Things Keep Changing and Moving Forward at WHS
Dear WHS families:
Welcome back! WHS embraces the notion of
continuous school improvement, and I have a few
improvements to share!

Construction of the new 10-classroom, two-story J wing will house
chemistry, engineering, and five other classrooms; completion date Fall
2017

Renovation of Bradley Field track, bleachers, and entrance; completion
date Fall 2016

New website look (same web address!); completed
In the vein of continuous school improvement, we have
two six-year school goals (we’re in year five) that drive
our decision making and funding. First, we are building a
spirited school community based on our 8 Conditions of
Student Success (non-academic means toward academic
ends). Second, we are closing the achievement gap
through a classroom focus on literacy skills. All of our
parent partners in booster groups, PTSA, ELAC, and The
Foundation help us monitor these two goals. The data we
gather to check our progress on the goals include participation
rates for sports and clubs, the demographic of students enrolling
in AS and AP classes, the rate at which English learners are
becoming proficient, and anecdotal evidence from student
surveys and focus groups.
As you are enjoying your last summer days, click on the website
link for the required summer reading for every single student
known as the BIG READ. Because WHS draws from 20
different middle schools, belonging is a primary focus every school year. To
build belonging, we start with summer reading. And because student choice is a
focus, too, students choose their reading with some guidelines: 1) 150 page
minimum 2) book can be reading required for an AS or AP class 3) non-fiction or
fiction 4) choose one of two projects to complete about the reading. WHS has a
cart of free cool titles to choose. Come pick one out! The BIG READ is due on
Mon, August 29, 6th period.

En la línea de mejoras continuas a la escuela,
tenemos dos metas a cumplir en seis años escolares
(estamos en el quinto) impulsadas por las decisiones
que tomamos y el financiamiento. Primero, estamos
construyendo una comunidad escolar entusiasta
basada en las 8 condiciones para el éxito del
estudiante (medios no académicos con fines
académicos). Segundo, estamos cerrando la brecha
en el rendimiento a través de un enfoque en las
destrezas de alfabetización en el aula. Todos nuestros padres que colaboran
en los grupos de refuerzo, asociados, PTSA, ELAC y la Fundación nos
ayudan a supervisar estas dos metas. Los datos que recogemos para medir
nuestro progreso en las metas incluyen el porcentaje de participación en
deportes y clubs, datos demográficos de estudiantes inscritos en clases AS y
AP, porcentajes en los cuales los Aprendices de Ingles están
siendo proficientes y evidencia anecdótica de las encuestas a

Welcome back Wildcats! I am looking forward to another school year filled with your
successful and productive endeavors. I joined WHS twenty-three years ago when I was
hired to fill a position as science teacher. That position expanded and evolved into titles
such as, Data Team Coordinator, Student Activities Director, and Shared Decision-Making
Facilitator before I was selected for the Instructional Vice Principal (IVP) position eight
years ago.
As IVP, my primary responsibilities include oversight of the Academic Core-Programs, Curriculum Development and
Alignment, Standardized Testing, Guidance Department, Professional Development, Department Chairs, Hiring Staff
Members and Title I funds.

We believe every student wants to be successful, and WHS is committed to helping students identify their goals and
supporting students to reach their goals.
BELONGING:
Being an important part of a group, while understanding you are special for who you are
Wildcats Get Ready for the NEW Big Read! (Student choice)

WHS students will self-select the book they wish to read over the summer (150 page minimum). We recommend
that parents review the titles and content and assist their student in making a suitable selection.

Big Read Assignment: All WHS students will choose ONE of the following assignments to complete. The
New Big Read day will be held on Monday, August 29, 2016. Be prepared to share/present your work on that
day!


OR


Create a colorful poster related to your book and WHS 8 Conditions of Student Success. Be sure the poster
includes the title and author of the book and at least 3 of the 8 conditions.
Write a minimum of 5 journal entries that illustrate at least 3 of the 8 conditions of student success in
response to reading of your book. These journal entries should be based on your thinking about the text.
When you find a good example of a character demonstrating one of the 8 conditions, write down the page
number in the book, and which condition is being shown. Write at least 3 sentences about how the
character’s actions may influence his or her future success.

students will be required to remain in the courses that they have selected previously in order to preserve ideal
learning environments. We will not honor any requests to alter schedules based on period/time, teacher, or

A Few Reminders...

All students should be putting in a minimum of one to two hours of quiet study every evening. Help your student
organize a time and place for consistent study periods.

The WHS Den is open for after school drop in tutoring every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:20-4:30 in
the MUR. Tutoring services provided by WHS teachers and snacks are provided.

Quiet Study is open after school every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 3:20-5:30 p.m. and Wednesday from
2:15-4:30 p.m. in the library. Tutoring services provided.

Arena Check-In
Arena check-in will be August 13th for incoming freshman and the August 15th for 10th 12th grades. Notices for arena check-in have been mailed out to every family. The online

WOODSIDE HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATION
PROVIDES RECORD FUNDING
Money for Smaller Class Sizes, New Electives, Academic Support
With the unprecedented support of Woodside families, alumni, and community, this school year the Foundation is already
providing more than $490,000 for the following:

Class Size Reduction: Thirteen additional sections of AS, AP and core English and math classes,
reducing class size in 64 classes.

New Electives: Expanded course offerings including Urban Debate League, Entrepreneurship, and
a Mobile Apps class.

Academic Support: Funding for The Den, an after school program offering free tutoring and collaborative work
spaces for students.

A second College and Career Counselor to provide expanded support to our students through the college
application and enrollment process.
This past year, we also received a directed donation to underwrite a significant upgrade of equipment and supplies for
STEM and digital arts classrooms.
“Our partnership with the Foundation enables the faculty and staff at Woodside to offer an amazing array of opportunities
to our students at all levels and academic abilities,” said WHS Principal Diane Burbank. “Smaller class sizes mean our
teachers can really give each student the attention they deserve and need for success. And, equipping our new STEM
building and expanding our computer science, robotics and other applied learning opportunities will help prepare our
students for success in college and in today’s workforce.”

Become a Mentor!
Community Service applications are available in the
AVP Porter’s office or on the school website. Students
must have a completed and approved application on
file before any of their community service hours will
count towards school credit. Remember to complete

The Academy program is a small school environment
which targets at-risk students. During their junior year,
students may request a career mentor that works with
them on both academic & career goals. The student’s
career interests are widespread ranging from engineering
and information technology to law enforcement and
medicine.
We are hoping that you, or
someone that you know,
might be able to participate
in this program as a mentor.
The
commitment
is
approximately 2 hours per
month, with most interactions via email and 4 face-toface meetings over the course of the school year. The
first meeting is scheduled for Friday, November 4th at
9am, and the program wraps up in early May.

News from the Athletic Department
Woodside athletics finished a strong spring season with our baseball, softball, and girls’ lacrosse teams all qualifying for
postseason play. In addition, two athletes, Karl Arvidsson (swimming) and Semanu Attiogbe (track and field) qualified
for state competition - congratulations to these outstanding seniors! Athletic registration for 2016-17 is in full swing,
please make your physical appointments now to enable your son or daughter to participate in Fall
sports beginning August 8th. In addition, numerous teams are holding summer workouts, please
check with respective coaches for details regarding times and locations.
Save the date - Thursday, August 11th@ 5:30pm our Athletic Boosters Organization will host our 3rd
Annual Athletic Kick-Off and BBQ, follow the smell of the grill to the QUAD for some food and
socializing with Wildcat coaches and fellow athletic supporters.
Facilities - construction is happening throughout our campus, and while there will be some
inconvenience for a few of our teams, the end result will be a revitalized Bradley Field (specifically
the entrance and stands), along with a new track and softball field. Please be patient and flexible as
we circumvent construction fences and upgrade our facilities.

Welcome to the 2016 -17 school year! For us parents of
Seniors, I know the excitement is totally different than the
Drama
excitement for you parents of Freshmen. So, whatever you’re
Boosters
situation, excitement is in the air. A big contributor to that
excitement is the anticipation of what will happen in the
Drama Department this year. Get your Drama hats on, and find
your place in the spotlight; whether you want to be front and center as a Thespian or your
desire and skill lie in the backstage world, we invite you to join us! There are multiple ways
for you, as a parent or a student, to support the many productions put on by the Woodside
High School Drama Department. Here are just a few:

Identify your passion and come on out and join the fun. The WHS Drama Department has a well-deserved reputation for
putting on quality shows. That quality is in part due to our amazing volunteers. Come and join us and be able to say, “I
helped with that”.

Our first meeting this year will be on August 24. This meeting will be held off-campus at the home of a Drama Booster
family. We will have time to socialize and then settle in to do some business in preparation for the earliest dates listed
above. Come by our “booth” during the Arena Check-in for details of where and when. If you miss us there, please write

Music
As we close the instrument case on the past year, we want to thank all the students and
especially our departing Seniors for their involvement in being the Sounds of Woodside.
Boosters
You will definitely be missed. As summer moves through, please keep an eye open for
communications from the Music Boosters and our Shutterfly account. A few key dates
for Marching Band Students will be Monday, August 8th thru Wednesday, August 10, 2016. This will be Band Camp,
and camp will start at 9am. We will be sending out information, closer to the start of camp.
There will be a mandatory parent meeting for all parents with students in the Music Programs. This meeting will be
Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at 7pm in the Music Room of the PAC. Please plan to attend, as we will discuss the
year, key dates and events. This will also serve as the Music Booster Meeting for everyone. The Music Boosters is the
parent group that supports all of the Music programs. We meet every first Wednesday of the Month at 7pm in
the Music Room. Please consider attending these meetings, as many hands make light work at our events and
throughout the year. Various officer positions are open, and we welcome fresh ideas and new parents. If you

Mr. Alvaro Calderon earned his BA in Sociology and
Spanish and his Masters in Education from San Jose
State. He also started on the Division 1 men's soccer
team that qualified for the NCAA soccer tournament!
He earned his counseling credential from San Jose State
and worked as a counselor in San Jose and Los Gatos
before coming to WHS. His work responsibilities
include athletics and student support services for student
last names A - L.

Ms. Wendy Porter earned her BA in Economics and her
Masters in Education from Stanford University. She
grew up in Davis and was a champion swimmer in high
school. She's a long-time Wildcat, having taught social
studies for 25 years, served 15 of those years as
department chair, and five years as athletic director
before becoming an administrator.

Welcome back, Class of 2018!
We have a big year ahead of us, and we need your help as parents of the junior class.
One of our biggest responsibilities will be running the concession stands during football and basketball games. This is
so important because most of the proceeds fund The Safe & Sober grad night. We need help planning, preparing,
setting up, selling, grilling and cleaning up. And if you aren't available Friday
nights to help, no worries! We also need shoppers and food and money donations.
The first round of concession stand duty will be for our Friday night Wildcat
Football home games on September 9, 16, and 30 and October 14 and 28. Come
mingle with old friends, meet new ones, and support the success of the Class of
2018!

Student Body Order Form
Bring the Student Body Order Form with you to Arena Check-In and be prepared. The order form can be downloaded
from the WHS website, under Student Life, Student Activities select Student Body Order Form.
Use the order form to get your PAL sticker and yearbook. Completed order forms and payment can be brought to
Arena Check In or mailed to the school treasurer.

$30
Students who purchase a PAL sticker receive discounts on sporting events, dances,
yearbook, and parking passes.
Yearbook
$70 with ASB/PAL, $80 without
Parking Passes will be $30 with ASB/PAL and $40 without for the school year. Forms can be picked up in the main
office.
Support Student Activities
Ever go to a game or purchased a dance ticket and wondered where is this money going? Money raised through the
purchase of PAL stickers, as well as ticket sales from sports and dances go to Student Activities which supports ALL
students at Woodside. Over the years Student Activities has paid for officials for all athletics, supported lunch time
intramurals, provided supplies to students in need of assistance and has sponsored a variety of events for students.
Student Activities is happy to support all the students at Woodside High School. Thank you to everyone who comes
out the games or gives their student money to go to the dance.
