Devils Thump Grainger To Remain Perfect In District
BY TATE RUSSELL
SUN SPORTS WRITER
The Greeneville soccer team
had little trouble finding the
back of the net on Tuesday as
they beat Grainger 9-0 in a
District 2-A/AA matchup at
Burley Stadium.
“I thought the guys played
well today,” Greeneville coach
Jerry Graham said. “We wanted to come out again and keep
the intensity up, and I thought
we did a better job of that in
the second half than we did in
the first. The second half was
much better and I was really
pleased with how the guys
came out and played after half
time.”
The Devils (9-4-1 overall, 5-0
district) took a 5-0 lead in the
first half, using five different
goal scorers to do so. The feat
was made even more impressive because they did it without
their top attacker, Avery Porro,
who missed the game with an
injury.
“We don’t know how long we
are going to have to rest Avery
so it was nice to see goals come
from other teammates,” Graham said. “We also had Nic
(Lollar) out in the back and it
was nice to see that the defense
held solid even without him. To
be strong in those two thirds
of the field without those two
guys felt pretty good.”
Injuries and absences have
been an issue for Greeneville
this season, but with the postseason less than two weeks
away Graham feels his team is
rounding into form at the right
time.
“At this point in the year,
chemistry wise, we are really
developing continuity – we feel
that it is there,” Graham said.
“We’ve dealt with some injuries
and people have been absent
here and there. Now we’re
ready to get everybody together
and head to the postseason.”
Logan Davis opened the scoring for the Devils in the third
minute when he took a long
pass from the midfield and
worked to the right post where
he sent it by the keeper and
into the lower left corner of the
net.
