Baseball fans (8,317) from across the state con-
verged on Victory Field June 19th & 20th to watch Indiana High School baseball at its best and they were treated to an outstanding weekend of hardball. It got started on a damp Friday night between two state powerhouse programs Andrean and Jasper. The Andrean 59ers celebrated a 2-1 victory over Jasper for its second consecutive Class 3A state title. Jasper got on the board first in the top of the fifth inning on Austin Alles' one out sac fly to left field. The 59ers came right back in the bottom half of the fifth as Chase Dawson tripled to the left cen-
ter wall with one away. He scored one batter later tying the game 1-1 on a wild pitch to the backstop. Andrean got the go-ahead run on Clay Thompson's two-out double to right center scoring Joe Albomon-
te from second. With the win, Andrean (30-6) cap-
tured its fifth baseball state title and all have come under the guidance of 36th year coach Dave Pish-
kur. Ben Moore of Jasper was the 3A recipient of the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award.
Saturday morning saw a rematch in 1A between Shakamak and Rockville. After falling 3-2 in last year's Class A title game to this same Shakamak squad, Rockville (28-6) turned the tables in beating the defending champs. Shakamak’s Parker Green's bases loaded single through the left side scored Dylan Collins putting the Lakers on top 1-0 in top of first inning. Rockville got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the 1st. Tyler Rapp's base-clearing triple over the head of the Shakamak centerfielder with one out gave the Rox a 3-1 lead. Kaleb Huxford then sacrificed to left field scoring Rapp making it 41. The Lakers cut the lead in the fifth inning as Mike Huddleston's double scored Braxton Yeryar. Dalton Laney (10-0) was the winning pitcher striking out 12 in 7 innings. Luke Monroe of Rockville was selected as the 1A recipient of the L.V. Phillips Mental Atti-
tude Award.
The 2A title game was a battle of schools that had never lost a baseball title game, something had to give. South Spencer had won all three of its previ-
ous matchups and Lafayette Central Catholic, play-
ing in the 2A final for the first time, had won all sev-
en in Class A. A pair of big innings helped topranked South Spencer to an 8-2 victory over Lafa-
yette Central Catholic. After third-ranked Central Catholic took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, Tyler Schneider's fourth inning homer to left evened the game at 1-1, followed by Zeth Young's 2 RBI single up the middle. Later in the inning, Kobe Stephens was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded forcing Trevor Lehr across the plate. The Rebels added four more in the sixth inning to break it wide open. Taylor Market of South Spencer was selected as the 2A recipient of the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award.
In Saturday night’s 4A game, Penn pitcher Skylar Szynski proved tough to handle most of the evening as Penn claimed a 3-2 victory over Terre Haute North. Penn struck for two runs in the opening stan-
za as Brandon Stesiak scored from second base on a throwing error. Nik Kavadas then followed with a double to left center scoring Metcalf for the early lead. The Kingsmen added a third run in the bottom of the third when Metcalf scored on a sac fly to cen-
ter by Trevor Waite. Patriot’s Brett Herndon sent a 2 RBI double to left center cutting the lead to 3-2 in the 5th. Penn’s Tim Lira was named the 4A recipient of the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award.
north sweeps n/s all-star series
Fifty of the top seniors from the State
of Indiana reported to Terre Haute
and Bob Warn Field at Indiana State
for the 41st annual All-Star Series.
In the series opener, the North squad
took an early lead scoring 2 runs each
in the 2nd & 3rd innings. The South
tied it 6-6 in the 7th but couldn’t hold on as the North scored 3 runs in the
9th taking the opener 10-6. Game two
saw the South squad jump out to a 5-0
lead through 3 innings. However, the
North team scored 3 runs each in the
4th & 5th inning as well as 4 runs in
the 6th to take a 10-5 lead. The South
team rallied for 3 runs in the top of the
8th but wasn’t enough as the North took game #2 11-8. The final game on
Sunday saw the North jump out to a 20 lead in the 1st. Then, they extended
it to 5-0 in the 6th. The South closed
the gap with a run in the 6th and 2 in
the 8th. The North scored 3 in the 8th
to complete the sweep with an 8-3
victory.
The Don Jennings MVP Award was
presented to Clay Dungan of Yorktown High School. Who went 5-11
with 5 RBI’s. Jostens will present Clay with a MVP ring.
The North maintains a 64-56 edge in
the annual event.
Many thanks to ISU head coach Mitch
Hannahs and his staff, along with the
countless other hands who helped
make the 41st annual North/South All
-Star event special.

JUNIOR SHOWCASE UPDATE
Dennis Kas and his staff including,
George Phares and Mark Flueckiger
ran this event with great efficiency. The four hour format allowed
more time for the 85 juniors on
hand to demonstrate their abilities
for the 22 college coaches from
across the Midwest and 1 scout who
were in attendance. The showcase
was held at Bob Warn Field on the
campus of Indiana State University
in Terre Haute prior to the North/
South Series. Thank you to Coach
Hannahs and the Sycamore staff for
their work in getting their facility ready for this annual event. We
continued the format instituted in
2014 that had the pitchers reporting first so that they had a better
opportunity to participate in the
rest of the showcase and college
coaches showed up early to see the
arms. Many thanks also go out to
BSN Sports who sponsored the showcase T-shirts.

2015 PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Again, this year when coaches voted for the All-State teams, they also had the opportunity to select the Indiana Player of the Year. The ballot included a nominee from each of the IHSBCA districts, plus any player who was drafted.
This years award was presented at the North/South All-Star banquet. The 2015 Indiana Player of the Year was Ashe Russell who played at Cathedral H.S. for Head Coach Rich Andriole. Ashe was drafted in the 1st round (21st overall) by the Kansas City Royals in this years MLB draft. Ashe signed and is currently playing Rookie ball in the Appalachian League.

BASEBALL STRIKES OUT KANCER UPDATE
The 2015 Baseball Strikes out Kancer campaign raised just over $2,000 for the American Cancer Society with a very small number of school participating. Mark Groveproject chairman for the IHSBCA is putting together plans with the ACS for next seasons campaign and it is the hope of the IHSBCA that we can get back to the point
where we are raising between $10,000-$20,000. Coaches—start thinking about a
game or an event that you could pair with the ACS for a truly worthy cause this upcoming season and help get our organization back on track in the fight against Cancer.

executive director update
Congratulations to the North squad as they swept the South in the annual all-star series. A big thank you also goes to Indiana State University and Head Coach Mitch Hannahs and his staff for hosting the three-day event this year. The banquet was highlighted by Brian Dorsett (former South All-Star and member of the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame) and the presentation of the Indiana High School Baseball Player of the Year Award to Ashe Russell of Cathedral High School. Clay Dungan of Yorktown High School was selected as the Don Jennings Most Valuable Player Award recipient.
All-State voting was completely online and went very well for year one. Participation and nominations were up from previous years and, while the process had some slight glitches, it was an excellent learning experience for all parties. We will try to ‘perfect’ some things for next year and continue to streamline the process.
The online Academic submissions and PayPal membership processes have also been working well for our coaches and we will continue to do more things electronically through our website. This newsletter is also one of the two (February) that is available online and is another step by your Executive Council to move forward with the suggestions from our membership.
The October newsletter will have the Hall of Fame voting in it and the December newsletter will involve the clinic registration. Not sure if clinic registration will be online, but we are exploring that as we speak. More details will follow.
Currently, we are working on surveying the principals and athletic directors for our proposal(s) to be submitted to the IHSAA Ex-
ecutive Board in November. Coaches have already been surveyed and we now have to survey the administrators to see what they will support. We will then ‘finalize’ which proposals will be submitted to the IIAAA and the IHSAA. Your leadership will then make a presentation and await the verdict of the Board. The process has gone very smoothly this year thanks to the efforts of Crawfordsville assistant coach Tommy Coy!
In closing, I just want to encourage each coach to find that new coach in your area and start to walk along beside of them. Each year we have turnover in the ranks and this year is no different. Veteran coaches need to assist the new guys with getting their membership in to the IHSBCA and, more importantly, getting involved. We want to educate our coaches and make them feel like they are a part of something. Enjoy the fall!

NFHS Rule Changes for 2016
Beginning with the 2016 season, umpires will be required to issue a warning to coaches before restriction to the bench/dugout or ejecting them as part of a new penalty progression to promote preventive officiating. The revision to Rule 3-3-1 Penalty was one of two changes recommended by the NFHS Baseball Rules Committee at its June 7-9 meeting. Previously, issuing a warning to an offending coach was optional for umpires, who will now restrict to the bench/dugout or eject coaches who commit a violation after previously being warned for a minor offense. However, coaches can still be ejected on a first offense if it is deemed to be major. Also part of the modification to Rule 3-3-1 Penalty, coaches who receive a written warning (Rule 10-2-3) will be restricted to the bench and/or dugout for the remainder of the game. “The new rule change has initiated a penalty progression, starting with a written warning, restriction to the bench/dugout and subsequent ejection from the contest,” said Elliot Hopkins, NFHS director of sports and student services and liaison to the Baseball Rules Committee. The changes to Rule 3-3-1 Penalty will help to de-escalate contentious situations and allow coaches to dictate their status in the game by their behavior, Hopkins said. The other change approved by the Baseball Rules Committee is an addition to Rule 3-3-1. Article “q” will state that a coach, player, substitute, attendant or other bench personnel shall not “have any physical contact, spitting, kicking of dirt or any other physical action directed toward an umpire.” The addition of article “q” serves to clarify other behaviors that would result in an ejection from the game, Hopkins said.
In addition to the two rules changes, the Baseball Rules Committee approved three Points of Emphasis for the 2016 season. Points of emphasis are developed by NFHS rules committees and should receive special focus and attention by officials, coaches, players, fans and other leaders within the high school setting. Points of Emphasis developed by the Baseball Rules Committee for the 2016 season are as follows:
INTERMEDIATE PENALTIES/RESTRICTION TO THE BENCH/DUGOUT, PROPER CATCHER’S EQUIPMENT, SPORTSMANSHIP/
