One of Phil’s rebuilt Bechstein Grands
was selected for this performance at the
Derby Playhouse.
The Director Stephen Edwards had been

Tuning & Servicing
Repairs & Rebuilding
looking for a concert quality grand of the
period, for the two concert pianists
Christian McKay (Shostakovich) & Terry
Mortimer (Prokofiev) to play live on stage
during the performance.
After many months searching he was put
in touch with Phil. Whilst assessing the
piano he left the stool walked round the
piano sat down again and uttered, “This is
totally surreal. It’s a new piano in an old
case. Every thing I’ve been looking for and
almost given up hope of ever finding”.
In his role as a concert piano tuner technician,
Phil has tuned pianos for celebrity’s such as the
Bee Gee’s, Neil Sedaka and Sir Elton John.
Amongst many others.
Phil’s personal Rönish Grand, was used
by BBC Wales in the production of
Benjamin Britons opera The Turning of
the Screw and broadcast on BBC TV.
The piano was required to perform as a
concert instrument, yet look as
authentic for the period as possible.

When the action rails become cracked it results in poor tonal
production and uneven touch.
The new rails have a thicker brass cross section and are much
firmer than the original giving a more precise touch and greater
tonal range.
Phil has developed a technique for replacing and drilling these
action rails for the various scales of Steinway grand’s and the
old K upright’s.

The greatest accolades of Phil’s work
came from:FU TS’ONG, one of the world’s greatest pianists.
After playing one of Phil’s Steinway rebuilds, he
phoned Phil personally to congratulate him.
NIKOLAI DEMIDENKO, after playing another
Steinway concert grand (rebuilt, tuned & voiced by
Phil) at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham.
He actually kissed the piano, and was astounded by
the evenness of the touch & tonal response.
Bass Strings Service
Phil has developed his
own method of restoring
the crown on the
soundboard which
restores the original
tone of the piano.
This was highlighted by Fu Ts’ong when he
congratulated Phil on the rebuilding of Alexandra
Zoltowska’s Steinway D concert grand.
In 1969 Phil Taylor designed
and built his own bass
stringing machine, and with
new improved technology,
is still spinning high quality
bass strings today for the
Music Trade.
In 1982 Phil was the first
person in the Country to
write his own computer
program for calculating his
bass strings.
This he followed by writing
a further computer program
for rescaling pianos.
To produce the tone, the action needs to respond to
every nuance of touch.
Phil’s action restoration work has gained accolades from
Julious Drake, Frank Wibaut, Fu Ts’ong and everyone
who’s played the Bosendorfer piano’s at the Royal
Concert Hall, where he has rebuilt the action’s on both
pianos.
