organisation for two and a half years. I am proud
to have been instrumental in the changes the Committee has made in communication and Committee
structure over the last two years. I am pleased
that I could identify the serious problems that existed with the U3A website and talk to a website
designer to have the website reconstructed at a
very low cost to us. I thank John Hatwell, the website designer and his team, who continue to update
the website when new software is launched onto
the market. In identifying the need to improve
communication with members, I am pleased to have
suggested and brought about the division of the
Secretary’s position into two parts, the email and
the Minutes Secretaries.

courses will also be sent. However, generally, commercial products and services will not be sent to
members through U3A email.

Ross Wade holds the position of Treasurer/
Membership Officer. Ross handles membership payment, course payment, insurance payment, bill payment and the organisation of membership badges
and the Enrolment Day. This is a job that continually
has business that needs to be attended to and we
thank Ross for his devotion to the task and for devising procedures to accomplish the task smoothly.
Courses’ Co-Ordinator, Chris Graham, who has organised a timetable of thirty-two courses for U3A
members’ enrichment and enjoyment this term. It is
Chris who sometimes proposes courses to Tutors,
who take the courses on with enthusiasm. Chris
then produces the main content for the newsletter,
which is the timetable itself and the summary of
courses. The U3A Committee is justifiably proud of
the program it is able to present due to the Tutor
volunteers and their organiser, Chris Graham. Without Tutors we would have nothing. Thank you, Tutors.

continually oversees the photocopier, the air conditioner, the vacuum cleaner and will be purchasing a
new urn for the room in the near future. Thank you
for being so thorough, Vince.
John Hepburn organises our social events, so when
you attend the U3A AGM on Wednesday, 13th July,
2016, at 2 p.m. in the Alley Gallery at the Dunn Lewis
Centre, John has organised the lovely afternoon tea
and comfortable seating available for us from the
venue. Thank you, John. Thanks also go to Gayle Dunn
and the Dunn Lewis Centre for accommodating AGM,
Tea’n’Talk and several of our courses.
All of the office bearers above have nominated to
continue serving in these positions and we thank
them for their service.
Our enthusiastic Publicity Officer, Penny Stein, is
stepping down from her position, after serving for
ten years, producing newspaper articles which have
informed the local community about the courses
available to them. Penny is taking on full time work
and will not be able to help us in that position any
longer. Penny will be sorely missed by the U3A Committee, but we hope that her work will inspire someone else to serve in that position in the coming year.
John Hayes has nominated for the position of President for the coming year and, since John has served
as President before, he will fall into the overseeing
of the wonderful work that U3A does for the community with his usual composure. John has served as
Vice-President during the past six months, so is well
aware of the work that has been accomplished in
U3A this year.
I have nominated to continue to serve on the U3A
Committee as Newsletter Editor, where I enjoy presenting the newsletter in a clear and interesting way.
I have also nominated to continue Website Manager,
because I think that U3A is just what we all need to
keep us interested, entertained and in touch with
likeminded friends. It is also a source of stimulating
conversation and thought. It’s not an ending for me,
but an anticipated continuation of the work.
I wish all U3A members the best in the coming year.

Penny Stein, past U3A Publicity Officer,
Teacher’s Aide, Mother of Two and Masters National Judo Champion 2016.
It all sounds rather like Lara Croft, Tomb Raider, but
that’s a resource that has been available to U3A Milton
Ulladulla over the past ten years.
Penny stood for the position of Publicity officer in
2006 when she had one infant child. The Committee
said, “But you’re young, why do you want to serve on
this Committee? We’re all old and retired. You have to
be retired and ‘d’un certain age’ or over fifty.”
“I’ve retired from the workforce and I’m looking for
something stimulating for my mind to fill some of my
time. Why am I not eligible?” said Penny.
That’s when the Committee of U3A Milton Ulladulla
had a good look at the criteria for joining U3A and readjusted the requirements to a person’s being retired
or semi-retired, rather giving an age limit. While most
of our members remain in the older, fully retired age
group, some younger people have joined language
courses before travelling overseas or have joined other
courses for interest’s sake.
Penny has done a wonderful
job with our publicity and we
have had non-members attending events due to information
given in Penny’s newspaper articles. She leaves at a time
when there is turmoil in the
newspaper industry and when
the local Times is being edited
in New Zealand and has no local knowledge on which they
base their choices on what to
include in their publication.
We wish Penny every good fortune in her future life
and work as a mother and Teacher’s Aide.
The U3A Committee is now investigating setting up a
Facebook page on which to publicise our events as a
way to overcome publicity difficulties.
Who will replace Penny? We are looking for someone
with an interest in following our courses and with an
ability to write interesting accounts of our activities.
We are looking someone who can keep our facebook
page active and alive with a range of U3A material.

from The Great Courses’ DVD series of the same name.
It is a comprehensive survey of the 3000-year history
of Western philosophy from its origins in classical
Greece to the present day. The format is to listen to 2
lectures and then enjoy a group discussion on the content … over a cup of something. Because of the extensive nature of the subject, the course will be conducted
over a number of terms. Roy intends to issue information about each session in advance, so that participants

VENUES
The U3A Lecture room is The Harry Higgs Room in the
Milton Cultural Centre [next to the Milton Library].
Lectures are also held at other venues throughout the
area; the term newsletter and timetable contain the detail.
SUBSCRIPTIONS AND FEES
Annual Membership of Milton-Ulladulla U3A Campus is
$20, payable in January, or on joining the campus.
Fees per term are: $10 for the first course, and $5 for
the second; the third course is free.
MILTON DISTRICT BAND
The Milton and District Band is soon to
celebrate its 150 years of existence. Currently it is 18 strong, and sounds good;
but it could sound better. The Band
would eagerly welcome new players – in
particular, it would be really nice to have a
few more clarinet players. Amongst our
members there surely must be some who
have played woodwind or brass instruments in the past and who could be motivated to get back into the swing? Under
Vern Flay, the band plays tuneful, recognisable melodies from uncomplicated arrangements, and enjoys a good response
when playing out in public. Assistance

can be given to players wanting to get
