2012 Highlights N. 105th ST. AURORA AVE. N. 13 MIST Multi-disciplinary Intensive Support and Treatment MIST specifically focuses on those who are the highest utilizers of emergency systems. Not working out of an office, this small staff works operates in the trenches 7 days a week, blending outreach, community treatment, and integrated care. MIST includes a peer specialist, an RN, mental health and substance use specialists and a psychiatrist. MERCER ST 5 6 DENNY WY Chena 4 photo: Christopher Daniel Chena represented DESC in our 2012 film “Making Her Way Back” which debuted at our annual gala. She’s been living at the Lyon Building since 2010. With natural abilities in music (she plays the piano and guitar without having formal lessons) and languages (self taught in Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic) Chena’s story is a special one. Verbally, physically and sexually abused from a very young age, Chena turned to drugs in her teens to cope with the horrific way she was treated as a child. Although she lived on the streets for 20 years before coming to DESC, she has nothing but optimism for the future. With the help and support of her case manager, Chena has gotten her life and her addiction under control. Dave lived on and off of the streets since he was 17. He got his welder’s training through the Navy and begun a career as a ship fitter. Suffering from Bipolar Disorder and Epilepsy, Dave had difficulty keeping his job and housing. By the time the MIST team began working with him he was living in the woods and suffering from delusions. With MIST’s help, Dave moved into Rainier House in September 2012 where he’s keeping up with his medications, making new friends and enjoying the miniseries “Roots” in his new apartment. photo: Kathy Ulrich 9 10 ON ST IS E. CHERRY ST N CSC E AV 3 On July 17, 2012 at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, the National Alliance to End Homelessness recognized DESC with their 2012 Nonprofit Sector Achievement Award. This award is for DESC’s ongoing efforts to end homelessness, particularly among those whose struggle with homelessness is compounded with mental illness and substance abuse. YESLER WY 2 1 S. JACKSON ST It’s an immense honor to have received this recognition. The Alliance represents the largest network of homeless service providers, and is the single most influential policy advocacy organization in the country focused on addressing homelessness. ML KING JR. This event is close to front man Billy Joe Huels’ heart, as his brother Matt is a resident at one of DESC’s housing programs. Gimme Shelter is his way to give back to the organization that lifted his brother off of the streets into a new home and community, a brother whom he has looked up to his whole life. A family affair in many respects, the Huels family was well represented with siblings and cousins coming from as far away as Oregon and Illinois. The Seattle music family was represented by the talented musicians who came together for this important cause, but most of all, the family of DESC’s board, staff and supporters came together to rock out to a talented and diverse musical line up. 1 Union Hotel 204 3rd Ave S - 206-587-2460 52 stable, affordable apartments and services for disabled homeless men and women. 4 5 1811 Eastlake 1811 Eastlake Ave 206-957-0700 75 units for chronically homeless adults with severe alcoholism Kerner-Scott House 9 11 Main Emergency Shelter 510 Minor Ave N 206-621-7027 A safe place for 25 mentally ill homeless women to stay each night 1600 Lane St S. 206-682-2371 A safe place for adults who are experiencing a mental health crisis to stabilize, get connected to services and either returned to their homes or if homeless, connected to housing. Standing for Coaches for Occupational Achievements & Community Health, COACH trains volunteers to work one-on-one with clients who have demonstrated an interest in securing employment. Its goals are providing work skills and meaningful activities which play an active part in one’s recovery and connections to the outside world. photo: Sara Marckx In February 700 Seattle music lovers and DESC supporters descended upon The Showbox at The Market to enjoy the diverse talents of 7 bands and to raise over $31,000 to support DESC’s mission to end homelessness at our annual Gimme Shelter benefit concert. Eric went through the CSC and is now a current resident at DESC’s Aurora House. Living in a tent along railroad tracks in Bellevue for many years, 911 calls were made nearly daily due to his medical issues. Clearly living a life in crisis, Bellevue police and fire departments referred the CSC to Eric, hoping his life would stabilize. Thrift Store / COACH photo: Christopher Daniel Gimme Shelter When someone arrives in crisis, we provide all of their basic needs first: sleep, food, shelter, medications. After 24 hrs of rest, we help them make a plan. We partner with our clients and walk with them every day through their recovery and either help them return to their homes, or help them find longer term shelter and housing. When Eric came to CSC he did extremely well and when he stabilized he moved to Aurora House. When asked about his experience with CSC, he says “I’m working hard every day to feel worthy of it. I’m humbled.” In keeping with the theme, guests were treated to some childhood delights as all things LEGO® surrounded them. Six foot tall LEGOs® greeted guests in the lobby, LEGOs® were sprinkled on the tables like confetti and a huge LEGO® centerpiece decorated each table. Event speakers at the gala included Executive Director Bill Hobson, King County Executive Dow Constantine, and Ron Simms, former Deputy Director of HUD. The event raised over $200,000 to support DESC’s shelter, housing, and clinical programs. photo: Kathy Ulrich National Award The Crisis Solutions Center (CSC) provides a new resource for police, medics, mental health professionals, and other first responders to use for people who are in crisis and might otherwise receive no help, or be taken to jail or an ER. DESC demonstrates that creative, assertive and holistic approaches work best for vulnerable homeless men and women living with mental illnesses, substance addictions, and developmental disabilities. All DESC services are predicated on the concept of Housing First and the simple premise that clinical and social stabilization occur faster and are more enduring when the chaos of homelessness is eliminated from someone’s life. A safe and healthy place to live is always our first treatment goal.
