Dear Members and Invited Guests:
We hope you will join us in Puerto Rico for the Fall Meeting which will be held jointly with
the Iberoamerican Institute of Maritime Law, an organization of several hundred admiralty
attorneys and non-attorneys from Mexico, Central and South America, Dominican Republic, Puerto
Rico, as well as Spain and Portugal. The meeting will be held at the beautiful El Conquistador
Resort in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.
For the first time in the history of the MLA/IIDM some of the most distinguished maritime
maritime experts and other professionals of 20 Iberoamerican countries will be meeting with some
of the most recognized maritime attorneys for the United States, Canada and several European
countries.
The meeting format is designed to make the most of your time and includes 12 - 15 hours of
accredited Continuing Legal Education Programs, which will focus on significant issues for
members of both the MLA and the IIDM.
We are having a Presidents’ Welcoming Reception on Wednesday, a cocktail party Thursday
evening, a special night of food, drinks and music on Friday at a historic site in Old San Juan and
the traditional Dinner Dance on Saturday. We will also have golf, tennis, sailing, fishing activities
and a two-mile fun run and walk. There will be many opportunities for the members of the two
organizations and their guests to mix and get to know each other.
The MLA will again be encouraging its younger members to attend by offering a special
reduced rate for those who have been members of the MLA for less than ten years. The MLA is
offering those members a’ la carte ticketing to the evening events. We are excited to advise that the

attorneys, governmental authorities, port operators, corporate representatives of many companies,
registration fee and hotel room rates are the lowest in years and there are bargain airfares to San
Juan. You really should not miss this meeting!
We look forward to seeing you in Puerto Rico.

U.S. CLE Accreditation
12-15 hours of CLE will be offered. Additional CLE credits may be available at certain committee meetings. Final
CLE program topics and speakers are subject to change. Tulane ALI has partnered with the MLA for this program and
will prepare and submit CLE course credit applications for all applicable states and submit the CLE credit records to
the appropriate states. There may be a few states for which Tulane will not seek course approval because of the very
hefty approval fee charged by those states. In those cases, Tulane will prepare the necessary paperwork for the
attorney to submit to that state for the CLE Credit. Any person seeking CLE credits who has a genuine financial
hardship may apply in writing explaining the basis of his or her hardship, and, if circumstances warrant, may receive a
discount in the registration fee in accordance with the MLA’s financial aid policy. Contact Donald Radcliff, Chair,
Committee on Planning and Arrangements.
TENNIS
The tennis tournament will take place on Wednesday, October 30th at the resort’s tennis
courts. The event will be a Round Robin starting at 8:30 a.m. The early-bird registration
fee* is $50.00/person, including court fees, refreshments, balls and prizes. Racquets are
available for rent at the rate of $7.00. If there is enough interest, a “junior” tournament
will also be arranged at the same time.
Rental clubs (top of the line Nike) are available for $65.00 per standard set, $75.00 per
premium set and rental shoes for $20.00 per pair.
Food and Beverage: Players will receive 20% discount off regular menu pricing on food and
beverage purchased from the Golf Beverage Cart.
FISHING
On Thursday, October 31st, enjoy a morning of professional guided fishing in the blue
waters off San Juan’s Northern shore on 35’ ocean sport fishers (up to 6 anglers per
boat). All fishing gear, refreshments and gratuities are included in the trip price. Lines
will be in the water just 20 minutes from shore for Puerto Rico’s world renowned Blue
Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo and Mahi-Mahi. To live the passion and thrill of
big game fishing all fellow anglers must be in the lobby on Thursday, October 31st at
6:15 am to depart to Cangrejos Yacht Club (40 minute drive). Early-bird registration fee*
is $160.00, provided there is a minimum of 5 persons per boat. To ensure sufficient
boats and your spot, please register on or before September 29th.
FUN RUN/WALK
The Fun Run/Walk will take place on Friday, November 1st at 6:45 AM, beginning outside the spa and is available for all ages. For those who do not register in advance, registration will take place from 6:15-6:30 AM at the spa. Water, fruit and an event t-shirt will
be provided. The course is approximately two miles long. Winners will be announced for
men and women in the walk as well as the run. The early bird registration fee* is
$35.00/person.
SOCIAL AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

the run/walk. Access includes locker, lounges, spa fitness center, Jacuzzi, steam, and all

SOCIAL AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES CONTINUED
SAILING REGATTA
8
The regatta will be held in the waters off the southern tip of Isla Palominos which can be reached
by taking a short ferry ride from the El Conquistador marina. The boats will be the Hobie Wave, a
small beach catamaran (13’ length) that is easy and exciting to sail. One skipper can easily
handle this catamaran under Puerto Rico’s typical wind conditions (12-15 mph trade winds).
There should be four (4) boats available.
A skipper has the option to carry one (1) crew (with no penalty). The crew cannot handle the tiller or trim the sail.
The early-bird registration fee* is $50.00 per sailor. There will be two prizes, Sailing Champion,
MLA/IIDM 2013 Puerto Rico, and Sailing Runner-Up, MLA/IIDM 2013 Puerto Rico.
The registered skippers, crew, spouses, companions, significant others, and observers can enjoy
food, snacks, Medalla’s beer, Piña Coladas and Puerto Rican rum drinks as they wish at the Iguana’s Restaurant and/or at the beach bar. Food and beverages are NOT included. Spectators can
enjoy watching the regatta from the beach at no charge!

On the northeastern tip of the island in the municipality of Fajardo we find Las Cabezas de San Juan

“cabeza” meaning headland. The main tour is a two-hour trolley ride that guides you along the
reserve with three stops of interest. Among those are the boardwalk trail through a mangrove forest,
Playa Lirios and El Faro de Fajardo. Situated on the highest point of Cape San Juan, the stone
building was the second lighthouse erected on the island by the Spanish. Officially lit on May 2,
1882, it has been operating uninterrupted to this day.

Puerto Rico Museum of Art and Old San Juan Shopping or Historical Tour
Are you looking for a little quiet culture in the heart of San Juan? The PR Museum of Art (MAPR)
is a 130,000-square-foot neoclassical building from the 1920s formerly known as the San Juan
Municipal-Hospital. It is one of the biggest museums in the Caribbean and houses collections from
the 17th century. The journey start by a guided tour by one of the museum docents, starting with the
ground floor devoted to classic artwork. One wing contains a gallery with paintings, wood carvings
and religious articles from the 17th to 19th centuries. The opposite wing’s gallery has more recent
works from 1930-1960. After this artistic adventure, we are headed to Old San Juan – the oldest
city in the US. Guests will have an opportunity to do some shopping and have lunch on their own.
A popular option is to have our staff pre-arrange lunch at one of Old San Juan’s fine restaurants.

El Yunque Rainforest Walking Tour
Named after the good Indian spirit, Yuquiyu, and shelter to the Taino Indians for 200 years, El
Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. Spanning 28,000 acres and
reaching an elevation of 3,624 feet, the area receives over 100 billion gallons of rainfall each year. In
El Yunque you will see many unique sights and hear many unique sounds unsurpassed by any of the
natural wonders. Breathtaking views of feathery ferns, thick ropelike vines, white tuberoses, ginger,
miniature orchids and some 240 different species of trees are in abundance throughout the area. Home
to the Puerto Rican parrot, El Yunque is also a bird sanctuary and you can hear the wondrous strains
of these birds harmonizing with the tiny, inch-long coqui’s prevalent to Puerto Rico. Splashing falls
and cool shaded pools complement the total enhancement of the forest. For groups who like to
include a relaxing stroll along with their ride, we will provide knowledgeable step-aboard guides and
staff, who will take your party on a scenic 30 to 45 minute walk along one of may trails, while
pointing out the splendor of the surroundings for photo opportunities or just pure enjoyment. Please
wear tennis shoes or hiking boots. Don’t forget to bring along a towel and an extra T-shirt.

El Yunque Rain Forest is the only rain forest in the U.S. National Forest System. El Yunque named
after the good Taino spirit Yukiyu, receives over 100 billion gallons of annual rainfall and harbors

inch-long frogs called coqui, found only in Puerto Rico sing their sweet lullabies. After a scenic drive
to the start-off point and a brief orientation by one of our experienced step-aboard guides, you will
commence on an exhilarating 1 ½ hour hike through the wilderness of the rain forest. The actual hike
will be held on marked U.S. Forest Service trails. All our guides are experienced hikers, who are
familiar with the trails and areas.
Includes:
Round trip transportation and step aboard guide.

Refreshment: bottles of water and soda on the bus @ $5.00 + 15% per person.
