Q&As with Gary Adkisson, Publisher
What is your business?
specialty publications
The Sentinel - Newspaper and
What makes your company unique or different from your
competition? Cumberland County focus with emphasis on
central and western areas of the county
How are you moving your company forward? We’re
developing new reader oriented products such as the business journal. We also plan to launch a Cumberland County
focused lifestyle magazine.
How did you end up in your current line of work? I began
working for the Tennessean while a college student. I enjoyed
it and continued post-college.
If you could give an aspiring entrepreneur one piece of
advice, what would it be? Build a network of support within
the business community and Chamber.
What makes you most proud of your company? Having the foresight to shift toward digital news, but not abandon
print.
What is the most challenging part of your job? Staying
abreast of all the things happening in our coverage area so
we may make the best decisions on what to cover [and] what
matters most.
What was the most unique job you have held? I worked
for a farm implement store. I set up new equipment for farmers and delivered them to the farm. Driving a combine over a
2-lane bridge was always challenging.
Tell us something about yourself that others may not
know.
My wife and I are avid cyclists. We ride a tandem and participate in rides all over the U.S.
