Savings benefits to Co-op Connections Card

Flint Energies will change
base charge, effective April 1
ffective with member billings
that begin on April 1, Flint
Energies’ basic monthly charge for
residential customers will increase
from $20 per month to $21. This
moves the service charge closer to
the true cost-of-service for residential members, which the Co-op measures today at about $30 per month
per consumer.
The increase in the basic monthly
charge will be the first step in executing an equity management
plan to increase the residential base
charge by $1 a year, to $27 per
month, by 2018. The gradual increase is an effort to move closer to
the actual cost-of-service that has been
identified in the last two rate studies.
At least one neighboring electric
utility recently made a larger leap to
a $28 per month base charge.
Flint Energies conducts a rate study
every two years to ensure that our
rates cover the costs of providing
service. The most recent rate study
looked further into the future than
past rate studies. Flint’s new wholesale power contracts will take effect
in 2015; our estimates predict that
wholesale power costs will increase
some 28 percent by then. Unfortunately,
this dramatic increase is caused by
things out of Flint’s control, such as
increased regulation and environmental requirements like pollution
control, which will be reflected in
current and future power contracts.
As a fiscally responsible electric
cooperative, Flint is looking at managing this increase now instead of
later. By gradually increasing the
basic monthly charge over the next
few years instead of significantly increasing the basic monthly charge in
a shorter amount of time, Flint will
try to soften the blow of the increase

These changes allow our Cooperative to meet financial needs and
continue to provide reliable electric
service, according to Flint CEO Bob
Ray. “Our goal is to work every
day to achieve the best operating efficiencies as we face rising power
costs. Even with the slight increase
in the basic monthly charge, the value
of electricity remains very high,”
Ray says.
Option for low-income members
Members who receive a Low Income Energy Assistance Program
(LIHEAP) check to help them pay
for electricity will be placed on
Flint’s low-income rate. Members
who confirm their LIHEAP standing
with a check payment will be eligible for a reduced base service charge
of $11, instead of $21 per month.

Members can reduce the effects of the basic monthly
charge increase on their electric bill through these
simple tasks:
1. Conduct an online energy audit at www.flintenergies.
com. Click on the Home Energy Calculator link to fill
out a simple form to calculate your energy use. By
conducting the online energy audit, you can make
small changes in your energy consumption to reduce
the amount of your electric bill. In addition, you can
receive energy savings tips via the Flint website.
2. Reducing your electric bill is as simple as changing a
lightbulb. For example, if you replace your five most
frequently used lightbulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs), you could save
approximately $60 a year in energy costs.

Connections Card
the major improvements to

Connections Card is
the new My VIP Savings program,
which gives co-op members the
chance to earn cash back on many
online purchases.
To participate, members must go to
the Co-op Connections home page
at www.connections.coop and click
on one of the My VIP Savings links.
First-time users will be prompted
to establish an account, and then
it’s on to shop at more than 1,000
merchants, including Apple, Best
Buy and Wal-Mart. Members must
enter a company’s website through
the My VIP Savings link to earn rebates, which vary by merchant. A
member can request a check once he
or she earns a minimum of $25 in
cash back rewards.
Another new development is the
Healthy Savings Discount program,
offering discounts for chiropractic,
dental and vision care, as well as lab
work and hearing aids.
“We felt the dental benefit was the
perfect program to add to the Coop Connections Card,” says Kenda
Hoffman, Vice President, Client
Benefits, at New Benefits, Touchstone Energy’s strategic partner.
Humana Dental Access offers discounts of up to 40 percent on most
services at some 100,000 providers
nationwide.
Coast to Coast Vision will enable
co-op members to save on eyewear
at national chains, including LensCrafters and Target. There are also
discounts for contact lenses and laser
eye surgery.
“If they have vision insurance, they
can use their vision insurance until
it’s exhausted, and then use the discount,” Hoffman says.
