MONTS-VALIN
From atop its 984 metres, Parc national des
Monts-Valin dominates the landscape of the
Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Speckled
trout fishing and canoeing are favourite
activities in a multitude of the park’s lakes
and rivers. As an alternative to canoeing,
stand-up paddling is an original way to explore
the twists and turns of Rivière Valin. In the
fall, hiking is in the spotlight. Enjoy a day
on the trails or some backpacking with hut
accommodations. With exceptional snow
cover, winter turns this territory into an ideal
spot for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing.
Featured
La baie d’Alexis
There is a new hub of accommodations and activities
in the heart of Mont Valin nordicity! On a high plateau
dominated by boreal forest, the Baie Alexis sector
sits at 650 m in altitude beside Lac aux Canots, a
beautiful lake nestled between mountains and hills.
Here you’ll find 3 EXP cabins, 3 Nature cabins and
the Antoine-Dubuc Lodge. In the summer you can
reach the Baie d’Alexis sector by car along Chemin du
Bras-des-Canots and in winter you can get there on a
tracked vehicle.
pic de la Hutte
The trail leads to a unique view of the Saguenay–
Lac-Saint-Jean. At the top of the mountain,
wooden walkways protect this fragile environment
where small trees share space with arctic-alpine
plants. In summer and fall you can easily get there
by driving to a parking lot just a 1.5 km-walk from
several lookouts and warming huts. Others can
decide to climb the 670 vertical metres from the
Visitors Centre along the Tête-de-Chien trail.
Land of the Mummies
Pic de la Hutte has a great reputation for fall hiking,
but is still relatively unknown as a winter destination.
A warming hut near the original location of La Hutte
was built in 2010. The passenger transportation
service has been revised to now offer two
destinations: Vallée des Fantômes and Land of the
Mummies, the ultimate destination for encounters
with these strange creatures. Check out possible
routes for a memorable day on the mountain trails!

HIKING THE PEAKS
This scenic trail was created to provide access to the
peaks that dominate the park’s magnificent scenery.
With a vertical drop of 755 meters and a total length
of 22 kilometres (one way), Les Pics trail crosses the
entire park. If you want to hike for a few days, you can
book Le Pionnier, Le Antoine -Dubuc and Le Fantôme
shelter.

DAY FISHING
Nature exhibits exemplary equilibrium,
and for this reason the feeding of
wildlife is prohibited. in this respect, it is
also prohibited to leave food or garbage
unsupervised. keep them in your car.
Cast your line for the day and try your luck with
speckled trout! The lakes designated for day fishing are
Lac Antoine, Lac Culotte and Lac Martin-Valin. Several
boats are available for these lakes. Personal boats are
only allowed on Lac Martin-Valin. Accommodations
packages are also offered from June 13 to July 13.

If you run across a park warden, ask about the impacts
of altitude on fauna and flora. Did you know that there
are ten or so blueberry species on the mountaintops?

Carry out your garbage, leave it in the
containers provided, and take home any
harmful substances, such as soap, oil,
combustibles or pesticides.

Explore the twists and turns of Rivière Valin on a
stand up paddle board. Originally designed for calm
waters, this board is bigger and more stable than
the traditional surf board. It’s fast and easy to learn,

REVIEW OF 10 YEARS OF MONITORING
OUR PARKS ARE HEALTHY!
From day to day, the challenge of a national park manager is to ensure a balance between
public accessibility and conservation. To achieve this, in 2003, Parcs Québec developed an
innovative program for assessing the health of its national parks: the Ecological Integrity
Monitoring Program (EIMP). The results of the 370 monitoring programs conducted over the
past 10 years are encouraging. Overall, the level of ecological integrity across the national
park network is the same or better than before, despite ever-growing accessibility.

A few highlights for Parc national des Monts-Valin :
•Organisms that live on the bottom of rivers and lakes (benthic fauna) and are visible to
the naked eye, such as insects, molluscs, crustaceans and worms, are the most commonly
used to assess the overall health of aquatic environments. Since they are a food source
for several species of fish, amphibians and birds, they are considered good health indicators of aquatic ecosystems. The results of the EIMP show that the health of benthic fauna
is gradually improving.
•As a species likely to be designated threatened or vulnerable in Québec, the survival of
Robinson’s hawkweed (Hieracium robinsonii) is precarious. The change measured in the
monitoring indicator used for this species suggests an improvement in its situation, contributing to the park’s ecological integrity level. While the populations seem to be doing
better, fluctuations may also be a result of changing weather conditions.
•Parc national des Monts-Valin is increasingly a destination of choice for summer and fall
hiking. The results of the indicator on the influence of trails show that generally the park’s
trails are not widening significantly. However, the results show that the most popular
trails are slightly deteriorating. The EIMP also helps us prioritize our actions aimed at
improving accessibility infrastructures

BACKCOUNTRY
The network of backcountry skiing trails is over 71 km, and the snowshoeing network extends over
77 kilometres. These trails are marked but not groomed. Most of them can be used for both backcountry skiing
and snowshoeing. Backcountry skiing enthusiasts should prepare their routes based on availability of huts
and rustic shelters in the mountain. Book early! Several documents are available to backcountry skiers on
our Web site, including a list of suggested equipment. To get the most out of your trek into this rugged terrain,
excellent preparation is required. Baggage transportation service, Snowcat transportation and resupply
services are available to enhance your experience.

Torchlight Snowshoe
Evenings
Follow the Mirador trail by torchlight in the
company of a park warden and get an unusual
look at Mont Valin. The mountain and the
stars are simply striking against the dark
background. Upon your return from this threekilometer trek, you’ll have the pleasure of
tasting regional products and talking to
the artisans who created them.
Visit the Discovery and Visitors Centre
and see the permanent exhibit called
At the North Frontier, presenting the
main characteristics of the natural region
protected and enhanced by the park. The
model of the mountain, the herbarium and
the multimedia presentations will urge you
to take to the trails and discover the park
and its riches for yourself. The permanent
exhibition is available during the Discovery
and Visitors Centre opening hours.

by taking Le Fantôme-Express shuttle. It
departs daily from the Discovery and Visitors

This winter, discover a new place: Land of
the Mummies! Exploring the Pic-de-la-Hutte
sector is well worth the effort and will satisfy

Despite its reputation for great autumn
hiking, not many people know about the
winter pleasures of Pic de la Hutte. A
warming hut was built near the original
Hutte site in 2010. It gives excursionists a
place to warm up and admire the regional
scenery. The shuttle service schedule was
revised and improved, now offering two
destinations: in addition to the legendary
peacefulness of Vallée des Fantômes,
you can also visit Land of the Mummies,
the ultimate destination for encounters
with these strange creatures. Ask about
suggested itineraries for a memorable
day on the mountain trails!
