Exhibition of artworks on paper and about paper
The Paper Cubed Project aims to gather artists who develop artworks on paper and about paper, and show
their artworks in exhibitions held in three different continents: Europe, America and Asia. The first exhibition
will be at the D. Diogo de Sousa Museum, in Braga, Portugal, bringing together artists from the following
countries: Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. The Paper Cubed
Project’s next exhibitions will be held in Brazil (2014) and in Japan (2015).
The event therefore is a meeting of artists from Ibero-American and Nordic countries, presenting a consistent
dialogue between different cultures, through artworks of six different categories: photography, painting on
paper, printmaking, drawing, watercolor and objects.
49 artists are participating in Paper Cubed Project - Braga, Portugal. The artists are:

This intercultural dialogue, which will be shown to the Portuguese audience, is in accordance with the AVA
Galleria’s institutional premise of developing events - characterized by a strong stylistic diversity - to initiate
or consolidate the artist's career internationally. AVA Galleria is based in Helsinki, Finland, and since 2006 has
been producing exhibitions not only in Helsinki, but also in cities like Paris, London, Berlin, Rio de Janeiro and
Osaka, among others.
The Paper Cubed Project - Braga, Portugal, will be held from 9 November 2013 to 13 January 2014, and the
inauguration will be at 8 November, Friday, at 18:00h.

Tällä hetkellä työskentelen pääasiallisesti maalaten ja tehden taiteilijakirjoja.
Työskentelyssäni minulle on tärkeää suora kosketus työstettävään materiaaliin. Paperi on tällä hetkellä
pääasiallinen materiaalini niin maalauksessa kuin kolmiulotteisessa työskentelyssäni. Työstän paperin
pintaa monin tavoin: ompelemalla, repimällä, liimaamalla, kunnes paperi on valmis vastaanottamaan
värin. Maalauksissani käytän tekniikkana pastellia, pigmenttiä ja mehiläisvahaa, joka antaa väreille
voimakkaan hehkun. Loppusilauksen teoksilleni antaa kulta tai hopea. Jo vuosien ajan teoksissani
on löytynyt samoja esittäviä peruselementtejä: vesi, tuli, vuori… Maalatessani koen olevani matkalla,
jonka näkymät siirtyvät maalauksiini. Taiteilijakirjatyöskentelyäni voisin kuvata lukukokemukseksi,
jossa edetään sivu sivulta, alusta loppuun. Mitä pidemmälle edetään, sitä vähemmäksi sanat käyvät.
Jäljelle jää voimakas tunne, tiivistys asiasta. Kun työskentelen taiteilijakirjojen parissa, kerron tarinaa.
Samanaikaisesti luen ja kirjoitan ilman sanoja. Taiteilijakirjojen tekeminen on auttanut minua
pyrkimyksissäni päästä taiteessani asian ytimeen, suoraan kerrontaan.

In my work I feel it is important to have direct contact with my materials. Paper is the main material
in my paintings and three-dimensional works. I work the surface of the paper in many ways: I
sew, rip and glue it until the paper is ready for color to be applied. In painting I work with pastels,
pigments and bee’s wax, which gives the colors a strong radiance. I add gold or silver as a finishing
touch. Over the years some basic representational elements have repeatedly appeared in my work:
water, fire, mountains. When I paint I feel that I am on a journey, where the images I see are
transferred to my paintings.
I could describe my working with artists’ books as reading experiences, where I progress page
by page, from beginning to end. The further I go the less significant the words become. A strong
feeling remains, the idea is concentrated. When I work with artists’ books I tell a story. At the same
time I read and write without words. In my art, making artists books has helped me get to the heart
of the matter, straight to the story.

Maalaukseni ovat akvarelleja paperille. Olen valinnut näin teknisen haastavuuden ja herkkyyden
vuoksi. Maalaukset syntyvät moniaistisista kokemuksista ja siitä miten ne vaikuttavat olemiseeni.
Kuvaan ilmiöitä joita en osaa kertoa sanoilla. Maalaus on vain maalaus, kärsivällisen ja riemullisen
prosessin viaton lapsi. Maalausprosessini on hidas ja rakentuu luottamuksesta sommittelun ja värin
voimaan. Sävyjen kerroksellisuus ja illusorinen syvyys värin sisällä ovat joitakin tietoisesti käyttämiäni
keinoja. Teosten nimet liittyvät musiikkiin, toisinaan kokemukseen paikasta tai syventymisestä värin
luonteenlaatuun. Maalaan etsijän uteliaisuudella.

My paintings are aquarelles on paper. I have chosen so due to the sensitivity and the challenging
nature of the technique. The paintings are based on multi-sensory experiences and the effect they
have on me. I depict phenomena which I cannot put into words. A painting is just a painting, an
innocent child of a patient and joyful process. The process is slow and it is based on trust to the
powers of composition and colour. The layeredness of tones and the illusory depth within a colour
are some of the methods I consciously use. The names of my paintings have to do with music or
with an experience of a place or, sometimes, with immersing myself in the nature of a colour. I paint
with a seeker’s curiosity.

In papermaking I can control the entire process from collecting the raw material,
beating the pulp, making the paper to transforming into an artwork.
Years of experience have released my own expression. The "second skin" appearance
as a result of the shrinkage from well hydrated pulps as well as layer by layer of
different beatings of more or less shrinking pulps give me endless possibilities for
my 2-D and 3-D works.
The picture for the Paper Cubed Project on this page is called FOLDINGS. I fold the
newly formed sheet – let it dry some time – unfold – fold again etc. until the paper
is dry. My work begins to tell it's story.

Kari Rindahl Endresen

Kari Rindahl Endresen was born in 1968 and lives and works as an artist in Tromsø, Northern
Norway. She is an autodidact artist and has over the past 20 years focused on watercolor. House
and wharves; often patinated by age and weather, is the basis for the artist's designs. A limited
color palette is the platform for her expression, and she tries to capture the light that is so strong
and powerful in the north. She paints on rough watercolor paper, preferably 640 g, which can
withstand many rounds of paint and water. In Norway, she has participated in many separate
and group exhibitions and she is collected by both private and public companies. Kari Rindahl
Endresen is also represented in H.M. Queen Sonja's private art collection. Kari Rindahl Endresen
has published two art books, "Lev vel" in 2010 and "Begonia og kjærtegn" in 2012. She has also
designed 3 wine labels for the wine line Fondateur.

One can express emotions in words: anxiety, hope, love, longing…
One can also express them in pictures. Emotions are formed through
contradictions and paradoxes. I have tried to capture some of them on
the cheapest possible material: cardboards from boxes in which fruits, TV
sets, computers, whatever, have been transported. The deepest emotions
make part of the flow of everyday life.
Ole Skovsmose has made exhibitions in galleries and museums in
England, Germany, Finland, Spain, The Netherlands, Norway, Bulgaria,
Portugal, Brazil and Denmark. He lives part of his time in Brazil and part
of it in Denmark. He is member of Associação Internacional de Artistas
Plásticos.

Multiculturalism allows for an infinite way of presenting perception.
A kaleidoscope of knowledge thanks globalization for a constant flow of
information, at hands reach, to compose an individual’s worldview. In a
world of increasing complexity, the artist probes underlying content of fused
collective unconsciousness, the oniric realm and the tense relationship
with social practices ligated to culture. There is a play on juxtaposition of
orient and occident divinity, the origin of one and the custom of another
dance in symphony in Michel Fassi´s surreal creations. As does the counter
relation of moving crowds in one piece and the off center, flat areas typical
of Japonisme in the other. Take a dive into the unknown proposed by the
Argentinean promise.

I was an agent of PSP and now I´m retired...
I am a self-taught and always had pleasure in drawing and painting. I had made enumerous different
works in watercolor, graphite and oil, usually on custom themes familiares. Normally I’m not afraid
to make mistakes, that’s my true to my self... living with all that I now and all the feelings.
My work usually envolves freely "need" to present daily memories, dreams, trying to put ideas into
a paper that thoughts, while fresh and sometimes uncontrolled. When I have a pencil in my hand,
I let him freely describe what I feel.

João Bosco Millen
Ihe career of Joäo Bosco Millen has shown unmistakable aspects of appreciation to the cultural
and artistic process, despite all vocational guidance related to questions on the analysis of the
psyche. Collector and supporter of artists from Vale do Paraiba, he follows the production and the
development of the themes approached. all the way through the publicizing of their results. He has
decided to work in contemporary art after doing meticulous exercises and research over the last
decade. The significant philosophical knowledge acquired with his doctor's degree in Philosophy and
Aesthetics at PUC/SP plus the theoretical background of the Psi field - which was largely made of
his professional experience - provides a solid foundation for new flights. Restlessness, an indelible
mark of his personality, is a demanding partner in the process of maturing of the artistic proposal
as a child delivered to be offered to the world as the definitive expression of personal fulfillment.

The generosity of this donation is not only in the aspect of the dreamlike, playful, and philosophical
message that pervades his works but definitely on the urgency of the three unusual exhibitions that
took place in 2010 and heralded a promising future for this sensitive articulator of image and word
we are pleased to see among us.

Carmen Thompson
The artist Carmen Thompson lives and works in Rio de Janeiro where she
investigates a variety of materials for the production of masks, sculptures,
paintings and watercolours. Her drawings have a specific space, rhythm
and time. In the practice of her strokes, she uses her skills and materials to
reach her goal. Since 2008, she has experimented with etching, where she
interferes subtly in the process of printing and through the use of colour, in
search for an alchemic opulence.
Born in Minas Gerais, by the time she was 10 she was already living in
Rio de Janeiro and had started her classical ballet studies. Later she has
attended modern and contemporary dance courses. During this time, she
took part in classes given by the dancer Klaus Vianna and joined Rainer
Vianna’s Dance Company.
The artist arms herself with her dancing experience as an instrument of
her action, in the space and on the paper. She opens the eye to possibility,
unique and unexpected, at the same time continuous like a movement and
poetic like a drawing.
For this 2013 exhibition, in Braga-Portugal, the artist will show her new
phase of works, whereby she handles photography as a starting point for
development leading to a creative work on the captured images using digital
art resources. “While walking on the streets of Rio de Janeiro during the
Carnival, I photographed spontaneously the exuberant images of light and
colour of the Carioca summer festivities. Arriving home, I immersed myself
in the content of the photos, their characteristics, angles, trying to find
out what the original photo did not reveal. I started a kind of dance with
them, where my interventions transformed the images almost by magic,
with endless possibilities.”

FRAGMENTS OF BUTTERFLIES WINGS
Kazuhe Shizuru was born in São Paulo - Brazil, where she now lives and works. She has a
degree in Biology and a passion for fine art, poetry and photography. Works in this exhibition
are based on her photographs taken of butterflies in the Atlantic forest region of São Paulo,
butterflies researched in books and internet classification. The composition of the paintings
(oil paint on cotton canvas) are fragments of wings from various species of butterflies, such
as the Morpho Hecuba and Caligo.

DEONOMO the Fluent Mundi - The conception of a world with fragments I'm Marco Antonio
Braga, born August 21, 1963 in São Paulo, Brazil. Having proposed art as communication between
author / audience, I call my works as 'Manifestations fragmental', working as an invitation to
communication, knowing and recognizing. Taken as 'fragments', the works in their entirety reveal
the search for a possible equalization between opposing forces, resulting in a 'structured time'
presented as an 'unstable equilibrium'. The code that accompanies the title of the works suggests
'positioning' in the structure of something larger, something that I call 'Deonomo'. The concept
of Deonomo refers to the process of 'world view', the very process of artistic creation, a world
in eternal fluency, discovery, research and construction (which will end up as unfinished work).
Fragment as perceived, the work, and an integral part of designing DEONOMO, now also part of
the construction of other 'worlds', those of the observers themselves, and with it, the relationship
is established communication.

Pico Garcez (b.1963 – Brazil) is a freelance Director & Photographer working in Brazil and NYC.
Exploring the diversity of subjects as landscapes , urban atmospheres and details on everyday
life, always with a special movie framework care. With a very clear sense of purpose and passion,
his photo artwork reveal his visions, as same as his videos do. Garcez is currently focused on
his fine art photography and recently exhibited at SP Art Fair in São Paulo. Today he splits his
time between Salvador, Manhattan and São Paulo, traveling frequently on assignment to Europe.
Recent exhibits include : Galeria Paulo Darze , SennaArt Gallery NY, Almavera SP, and SP Art Fair.

Sylvia Soares
Sylvia Soares was born in São Paulo, Brazil. She attended to
college of propaganda (School Superior of propaganda and
marketing).
In 2006 began attending the atelier of the painter Antonio Helio
Cabral and in 2007, with other artists, settled in a atelier in the
neighborhood of Santa Cecília, in the center of town.
Her work is figurative and grounded mainly in the principle of
observation, both in the case of live model as in the case of
portraits execution.

Ana Grebler

Ana Grebler is a painter who lives and works in Rio de Janeiro where she did her artistic training
at the well renowned Visual Art School of Parque Lage (www.eavparquelage.gov.rj.br) famous
for forming the contemporary brazilian generation of artists. Her latest artist research has been
on present-day ways of painting landscape. Previously painted canvases are freshly covered by
layers of acrylic paint and collage out of her torn drawings on paper and cut-outs of old painted
canvas thus creating imaginary places which express her deepest emotions. Layers, colors,
textures and shapes lead the viewer through a visual experience where fragments are employed
to build the image and where chance plays an important role.

Ivani Ranieri
Ivani Ranieri was born in São Paulo, on 6/10/1960. She graduated in
Art Education with specialization in Fine Arts (1991) and has a master
degree in watercolor, made at FASM (1998). She also got special
training in printmaking at two places in Italy: the Scuola Lorenzo Di
Medici (Florence) and the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica (Venice). For
17 years she taught printmaking and watercolor at the same University.
Since 1992 she organizes workshops about watercolor, nationally and
internationally, in places like the Art League School (New York), the
Scuola Internazionale di Grafica (Venice) "en plein" air of summer, the
Studio Bottega del Tintoretto (Venice), the Federal University of Rio
Grande do Norte, among others. Also, she has participated in several
solo and group exhibitions in Brazil and abroad.
According to Ivani, "watercolor is more than a technical process of
painting: it is a spiritual thing. It requires a different attitude of the
artist, because there are subtle materials like water and transparencies
involved. The colors will overlap as sheets of colored glass (light and
transparencies) and people working with it should have a similar stance
towards life".

Lucila Sartori
I can reinstate with my experience in the practice of etching that this is an activity that needs a
certain degree of purification of thoughts and images which appear in the artist’s mind, as well as
a great detachment from these images so that it enables the artist to reach the essentials to tell
about a subject.
I believe this is the reason why the task of engraving is so arduous. And so enchanting.
In the act of etching, there is also a need to open the way for the will and the time proper to each
material element involved in the making of this praxis. They are many and each one has their own
behavioural specificity. Handling these elements in harmonious way is the aim of all those who
venture in this field.
Yet another component essential to generate a work is the process lived by the artist when visited by
something from reality which impresses them and drives the desire to construct something related
to this experience.
It is a movement of the mind, the soul and the body asking for the concretisation in the visible world
of what was lived, and which through a poetic operation taking place in the interiority of the soul
and of intelligence, in fine tuning with the exteriority of procedures in the studio, transforms this
experience in image that will keep in itself the object already transfigured.
In order to allow a visitation, the artist needs to be open in a receptive attitude, in contemplation of
what is there, abdicating from the attempt to possess and direct. And only with such willingness and
openness will the phenomenon reveal itself in its plenitude. Even then there is always something
missing.
A Few Words about an Encounter
Someone once said that in the field of Arts Painting is Matter and Engraving is Spirit. I can understand
this statement in the sense that Engraving is a technique which requires deep consideration about
the materiality it consists of, and gives a physical body to images not yet in the visible world, besides
demanding the accurate choice of procedures that will render it feasible. It is not possible for the
artist who engraves to deceive or seduce, once, the engraving language, which consists of qualities
of lines, stained areas, shapes, related levels telling a history, will invariably show very clearly,
whether they like it or not, the paths threaded by the engraver, and the degree of knowledge and
sincerity in their inner self to place a poetic in motion.
The First Book of Visitations, Exercises on the endeavor of apprehending a Bird, was fruit of this
attitude. A very Brazilian bird, all black, typical, by the name of Jacú, some call him Wild Peacock,
visited me many times and during the last visit, hanging in time, he remained still on the branch,
letting himself be apprehended in all his physicality and generously offering himself to my gaze.
I also stood still trying to grasp his presence, admiring him. Admiring. He got so entangled in my
lines that I thought: he wants to become etching. I was not certain. I asked him what he had come
for, what message had he brought. He, then, unfolded in new images. Being one, he became many.
While standing still, the Bird wondered about future flying. I hurried on. He turned into words.
Words that would tell the history of our first encounter. Words that would express my feelings and
thoughts during my time with the images he was offering me. Words. Words about the mystery that
envelops what it is to be an artist in this world… A mystery surrounding all the beings in the world…
Not before long, bidding his farewell, always black, he soared his heavy body.

BELA Print Biennial
An innovative proposal, to bring together the art of two cultures in one event.
The BELA Print

Visitors in a reception in Enokojima Center
Biennial emerges with the suggestion of bringing together artists from Latin America and Europe
in an environment that aims to show the intense dialogue that the two cultures can express.
Leading the audience on a journey toward appreciation of the print artworks produced in these
two continents. It certainly is a challenge, to bring together different artists in a single glance.
This led us to concretely realize that, even though the artists are from distant and different
cultures, it is possible to find the same bias creativity among them. It is intended to broaden
the perception of all participants, thus consolidating a new path, understood as a process of
uniting different cultures and able to open a new perspective in the art of printing. The decision
to hold the Biennale in Japan allows the artists from Latin America and Europe, to show in the
East what is being developed in the art of printing. Thus opening a discussion on what can be
added to this ancient technique, bringing together people of 3 different continents, enabling
artist’s dialogue about these different creative possibilities in the art of printing.

Sebastiao Mendes is a Brazilian selftaught artist. He traces expressionist
and figurative themes with Brazilian
culture and customs. In his paintings he
demonstrates an epic feeling. Intense
lights, vigorous colors and pictures, a
powerful and elegant style found within
diverse techniques. His works are part of
several international private collections,
from Brazil, Cuba, Japan, Germany,
United States, Portugal, Austria, Spain,
Russia, China, Italy, Belgium and France.
This summer Mendes was on a North
European tour with shows in Oslo and
Helsinki. His exhibition in Helsinki was a
joint collaboration between AVA Galleria,
Galleria Nunes and the Secretariat for
Culture of Mato Grosso State in Brasil.

Schwedische Kunst in Berlin
"Schwedische Kunst in Berlin" was a group exhibition of Swedish artists, organized by AVA Gallery
5 -16.6.2013 in Gallery Forum Berlin am Meer. Beautiful work of 16 different artists was gathered
in this exhibition. The opening of the exhibition was 4.6.2013. "Schwedische Kunst in Berlin" was
the second exhibition organized by AVA Gallery in Gallery Forum Berlin Am Meer. The first exhibition
here was a group exhibition of Finnish artists in 2011 called "Creative Moments".
Gallery Forum Berlin Am Meer
Gallery Forum Berlin Am Meer (Berlin by the Sea) opened its doors in November 2002 in the
Kollwitzstraße, Prenzlauer Berg. The Gallery is a meeting place for artists from different cultures.
It offers artists an opportunity to show their work in Berlins artmetropoly and provides colorful art
experiences, paintings, performances, music, movies, lectures, dance and poetry. This part of Berlin
has been creative and artistic for centuries. Kollwitzstraße (Kollwitz Street) is named after Käthe
Kollwitz, one of the most famous German artists of the 20th century. Gallery Forum Berlin am Meer
is named after paintings byWerner Heldt, a painter who, after returning from exile in 1945, created
a poetical picture series of Berlin’s courtyards entitled “Berlin by the Sea”

"Schwedische Kunst in Berlin" oli AVA Gallerian järjestämä ruotsalaistaiteilijoiden Galleria Forum
Berlin am Meerissa 5-16.6.2013 pidetty yhteisnäyttely. Näyttely kokosi yhteen 16 taiteilijan upeat
työt. Näyttelyn avajaisia vietettiin 4.6.2013. "Schwedische Kunst in Berlin" oli jo toinen AVA Gallerian
Berlin Am Meer Galleriassa järjestämä näyttely. Ensimmäinen näyttely oli vuonna 2011 järjestetty
suomalaistaiteilijoiden yhteisnäyttely "Greative Moments".

Galerie Forum Berlin am Meer
Galleria Forum Berlin am Meer (Berliinin meri) avasi ovensa Kollwitzstraß -kadulla, Prenzlauer
Bergin alueella marraskuussa 2002. Galleria on eri kulttuureista olevien taiteilijoiden kohtauspaikka,
joka tarjoaa taiteilijoille mahdollisuuden esitellä vapaasti töitään Berliinin taidemetropolissa, sekä
värikkäitä taide-elämyksiä maalaustaiteesta performansseihin, musiikkiin, elokuviin, luentoihin,
tanssiin ja runouteen.
Alue on ollut vuosisatoja yksi Berliinin taiteellisimmista ja luovimmista kulmista. Kollwitzstraß
-katu on nimetty Käthe Kollwitzin mukaan. Kollwitz oli yksi 1900-luvun suurimmista saksalaisista
naistaitelijoista.
Galleria puolestaan sai nimensä Werner Heldtin vuonna 1945 maalaamasta teoksesta “Berliinin
meri”. Tämän runollisen kuvasarjan Berliiniläisistä pihoista Heldt maalasi palattuaan maanpaosta
tuhottuun Berliiniin.

CASA, THE ART SCHOOL FOR UNPRIVILEGED CHILDREN
Taidekoulu CASA (Centro de Assistencia Social e Artistica) aloitti toimintansa Rio de Janeirossa
Cidade de Deus nimisellä köyhälistöalueella elokuussa 2005. Sen perusti galleristipariskunta Helena
ja Edson Cardoso. Koulun tavoitteena on luoda uskoa ja auttaa lapsia toteuttamaan unelmansa
paremmasta tulevaisuudesta taiteen voimalla ja auttaa hyvin erilaisten ongelmien kanssa kamppailevia lapsia taideterapian avulla. Koulu toimii vapaaehtoisvoimin. Sitä vetävät riolainen taideterapeutti Glória Chan ja riolainen taiteilija Ney. Uutena ohjaajana koulussa on Gabriel Delfino Marques
joka vetää draamatunteja. Tunneilla käytetään brasilialaisen tutkijan Augusto Boalin kehittämiä
teatterimenetelmiä.
Art school CASA (Centro de Assistencia Social e Artistica) was founded in August 2005 in Cidade
de Deus, Rio de Janeiro. School’s aim is to create trust, help children with their dreams of a better
future with the power of art and help children in a wide range of problems through art therapy.
In 2005 Helena ja Edson Cardoso funded CASA - an art school for children in the slums (favela)
of Cidade de Deus - City of God, in Rio de Janeiro. The art school gives twenty children and their
families hope and security for the future. Although it’s like a drop in the ocean, it’s an important
drop. The school gives children a hobby and a direction in their life.
Taidekoulu antaa toivoa ja elämänuskoa muutamille kymmenille köyhyydessä ja kurjuudessa eläville
lapsille, sekä heidän perheilleen. Vaikka se on kuin pisara meressä, se on tärkeä pisara. Se pyrkii
antamaan lapsille hyvän harrastuksen ja uuden suunnan elämässä. Halukkaita lapsia olisi tulossa
taidekouluun enemmänkin, mutta pienten resurssien takia lasten määrää ei voida toistaiseksi kasvattaa.
Toivomme, että työllämme pystymme ennaltaehkäisemään lapsien joutumisen kadulle. Suomalainen
yhdistys Arte Vida Arte ry tukee taidekoulun toimintaa. Yhdistyksen järjestämien taidenäyttelyjen
yhteydessä suomalaiset taiteilijat ovat jo useana vuonna vierailleet Cidade de Deus:ssa ja työskennelleet lasten parissa. Sinäkin voit osallistua taidekoulun toiminnan tukemiseen ja siten mahdollistaa
lapsille paremman tulevaisuuden.

The director of CASA is a psychologist, art- therapist and artist Glória Chan. She runs the school with
the help of two local artists. At the moment there is 15 children in the school, by the age 4-15 but
alot more would like to participate.
The families of the children recieve monthly food suplies and in the future CASA wants to support
the parents with their problems as well. We hope that with our work we can save these children
from ending up on the streets. The Finnish organisation Arte Vida Arte ry funds The Art School
CASA. The Finnish artits from our organisation have visited Cidade de Deus and worked with the
children for last three years. You can also be a part or this valuable project and this way give the
kids a better future.
