GMIT and we can count among those

areas of Arts, Catering, Business, Science and
Engineering.
GMIT has big plans for the years ahead. In 2012,
we formed a strategic partnership (the
Connacht-Ulster Alliance) with Letterkenny
Institute of Technology and Institute of
Technology, Sligo. The aim of the ConnachtUlster Alliance is to achieve Technological
University status, benefiting students and the
region as a whole.

Castlebar
Castlebar is the capital town in Mayo and a leading
sporting, tourism, shopping, cultural and
entertainment centre in the Western Region. It is host
to many multi-national and Irish companies, family
businesses and high street shops. Students can enjoy
a great social scene and take full advantage of the
busy schedule of festivals on offer throughout the
year. It is located in close proximity to Westport which
adds to its appeal as a destination. Castlebar also has
excellent transport links which makes it very
accessible to students.

Student Life
on Campus
Student life on GMIT Mayo Campus is a brilliant
experience with stimulating programmes to study, new
friends to meet and new sporting and cultural activities
to try out. Help is always available when you need it. Our
staff and your Students’ Union are here to support you
during your time with us. The following pages will give
you more information on our services and facilities to
make your time at this campus the learning experience
you will never forget.

Student Support Services at the GMIT
Mayo Campus include the following:
The Students’ Union is run by students for students.
Their office is a hive of activity during the academic
year. It is the place to go if you need to get some
advice or just hang out between classes.
Medical Service
A free health service is provided to students through
a local GP practice in Castlebar.
Counselling Service
Our counsellor offers counselling, support, help and
information to any student dealing with matters of
concern, whether personal, academic or family related.
Chaplaincy
Our chaplain provides support and advice to all
students.
Careers Advice
Our careers service offers advice on follow-on study,
job search information, Curriculum Vitae, interview
techniques, vocational testing and employer liaison.
The service also offers workshops throughout the year
on careers and counselling related matters.
As well as organising weekly social activities for
students, the Union runs many different events and
campaigns throughout the year such as a Mental
Health week. They also organise a RAG week in
February which gives students a chance to let their
hair down and take a small break from their studies.
At the start of each year the Students’ Union organise
a week of events and entertainment designed to help
students settle in and make friends.
The Students’ Union also assists students in areas
such as grants, accommodation, finance, health and
well-being.
Additional Supports
We provide additional supports to all students. Our
Access Officer will be happy to talk to you. You may
contact the Access Office on 091 742129.
Financial Help
We offer support to students experiencing financial
hardship. In addition a number of bursaries are
provided to students each year.
Sports Officer
We have a dedicated Sports Officer on campus.
Scholarships
Each year we offer a number of sports, cultural and
academic scholarships to our students. For more

number of active sports clubs in the college,
membership of these is a gateway to a whole
host of exciting activities.

Green Campus
Ireland’s First Institute of Technology Green Campus
In April 2011 GMIT Mayo Campus became the first Institute
of Technology in Ireland to be awarded the Green Flag by
An Taisce on behalf of the Foundation for Environmental
Education (FEE).
In 2014 An Taisce once again granted the campus
this international accreditation following a rigorous
re-evaluation by an expert panel of achievements
under the Green Flag themes of Energy, Litter &
Waste, Water and Biodiversity. Green Campus has
helped increase recycling by over 10 tonnes per year
diverting waste from landfill. We have also helped
introduce PC Remote Shutdown in the computer
laboratories saving 15% on energy consumption.
However, we are not just about recycling waste and
saving energy. We help students and staff realise their
Green dreams. Two projects that the Green Campus
group has helped realise and which really stand out
are the Sanctuary Garden Project and the innovative
Swift Nest Box Project.

The Moore Library
The library has a central role on campus. Students have
access to local collections of books, journals, e-resources,
past exam papers and DVDs; they also have access to the
entire collections of GMIT libraries which includes 100,000
books, 300 journals, approximately 10,000 full text e-journals,
e-books and a wide range of web based subscriptions.
Library facilities include computers, printers, photocopiers,
scanners, DVD players, a group study/training room and quiet
study areas.
Library staff support students on a one to one basis and
through group sessions; with induction at the beginning
of the year and follow up training throughout the
academic year.
Knowledge is free at the
library. Just bring your

Accommodation
Where can I live?
There are two purpose built developments in
Castlebar providing apartments for students.
These student villages are owned and run by
private operators. For more information contact:

You may also choose to rent privately or move
into “Digs”. A list of the different types of
accommodation available in Castlebar is compiled
by the Students’ Union each year. This list includes
details on partial board, flats and houses for rent.

My Erasmus Experience
Past pupil of Community School,

I took up French as one of my modules
when I started out as a first year Business
student at GMIT Mayo Campus. My
lecturer told the class that there was an
opportunity to study abroad as an
Erasmus student in Toulouse for either
three months or a full academic year.
I became very interested in the idea
of studying in a different country so
I decided to apply. I was accepted and
I studied there for a full semester. It was
my first time in Toulouse and I was
amazed at how beautiful the city was. It’s
the fourth largest city in France and it’s
also known as “Pink City” with all of its
red brick buildings. The weather was
much better than in Ireland!
I started college on Monday 3 September
and finished on 12 December. I was
studying at IUT – Université Paul Sabatier.
This college has 15 faculties and I was
placed in the Business faculty. It was an
amazing experience meeting students
from all over Europe and Asia, getting to
know them and learning about their
cultures. We used to have Erasmus
meetings and it was great to meet up
with everyone. There was plenty of social
activity in the evening. There must have
been almost 100 Erasmus students and
five of them were Irish.
I really enjoyed my Erasmus experience
and I would recommend it to anyone. You
get to learn so much about life and about
yourself. I have memories that I’ll cherish
forever.

Skills Programme About?
The Higher Certificate in Business with Administration and ICT Skills
offers students the opportunity to acquire a business qualification
combined with a high level of competence in the use of business
applications software. The programme emphasises the development
of practical IT skills, broad business knowledge and personal
communication techniques.
Graduates are capable of undertaking a wide range of administrative
functions in a hi-tech business environment. They go on to careers
in industry, financial and commercial services and the voluntary and

What Modules Will I Study?
The programme provides students with a basis in the core business
areas such as accounting, law, economics and sales and marketing.
As part of the programme, students will study core IT modules
and will also have the opportunity to select further electives in the
areas of business, programming, multimedia technology or a foreign
language. The programme will develop students’ IT skills in areas
such as website creation and database development.

I chose this programme as it
combined the fundamentals of
business as well as the latest
packages in computing/IT.
There are larger rooms
and lecture theatres for
the larger class sizes and smaller
rooms when there are smaller
classes, each equipped with
everything that is required
such as projectors. There are a
number of PC suites each fully
equipped with all applications
that are needed. There is an
excellent canteen, good library
and other spaces such as Area
15 to relax in.
What do you think of
the programme you
are studying?
I fully enjoyed first year. There
was a good mix of subjects;
with all having varying amounts
of emphasis on continuous
assessments which is beneficial
in helping students manage each
subject. The fact that lecturers
themselves give tutorials is
great.
In addition, the programme focuses on the development of personal
communication skills, self-confidence, teamwork and presentation
skills.
There is a variety of teaching and assessment methodologies used in
the delivery of the programme, including case studies, group work,
lab sessions, field trips, lectures and continuous assessment.
What Programmes Can I Study When I Finish
this Programme?
Graduates of this programme may progress to study a Bachelor
of Business or a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and Financial
Management (subject to certain elective choices) at the Mayo
Campus. Typically a large percentage of graduates progress to study

What is the Outdoor Education and Leisure
Programme About?
This programme combines skills training in adventure sports with
an understanding of the developmental and educational role of
outdoor education. You will gain a range of National Governing
Body awards in adventure sports such as rock climbing, surfing,
hill walking and kayaking. We also focus on helping you improve
your team building, communication and teaching skills. One day a
week is spent on adventure sports’ practicals in venues including
Achill, Connemara and numerous surf beaches in Mayo. There are
also weekend practical courses which provide opportunities for
specialisation in adventure sports.

This four year programme is an exciting mix of academic study
and training in adventure sports. You will work towards National
Governing Body (NGB) qualifications in a range of adventure
sports while building experience in implementing educational and
adventure tourism programmes. You will build an understanding
of the developmental role of outdoor education and explore
and examine the Irish landscape, heritage and ecology. Mayo’s
mountains and wild Atlantic coast provide an ideal location for this
programme of study.
This programme is 4 years duration and comprises of five core
subject areas and one elective subject. The core areas are:
• The Natural and Cultural Landscape
• Psychology and Teaching/Facilitation
• Safety and First Aid
• Research
• Adventure Sports Strand – which includes kayaking (river and
sea), rock climbing, surfing, sailing, snorkelling, hillwalking,
caving, orienteering, windsurfing, mountain biking and outdoor

What is the General Nursing Programme About?
General nursing involves caring for people of all ages both in
hospital and community care settings. This programme will give
you the knowledge and skills you need to work as a general nurse
both in Ireland and other countries. You will spend time in class and
in our specially built clinical skills labs. What is great about this is
that when you go on your student placement you will be prepared
to deal with the daily challenges of caring for patients. Students
usually do their work placements in the Mayo/Roscommon/Galway
region.
In fourth year you will undertake a thirty-six week paid internship,
where you will gain more valuable practical experience. We also give
you time each week when you can take time out from work to think
and reflect on your work experience.
NOTE: Practice placements are facilitated largely in the Mayo,
Roscommon and Galway region and may require periods of
travel or residency outside of the Castlebar area.

About?
Psychiatric nursing involves caring for people of all ages and

I was lucky to get the
opportunity to partake in two
volunteer trips to Tanzania
where I worked with street
kids coaching soccer, teaching
English in a primary school and
teaching some music. When I
returned from Tanzania I chose
the Applied Social Studies
programme in GMIT Mayo
Campus as I felt it would give
me a good platform to build
a future career working with
migrants and young people in
Ireland.
What do you think of the

The programme gives you a very
broad qualification from which you
can specialise at a later date if you
so wish. The programme includes work
placement in 2nd and 3rd year which
I feel is invaluable and gives great
hands on experience in potential

What is the Information Technology Programme
About?
If you have an interest in how computers work, if you like solving
Information Technology (IT) problems and enjoy working with
people using computers then this recently updated programme
exploring how computer systems work is for you. On graduating
you will have the necessary skills to:
