McVicker on Tuesday, May 24th at 12:30 p.m. where the balloon crew will present an interactive educational program. The program will be presented outdoors on the school grounds, weather permitting, to be inflated with hot air to its full 75-foot height. If the program needs to be moved indoors, the envelope is inflated with cold air so that students can walk inside it. Music Mondays At Millennium Park The free music series, Downtown Sound: New Music Mondays returns to Millennium Park for a third summer, featuring an eclectic mix of music discoveries, indie rock, pop bands and rock veterans. The series will include ten double-bill concerts on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. May 23rd through July 25th. For more information, call (312) 742-1168. ___________________ Wiencek Earns NIU Award Kathryn Wiencek, Master of Public Health, is the recipient of the Northern Illinois University Outstanding Woman Student Award of 2011. This award, established in 1980, is intended to foster the development of leadership among women students, and to encourage their participation in all facets of the university experience and in their communities. Award winners were judged on the basis of their developmental and university leadership roles, community involvement, awards and scholarships, goals and aspirations and obstacles overcome in the pursuit of an education. Recognition Ceremony For Chicago Police The Chicago Police Department held its 50th annual Officer Recognition Ceremony at the Chicago Hilton and Towers on May 5th. These awards include the Blue Star Award which is awarded to those officers that have either been shot or stabbed while in performance of duty and the Award of Valor which is awarded to officers that have demonstrated courage under fire. 9th District officers pictured with their present and past commander received the following awards: current Commander David M. The trip was the perfect bridge between topics taught in the classroom and history from the pages of their textbooks. From the historic birthplace of King Ferdinand of Spain, who commissioned Christopher Columbus’ trip that led to his discovery of the New World, to the Sistine Chapel in Rome, students were able to see many paintings and architecture throughout the European landscape. Medical Grant For Children The UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation is seeking grant applications from families in Illinois in need of financial assistance to help pay for their child’s health care treatments, services or equipment not covered, or only partially covered, by their commercial health insurance plans. Qualifying families can receive up to $5,000 to help pay for medical services and equipment such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, counseling services, prescriptions, wheelchairs, orthotics, eyeglasses and hearing aides. Children must be 16 years of age or younger, families must meet economic guidelines and have a commercial health insurance plan. Grants are available for medical expenses families have incurred 60 days prior to the date of application as well as for ongoing and future medical needs. The Illinois EPA presented Environmental Excellence Awards to four students during the State Science Exposition hosted by the Junior Academy of Science in Champaign on May 7th. The winners are: Outstanding Achievements in the Senior Division (grades 9 to 12) went to Brady Holst of Southeastern High School in Augusta for “The Future Fuel.” The Junior Division (grades 7 to 8) was won by Elizabeth Ringhausen of St. Francis/ Holy Ghost School of Jerseyville for “Earth vs. Water.” Second place in the Senior Division went to Bana Zayyad of the Aqsa School in Bridgeview for “How Strongly is Honey Affected by DDT?” Second place in the Junior Division was awarded to Alex Chovan of Wallace Grade School in Ottawa for “Future Fuel.” Criteria for the Environmental Excellence Award include issues such as addressing the prevention of pollution, the remediation of air, land or water, or analyzing the effect of pollution on the environment. Students whose projects were recognized for Outstanding Achievement receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond, a plaque and certificate.
