Little City Raises Nearly
$450,000 at Annual Gala
More than 400 community leaders, philanthropists, and
supporters throughout Chicagoland came together on Saturday,
Nov. 16 to support children with autism and other disabilities
at Little City Foundation. Themed, “Building Our Children’s

intellectual and developmental disabilities.
In celebration of The Duffey Family Children’s Village—a
national breakthrough in the design of home environments for

support to children with special needs.
Emceed by Tom and Susanna Negovan, the live auction
raised nearly $90,000, which will help furnish the first two
children’s homes. In addition, Little City Board Members David
Rose and Verne Carson announced that $125,000 of matching
gifts will be made to The Village from The Rose/Hockfield Trust,

is a six-year-old project where chess students raise funds to support medical treatment, and now education, for Meher, a child
who was badly burned when her mosquito net caught fire. She
lives in the slums of Delhi, India. Maggie Gruber, a retired teacher
from Hough Street School, traveled to India to meet Meher and
the plastic surgeon that treated her. In the last six years, around
$40,000 has been donated to support the medical treatment
and education for Meher. The program has won many awards
for youth entrepreneurship, and produced a documentary
featuring District 220 schools that was entered for an Emmy

On November 5, the Montessori Children’s House of North
Barrington (MCHNB) hosted an educational presentation by
Citizens for Conservation (CFC). MCHNB has spent the last
two years developing and enhancing its outdoor classroom for
students. Susan Lenz, an expert from CFC, gave a presentation
devoted to native birds and their wildlife habitats. The students
watched birds, learned about characteristics of birds, and observed different types of bird eggs and nets. Lenz also shared
differences between migrating and residential birds, as well as
nocturnal birds. For more information about MCHNB, visit www.

Barrington Celebrates a New Holiday
Tradition
A line of Barrington ornaments were designed by Susan

From Friday, December 6 to Sunday, December 8, Barrington experienced the
launch of ChristKindlFest. Inspired by its larger counterpart in downtown Chicago,
the Fest featured an array of local area vendors, restaurants and breweries, and
entertainment for all ages. Housed in a heated tent, the audience was entertained
by everything from rock bands to bell choirs. Joining 250 other sites in America,
Barrington High School Band Director, Randy Karon, directed 30 area tuba players
in Barrington’s first Merry TubaChristmas. ChristKindlFest also had a Gingerbread
House competition in which culinary schools competed for the top prize. In the
weeks leading up to the fest, participating merchants displayed entries and had
visitors vote to select the winners. Children and their families had the opportunity
to pose for photos with reindeers and enjoy a carousel and other rides. The Barrington Rotary Clubs sponsored BHS Interact Club surpassed its goal of preparing
10,000 meals for hungry children in Guatemala. Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club
