Reality Check
Youth Action Against
Tobacco Use
Each day, more than 3,200 people under 18
smoke their first cigarette, and approximately
2,100 youth and young adults become daily
smokers. 9 out of 10 smokers start before the
age of 18, and 98% start smoking by age 26.
Smoking is still the leading preventable cause of
death in the United States, killing 480,000
people each year.
Tobacco companies spend $1,000,000 per hour
to market their deadly products and prey on
minorities and low income areas.
Reality Check works towards decreasing the social acceptability of tobacco use.
• Are you interested in making a difference
in your community & city?
The JCC contracts with a local vendor to provide a
Driver Education program for new drivers 16 years
and older. The class meets at the Bernikow JCC for
classroom work and is provided with in-car classes.
Students receive a professionally taught Driver Education course that will provide a comprehensive
introduction to the driving experience. This will
include: rules of the road, traffic safety concerns,
defensive driving, proper handling of a vehicle,
driving in traffic and problems of substance abuse
as related to driving. Students must successful
complete both the road and theory portions of the
course in order to receive a MV 285, formerly
known as the Blue Card. For more information call

With a wide array of both social and developmental
activities, children are engaged by professionallysupported trained staff to create some of the best
memories of their summer.
The Special Needs Department has a Special Needs
committee which is comprised of professionals and
family members of those with disabilities.
The committees act as a resource for both individuals with mental and physical disability in assisting
to develop policies, collaborative programs, community outreach, and referrals of individuals and
professionals. For more information on joining or
supporting our committees, please contact Yoni
(Jonathan) Wiesel, MSW at 718-475-5291 or via

CONNECT-TO-RECOVERY
- A Time to Build
JCC DART
(Disaster Assistance Response Team)
Once the first responders alleviate the immediate
danger of the disaster, JCC DART assists families
through the recovery process. Our role starts after
the immediate danger has passed. Our services
include distribution/collection of emergency
supplies and crisis intervention. There is no eligibility requirement to receive JCC DART services
other than being impacted by a disaster.
Donate
In order to insure that JCC DART is always prepared to respond to disaster, we are collecting the
following items on an on-going basis:
first aid kits
flashlights
batteries
diapers
blankets
shovels
brooms
trash bags
work gloves
latex gloves
masks
bleach
buckets
generators
heaters
dehumidifiers
wet/dry vacs
blowers
plastic bins with covers
JCC DART collection bins are located at the Joan
& Alan Bernikow JCC, Avis/South Shore JCC and
Aberlin/North Shore JCC.
Volunteer
JCC DART volunteers are recruited from all over
Staten Island to assist individuals and families
impacted by disaster. During and after many emergencies, Staten Island bridges close, leaving disaster
victims feeling helpless. Since JCC DART is stationed in Staten Island, JCC DART mobilizes faster
than larger disaster relief organizations based in
Manhattan, eliminating the delay of vital resources
to the Staten Island community.
JCC DART volunteers are trained to respond to
all types of disasters, including hurricanes, snow
storms, power outages, main water line breaks, etc.
Trainings include American Red Cross, World
Cares, NYC and OSHA 10 certification.
For more information, please contact Debbie Burack at 646.261.6576 or [email protected].

The JCC Beacon program serves the community on the north shore and south shore of Staten Island.
The after school program for middle school and high school students offers a wide variety of essential
services to school age children as well as their parents and the community. The mission of the Beacon
program is to provide activities that are not generally available during the school day. The Beacon program also works closely with each Principal to support their ongoing academic needs. Regularly scheduled after school, evening, Saturday and summer camp programs include academic help (STEM based),
social services, recreational, leadership development, music, dance, art and drama as well as nutritional
enhancements. There is a registration process for enrollment into the JCC Beacon programs with applications available at each site. The JCC Beacon Program is funded by the Department of Youth and
Community Development (DYCD), a NYC agency.
JCC OST Program
JCC OST (out of school time) Program @ PS 65
Seth Kaplan, Director, 347.466.4407
The JCC OST program provides after school programming for elementary aged children in the north
shore area. Similar to the JCC Beacon program, the OST program complements the school day of children by offering academics, socialization, recreation and the arts. Parents and the surrounding community are also provided with opportunities to support the efforts of the OST program by civic engagement
events that bring the community together. The summer camp program offered by the JCC OST program
is relocated to IS 61 for full day camp activities. To enroll for the OST program, applications can be submitted to the OST office at PS 65. The JCC OST program is funded by the Department of Youth and
Community Development (DYCD), a NYC agency.

The JCC Cornerstone programs are youth and community programs offered in community centers in
NYCHA housing areas on Staten Island. Programs are offered specifically for elementary school age
children (after school program and summer camp), middle school and high school students, young adults
and adults in the community. This DYCD program was added five years ago with the goal of developing
community pride, community building and community spirit through organized programs based on the
needs of the community. Other community programs are encouraged to offer their programs at each
site. In addition, the community is welcome to provide input and feedback into the program planning
through an active advisory board which meets monthly. Participants in each program are considered
first from the NYCHA buildings as well as from the surrounding community. The summer camp program serves the elementary age group only with additional funding provided to open the community
centers in the evenings and weekends for middle and high school students. The staff of the JCC Cornerstone programs are hired primarily from the community. For more information about the JCC Cornerstone programs please contact the community center at the number provided above.
