Vol. 9 Issue # 1
From the Desk of Rabbi Blatt:
There is something hopeful and encouraging about
starting a new year. It gives us the opportunity to leave
the mistakes of the past behind and look forward to the
promise of a better tomorrow. In addition to the new year
we just celebrated on January 1st, the Jewish community
commemorates the first of four “new years” in the Hebrew
calendar on Tu B’Shevat, which falls on January 25th.
This so-called “new year for trees” or “Jewish arbor
day” has taken on added significance in recent years as
our society becomes more concerned with environmental issues. There
seems to be an upswing in our collective realization that we must protect
and preserve our forests, one of nature’s greatest natural resources. This
awareness of the importance of plants and trees is not new to the Jewish
community. It goes back thousands of years and is described in the Torah
itself:
“For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land…a land
of wheat and barley, of vines, figs and pomegranates, a land of
olive trees and honey.” Deuteronomy 8:7-8
With the biblical acknowledgement that the bounty of the land is a divine
blessing, the Israelites established a system of donating ten per cent of their
crops to support the priestly class of Kohanim and Levites, a process known
as tithing. Honoring the restrictions on harvesting that are stipulated in the
Book of Leviticus 19:23-25, the produce of newly planted fruit trees was off
limits for consumption for the first three years; the fourth year’s fruit was dedicated to God, and only after that
were you allowed to eat the fruit. This system required keeping track of the age of each tree; and so, Tu B’Shevat,
that is, the fifteenth day of the Hebrew month of Shevat, became the birthday for trees and the date in which each
tree was considered to have aged another year.
Office Hours
Monday-Friday ...9:00 am – 1:00 pm
The office will be closed
January 1 and 18
Following the destruction of the ancient Jewish homeland and the exile of our people imposed by the Romans
in the year 70 CE, the practice of dating trees became irrelevant. Nevertheless, the celebration of Tu B’Shevat
was revived in the 16th century by the kabbalists, a group of Jews whose mystical beliefs based upon rabbinical
teachings encompassed esoteric interpretations of the Hebrew Scriptures. The highlight of their observance was
the Tu B’Shevat seder, which dealt with the spiritual significance of fruits and the shivat ha’minim, the seven
species mentioned in the bible.

(Rabbi’s message continued from page 1)
The seder service has enjoyed renewed interest and
relevance of late, as the seven species are abundantly
grown and harvested in the modern State of Israel. We
will hold our Tu B’Shevat seder on Sunday, January 24th
at 11:00 a.m. In conjunction with our seder, we have
invited the Saratoga Olive Oil Company to join our
celebration by presenting an olive oil tasting, followed
by a light nosh. We hope the entire congregation will
join us as we commemorate this ancient tradition that
has enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the modern era.
Sincerely,
Please join the congregation on
Friday, January 15th at 7:30 p.m.

Re-dedicates Our Menorah
and Receives Antique Mezuzah
A very special celebration was held on Sunday,
November 22nd, when we re-dedicated our 8-foot bronze
exterior menorah. The menorah originally hung on our old
synagogue building, located at 260 Broadway in Saratoga
Springs. (Palio Communications owns and occupies the
building now.) Carol Korfin, a member at that time,
explained that there was a contest to design something for the exterior of the building.
Quite a few people submitted drawings, but Carol has always thought she won because she
incorporated her design to the exact measurements of the space as measured by her husband
Harvey—hence her menorah was chosen. In attendance at the event were Dr. Robert and
Doris Pletman along with their son Michael. Most generously, the Pletmans donated the
menorah in memory of Doris’ mom Sadye Brown in 1976. Doris spoke extensively about her
family, their love of their synagogue and Saratoga Springs. A plaque acknowledges the gift.
The restoration was made possible by a generous grant from
The Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust. Established to benefit
nonprofit organizations that serve scientific, medical, educational,
cultural, religious and
charitable purposes, the
Trust funds projects and
programs in memory
of Alfred Z. Solomon, a
leader in the fashion industry, a horse racing enthusiast and a philanthropist
in Gansevoort, NY and New York City. A second plaque was installed to
recognize the grant as the refurbishment is a huge source of pride for us.
Fisher’s Fabrication & Metal Art in Hagaman, NY, removed the extremely
heavy piece from the building and had it sandblasted, primed, spray-painted,
clear-coated and remounted. Fisher’s constructed a new furnace for powder
coating that would accommodate the menorah.
This is an advanced method of applying a decorative
and protective finish. The process is a mixture
of finely ground particles of pigment and resin,
which is sprayed electrostatically onto a surface
to be coated. The charged powder particles
adhere to the electrically grounded surfaces. Once
powdered the product is then put into a curing oven and heated. As the fine powder particles
fuse into a smooth coating, the result is a uniform, durable, high quality and attractive finish.
The powder coating is one of the most economical, long-lasting and color durable quality finishes
available. It will be more resistant to chipping, scratching, fading and wear than other finishes
while being environmentally friendly.
The other memorable component of the celebration occurred when Sam Sigel
came with his son Donald and daughter-in-law Bette. Sam presented the synagogue
with a mezuzah from 1897 that hung on one of the doors of our original synagogue
which was located on Broadway where The Saratoga Hilton stands now.

Documentary Film: SUKKAH CITY
January 17, 2016 at 3:00 p.m.
Albany Jewish Community Center
340 Whitehall Road, Albany, NY
When best-selling author Joshua Foer began to build his
first sukkah, he wanted to move beyond the generic plywood
boxes and canvas tents that have become the unimaginative
status quo. He discovered that while the bible outlines the
basic parameters for what a sukkah should look like and
how it should function, it leaves plenty of room for variation
and interpretation. Foer thought, what if contemporary
architects and designers were challenged to design and
construct twelve radical sukkahs? What would they come
up with? And so was born the design competition and
exhibition known as "Sukkah City." The film tracks the
competition from jury day, as an all-star cast of architects,
academics and critics debate the merits of the 600
submissions; to the construction, installation and exhibition
of the twelve winning structures in Union Square in the heart
of New York City; and the critical and popular response of
some of the 200,000 New Yorkers who attended the two-day
exhibition.
