Titus Andronicus at Young Shakespeare Workshop
The Young Shakespeare Workshop, a free program celebrating 25
years, is a Seattle-based non-profit that serves youth from Seattle and
regions beyond. The seven-week summer First Year program draws
teenagers from all walks of life to study and perform Shakespeare —
sonnets, speeches, scenes — giving them the opportunity to celebrate
the power of the human voice to illuminate experience. YSW was
awarded the nation’s highest honor for out-of-school youth arts training
in 2011, the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.
We sat down recently with Darren Lay, a professional
actor, director and teaching artist, that has been
directing the program since 1998, to discuss
Shakespeare’s power, the essential nature of art, and
ways you can help.
How did you get involved with the
Young Shakespeare Workshop?
My love of Shakespeare began when I
was a teenager in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is
incredible to me that a city like Seattle,
priding itself on the arts, has public high
schools without theatre programs. After
moving to Seattle I joined with Eric Ray
Anderson, a fellow working actor, and
Kimberly White, to take up the mantle
of the Young Shakespeare Workshop
from Edward Payson Call who began the
program. I was not thinking I would still
be at it 19 years later.
What’s the demographic profile of those
kids you serve?
Kids of every description and stripe
have participated in the program
over the years — poor kids, rich kids,
white kids, kids of color, straight
kids, queer kids, religious kids, nonreligious kids, kids with supportive
parents, kids without parents, English
language learners, immigrants, refugees,

conservative, or liberal. It is astonishing
how wide a range of people Shakespeare
can bring together.

that matches the vibrant and
family-friendly neighborhood of
Green Lake and the freedom to
pursue what matters to you the
most.
Our in-school academic year work
focuses primarily on low income public
schools where most all of the students
are kids of color. Cleveland High School
in the last several years has been the
school we have devoted the most time
and energy too, providing after-school
performance projects as well as in-class
residencies for humanities classes. Last
year for the first time we offered a forcredit Performing Shakespeare class in
the fall. We are hoping to do the same
this coming year if we can find enough
funding.
Is selling Shakespeare to kids a hard
sale?
It can be hard sometimes, if the context
and situation is not supportive, but once
kids get up on their feet and perform
Shakespeare with each other as opposed
to just reading it and have the time to
begin to own the words for themselves,
and see Shakespeare as ‘their artist’
writing for them, then Shakespeare the
brilliant poet and truth-teller does all of
the work. Shakespeare’s work easily sells
itself given the right environment.

kids?

Shakespeare gives kids a chance to
step directly into thoughts and feelings,
relationships and circumstances that
intrigue us all, a chance to experience
intensely nuanced reflection that can
relate to your own life experience or
circumstances of those around you
which acts to nourish a more intelligent
and observant understanding of us all.
The safe remove of art engages teens’
empathy and thoughtful weighing of
human interaction, incredibly valuable
to teenagers shaping their own identity
and voice. Theatre is such a deeply
worthy and important human invention
for examining the world and our place
in it.
What are your favorite Young
Shakespeare Workshop memories?
There are really too many to
choose from. Most revolve around
performances when students transcend
“the ordinary of Nature’s sale-work”
and we are all compelled to marvel at
Shakespeare’s brilliance. One should
never mistake Shakespeare’s brilliance
for your own, but sometimes it is lovely
to imagine it is yours for a while, and
you do come away feeling as if some
of it might have rubbed off on you in
some way during the insane funniness
of Midsummer’s rough mechanicals, or
the brutal and terrifying word induced
pindrop silences in Othello or the
hauntingly beautiful Richard II as either
performer or audience member.
What can people do to help YSW?
We are always cash poor (currently
working to raise funds to be at
Cleveland High School next fall) and of
course the absolute best way anyone
can help is to encourage that young
person you know who needs that extra
boost of confidence to contact us and
join an often wonderfully life changing
community. <

Putting together a summer of free Shakespeare in the parks is a whole lot of fun. Some
of the fun is in the planning spaces: What shows should we do? Who will direct? Who
will be in the cast? Are we going to go to any new parks? And then the fun amps
up when we start rehearsals. A few Wooden O veterans return to join us for another
summer. We welcome new friends to the family. We get to learn what the plans are for
each show. And we start to anticipate meeting you in the parks.
But Wooden O also has its challenges.
We strive to compensate our artists as best we can, because they are at the heart of our
work. We find ways to underwrite expenses. We tightly manage our construction costs
on sets and costumes. A company generously donates rehearsal spaces. We promote
the shows through inexpensive means such as social media.
We’ve been fortunate in our friends. We’ve had heroes who stepped up to help,
but some of that support has recently run dry. We’re facing significant increases in
costs to bring this summer tradition to you and this year’s Wooden O has been more
challenging than in the past.
We know that you enjoy and value your time with us in the parks; we hear it in your
applause and in your praise after the show is over. We love performing these great works
for you. They take on a different tone when performed outdoors. We love that you bring
your friends, family, and colleagues (and your dogs!). These plays are for everyone.
You are our partners in this summer tradition, and we need your help to make
it happen. This is why, at the end of the show, we ask you to contribute with a
donation. Please, when you give, take a moment to think about the value of the
memories created each year with friends and family.
But, also, please think about the other ways you can help — do you know of a free
space that can serve for rehearsals? Do you want to volunteer as an usher for our
indoor shows? If you enjoyed the performance, would you spread the word over a
beer with friends, through an email, or by sharing on Facebook or Twitter?
By doing any of this, you can be one of our heroes.
Your generosity makes each summer of Wooden O worth it. Not only to us, but to
everyone else who loves the experience . . . whether it’s their first time at Wooden O
or their twentieth time.

PLOT SYNOPSIS
The King of Navarre wants to make
his kingdom the center for academic
learning, in part by eliminating
all distractions — including the
company of women. He invites
three friends to join him and swear
to devote themselves to three years
of strenuous study. Longaville and
Dumaine agree, but Berowne is
dubious. He reminds the King that
the Princess of France is arriving
on state business. The King agrees
to speak to her but insists that
she and her ladies sleep outside
the palace. He also concedes to
the need for entertainment and
retains a clown called Costard and
a Spanish aristocrat, Don Armado.
Both men are in love with a peasant
named Jaquenetta, with whom
Costard has already been caught in
compromising circumstances.
The King is immediately captivated
by the Princess, and, of course, his
three lords are attracted to her
three ladies: Maria, Katherine, and
Rosaline. Rosaline and Berowne
fall into a bantering relationship.
Berowne writes her a love poem
and gives it to Costard to deliver.
Don Armado asks Costard to deliver
a love letter to Jaquenetta. The two
letters are, of course, mixed up.
The King and his three friends
finally overhear each other writing
love poems and decide to give up
their oaths. Disguised as Russians,
they set about actively courting
their respective lovers. The women,
already alerted to the scheme,
tease them by wearing masks
and switching partners. When the
tricks are discovered, everyone
takes it in good humor. They sit
down to enjoy a bungling pageant
performed by Don Armado and his
cohorts. The show is interrupted by
news that the French King has died,
and the Princess must return home
immediately. The men propose
marriage. The women refuse but
agree to return the following year.

PLOT SYNOPSIS
The ghost of Denmark’s recent
king has been seen walking the
castle. Prince Hamlet returns from
university for his father’s funeral.
He learns his uncle, Claudius, has
married his mother, Gertrude, and
is now king. Hamlet is horrified by
the hasty remarriage. He seeks the
ghost of his father, who reveals
that Claudius was responsible for
his death. Hamlet swears revenge,
assuming a pretense of insanity
to throw off suspicion. Claudius,
however, is still wary and employs
Hamlet’s friends, Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern, to spy on him.
Hamlet is in love with Ophelia, and
her father, Polonius, is convinced it
has caused the prince’s apparent
insanity. Hamlet maintains the
guise of madness even in Ophelia’s
presence and cruelly rejects her.
Hamlet hires a group of actors to
reenact his father’s murder. Claudius
is unable to conceal his reaction
during the performance. Later,
Hamlet visits Gertrude’s bedroom,
where Polonius hides behind a
curtain to spy on them. Hamlet
accuses his mother of adultery but
is tempered by his father’s ghost.
Hearing a noise behind the curtain,
he stabs the intruder to death,
mistaking Polonius for Claudius.
Hamlet is exiled and learns
Claudius has arranged to have him
killed, but engineers the deaths
of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern
instead. Returning to Denmark, he
finds that Ophelia has died. Her
brother, Laertes, challenges Hamlet
to a fencing match. Claudius
poisons Laertes’s sword and a
glass of wine, in case Hamlet wins.
Halmet is mortally wounded, and
Gertrude unwittingly drinks the
poisoned wine. Hamlet kills Laertes,
then Claudius, then dies.

Courtney is ecstatic to make her Wooden
O debut. Other work in Seattle includes
appearances at Annex Theatre, Ghost Light
Theatricals, and The Pocket Theater. She is
also a playwright who has work-shopped
her work in upstate New York, at tiny
theatre in NYC, and at The Pocket Theater
here in Seattle. She would like to thank all
the wonderful people in this production for
making this first experience so lovely.

Aaron is over the moon to have his Seattle
Shakespeare Company debut with Wooden
O’s Love’s Labour’s Lost! A Chicago native,
Aaron has performed with such companies
as New American Folk Theatre and
Transcendent Ensemble Theatre Company.
Recently, he played the role of Phillip “Flip”
Ranoni in Kia Corthron’s Force Continuum
under the direction of Malika Oyetimein.
Additionally, Aaron played Ted Bundy in
a short film recently wrapped called King
of Hearts which will premiere late this
summer. A now-third-year actor in the MFA
Professional Actor Training Program at the
University of Washington, he has also trained
in Chicago under the masterful tutelage
of Kathryn Gately and Richard Poole in the
Gately/Poole Meisner Conservatory and has
a BFA with an Acting/Directing focus from
Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi.

Anthony is a Seattle-based actor who is
thrilled to be performing with Wooden O
for the first time; he considers it an honor to
grace the stage with his talented cast mates.

or so. He has previously appeared in Seattle
Shakespeare Company’s statewide educational
tour, and this is his second production with
Wooden O. He would like to thank everyone

Keiko Green
Rosaline
Keiko is a playwright and performer,
originally from Georgia. This is her first time
with Wooden O, after appearing as Bianca in
Seattle Shakespeare Company’s Othello last
year. Recent work includes Stupid F#@*ing
Bird (ACT Theatre), The Comparables (Seattle
Repertory Theatre), and Amadeus and
Caught (both at Seattle Public Theater). She
can next be seen in the ACTLab/ArtsWest
musical Bad Apples this September and in
ACT Theatre’s Dangerous Liaisons in October.
Keiko is a proud member of ACT Theatre’s
2016 Core Acting Company, and just finished
up her residency with the Seattle Repertory
Theatre Writers’ Group. BFA in Acting: New
York University, Tisch School of the Arts.
Harry Todd Jamieson
Boyet
This summer marks Harry’s sixth with
Wooden O, and he could not be happier
about it. Harry is an actor, director, sound
designer, and teaching artist and has worked
in these disciplines locally and regionally
at various companies including Seattle
Shakespeare Company, ACT Theatre, Book-It
Repertory Theatre, Seattle Public Theater,
Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle Children’s
Theatre, New City Theatre, ArtsWest, Seattle
Opera, Theater Schmeater, Annex Theatre,
eSe Teatro, Balagan Theatre, Shakespeare
Walla Walla, and The Horse in Motion, among
others. Recent Shakespearean roles include
Keiko Green
Stephano in The Tempest, Rosalind in As You
Like It, Elbow in Measure for Measure, and
Gratiano in The Merchant of Venice. Harry is a
graduate of Western Washington University
where he received his BA in Drama.
Imogen Love

Imogen first appeared in Seattle in 1991, in
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (Red
Farm/Pioneer Square Theatre). Subsequent
favorites include:The Yellow Kid and Relative
Values (Annex Theatre); Reverse Psychology,
Under the Gaslight, and Chicks With Dicks
(Empty Space Theatre); Deflowered in the Attic
and What’ve We Done to Baby Jane? (Re-bar),
both of which she co-wrote; Maud/Lin in
Cloud Nine (Strawberry Theatre Workshop);
and Christine in These Streets (ACT Theatre).
She spent her last two summers in
Bellingham at the Mount Baker Theater, as
Elaine in Last of the Red Hot Lovers, Ginger in
Becky’s New Car, Maggie in Jake’s Women, and
Silda in Other Desert Cities. Directing credits
include Hedwig and the Angry Inch and What
You Sing Might Save You (Re-bar 2004, 2006).
TV credits include Grimm. She is delighted to
be making her Wooden O debut.
Jason Marr
King of Navarre
Jason is excited to be back with Wooden
O again this year! He last played Proteus
in The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and,
more recently, he performed with Seattle
Shakespeare Company in Mother Courage
and Her Children and Titus Andronicus. Other
roles include Felix Humble in Humble Boy
with Seattle Public Theater and Oliver in
Pitmen Painters with ACT Theatre. He has
performed with Shakespeare Santa Cruz,
Shakespeare Theatre Company in D.C.,
Book-It Repertory Theatre, Washington
Ensemble Theatre, Theater Schmeater,
GreenStage, Taproot Theatre, Harlequin
Productions, Theatre Anonymous, and
Island Stage Left. He is a co-founder of One
Lump or Two Productions (Elsinore Diaries,
Holiday of Errors). Jason earned a BFA in
Acting and Directing from UNC Greensboro
and an MFA from the Shakespeare Theatre
Company’s Academy for Classical Acting
at George Washington University. He is
married to the extraordinary Jill Marr.

Benjamin is a Pacific Northwest native and
a graduate of Cornish College of the Arts.
Although this is his first time with Wooden
O, he spent three seasons touring schools
with the Seattle Shakespeare Company’s
statewide educational tour as well as
appearing on the main stage in Cymbeline.
Some selected credits include Max in
Where the Wild Things Are (Seattle Children’s
Theatre), Paul Lazzaro in Slaughterhouse Five
(Book-it Repertory Theatre), Young Doctor
Larch in The Cider House Rules (Book-It
Repertory Theatre), and Kurt in The Art of
Bad Men (MAP Theatre). Benjamin recently
wrapped on his first feature film entitled
Colton and will produce, direct, and act in
Disconnected, a short film late this summer.
David Pichette
Don Armado
Previously at Seattle Shakespeare Company,
David has been King Henry in Henry IV Parts
1 and 2, Polonius in Hamlet, and Jaques in As
You Like It. At Utah Shakespeare Festival the
last two seasons he played Malvolio in Twelfth
Night, Shallow in Henry IV Part 2, Gremio in The
Taming of the Shrew, and The Fool in King Lear.
He just finished a run of Death of a Salesman
at ArtsWest, portraying Willy Loman.
Betsy Schwartz
Princess of France
Betsy has worked for many theatres in town
including Book-It Repertory Theatre, ACT
Theatre, Strawberry Theatre Workshop, Village
Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, and Intiman
Summer Festival. Previous Wooden O/Seattle
Shakespeare Company roles include Rosalind
in As You Like It and Mrs. Linde in A Doll’s House.
Betsy is a founding member of upstart crow
collective and played Arthur in the collective’s
2006 production of King John; she will also be
seen in the Seattle Shakespeare Company/
upstart crow collective’s collaboration of Bring
Down the House, Parts 1 and 2 in 2017. She is
also a founding company member of New
Century Theatre Company and was last seen
in Festen and 2014’s Tails of Wasps, for which
she won a Seattle Times Footlight Award,
Gypsy Rose Lee Award, and a Gregory Award
nomination. Betsy has a MFA from Southern
Methodist University.

Porscha is overjoyed to be joining Wooden
O this summer! Porscha moved from Santa
Fe nine months ago to Seattle with her
best friend and two dogs. She is currently
finishing up her first year as a graduate
student in UW’s acting program.
Chris Shea
Costard
Chris is a multi-faceted theatre artist from
Dayton, OH (go Flyers!) who has worked
with companies across the nation on both
sides of the table. His short play based on
Shakespeare’s clowns and fools, ‘Sup, Fool?,
recently premiered at the Pocket Theatre.
Chris is a company member with Seattle’s
Theatre22 and a licensed home inspector
with Optimized Inspection Services.

Longaville
Marco is thrilled to be playing Longaville in
his debut with Wooden O. He is a current
student at Cornish College of the Arts,
graduating with the class of 2017. He has
had the privilege of working with companies
such as eSe Teatro, ACTlab, Seattle
Playwrights’ Circle, and the Blood Ensemble.
School productions have included Baloo
in the Jungalbook, Juror #3 in Twelve Angry
Jurors, and a variety of original works. He
lives in Belltown with his lovely girlfriend,
Hannah, to whom he attributes his sanity.

Nathan is incredibly excited and honored
to be performing in this wonderful
production with such an amazing cast!
He has just graduated from the University
of Washington with a BA in Drama
Performance and a BS in Environmental
Science and Resource Management. You
may have seen him over the past few years
in the UW Drama Main Stage productions
of Boys’ Life, The Beggar’s Opera, and The
Workroom — as well as many productions
with the Undergraduate Theatre Society on
the UW campus. He is incredibly excited to
continue his love and exploration of acting,
clowning, physical theatre, and circus arts
here and into the future.

Emily is a sophomore Drama major and will be
studying drama at the University of East Anglia,
United Kingdom, next fall. She spent the last
year studying theatre with the University of
San Francisco’s Performing Arts and Social
Justice program. Previous credits include

Festival); Thomas Hodges in Dear Harvey
(University of San Francisco); Celia in As You Like

Mary is a founding member of Book-It
Repertory Theatre, where she has directed
her adaptation of A Confederacy of Dunces
and Lady Chatterley’s Lover; as well as
Waxwings, Silver Water, Double Indemnity,
Anna Karenina, and many short stories. Other
directing credits: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet,
The Winter’s Tale (for Seattle Shakespeare
Company statewide touring productions/
Wooden O), Zoo Story, Finding the Sun, After
Magritte, Owen Meany’s Christmas Pageant,
and The Turn of the Screw. She was a writer/

Seattle Scenic Studios is the only nonprofit scenic fabrication organization in
the United States. They provide technical
support to non-profit theatres and
museums throughout the state, including
Seattle Shakespeare Company. Seattle
Scenic has supported productions from
Washington to New York, from Lincoln, NB,
to Spoleto, Italy. They also train the next
generation of technical theatre artists,
supporting programs at Roosevelt High
School, Kamiak High School, the Bush
School, Evergreen Middle School, Billings
Middle School, Seattle Prep, and Islander

Sound Designer
Kyle is thrilled to be making his Seattle
Shakespeare Company debut with
Wooden O this summer. Since 2010, he has
designed sound for over 35 productions
in the Seattle area, including: Annapurna,

Miles, Every Christmas Story Ever Told…
and then some! (ArtsWest); Marisol (The

is a recent Musical Theatre graduate from

mounted her one woman show Unsex
Me Here, using female Shakespearean
monologues to talk about women’s issues.

Children’s Hour (Intiman Theatre), Twelfth
Night (Cornish College of the Arts), Blown
Youth (Cornish College of the Arts), and
Robin Hood (Anything is Possible Theatre).
Meghan also performs as her fierce NeoBurlesque alter-ego The Feline Frenzy, as

The Partners alongside Rafael Molina.
Meghan hopes to continue working in
Seattle theatre and pursue her passion for

Jim most recently appeared at Seattle
Shakespeare Company in Titus Andronicus
as Marcus. Before that Jim was in Mother
Courage and Her Children, as well as playing
Montano in Othello. This is Jim’s 5th Wooden
O summer, last being seen as the Duke in
The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Last summer
Jim played Kurt Vonnegut in Book-It
Repertory Theatre’s Slaughterhouse-Five,
for which he received a Gregory Award
nomination for Outstanding Performance.
Some of Jim’s favorite roles to date include
Atticus Finch in Village Theatre’s To Kill a
Mockingbird and Mountain McClintock
in Theater Schmeater’s Requiem for a
Heavyweight. Jim has four Seattle Times
Footlight awards. He is married to the
beautiful and talented Kelly Kitchens.

Meme is a recent graduate of Seattle
University, where she received a double
major with departmental honors in
Performing Arts and Women and Gender
Studies. In addition to performing with
Wooden O, she is currently working
with Seattle Repertory Theatre to create
a curriculum for community-oriented
Shakespeare productions, as well as
working on House of Sueños, a solo show
that weaves together Shakespeare’s Canon
and her own memories and stories. She has
previously worked with New City Theatre,
Strawberry Theatre Workshop, Book-It
Repertory Theatre, Intiman Theatre Festival,
Seattle Shakespeare Company, upstart
crow collective, The Merc Theatre, Actors
Shakespeare Project in Boston, and Freehold
Theatre. She is a Fulbright Scholar and will
be traveling to the UK this fall to receive her
MA in Classical Acting from LAMDA.

Trevor recently appeared in Romeo and Juliet,
Mrs. Warren’s Profession, and Titus Andronicus,

touring productions. A Seattle-based actor
and producer, he has performed locally with
Book-It Repertory Theatre, Seattle Public
Theater, Playing in Progress, Island Stage
Left, SOAPfest, ReAct Theatre, and The 14/48
Projects. As a producer, Trevor has helped
bring to the stage the world premieres of For
Christmas by Nick Edwards, A Cure for Pain by

and Barbarians — a devised piece with SITI
Company associate Jeffrey Fracé. He earned
his MFA from the University of Washington’s

Rafael is an actor, director, playwright, singer/
songwriter, and a San Francisco native. Recent
acting credits include Romeo and Juliet and
The Tempest (Seattle Shakespeare Company
statewide tour), Quixote (Cornish College of
the Arts), and The Children’s Hour and John
Baxter Is a Switch-Hitter (Intiman Theatre
Festival). Rafael graduated from Cornish
College of the Arts with a BFA in Original
Works. This August at the Cornish Playhouse,
he will be directing Raisins in a Glass of Milk, an
original documentary-style piece comprised
of interviews from theater artists of color in
our community.

Conner is a New Century Theater Company
member and a graduate of Cornish College
of the Arts. He is a local teaching artist
and is very thankful to be returning to
Wooden O for a third year. He made his
Wooden O debut as Valentine in The Two
Gentlemen of Verona in 2014, then played
Prince Hal in Henry IV, Part 1 last year. Away

Words alone cannot express how excited Arjun
is to be performing for you, or how happy
he is that you came to see the show. He last
appeared with Seattle Shakespeare Company’s
statewide touring productions of Romeo and
Juliet and The Tempest and, last fall, as Dromio
of Syracuse in The Comedy of Errors. You also
may have seen him and his sideburns last
winter at Book-It Repertory Theatre where
he played Frank Churchill in their adaption
of Emma. And before those you may have
seen him on stage at Brown University, where
he received a BA in Theater and Performing
Arts. But regardless, those shows have passed
and this one has not, so above all else, Arjun

David’s work with the Seattle Shakespeare
Company was most recently seen in
the capacity as director for last season’s
grindhouse gore-fest, Titus Andronicus. As
a director, David also helmed the Wooden
O “doo-wop” production of The Two
Gentleman of Verona a couple of summers
back. You may remember David as an
actor for Wooden O as the picnic-stealing
Autolychus in The Winter’s Tale or as the
redneck Petruchio in The Taming of the
Shrew. This production marks David’s eighth
time as a summertime participant with
Wooden O. As always, he is delighted to be
doing what actors have been doing for over
400 years — playing Shakespeare outdoors
for exuberant, sometimes rowdy, audiences.

Kayla is thrilled to be back with Wooden O! As
a dialect coach and actress, she has worked
with Book-It Repertory Theatre (Emma, I Am
Of Ireland), ACT Theatre (A Christmas Carol),
Annex Theatre (Zapoi!, Bunnies), Wooden O
(Julius Caesar), Washington Ensemble Theatre
(Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo), Theater
Schmeater, Taproot Theatre, Strawberry

Theatre (Billy Elliot, Mary Poppins, Cabaret). She
is a proud graduate of Cornish College of the

Baker Theater on The Odd Couple. For the
last three years he has been a stagehand
at Village Theatre, recently working on My
Heart is the Drum, My Fair Lady, and Cabaret.
Evan Mosher
Sound Designer
Evan is a Seattle sound designer, musician,
and actor. He’s delighted to be back in the
parks with Wooden O this summer after
previously designing Julius Caesar in 2014. His
designs have also been heard at Strawberry
Theatre Workshop, Seattle Shakespeare
Company, Seattle Public Theater, Washington
Ensemble Theatre, ArtsWest, Satori Group,

John Bradshaw
Managing Director
Now in his thirteenth season with Seattle
Shakespeare Company, John is a graduate of
the University of Washington and has spent
nearly his entire career as part of the Seattle
theatre community. Prior to joining Seattle
Shakespeare Company, he was Managing
Director at The Empty Space Theatre and
Director of Endowment and Planned Giving
for Seattle Repertory Theatre. John served
as General Manager and Development
Director during construction and initial
operations at Kirkland Performance Center.
At Seattle Children’s Theatre, he was part of
the development staff during the capital
campaign to build the Charlotte Martin
Theatre. Prior to going into administration,
John served as an AEA stage manager at
several professional theatres in Seattle. John is
on the Honorary Advisory Board for the School

LABOUR’S
LOST
Depending on who you read, Love’s Labour’s Lost is a comedy cum tragedy, a satire, a
play on words, a punfest, a pastoral, a masque, an experiment in language, or a farce.
For three hundred years it was dismissed by critics as being unworthy of production,
and then it experienced a renaissance beginning in the 20th century. Most of the
references are dated or lost, action is sparse and the ending is…well, the ending.
Why then produce this challenging and unconventional piece? Because Will had plenty
of keen insights into humanity’s foibles even at this very early stage of his calling.
This is a play about love – the timelessness of falling in love and falling all over
oneself in pursuit of love. It’s about language and verbal jousting between
characters (relate that back to how people do the same thing today - think
politics!). And it’s a play about self – what people think they are versus what they
really are (and how other people see them). In other words “it’s all about me.’

“Me” as in how cleverly I can speak when fewer words would do; how breaking my
solemn oath is okay if I get what I want; how my needs prevent me from seeing the
truth and how life based on “me” alone is on the most perilous of grounds.
So I decided to set the piece in what was probably the quintessential “it’s all about
me” era of the last 50 years – the late 1970s. After the heady days of civil rights and
antiwar activism in the 60s, the country took to the pursuit of inner/outer self with an
obsessive determination during the 70s: Transcendental Meditation, mood rings, body
building, est, I’m Okay, You’re Okay, jogging, pet rocks, earth shoes …some of which was
beneficial and lasting, but most of it was as peculiar as four young men retreating from
the world and solemnly vowing to see no women, read, fast and sleep very little for
three years. A vow destined to go the way of those polyester disco shirts.
So, we’re off to the Navarre Retreat where we’ll contemplate body/mind/spirit (at
least until the women show up) aided by a crew of some of Shakespeare’s odder
characters. And since the play does not end the way we expect it to, it is a reminder
that life has its own agenda that often has nothing to do with what we want.

Bringing Classical Music to the Masses

Opera on Tap is pouring
out opera locally.

It’s a regular night at the dive bar that is
the Blue Moon Tavern. Folks perched on
stools looking out at the Seattle gloom.
Folks arrayed in a booth, wooden tables
all scuffed and abused with graffiti.
Folks standing around outside with
cigarettes, trying not to get wet from
the besotted sky. Or is it a regular
night? For what’s happening on stage,
exactly? A soprano is singing. A tenor,
too, and they’re singing…opera? Here?
At the Blue Moon Tavern? Why can’t
opera stars be rock stars, too? They can,
thanks to Opera on Tap.
Founded in Brooklyn, New York in 2005,
Opera on Tap now has 19 chapters
internationally, bringing opera to the
masses. It was founded, as their website
states, to “promote opera as a viable,
living and progressive art form and to
support the artists who continue to
keep the art form alive.” Drinking beers
with Berlioz and booze with Beethoven
is something Seattleites are now
growing accustomed to because of the
city’s chapter growing event by event.
Ksenia Popova, a proclaimed “comanaging diva” of the operation, is a
Russian-born, Seattle-based soprano.
This is to say, Popova is not just
promoting opera locally, she’s singing
it. A frequent soloist for Seattle Opera
Guild’s Preview Groups, she, along
with other like-minded divas and
divos, put together events around the
city with accomplished singers and
musicians. “We make opera,” she says,
“approachable and digestible. Also, it’s
rare that you’ll have a singer blasting
away just inches from you — it’s a

visceral feeling you wouldn’t get going
to a concert hall.”
This past April, at Naked City in
Greenwood, they put together “Art
of War,” highlighting opera’s most
famous power struggles. In May, at the
Blue Moon, Opera on Tap performed
“Much Ado about Opera,” focusing on
Shakespearean opera. In June, they had
a show at the tiki-themed bar, Hula
Hula. The shows are a $5 suggested
donation with the monies garnered
distributed amongst the performers.

Gestures is organized by the Museum
of Contemporary Art Denver and
the University of Colorado Colorado
Springs Gallery of Contemporary
Art. The presentation at the Henry is
organized by Nina Bozicnik, Assistant
Curator, with support from 4Culture,
ArtsFund, and the Seattle Office of
Arts & Culture.

There’s a growing effort to showcase, in
the city, classical music and its forms
to communities who might not have
access to it otherwise. Perhaps a ticket
to Seattle Opera’s The Flying Dutchman
is a little too much for some, but
perhaps $5 and a couple of drinks at the
bar to hear selections from La Boheme
and The Marriage of Figaro isn’t as
challenging. Perhaps one has never
been exposed to opera at all and then,
suddenly, one hears Bizet’s The Pearl
Fishers in their local watering hole and
it moves them. That’s what happened
at a brewery in Ballard. Popova recalls,
“At the end of our show, a woman – who
was part of a motorcycle convention
on the same street — came up to me
with tears in her eyes. She’d never heard
opera before and thought it was the
most beautiful thing. That means a lot
to me — when we make someone feel.”
That’s what the organization is hoping
for — to expose new audiences to what
opera is and to aid opera singers in
their quest to do what they love doing
— singing opera. What better feeling
is there – than comfortably at a local
haunt with friends, frosty pints in hand,
and Pagliacci arias in one’s ears? <
