Meneruskan Semangat Setiakawan Di Kalangan Pegawai-Pegawai Angkatan Tentera Yang Telah Bersara
Continuing the Esprit-de-Corps Amongst the Retired Armed Forces Officers
SRL 01 / 2014
FOR MEMBERS ONLY
JAN - MAR 2014
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The first quarter for 2014 has not been too busy for us. We started the year with
a courtesy visit on Jen Tan Sri Mohd Sany bin Abd Ghaffar, (Bersara) - mantan
PAT, the most senior (in rank) retired Armed Forces officer still with us. This
was followed by the Chinese New Year lunch, hosted by our Chinese members
and other Chinese retired Armed Forces officers. We had to postpone our Annual
Forum which was scheduled during the quarter to another later date to cater for
the availability our Guest of Honour whom we have invited.
Our committee continued to be kept busy during the quarter. In addition
to the committee meeting and sub-committee discussions, the committee called
on the newKetua Pengarah JHEV and the new Commanding Officer, HAT Tuanku Mizan, to discuss matters
related to the administration of our retired Armed Forces veterans, in particular the retired Armed Forces
officers’ community. There are still some issues raised by our members that need to be addressed by JHEV
and HAT Tuanku Mizan.
On membership, I am pleased to welcome another 15 retired Armed Forces officers as new members
of RAFOC during the first quarter of the year 2014, thus increasing our membership total to 563 members
(less 32 who are no longer with us) as at 31 Mar 2014. Or membership is still small compared to the number
of the Armed Forces officers who have since retired or left the Service. I urge members to assist to get their
intake members who are still not members of RAFOC to register as members. We need to increase our
membership so that RAFOC can truly represent the retired Armed Forces officers’ community.
Financially, our fund is sufficient to keep us going for the year, with the surplus from our Annual
Dinner and other donations/contributions in 2013. However we need to improve our financial standing in
order to keep our activities going for the next few years. Our Honorary Treasurer has closed the account for
the year ending 31 Dec 2013 for audit, which will be presented to members at the coming Annual General
Meeting.
The next quarter will see two major activities to be organized by RAFOC - one will be our Annual
Golf amongst ourselves and the other, the Annual General Meeting for 2014. Members will be kept informed
on these two activities. I hope more members will turn up for our Annual General Meeting - an occasion for us
to deliberate on the direction and activities of our association for the year 2014/2015.
Thank you for your continued support in the activities of our association. Salam “Sentiasa Setiakawan!”
JEN TAN SRI DATUK AMAR MOHD GHAZALI BIN DATO’ MOHD SETH, (Bersara)
President

A DAY TO REMEMBER
– 14 FEBRUARY 1942
MALAYSIAN ARMY CELEBRATES ITS
“HARI TENTERA DARAT KE-81”
February 14 is a historic day
to the Royal Malay
Regiment – for that matter
to the Malaysian Army, to
the Malaysian Armed Forces
and to the Nation. It was on
this day in 1942 that Platoon
7, “C” Company, 1st
Battalion, the Malay
Regiment under Lt Adnan
bin Saidi, made the final
stand against the advancing
Japanese Army in Bukit
Chandu, Singapore.
Although heavily outnumbered, Adnan refused to
surrender and urged his men to fight until the end. They held
off the Japanese for two days under heavy enemy shelling
and shortages of food and ammunition. Adnan was shot but
carried on fighting until he succumbed to his injury.
On the next day, 15 February 1942, the British Army
surrendered to the Japanese Army. For the next four years
and six months, Malaya was under the Japanese occupation
until 12 September 1945, the day the Japanese Army in turn
formally surrendered to the British Army.
The Royal Malay Regiment battalions held a special
“Majlis Baca Yasin, Tahlil and Doa Selamat” in their camps
in remembrance of those in the regiment who fell during the
battle against the invading Japanese Army during World War
II.
Let us pause a while and remember this day and our
comrades before us who died defending the country. Let us
“doa agar Allah merestui pengorbanan mereka dan
meletakkan roh-roh mereka bersama mereka yang soleh lagi
dikasihiNya”. Al-Fatihah!
On 1 March 2014, the Malaysian
Army celebrated its 81st
Anniversary of its formation. It was
81 years ago on 1 March 1933 that
the first squad of the “Experimental
Company” of the Malay Regiment,
consisting of 25 selected young
Malay recruits, started their military
training in Port Dickson under
British Army instructors.
The idea to form an indigenous
Malay army started well before the
break of World War I. It took the
Malay Rulers and other prominent
Malay leaders more than 20 years to convince the British
Government to raise a local army. There have been fears by
the British “that the Malays, with their leisurely temperament
and lack of military traditions other than those of guerilla
warfare, would rebel against the discipline of the parade
ground and barrack-room”. It was not until it became too
costly to the British Government to continue having units of
the Indian Army in Malaya, that the idea to form a local force
came into being. On 23 January 1933, the “Malay Regiment
Bill” was tabled and passed by the Federal Council as
“Enactment No. 11”.
This first 25-man squad formed the nucleus of the Royal
Malay Regiment and the Malaysian Army today, 81 years later.
The Malaysian Army has grown in size and consists of various
regiments and corps with the participation of the other races
in the multi-racial units in the process. From a counterinsurgency force, it has transformed into a conventional force
with modern and updated equipment and vehicles.
Throughout the 81 years of its existence, it has seen
through World War II, the Japanese Occupation, the British
Administration, the Communist Insurgency, the preparation
for Independence, the formation of Malaysia, Konfrontasi,
May 13, the end of the Communist armed threat and the armed
intrusion in Sabah. The Malaysian Army has participated in
UN Peace Keeping Missions in a number of countries overseas
as an extension of the foreign policy of the country. Within
Malaysia, the Malaysian Army has continued to assist the local
authorities during national disasters and rural development
projects and recently in support of the “National Blue Ocean
Strategy” (NBOS).
Together with the Royal Malaysian Navy and the Royal
Malaysian Air Force, the Malaysian Army continues to be the
deterrent to would be aggressors and trouble makers to the
country, thus ensuring peace and stability in order for the
economic and social development of the country can continue
to be carried out.
For the retired Army officers, we should be proud to be
part of the Malaysian Army history and the contributions and
sacrifices that we have made to make the nation what it is
today.
We wish the present Army officers, “HAPPY 81stARMY
DAY” and do take care of the Army that we have left. Salam
“GagahSetia!”.

LAST SSC COMMISSIONING PARADE IN KTD
15 members of RAFOC led by Mej Jen Datuk Abd Kadir bin
Nordin, (Bersara), committee member, and three wives
attended the commissioning parade which was held at the Kolej
Tentera Darat (KTD), Kem Segenting, Port Dickson on
Saturday, 8 February 2014. The invitation to the parade was
done through RAFOC. Also present were four mantan PAT
and two mantan PTD, (all members of RAFOC) who were
invited individually as former Chief of Army by the present
Chief of Army. 60 Army officer cadets of SSC Intake 76, all
graduates with first degree, were commissioned on that day.
SPB Yang DiPertuan Agong and SPB Raja Permaisuri
Agong graced the parade with their royal presence with SPB
Yang DiPertuan Agong taking the royal salute. Also present
were the Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan, the Chief of
Defence Force, the Chief of Army and other 200 or so senior
officers from the three Services and their wives. Also present
were the parents and families of those who were to be
commissioned on that day.
After the marching out of the newly commissioned
officers to the tune of the “Auld Lang Syne”, the “formal”
closing of KTD was held with 502 officers from the various
intakes (serving) of various ranks marching onto the parade
square - four contingents in the uniforms of the officer cadets
of yester-years. Earlier, a pantomime was held on the parade
square depicting the life an officer cadet from the time he
reported to the college until his reporting to the various units.
It was real and nostalgic indeed.
After the parade the 60 young officers plus another 35
other Army officers and one Navy officer, who were
commissioned earlierwere bestowed with their individual
parchments by SPB Yang DiPertuan Agong at a ceremony
held in the Auditorium Sebatang Karah, KTD. Present were
the official guests and parents and families of those who were
commissioned.
In 1995, Divisyen Kadet, Maktab Tentera DiRaja (MTD),
was relocated to Ulu Tiram, Johor to facilitate the formation
of the Akademi Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATMA) in Kem
Sungai Besi, which later in 1999 renamed as Universiti
Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM). In January 1999,
Kolej Tentera Darat (KTD) was officially formed and Divisyen
Kadet, MTD was dissolved. In January 2012, KTD moved
from Ulu Tiram to its new and modern 87.3 acre camp by the
sea front - Kem Segenting, Port Dickson. The reorganization
and the roles of KTD under are being finalised.
Our RAFOC delegation was well looked after with thanks
to the Commandant KTD. Three were billeted at the 5-star
students’ rooms at the Pusat Pengaman Malaysia located next
door, the night before. Others chose to make their own
arrangement. It was a good opportunity to visit the new and
modern KTD. It’s a pity not that many members came.
