WESTERN ILLINOIS SWIMMING & DIVING
T
he Western Illinois swimming and diving team will look to have another successful
season after the Westerwinds finished second in The Summit League Championship
and the Leathernecks finished third. Western will be led by first-year head coach
Sean Raffile who comes to Western after serving as head coach at North East Conference
member Wagner College.
Diving Duo
The Leathernecks return both of their top divers in senior tandem Eric Campbell and
Anthony Holzhauer. Campbell earned The Summit League’s Diver of the Year award and
looks to compete against Holzhauer for the award this season. Campbell had a score of
305.70 on the 3-meter board and joined Holzhauer in sweeping the Summit League
Championship diving events last season. Holzhauer scored a record-setting 317.55 points
to win the 1-meter springboard at the championship meet. His score of 317.55 surpassed
the previous record of 311.40 set by Campbell in 2006.
Sophomore Sensations
Sophomore swimmer Jeff Davis will try to win the conference title this season in the 1650yard freestyle after taking a second-place finish in the event with a time of 16:21.23.
Kaley Rowe will be looking to break more school and conference records in only her second
season. In the 200-yard freestyle event, she finished with a time of 1:52.12, which is
the second-fastest time in Summit League Championship history and the fastest time at
Western.
Returning Record Holders
The Westerwinds will be bringing back all four members of the 200-yard freestyle relay
that broke the school record in the event last season. Amanda Smith, Rowe, Shannon
Nelson and Taylor Martin will look to break their time of 1:37.85, which placed second in
the championship meet.
Laura Dinkelmann is the reigning conference champion in the 200-yard butterfly event
with a time of 2:05.69 and looks to win the event again this season. Her time was the
second-fastest time in Western history.
Swimming Toward the Record Books
The Leathernecks also return a team of Jeff Davis, Craig Frederiksen, Dan Kurz and
Mike Regan in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The relay team shaved five seconds off its
best regular-season time to record a time of 1:26.99 in the event during the conference
championship where they finished fourth. If the relay team can shave off 3.78 seconds this
season, they will break the school record of 1:23.22 set back in 1992.

Head Coach Sean Raffile
S
ean Raffile brings seven years of coaching experience to Western Illinois University, four
of which come from Division I institutions. In three seasons as head coach at Wagner
College, his teams posted an overall record of 22-15, a .595 winning percentage, and a
conference record of 10-3. He also coached a total of 30 all-conference athletes in only
three seasons. While at Wagner, he also served as the university’s director of aquatics and the
director of the Wagner Aquatic Club.
Last season, his team finished third at the Northeast Conference swimming and diving
championship. During the 2006-07 season, he coached the NEC 100 butterfly title winner
who also qualified for the U.S. Open Championships in the 100 and 200 butterfly events. At
the end of the 2005-06 season, his team had set eight different school records.
At the conclusion of the 2006-07 season, his team finished with a 3.51 grade point average.
The GPA earned the team the sixth highest GPA in the nation for swimming and diving. At the
end of this season, Raffile had a swimmer named first-team academic all-district by ESPN the

Before coaching at Wagner, Raffile served as a volunteer assistant swimming coach at the
University of Georgia during the 2004-05 season under Jack Bauerle, the head coach for the
2008 USA Olympic women’s swim team. As an assistant at Georgia, his duties included ondeck coaching, meet management and recruiting. Raffile helped lead the 2005 Bulldog team
to a NCAA team championship. While in Athens, Ga., he also spent time as an assistant coach
for the Athens Bulldogs Swim Club and for the Bauerle Bulldog Swim Camp.
Prior to Georgia, he had assistant coaching experience at West Chester University (Pa.) and

head coach Richard Shoulberg, an assistant swimming coach for the 1988, 1992 and 2000
women’s USA Olympic teams.
Raffile started his coaching career as a student assistant swimming coach at his alma mater,
Southern Connecticut State University. As a student, he was a six-time NCAA All-American and
completed a bachelor’s of science degree in exercise science in 2003. He is currently finishing
a master’s degree in kinesiology from Georgia.
Raffile is an active member of the American Swim Coaches Association and the National
Strength and Conditioning Association. He is also a certified strength and conditioning
specialist, first aid certified and a certified pool operator.

Q & A with Raffile
What is your coaching philosophy?
I believe in providing an established environment that cherishes the process each studentathlete experiences. Whether that means the athlete must learn to adapt when things do not
go just the way they planned, or learn to be humble when success does come their way, it’s
all about the journey the student commits to and presses forward through the best and worst
of times. Ultimately these developed skills of patience and discipline will enable these young
men and women to be successful later in life. Hopefully, they look back on their swimming
experiences with fond memories of fast swimming and lessons learned.
What are your goals for the upcoming season?
I would extremely enjoy finishing the season with each swimmer achieving a personal best
time as well as finishing in the top half of the Summit League Championships in February.

WESTERN ILLINOIS SWIMMING & DIVING
What are you most excited about going into the 2008-09 season?
The overall feeling of excitement the team has already demonstrated this season is
temendous. The swimmers and divers all have positive attitudes and are looking forward to
working hard and improving this season. It’s pretty easy to get caught up with the excitement
this early on in the season.
What comments can you make on this year’s roster?
This team is without a doubt a good team that needs key members to step up and show
leadership. We have a number of top returners in our swimming and diving events, who
are Western record-holders, and I expect these individuals to guide our newcomers to their
maximum potential. We also need to have everyone stay injury free and stay healthy for us to
compete to our best abilities.
What type of student-athlete are you looking for?
I would say my prototypical student-athlete is someone who dedicates him/herself to
excellence in the classroom and in the swimming pool. I am a huge fan of the classic
overachiever, the student-athlete who might not necessarily have all the physical tools to be
the “ideal swimmer,” but has that x-factor that you know and love and will lay down in front of
traffic to help the team win. You can never have too many of those people surrounding you.
What have you learned from your mentor Jack Bauerle, the head coach for the 2008 USA
Olympic women’s swim team, that you can contribute to Western?
I think one of the most significant lessons I learned from Jack Bauerle is he always made
everyone feel important. From a personal standpoint, he made me feel like I was contributing
as a graduate assistant coach because he appreciated me helping out. This experience was
one of the best lessons I learned in my young coaching career. There wasn’t a day that went
by at Georgia when I didn’t learn something new or substantial. Jack had such a special gift
for making the athletes feel significant, no matter if the athlete was a NCAA Champion or a
walk-on, the athlete was always given attention, consideration and care. This type of care and
nurture improves the athletes self-confidence and self-worth. When the athlete feels good
about himself or herself, he or she are more productive with everything he or she choose to be
involved with. I may not do this as well as Jack, but I always strive to give extra care to bring
the best out of my athletes.

Western Illinois Leathernecks (M), Westerwinds (F)
Now in its 27th year as an NCAA Division I athletics conference, The Summit League is in its second year
under that name. In May 2007, the Presidents Council embraced the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that
places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all its student-athletes.
Included in the plan was the creation of a new image of the league and the unveiling of a new name. The
Summit League is the third name the conference has held as an NCAA sanctioned league.
The Summit League’s 10 member schools are Centenary College of Louisiana, IPFW (Indiana UniversityPurdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis), UMKC (University
of Missouri-Kansas City), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, South
Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. The member schools pride
themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes.
The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports, which include: baseball, men’s and women’s
basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball,
men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor
track & field, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball.
