Dear 2012 Summer Graduates and Fall Graduation Candidates:
Commencement Program
Congratulations Roadrunners—the first
classes to graduate since we officially became
Metropolitan State University of Denver on
July 1, 2012!
Processional
You are about to embark on a new phase in your life,
which is why this ceremony is called “commencement.”
The word literally means “beginning.” Yes, you have
finished your formal studies at MSU Denver, but you
are also launching a new identity as the holder of a
university bachelor’s or master’s degree.

This is no small thing. In addition to the fact that
individual earnings closely correlate with educational
attainment, research shows that university graduates
tend to enjoy higher levels of job satisfaction and
better health, ensure their children are better prepared
to attend school, volunteer more in the community and
are more likely to vote.
Your achievement today benefits not just you and your family, but also society as a
whole. Through individualized learning and professional experiences, your MSU Denver
education has uniquely positioned you to meet the complex challenges of the 21st century,
while also equipping you to contribute more fully to the workforce, the education of your
family and the health of our community.
That’s the power of education: Whether you start a business, accept a promotion, begin
a new career or pursue further studies, your MSU Denver education will touch others—
through the creation of jobs, your greater efficacy, and your additional skills and wisdom.
The education you’ve worked so hard for belongs to you and to everyone you influence
and inspire.
This ceremony marks the beginning of your next chapter, just as your alma mater has
begun another chapter in its evolution. Use the goodwill of this day to fulfill the promise
of your MSU Denver degree—made even more valuable with our university status—by
employing the persistence, work ethic and determination that earned you this diploma.
Spread the word about the importance of higher education as you see its rewards unfold
in your life. And please stay in touch with your scrappy, forward-thinking alma mater.
Once a Roadrunner, always a Roadrunner.
Wishing you the best of luck,

Commencement Speaker:
Outstanding Fall Graduate:
Shawn C. Worthy, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Human Services
Metropolitan State University of Denver
Patrick J. Kuretich
Bachelor of Science,
Electrical Engineering Technology
With a broad sweep of interests, expertise and
community involvement, Associate Professor
Shawn Worthy brings a rich background to his work
at MSU Denver, where he taught his first class in
1995. He teaches courses in family function and
dysfunction, multicultural counseling and crisis
intervention, among other topics.
Worthy’s student-centered approach to teaching
blends theory with practice, and his interest in
developing community partnerships provides
students with experiences that will make them
workforce-ready while helping others succeed.
For instance, the READY program is a weeklong
job preparation program for young adults who have
faced significant challenges in their lives that he
and one of students designed at the request of the
Denver Mayor’s Office of Economic Development.
Worthy says that there are many “diamonds in the rough” at MSU Denver—students who
don’t realize their potential—and he loves being able to help them along the path to their
own achievements. This commitment is why he has received the President’s Award for
Outstanding Teacher and the Roadrunner Faculty Leadership Award, among others.
In addition to teaching, he has served as chair of the Human Services Department,
director of campus-wide mentoring and the Summer Bridge Program and, in 2006-07,
as interim vice president of student services.
A clinical psychologist, Worthy specializes in family dynamics, high-risk youth studies, and
teen suicide and crisis intervention. In this role, he has worked at other local institutions,
including Children’s Hospital, where he conducted individual, family and group therapy
for hospital clients infected with HIV and served as on-call emergency department clinician
for the hospital’s Department of Psychiatry. At the Mental Health Corporation of Denver
and Urban League of Metropolitan Denver, he conducted psychotherapy with traditionally
underserved populations affected by HIV/AIDS. He has worked as the sports psych
consultant for the Vail Snow Sports School for the past 10 years. He takes particular
pride in his participation in the Denver Foundation’s Inclusiveness Project, which aims
to increase racial and economic diversity in Denver’s nonprofit organizations.
Worthy’s research interests include sports psychology; he has done a series of studies on
the ways high-risk athletes in extreme sports manage fear, as well as gender differences
in fear management among novice skiers. He has conducted research on domestic violence,
teen suicide and other issues related to children and families.
He holds a doctorate and a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Northern Illinois
University and a bachelor of arts in mass communication from the University of Illinois.

Patrick J. Kuretich graduates today with highest
honors—summa cum laude, a 4.0 GPA, ranked first
overall in the Electrical Engineering Technology
Program (EET)—and has already landed a job in his
area of interest, power systems.
These achievements didn’t come easily. Kuretich says
he didn’t do well in high school, “mostly through lack
of trying.” Living on his own since age 19, he worked
in various fields and learned that “apathy and not
working hard do not take you very far.” Developing a
strong work ethic outside school, he returned to college
at age 26 with the support of his wife, Jennifer, a
nurse, and treated school as a job.
“I worked hard in my classes and internship,” he says.
“All the cool stuff—learning advanced mathematics
and engineering and circuits and power analysis—it’s
about going home and solving quite a few problems. Solving them again, and not just
taking the answer, but really understanding what that answer means.”
He also successfully completed the challenging, eight-hour Engineering-in-Training (EIT)
exam, which entitled him to begin accruing experience to become a licensed
Professional Engineer.
Kuretich has been active in MSU Denver’s student branch of the Institute for Electrical
and Electronic Engineers, serving as chapter president for two years. He coordinated
the Engineering Technology Department’s participation in community events, including
STEMapalooza, a large fair promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics to
K-12 students. He also volunteers for the Denver Multiple Sclerosis Society.
“Patrick’s work ethic is extremely high,” wrote Richard Pozzi, the chair of the Engineering
Technology Department. “His pleasing sense of humor is refreshing and aids others in the
class to feel comfortable and ask questions... [He] is extremely creative in his solutions to
exams and homework.”
“Patrick exhibits superior intelligence as well as an ability to apply creative thinking
to problem solving,” wrote Megan Paciaroni, EET assistant professor. “Furthermore, he
possesses superior communication skills and is well liked by his peers.”
When awarded a summer internship with Ulteig Engineers, a regional company whose
Denver office designs high-voltage power systems, Kuretich applied his strong work ethic
to the internship. At summer’s end, the company gave him a letter of intent for full-time
employment upon graduation and the opportunity to work part time in the interim. He
will start at Ulteig as a graduate engineer in January.

MSU Denver— We educate Colorado
Established in 1965, Metropolitan State University of Denver enrolls 23,000 students
and educates more undergraduate Coloradans than any other institution in the state.
MSU Denver added master’s programs to its offerings in 2010 and today celebrates the
bestowal of master’s degrees from all three programs: professional accountancy, social
work and teacher education.
MSU Denver is steadfast in its mission to provide students from all walks of life with
relevant, individualized, high-quality academics leading to degrees that prepare them for
rewarding careers, postgraduate education and lifelong learning in a multicultural, global
and technological society. With diversity as a core value, MSU Denver is proud to enroll more
students of color and educate more of these students in the STEM fields (science, technology,
engineering and mathematics) than any other four-year institution in Colorado.
As an urban land-grant institution located in the heart of the state’s largest metropolitan
area, MSU Denver brings its resources and roll-up-your-sleeves ethic to a myriad of
partnerships that impact our community. For example, the Colorado Health Foundation
chose MSU Denver to operate the Colorado Center for Medical Laboratory Science, and
the Denver Hispanic Chamber Education Foundation asked Political Science Professor
Norman Provizer to design a leadership development program. MSU Denver is also
partnering with Denver Public Schools in a federally funded program to recruit and
train never-before teachers to fill critical classroom needs in DPS.
MSU Denver students are making their mark in competitions against their peers at other
institutions. For instance, the Precision Flight Team has recently qualified for the national
SAFECON competition for the third year in a row. At last year’s event, they brought home
the Loening Trophy, a prestigious national award given to the best collegiate aviation
program in the country. And our Ethics Bowl team recently qualified to compete in the
nationals by besting CU Boulder in the final round of the regional competition.
With the addition of these 1,700 members of the Summer and Fall Classes of 2012, there
are now more than 73,700 proud MSU Denver alumni, 75 percent of whom remain in
Colorado. They help fuel the state’s economy by running businesses, contributing in the
nonprofit sector, teaching our children, serving in government at all levels and more.
And, they are achieving their dreams. For instance, Jim Saccomano is vice president
of corporate communications for the Denver Broncos and David Thibodeau is president
and co-owner of the immensely successful Ska Brewery in Durango. Graduates outside
Colorado are making a name for themselves as well. For instance, Brigadier General
Laura Jane Richardson (’86, psychology) has joined an elite group of only 29 women to
have achieved that top-level rank.
The accomplishments of our students and graduates, and the better lives that education
brings them, create an undeniable influence that resonates from the Auraria Campus to
all four of Colorado’s corners and beyond.

Academic Attire
Academic Colors
Academic attire is modeled after monks’
clothing from the Middle Ages, when college
faculty and students were members of
religious orders. In England, the faculty of
many colleges and universities still wear
gowns, hoods and caps in the classroom.
Master’s Degree Hood Colors
Honor Societies
Business (MPAcc) – Drab
Social Work (MSW) – Citron
Education (MAT) – Light Blue
Accounting Honor Society – Royal blue cord
In the early 20th century, colleges and
universities throughout the world adopted
guidelines for the design and colors of
academic attire. An institution may
design and register special attire for its
administrators and graduates, but it
must conform to certain standards. Once
registered, the design/color combination
may not be duplicated by other institutions.
The bachelor’s gown is most often black
and has long sleeves that taper to a point in
the back. It is always worn closed. At MSU
Denver, women do not wear a white collar with
the gown. The hood worn by the President’s
Award recipient is an MSU Denver bachelor’s
degree hood and is worn by this student to
represent the graduating class.
The gown signifying the master’s degree is also usually black and may be worn open or
closed. It features oblong sleeves that hang below the wrist, tapering to a square cut with
a cutaway arc.
Although usually black, the doctoral gown is sometimes seen in colors—usually gold,
purple, blue or red. The gown may be worn open or closed. The opening of the gown is
faced with velvet and three velvet chevrons run across its bell-shaped sleeves. The velvet
facing and chevrons may be black or the color representing the field of study.
The hood varies in length and shape according to the degree it represents—the shortest
and smallest signifies the bachelor’s degree and the longest and widest signifies the
doctoral degree. The velvet bordering the hood represents the degree field of study.
The satin lining of the hood, each a specific design, represents the college or university
at which the individual earned his or her degree.
The Oxford Cap, or mortarboard as it is better known, completes the attire. In place of
the hood, bachelor’s candidates at MSU Denver wear colored tassels on the Oxford Cap
to represent the academic department of the University from which they earned their
degrees. Those holding graduate degrees usually wear black tassels, but those holding
doctoral degrees may wear tassels of gold thread, and may elect to wear a four-sided or
eight-sided velvet tam instead of the Oxford Cap. Some universities have designated the
Cambridge Cap, a large, soft beret, for their administrators and those who have earned
a doctoral degree at that institution.
President Stephen Jordan is wearing the University’s chain of office, a visible symbol of
his authority as the institution’s leader.

the neck of their gowns to represent high
academic achievement. Those graduates
who have achieved overall excellence are
recognized by the University through three
areas of distinction:

The University encourages students to enroll
in and complete an especially rigorous course
of interdisciplinary study in addition to the
individual’s major and minor study degree
requirements. This course of study is known
as the Honors Program.
