STATIONS OF THE CROSS
by Dietrich Brüggemann
Maria is 14 years old. Her family is part of a fundamentalist Catholic community. Maria lives her
everyday life in the modern world, yet her heart belongs to Jesus. She wants to follow him, to become a saint and go to heaven – just like all those holy children she’s always been told about. So
Maria goes through 14 stations, just like Jesus did on his path to Golgatha, and reaches her goal
in the end. Not even Christian, a boy she meets at school, can stop her, even if in another world,
they might have become friends, or even lovers. Left behind is a broken family that finds comfort
in faith, and the question if all these events were really so inevitable.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS is an indictment and, at the same time,
the legend of a saint. It’s a story of religion, devotion and radical
faith, and the film itself comes along just as radical as the subject
matter, telling the story in only 14 fixed-angle long shots.

JACK
by Edward Berger
JACK RUNS. Everything he does is infused with purpose, every muscle in his taut little body focused on
getting things done. Getting up on time. Waking his little brother Manuel. Going to school. Preparing
dinner. A lot for a child. But with a single mother, Sanna, who’s sweet, girlish and utterly unable to
cope, JACK RUNS THE HOUSE – and runs it well. Until an accident breaks their little community apart:
Child Welfare assigns Jack to a state-run home. When the holidays arrive, but Sanna doesn’t pick him
up and another boy bullies him with tragic results, he flees. On foot. Across the vast expanse of Berlin.
To Sanna, who is nowhere to be found. Picking up Manuel from a friend of his mother’s, he crisscrosses
the city in search of his mother. JACK RUNS INTO TROUBLE. The two boys need food, rest, sleep, but
Jack keeps going, fear and anguish written in his face, desperately searching for Sanna, desperate to
avoid being sent back to the home. JACK RUNS OUT OF STEAM. After what seems like an eternity, Jack
finds Sanna. And comes to a drastic realization...
Berlin-based and New York-trained director Edward Berger
delivers a pleasingly non-judgmental yet stirring tale about
courage and responsibility.

Paul Averhoff was once a great marathon runner, a legend, and gold medal winner at the 1956
Melbourne Olympics. Now well over 70 and in a nursing home, he is only left to choose between the
singing group and handicraft classes… and he can no longer avoid the decisive question: Was that it?
No way! He dons his old running shoes, and begins jogging in the nursing home park, soon determined to run the Berlin Marathon – and win it. While the “old fogeys” turn from sceptics into exuberant
fans, celebrating their hero from yesteryears, the management fears losing control. But when his
wife Margot dies, Paul falls into deep mourning. Can he still fulfil the promise his wife wrested from
him shortly before her death? That he would put aside his sad thoughts and keep running relentlessly
toward the marathon, even without her? Can he do it for himself and for everyone he wants to prove
himself to: his daughter Birgit, the nursing home residents, and the entire city...?

LE GRAND CAHIER
by János Szász
Towards the end of World War II a desperate young mother leaves her 13-year-old twin sons at their
grandmother’s house in the country - despite the fact that this grandmother is a cruel and bestial alcoholic. The villagers call her “the Witch” because she is rumored to have poisoned her husband long ago.
Previously pampered, the twins must learn how to survive alone in their new, rural surroundings. They
realize that the only way to cope with the absurd and inhumane world of adults and war is to become
completely unfeeling and merciless. By learning to free themselves from hunger, pain and emotion,
they will be able to endure future hardships. So they begin their own series of studies: they fortify their
spirits by reading the Bible and learning foreign languages. They practice every day to harden their bodies and minds. They desensitize themselves to insults and learn to ignore the more insidious appeals
of sentiment and love. The twins keep a record of all they have witnessed during the war, the Notebook,
written in their own strict code: The prose must be free from emotion, the notes precise and objective.
The story of 13-year-old twins during WWII who by studying the
evil surrounding them learn to rely on their loyalty to one another,
ultimately surviving in the face of challenging circumstances.

THE DEVIL’S VIOLINIST
by Bernard Rose
In the early 1830s Niccolo Paganini, the great virtuoso violinist, takes Paris by storm. “I am at present
marveling at the astounding miracles performed by Paganini in Paris,” writes French novelist Balzac.
“Do not imagine that it is merely a question of his bowing, his fingering, or the fantastic sounds he
draws from his violin. There is, beyond all doubt, something mysterious about this man. I go to every
one of his concerts. The opera house is packed to overflowing and the cashier raking in 20,000 francs
a night.”
It is said, in his native Italy, that to play with such virtuosity, Paganini has sold his soul to the devil.
Women faint at his concerts, claiming to see a demon guiding his bow at amazing speeds. Rumors
abound; he‘s been in prison for seducing a minor, he‘s seduced half the noble women of Europe, he is
capricious, vain, difficult.
A mystery biopic about Niccolo Paganini, the first rock star in
music history.

You can’t choose your family – which is why Conrad limits his visits with his parents to an absolute
minimum. His father Carl is an irritable old coot who enjoys plucking apart Conrad’s son Jonas and
his wife Tamara. Preferring to leave nothing to chance, Jonas proceeds pragmatically: the code word
“strawberry pie” means: time to go! At this year’s birthday massacre, Conrad’s mother Helene surprises
them with genuine news: she has left Carl and asks Conrad to do her a favor. She wants him to pay a
visit to Carl in their family home. It sounds harmless enough – until Conrad finds his father wallowing
in beer cans, pizza cartons and self-pity. Yet the old geezer still finds the energy to launch venomous
attacks on his son. When Carl injures himself seriously in a fall, Conrad has no choice but to move
back into his old childhood room. Three generations under one roof: a chance for reconciliation – or
a total disaster?
A warmhearted plea to all who secretly wish they could sometimes

THE HAPPY PRINCE
by Rupert Everett
THE HAPPY PRINCE is about the last days in the life of Oscar Wilde – a celebrity, a genius, an icon, even
a national treasure – now in the midst of a public meltdown. We look at the excessive quadrangular
love story he is trapped in. Everyone wants Oscar – Constance, Robbie and Bosie. The result is that
freedom eludes him. The once hailed writer observes his own failure with ironic distance and regards
the car crash of his life with detachment and humor. The film is a comedy with tragic undertones in the
tradition of the best of English tragedies.
The untold story of the last days in the tragic times of Oscar Wilde.

Rupert Everett recently starred to rave reviews as Oscar Wilde in a play by David Hare entitled
THE JUDAS KISS.
“The most convincing dramatic portrait of Wilde that I have come across … It also allows Rupert
Everett to give the performance of his career.” (THE GUARDIAN)

“It is inevitably hard to disengage Wilde from the pose, but Everett finds in Hare’s words the
pathos, anger and fearsome intelligence beneath his overwhelmingly tragic loyalty to love.”

WE ARE YOUNG, WE ARE STRONG
by Burhan Qurbani
WE ARE YOUNG, WE ARE STRONG. recounts the incident of violent xenophobic riots in Rostock in 1992
from the perspectives of three very different characters. LIEN is a Vietnamese woman who settled in
Germany, but at the end of the day she will be fighting for her life wondering if the place she called
home could ever be one for her. STEFAN and his friends are part of the night’s violent turmoil. Young
and angry, bored during the daytime, they look forward to the nightly riots and clashes with the police
and foreigners. Unable to cope with his grief at the loss of a friend, Stefan gets lost in a circle of violence.
Stefan’s father MARTIN is an ambitious local politician, trapped in a dilemma: does he advance his
career or stand up for his ideals and take responsibility, which includes that for his son?
In his follow-up to Berlin Competition debut SHAHADA, Burhan
Qurbani grippingly explores the driving forces of xenophobia
during the violent riots in freshly reunited Germany.
