Metropolitan Campus: A
Here are some of Metro’s educational opportunities
that can give you an added advantage when it comes
to job hunting or graduate school:
Multidisciplinary is a word you’ll hear often to describe
the Metropolitan Campus. Faculty members from different
academic disciplines are encouraged to share their best thinking
on a subject. This is a campus where professors and students
work together to explore ideas and pursue new insights.
This is where classroom learning meets big-city experiences
head on. You’ll have access to all the academic opportunities
that our Metropolitan Campus has to offer — plus the nearby
resources of New York City. See the real paintings you study in
art class. Watch the stock market climb on Wall Street. Intern at

There’s a vitality at the Metropolitan Campus that you can
feel from the start. It’s created by the interaction of the
students who live and study here. They come from as close

by as the neighborhood around the corner — and as far
away as the most remote corner of the globe. Together,
they create an educational experience that is open-minded,
respectful of differing ideas and eager to share.
: An education that opens doors
Hands-on learning drives the academic experience at the
Metropolitan Campus. It can mean presenting a paper before a
professional society; doing a study of food eating preferences
for a class on animal behavior; screening your film at the New
York City finale of a national film competition; or meeting with
investigators to talk about their work on an unsolved crime.
Research and independent study opportunities let you
explore your interests in virtually any area of study with the
guidance of faculty mentors. Recent student research spanned
such diverse topics as The Constitutionality and Ramifications
of Gun Control and Microorganisms and Biofuels.
The University Honors Program, open to accomplished
freshmen and undergraduates, features honors courses and a
senior thesis completed in collaboration with a faculty mentor.
The Honors House enables honors students from throughout
the United States and 20 countries to live and work together.
The Global Scholars Program offers students a new way of
looking at themselves and their studies through four years of
academic, residential and co-curricular activities with a global
theme. Students participate in domestic and international
experiential learning, including involvement in specialized
United Nations programs and activities and a semester abroad.
“For any project I worked on, FDU offered
me a blank page — the opportunity to do
whatever I wanted. The attitude here is:
you pick a project and, if it is reasonable,
we will fund it. FDU fosters innovation.”

Our name says it all: we are a metropolitan campus in both
our outlook and location. We are a distinctive community
of individuals who live and work together to create a very
personal place to learn. You’ll discover that amazing things
happen when you bring together students of diverse backgrounds and interests to share a common bond of learning.

There’s no doubt about it — our Division I Knights
are a force to be reckoned with in sports. As
members of the Northeast Conference (NEC),
many of our teams are nationally recognized.
We’re the only university in the NEC to hold two
NCAA championships and we’ve won a record
seven NEC Commissioner’s Cups.

We play to win! Metro’s Lady Knights bowling team is a
consistent national contender. They were the NCAA Champions
in 2006 and 2010, and finished among the Final Four in 2011. Last
September, the team was honored by President Barack Obama
at a White House reception for Division I NCAA champions.
We play smart: Metro’s women’s
bowling and women’s golf teams
were honored this year by the
NCAA for exceptional academic
performance. In Spring 2011,
65 Knights were named to the
NEC Honor Roll with an average
GPA of 3.2. Twenty-three of those
students were also named to the
Commissioner’s Honor Roll for
GPAs of 3.75 or higher.
We play like pros: Nearly 50
Knight baseball players have gone
on to the pros. Our men’s and
women’s track teams have been
nationally ranked 10 times and
produced multiple Olympians.
Our women’s basketball team
has sent players to the pros and
produced an Olympian.

Campus Location and Neighborhoods
The Metropolitan Campus is less than 10 miles from New York City in Bergen County, NJ.
Running through the center of campus is the Hackensack River (an estuary), and many of
our buildings offer great views of the rise and fall of the tides.
The towns of Teaneck and Hackensack are located on opposite sides of the Hackensack River. Both have rich and interesting
histories, tracing their roots to America’s early Dutch settlers. George Washington was headquartered in Hackensack in 1772
and Teaneck played a pioneering role in school integration in the 1960s.
Teaneck and Hackensack both offer numerous shops, markets, ethnic groceries, cafés
and restaurants within easy walking distance of campus.

Getting to New York City
There is regular bus service to New York City’s Port Authority; the bus stop is
located less than a block from campus. A free shuttle bus is offered from the
campus on most weekends.
Traveling to Our Campus by Car
The Metropolitan Campus is located directly off Route 4 and is six miles from
the George Washington Bridge. It can be reached from such major routes as the
Garden State Parkway, the New Jersey Turnpike, and Routes 17 and 80.
For detailed driving directions to the Metropolitan Campus, visit fdu.edu/visit
and click the “Directions” link located at the left on the bottom of the page.
Traveling to Our Campus by Air
International and out-of-state students can reach the Metropolitan Campus
from three major airports. Closest is New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International
Airport, which is about a 40-minute drive to campus. New York City’s major airports
— Kennedy International and LaGuardia International — are approximately 1 to
1.5 hours from our campus. In advance of their flight, students should contact
the Office of Admissions for details on ground transportation options to
campus from these airports.
