Park County’s Reference Source for Parents & Caregivers
Pediatric
RESOURCE GUIDE
THE PEDIATRIC RESOURCE GUIDE is a reference source that has been created for
parents and caregivers to serve the children of Park County ages birth through 18. This is
the second edition of this guide, which will be regularly updated online and in print every
2-3 years.
This guide was created by the Park County Pediatric Community Care Team. The Park
County Pediatric Community Care Team is a collaborative of local organizations that
provide medical, social and educational services to the children of Park County. These
agencies, listed on page 2, work together to improve access to pediatric services, provide
resources and information to children and their families and develop new programs to
meet the needs of Park County’s children.
The need for this guide was identified by the Park County Pediatric Community Care Team
and by the many busy parents who reside in Park County who may not know of all of the
services available for children and teens or how to access them. Every effort was made to
include all Park County resources available for children. In addition, resources not available
in Park County are listed where they are available in the surrounding region. Types of
resources include education, childcare, healthcare, social services, recreation and church
programs, as well as information on some national organizations.
The information included here has been gathered by polling of community agencies,
compilations of existing resources and using the Internet and local telephone directories. All
tips throughout the guide are from the American Academy of Pediatrics unless otherwise
noted. If you know of additional resources that should be included here, if you have
updates or corrections for any of the entries already listed or if you would like additional
information, please do not hesitate to contact the Park County Pediatric Community Care
Team at (406) 222-7231.
To receive additional copies of the Guide or to view an electronic version of the Guide, you
may contact any of the member agencies listed on page 2. (Agency web sites where the
Pediatric Resource Guide is available are denoted with an asterisk.)

Winter is a time when household
fires occur. It is a good time to
remember to:
• Buy and install smoke alarms on every floor of your home.
• Test smoke alarms monthly.
• Practice fire drills with your children.
When your adolescent talks:
• Pay attention.
• Watch, as well as listen.
• Try not to interrupt.
• If you don’t have time to listen when your child wants to talk, set a time that will be good for both of you.

Your youngster needs to feel accepted
and loved by others, beginning with the
family and then extending to groups
such as friends, schoolmates, sports
teams, a church or temple and even a
neighborhood or community. Without
this acceptance or group identity, he or
she may feel rejected, lonely and adrift
without a “home,” “family” or “group.”

population of 2,500. The boom ended
in 1890 with the drop in silver prices
and residents moved to other areas.

Your child should feel confident in his
ability to meet the challenges in his life.
This sense of personal power evolves
from having successful life experiences
in solving problems independently, being
creative and getting results for his efforts.
Setting appropriate expectations, not
too low and not too high, is critical to
developing competence and confidence.

Bear Paw Battlefield
Located 16 miles south of Chinook,
Montana on Highway 240, the
battlefield commemorates the final
conflict of the Nez Perce War of
1877. Following the breakout of
war in Idaho, nearly 800 Nez Perce
spent a long and arduous summer
fleeing U.S. Army troops first toward
Crow allies and then toward refuge
in Canada. Forty miles short of the
Canadian border and following a
five-day battle and siege, the Nez
Perce ceased fighting on October 5th,
1877, in which Chief Joseph gave his
immortal speech: “From where the
sun now stands, I will fight no more
forever.”
Big Hole National Battlefield
On August 9, 1877 gun shots
shattered a chilly dawn on a sleeping
camp of Nez Perce. Colonel John
Gibbon and 163 men of the 7th
Infantry and 34 Bitterroot Volunteers
had orders to stop the non-treaty Nez
Perce and return them to Idaho. The
nearly 800 Nez Perce men, women
and children had fled their native
lands when being forced onto a
smaller reservation.
Bighorn Canyon National
Recreation Area
Immerse yourself in the relaxing
surroundings of Bighorn Canyon

forest, mountains, upland prairie,
deep canyons, broad valleys, high
desert, lake and wetlands. Since
the creation of the recreation area,
people have been able to find tranquil
settings to better explore recreation,
nature, wildlife and history.
Give your child a chance to show
what she is capable of doing. Allow her to
take on tasks without being checked on
all the time. This shows trust on your part,
a sort of “letting go” with a sense of faith.

forests, alpine meadows, rugged
mountains and spectacular lakes.
With over 700 miles of trails, Glacier

lakes at their base, creating worldrenowned scenery that attracts nearly
four million visitors per year.
Grant-Kohrs Ranch
National Historic Site
Wide open spaces, the hard-working
cowboy, his spirited cow pony and
vast herds of cattle are among the
strongest symbols of the American
West. Once the headquarters of a
10 million acre cattle empire, GrantKohrs Ranch National Historic Site is
a working cattle ranch that preserves
these symbols and commemorates
the role of cattlemen in American
history.
Lewis & Clark
National Historic Trail
Between May 1804 and September
1806, 32 men, one woman and a
baby traveled from the plains of the
Midwest to the shores of the Pacific
Ocean. They called themselves the
Corps of Discovery. In their search for
a water route to the Pacific Ocean,
they opened a window onto the west
for the young United States.
Little Bighorn National Battlefield
This area memorializes one of the
last armed efforts of the Northern
Plains Indians to preserve their way
of life. Here in 1876, 263 soldiers and
attached personnel of the U.S. Army,
including Lt. Col. George A. Custer,
met death at the hands of several
thousand Lakota and Cheyenne
warriors.
Nez Perce National Historical Park
Nez Perce National Historical Park is
a park about a people, for all people.
It is not one place but many. Today
38 sites in Idaho, Montana, Oregon,
and Washington commemorate
the legends and the history of the

others. As you travel from site to site
you will come to sense the rich and
diverse culture of the Nimiipu.

Weekends are good times for family

family, visit museums and zoos, do chores
that everyone participates in, go on hikes
or bike rides or attend religious services.
On weekends children in the middle years
can usually be allowed a later bedtime
than during the week. Keep in mind that,
although family time is essential, it is
equally important for parents to set aside
some time just for themselves.

Your child should feel confident in his
ability to meet the challenges in his life.
This sense of personal power evolves
from having successful life experiences
in solving problems independently, being
creative and getting results for his efforts.
Setting appropriate expectations, not
too low and not too high, is critical to
developing competence and confidence.
