
the Peekskill Presbyterian Church, on Saturday,
January 24 during Shabbat Services. Rev. Graham
has become a leader in our community in a wide
array of programs and is a respected force for good
in Peekskill. I hope you will join with me in
welcoming her back to First Hebrew.
I will be speaking at Pastor Graham’s church,
705 South St. in Peekskill, at 10 am on Sunday,
January 18. I would be gratified if you would join
me there that day. Let’s show the members of our
community that we truly are committed to working
together to make Dr. King’s and Pastor Graham’s
vision our own. We have a wonderfully diverse
community in the Peekskill area. There is so much
good that happens here.
Please join with me during this month for these
exceptional opportunities to band with our fellow
members of faith communities to together become
an unstoppable force for justice and good in our
home town.

2 Great Courses for Teens
First Hebrew is joining with the Hebrew
Congregation of Somers, Temple Beth Am of
Yorktown and Temple Beth Shalom of Mahopac
and the Westchester Jewish Teen Learning
Initiative (WJTLI) to offer two courses in the winter
and spring of 2015. The locations will rotate among
the 4 congregations.
Krav Maga – Israeli Self Defense. Jan. 11, 25,
Feb. 1 and 8. This is a very popular course in
learning the Israeli techniques for self-defense.
January 2015
Teens & Sexuality. 4 Sundays in March and
April. The course creates a safe space for teens to
discuss this important topic, including LGBTQ and
Allies and how we can all be inclusive of all people.
As a group in a relaxed and engaging atmosphere
we will explore together how to discuss sexuality
issues with peers and romantic partners and look at
Jewish values related to healthy sexuality.
Trained facilitators will lead each class. More
information about the fee and registration will be
forthcoming.

President’s Message
By now, most of you have read Rabbi Paskind’s
letter announcing his retirement as our Rabbi at the
end of this contract year in August. We are
extremely grateful for the Rabbi’s great dedication
and service over the past seven years – no one has
worked harder than he to heal and then grow our
community. His pastoral services to our members
were particularly noteworthy, and his service to
PAPA and the greater Peekskill community –
particularly in the realm of social action – was
exemplary, a great credit to our Congregation.
The Board of Trustees is pleased that Rabbi
Paskind has accepted our offer to continue serving
our community for an additional year in the role of
our Rabbi Emeritus. In that role, the Rabbi will
focus particularly on our selection of, and transition
to, a new Rabbi, and will be available to consult
with us and with our new Rabbi during Rabbi
Paskind’s tenure as Rabbi Emeritus. Although after
August Rabbi Paskind will no longer conduct
religious services regularly, act as principal of our
religious school, or perform pastoral duties, he will
be available (subject to any other demands on his
time) to conduct life cycle activities for our
membership until a new rabbi takes office.
Looking forward, the Board of Trustees and I
are in the process of organizing a Rabbi search
committee. We hope to have our new Rabbi in
office by August, but we are resolved to continue
our search until we find a good match for our
community even if it means delaying the selection
into 2016. At the same time, we are beginning a
process to explore who we are, and who we want
to be, as a community. The Board of Trustees
have adopted a mission statement for our
Congregation, and the discussion of how we want
to be positioned in the next five to ten years is an
integral part of the process of creating a mission
statement for our community. In this process, we
will afford ample opportunities for our membership
to join in the discussions regarding the future of our
Congregation, and welcome all of your constructive
views.
All well-run organizations must seriously and
meaningfully consider these issues periodically –
truly an organization must continue to grow and
evolve, or it will perish. Our focus on our brand and
our future is a completely natural thing. Thankfully,
our finances are acceptable (not great in some
respects, but not a cause for concern). And we
continue to have a dedicated cadre of members
coming to services, working at bingo and attending
our functions. But, we must grab our future, and
seize any reconfiguration and redirection that will
make us even stronger and better over the short
and long terms. A challenge, no doubt, but
something to be approached with great anticipation
and dedication, not tribulation, resistance, or
reluctance. We need, and intend, to remain a vital,
responsive and responsible part of your lives and
community for the next hundred years!
Please stay tuned, and contribute to our efforts
when you are approached for your input. Thank
you all!

Message from the Men’s Club
The Men's Club will be having their annual
breakfast at the downtown synagogue on Sunday
January 11th at 9 AM. For those who have been
fortunate enough to attend services in the past
years they realize how special they are. The
downtown synagogue has been around for over
100 years and is truly a remarkable place. We
encourage all members to participate in helping to
prepare breakfast as well as daven in the
downtown schul. This will also be a great way to
start the new calendar year. We would also like to
wish everyone a happy new year and encourage
participation in our events for the coming year.

Sisterhood…Women Enjoying Jewish Life
Happy 2015! We have just celebrated another
type of New Year. And as for celebrating, we are
preparing to celebrate another Sisterhood Shabbat
this month. This is always a welcome event and
one to which we welcome the entire First Hebrew
community. We work for months to organize and
prepare for this one Shabbat morning. We know
that many other Sisterhoods around the country
(even in Canada) are doing the same. This day
allows us all to share our joy of Shabbat and
Judaism with each other and with the congregation.
So we do hope you will all join us at Shabbat
morning services on Saturday, January 17th at 9:30
AM. Come and support us as we worship together
and then stay for a wonderful Kiddush lunch.
Traditionally, at this time of year, we also ask all
the members of our First Hebrew community to
help us support victims of domestic violence by
donating new, unused small or travel sized toiletries
so that we can create “First Night” packages for
women who have just left abusive situations.
Often, they leave their homes with nothing but the
clothes on their backs. We ask you to be
generous with your donations. Maybe you travelled
during the holidays or received some bath and
Get Well
body products not quite to your taste. These items
would be perfect for this project. Please make sure
the items are new and unused. Sisterhood
supplies some of the items we need but we do rely
on you, the FHC community, to help us supply the
rest. You can drop off your items in the donation
box in the upstairs coat closet at the main lobby.
We will meet on Sunday, January 25th to
prepare the “First Night” packages. For the last
several years, our packages and the Tzedakah
collected at the meeting have gone to Hope’s Door.
Hope’s Door is a local non-profit organization
serving our community by offering assistance to
victims of domestic violence including shelter
services, legal advocacy, children’s programs, teen
prevention programs, and community education
among other programs. I hope you will join us in
making this a very successful day. Breakfast will
begin at 9:15 and the program will begin at 10 AM.
We look forward to seeing you all for both of these
events.
Shalom and stay warm!

Lay Chaplaincy Program
January 2015
Volunteer lay chaplains at Hudson Valley Hospital
Center are very dedicated individuals who give
their time to serve members of our region receiving
treatment at the hospital. They are devoted to
helping others in time of need. This is a wonderful
mitzvah and service to the community. If you are
interested please contact Tonja Inlaw at
914.734.3244. Spiritually mature and
compassionate individuals will receive training for
visiting and comforting patients from diverse
backgrounds at the hospital.

Kehilataynu Editorial Policy and Publishing Information
The synagogue bulletin is a place not only for
news and information about FHC and its members,
but also a forum for members to place information
that may be of interest to their fellow congregants.
We are happy to consider all articles submitted to
Kehilataynu; however, we reserve the right to edit
for style, and length. In addition, all articles
submitted by FHC members are labeled as such
and do not reflect the opinion of FHC or the Board
of Trustees.

Please keep the following in mind:
Articles and announcements must be received in the FHC
office by the date below.
Please submit your article or announcement via e-mail to
[email protected]. If you do not have a computer, and/or
your submission is not available in digital format, you may fax,
mail, or deliver your (typed) submission(s) to the temple office.
Please provide original copies of flyers and photos (faxed
copies are not suitable for reproduction) — they will be returned
Let Everyone Know How
Proud We are of Our Children!
The Board of Education would like to honor our wonderful Bar/Bat
Mitzvah students in a special way!
We would like each student to submit a brief biography (5-7
sentences) to be placed in the synagogue bulletin. The biography
could include information such as their Bar/BatMitzvah date,
grade, school, outside interests, and should include a short
description about his/her service project; you may also include a
photograph if you like. The responsibility to write and submit this
information belongs to the family of the child. Please do not cause
unnecessary disappointment for your children when they don’t see
their names in the bulletin with their classmates. The biography
must be submitted to the editor SIX WEEKS prior to the first day
of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah month to ensure placement in a timely
fashion. Any articles sent after that time will be placed in the next
bulletin, which may be after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date. Please
submit the biography to the bulletin at bulletin@ FirstHebrew.org
or you can mail or fax to the FHC office.
