*1. ELABORATE RELIC MADE FROM A PIECE OF THE VICTORY THAT WAS ACTUALLY DAMAGED DURING
THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR. A beautifully constructed oak tea caddy that is
handsomely embellished with sterling silver plaques, feet, handles, etc. Top of
the hinged lid with a large silver plate that is professionally engraved with a
bust of Nelson surrounded by naval devices including a cannon, anchor, trident,
etc. Below that is inscription “Part of the head of the Victory’s fore Mast/THE
IMMORTAL NELSON”S FLAGSHIP/which received 27
shot/in the action/21st October 1805 off CAPE TRAFALGAR”. Mounted within the middle area of the inscription
is a beautifully fluted silver finial. Each side fitted with
lion head, drop ring, carrying handles. Large, shield shaped, key escutcheon and four
feet in the form of animal claws. Inside are two oak containers(one shown in photo)
with hinged lids that have silver plates engraved “B” and “G“ for black and green tea.
10”l. x 5 1/4”w. x 6 3/4” h. Condition very fine and original with natural wood having
acquired a beautiful age brown. This without a doubt the very best Victory relic I’ve ever handled or seen.
Wonderful with the direct Trafalgar connection.

*2. 19TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW TOOTH with a very attractive female portrait. Engraved
one side with a beautifully dressed young woman seated on the arm of of a chair with her
left elbow resting on its wingback. She has two leaves in her right hand. Above her is an
elaborate floral grouping with a string of leaves that cascade down either side of the girl.
5”h. x 2 3/8”w. Condition excellent. Wonderful deep age patina. Excellent quality, bold style,
engraving. Circa 1850.

*3. SCRIMSHAW BUSK WITH POLYCHROME SHIPS. Fine quality engraving with three separate panels all depicting ships. Top and lower sections with starboard views of British
frigates. Middle panel with
view over port stern of another frigate. Each scene divided
with chevron like designs. Very top and bottom with leafy vines that are above and below
hearts that are pierced with two crossed
arrows. Everything highlighted with red and bluish green coloring. Tapered shape with upper part being
rounded and 2”w. Length 14”. Condition excellent. I have a similar busk in my collection that is by the same
hand. Circa 1850.

SOLD
*4. WHALE IVORY PIE CRIMPER WITH TWO-TINED FORK. Pierce carved handle with clubs, hearts and diamond designs. 2” diameter serrated wheel also made of whale ivory.
Overall length 7 1/4”. Condition excellent although it may have had
some type of ring at the very end because there are two small holes
bored in each side. Nice age yellow coloring. Came to me with a letter having information about the ship “Archer” and the bark “Arab”
which the previous owner said always had been with the crimper.
The two voyages(1845 & 1850) written about in the letter were both
captained by M. Snell so it is possible he is the maker of this crimper.

SOLD

tapered octagonal form with a raised ring below it, Maximum

*7. LARGE TOOTH WITH POLYCHROME SHIP. One side of the tooth with a very high quality
engraving depicting a port view of an English frigate. All beautifully colored in red and blue.
8 1/4”l. x 3”w. Condition very fine. Light even age color throughout. A solid and heavy tooth.
Very handsome example by a quite skilled scrimshaw artist.

*8. UNUSUAL BRAND STYLE WHALE GUN WITH ENGRAVED IRON FRAME that has several
traces of silver plating still on it.
This gun may well be one made
by Allen Thurber & Co. because
it has several features that differ
from the Brand gun. The scroll
engraving style very much like
that found on other Allen
firearms of the same period. Also of note is the style trigger guard which differs from the
Brand but matches the one that is on one of the two known signed Allen Thurber & Co
whale guns. That signed one had no ramrod tube and this one has a brass tube that was professionally added sometime during its working life. 20” octagonal/round barrel. Overall length 36 3/4”.
Walnut stock with an iron buttplate. Brass sight at muzzle but none at breech end although there is a small
round plug where one would be located. Wood ramrod. Iron bomb lance with some original
black paint at end and the remains of the original rubber fins. Condition overall excellent
and as expected on these 19th century whaling guns. Quite an unusual variation with the
engraving, silver plating, added ramrod tube, etc. Would be interesting to know why it was
made so fancy.

*9. POLYCHROME TOOTH WITH A SCENE DEPICTING A BLACK NATIVE holding a tomahawk. Not sure what type native he is but he appears to be wearing a mask so possibly an
African native. Also could be south seas or even a black native American Indian such as a
black Seminole. Above him is a female portrait with a vine of leaves and flowers. On the
right and left side are flowers. Everything polychrome colored in shades of red and green.
6 1/2”h. x 2 1/2”w. Condition excellent. Fine age color. A very interesting piece of 19th cen3950.00
tury scrimshaw.
*10. RELIC CANE MADE FROM PERRY’S FLAGSHIP LAWRENCE. Simple wood walking
stick with l-shaped handle and a silver band that is professionally
engraved “Flagship ‘200’ Lawrence/Lieut O.H. Perry to/Gen. Harrison 1812/We have
met the enemy/and they are ours/George A. Porter and his family/to Judge Comley
Sr 1916”. Quickly did enough research to find that Judge William Henry Comley, Sr.
was from the Fairfield county area of CT and that he and his sons attended Yale.
Judge Comley died in 1917. Length 34 1/2”. Tip fitted with brass ferrule. Overall
condition fine.
SOLD 495.00
*11. LARGE PIPE WITH A BEAUTIFULLY CARVED AMERICAN EAGLE. Believe it is Meerschaum but has
such a beautiful dark color I’m not positive. Front of the
bowl relief carved with a large American Eagle behind a
shield. One claw grasping three arrows and in his beak
is a banner marked “LIBERTY”. Entire outer edge with
carved lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”. Bowl
4 1/2” tall. Overall length, including removable stem,
12”. Section where stem attaches has a silver band
around it. Not sure the stem is original but definitely is of same period and proportionally is
the correct size. Condition fine. Has a beautiful mixed brown age color. Carving quality outstanding and is a marvelous 19th century depiction of a patriotic American Eagle.

*12. DESIRABLE FORM NAVAL DIRK WITH A MERMAID BLOWING A TRUMPET. Fine example in superb
overall condition with its 11” curved blade retaining most all its
bright blue and gold finish.. Handle made from a solid piece of ivory
that has been finely checkered and carved.
Pommel done in Lion’s head motif. Guard with
discs at each end and inset with a figure of a mermaid blowing her trumpet. Overall length 16”.
Original maroon leather scabbard with three
brass mounts and two carrying rings. Condition overall excellent noting that pommel
and scabbard mounts retain only small areas of the original gilt finish. Scabbard has a
small tear but is fine as long as care is taken when putting the dirk back. Circa 1800. SOLD
7450.00
*13. FINE QUALITY POLYCHROME TOOTH engraved one side with two young children that
are well dressed in fashionable period attire. Clothing nicely highlighted in shades of red coloring. 5 1/2”h. x 2”w. Condition superb. Tooth was beautifully smoothed when prepared and
has acquired a fabulous deep age patina. Circa 1850. Very nice example.

*14. EARLY 5 DRAW, WOOD BARREL, SPYGLASS SIGNED “Berge London/late Ramsden”.
Length closed 10 1/2” with five draws extending to 42”. Cap for objective lens and pivoting
cover for eyepiece. Mahogany barrel with
brass reinforcing band in the center.
Condition overall good but showing wear
from use and age. Lens cap may be a period replacement or it may have been repaired during use. Eyepiece cover missing the tiny
brass pin for pushing it open. Optics produce strong upright images. Matthew Berge took over for Jesse
Ramsden upon his death in 1800. It is believed he only used the “late Ramsden” signature for a few years
SOLD
after Ramsdens death. Berge himself died in 1819.

*15. SCRIMSHAW TOOTH WITH A PAIR OF LOVE BIRDS sitting in a flowering tree. Very
nice quality, bold style, engraving showing the two birds on a branch and surrounded by a
frame of attractive flowers and leaves. Nice heavy tooth measuring 5”h. x 2 1/2”w.
Condition excellent. Light age patina. A quite appealing tooth by an artisan with above
average engraving skills.

SOLD
*16. HIGH GRADE, BRASS BARRELED, FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS. Lock plate with
maker’s name “BAYLEY”. Top of 14” l.
octagonal/cannon turned barrel with two
deep stamped proof marks and marked
“LONDON”. Brass trigger guard and finial all
boldly engraved with varying designs. Brass
butt plate nicely engraved on top return. Brass ramrod tubes
and wood ramrod also with brass tip. Nice deep engraving on hammer and at back end of the lock. 12 1/2” l.
triangular shaped snap bayonet mounted on top of the barrel. Gun length 29 1/2”. Walnut stock nicely
checkered at wrist. Overall condition very good but there is a fine crack at the wrist area of the stock that
had reinforcing pins put in a long time ago. This is most likely the work of James Bayley II who flourished
around London from 1790-1808.

*17. PAIR OF 19TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW WALRUS TUSKS. Each measuring 13 1/2”l. x 2”w. One engraved
with a female portrait at the bottom, a Crusader in the center
and a flower at the top. Other tusk with the same flower at the
top, a young girl playing in the center and the bottom with a
variation of seated Liberty reading a book while her right hand
holds a quill pen and rests on a globe and American shield.
Condition excellent. Tops with bored holes for hanging. They
also have wood dowels protruding from the bottoms for the purpose of displaying them standing on a base. They are easily

*18. LARGE SPERM WHALE TOOTH DONE IN THE MANNER OF THE EAGLE PORTRAITIST. Engraved one side with a large portrait of a seated female within a scalloped
frame border. Identical female as one pictured on page 40 in Hellman and Brouwer’s book
“A Mariner’s Fancy”. Nice size and shape measuring a little over 7”h. x 3”w. Condition
excellent. Fabulous deep age color throughout. Has a surface layer of dirt that can easily
be cleaned off if so desired. Circa 1840. A very attractive scrimshaw tooth. SOLD 3750.00
*19. VERY HIGH QUALITY BRASS SEXTANT IN A BRASS BOUND CASE. Signed “Thomas
Jones 62 Charing Cross London”. 7” l. flat brass index arm with swingaway magnifier attached. Silver scale and vernier. Three horizon glasses and four index mirror filters. Three telescopes, one with low and
high power eyepieces and three screw-on sun filters all fit neatly inside
the case. Removable boxwood handle also stores beneath the sextant
when not in use. The original case is of exceptionally high quality
being made of thick mahogany that is brass bound on all four corners
and around the entire border of the lid. Thomas Jones worked at the 62 Charing Cross
address from 1816 -1850 but in 1831 his son came in the business and it became Jones
& Sons. This unusual sextant likely quite early because there is a partial trade label in
the case where Jones designates himself “Pupil of Ramsden”. Jones instruments never
seem to have a standard pattern so he likely made individual designs to specific order.
Overall condition fine and very complete.
2985.00
*20. FINELY CARVED AND INLAID LADIES SCRIMSHAW WALKING STICK. All whalebone shaft with upper

of tooth with a ring of dot and leaf motifs. 5 3/8”h. x 2 3/8”w. Lower portion of
the tooth with a couple of sound age cracks. Tip of the tooth with chips missing from both sides that most certainly happened in the 19th century. Very
nice age color throughout.

Wood/of Lord Nelson’s Flagship/THE VICTORY/given by the Lords of the Admiralty/to Burnham Thorpe
where/HORATIO NELSON/was born Michaelmas Day/A.D. 1758”. Condition
excellent. Exact piece illustrated in Klamkin’s book “Marine Antiques” page
112. Nelson was born September 29th, 1758 which is also known as The Day
of Saint Michael and is a day observed as a feast by the Church of England.
Quite interesting that this piece was actually given by the Admiralty to the
SOLD
little town where Nelson was born. An unusual and very nice Victory relic.

*24. EARLY SCRIMSHAW TOOTH WITH AN AMERICAN SHIP. Nice big broad tooth with
one side having a large starboard view of an American ship. The water wraps around to the
back of the tooth where a spouting Sperm Whale is depicted with a flock of sea gulls
above. 6 1/4”l. x 3 1/4”w. Condition very good noting typical sound age cracks on the front
and back. Terrific golden age color. Circa 1830-40.
8450.00
*25. GOLD TOP PRESENTATION SWORD CANE MADE FROM PART OF THE CONSTITUTION DURING HER 1833-1835 RECONSTRUCTION AT THE BOSTON NAVY YARD. Small
gold top beautifully engraved “Part of the Frigate/CONSTITUTION/Presented by/Com: J.D.
Elliott/to R.E.W. Earle/1834”. Appears to be teak wood and is fitted
with a long brass ferrule at the tip. Also has two other gold inlays
over a hole where a wrist band would pass through. Overall length 35
3/4”. Triangular, 14” long, sword blade with some gilt foliate designs.
Elliott, at this time, was the commanding officer at the Boston Navy Yard. After her refit
Constitution entered upon a 3 year tour as the Flagship of Commodore Jesse Elliott in
the Mediterranean protecting trade and maintaining good relations. Elliott was a somewhat controversial figure and such a strong Jacksonian that during the Constitution
refit he mounted a full figurehead in the likeness of Andrew Jackson which infuriated
the local population. Ralph Eleaser Whiteside Earle was a well known American portrait painter who did over
two dozen portraits of President Jackson. He became Jackson’s closest friend and companion and ultimately
died at Jackson’s home in 1838. Obviously Andrew Jackson was the common thread between Elliott and
Earle. Overall a very interesting and quite historic Constitution relic.

Widmann/Philadelphia”. Opposite side with fouled anchor,
American Indian and blade maker name “Weyersberg Brothers/Solingen”. Basket pattern guard with pierced
design depicting an American Eagle atop an anchor. Acorn finial at the end.
Reverse with pierced and hinged counterguard. White sharkskin grips with triple
wire wraps. Overall length 36”. Black leather scabbard with ornate mounts having a
raised American shield on the top and a raised fouled anchor on the middle. The
lower drag is not the original but is from another 19th century American sword.
Condition overall good with handle and top two mounts retaining about 60-70% of
their original gilt finish. Blade with two very small nicks toward the bottom.
Etching all bold and clear. Unusual to find this style navy sword with the Widmann mark as most seemed to
be by Horstmann. Frederick Widmann advertised as a sword maker from about 1840, He died in 1848. Very
handsome looking with the bold Eagle pommel. Were this sword in mint to near mint condition it would
command about 10k. This one modestly priced at

neatly penned 4 page letter dated Oct, 26th 1861. Written “On Board Ship Julian at
Sea” by Captain S.P. Winegar to the ship owner “William Hathaway Esq”. Mentions
“that I made a great mistake in going on
Kodiak”, “the Arctic whaling is all a lottery.
There is no management about it. Some ships will go there and fill
and another ship will go with just as good a crew in every respect
and do nothing......therefore I say it is all luck”. Also talks about
vicious rumors being spread by “mean low bred scoundrels”. Most
all the content seems to be rationalizing why the voyage has not been successful. Condition excellent and

driver that stored inside the case. The Spencer & Co. firm is listed as an alternative
name for Spencer Browning & Co. which flourished around London from 1840-1870. This sextant would date
between 1859-1862 because those were the only dates John Kehew was at the 49 Water Street address. After

port view that also includes the vessel’s stern. Both vessels flying the Union
Jack. 5 1/8”h x 2 3/4”w. Condition fine. Excellent age color throughout. This

Deringer in America”. James Monroe Jones
has quite an amazing history having been born in the Carolinas of a father
who ultimately bought the family out of slavery and then moved them to
Ohio. His four sons all attended Oberlin College where J. M. Jones, the eldest, graduated in 1849 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was the fourth
African American to achieve this honor. He later moved to Chatham, Ontario,
Canada which had a thriving community of African American residents and
abolition sympathizers as well as an important Underground Railroad terminal. It was also the town where
abolitionist John Brown planned his raid on the Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, arsenal. J. M. Jones participated with John Brown in planning that raid. There exists a few Canadian publications with much more fascinating historical information about Jones. The August, 2012 issue of “Man at Arms for the Gun Collector”
contains a lengthy article about Jones and period photos of him. The Library of Congress has a letter dated
1861 from Jones to President Lincoln giving him advice on the reconstruction of the south. There are very
few examples of Jones work known to exist. There have been auction results in the $16k range for a Jones

are all inlaid with diamond and circular pieces of whale ivory. There are a total of 30 of
these inlays. The very top decorated with a shallow accessory cup with an incised red
wax line. Four, claw style, whale ivory feet. Overall height 6 1/2”. Condition very good
noting that some of the red wax may have been replaced and a few of the whale ivory
pins that hold the spools may be replacements. From the Bill Boylhart collection and a

dress. To either side of her is a garland of leaves and over her head a laurel wreath containing
the letter “E” in olde English style. Below the wreath are crossed English and French flags.
Dress with subtle blue polychrome coloring. Inside of the bottom of the tooth engraved with

*46. EXTREMELY RARE AND VERY FINE AMERICAN SAILOR’S EMBROIDERED SEA BAG.
Nice large size measuring approximately 18” w. x 36” l. Made of double thick linen that is
beautifully constructed using multiple triangular and diamond shaped panels that are joined
together at the seams using several different colors of piping. Around
the top are five applied fouled anchors in alternating red and black colors. Around the center are four applied stars also in alternating red and
black colors. Neatly and meticulously hand embroidered in the very center is the owner’s name “J. S. MISSROON”. At the top is a very intricate
draw cord closing system that has numerous fancy rope work knots, a 1 1/2” d. whale
ivory slide for cinching the bag closed and a small, tear-shaped, lignum vitae deadeye
at the very end. Condition of everything remarkably fine and about near perfect. All the
colors still very vivid. This exact bag illustrated page 290 in Flayderman’s “Scrimshaw
and Scrimshanders” and on page 122 in Welles Henderson’s book “Jack Tar A Sailor’s
Life”. John S. Missroon had a long and successful career in the U.S. Navy making midshipman in 1824, Lieutenant in 1833, Commander in 1855 and Commodore in 1862.
He died in 1865. These bags represent the very best in nautical Americana. Few were
done this elaborately and none of them had a high survival rate due to heavy use under
harsh conditions. This bag likely so cherished by Missroon that he probably never put it to daily use and
always took fine care of it for, perhaps, sentimental reasons. Only a handful of these known to exist with
this being one of the finest examples I’ve ever seen.

*47. EXTREMELY RARE WHALEBONE TUB bound together with two, 3/4” wide, copper bands. Nice large
size and very well constructed likely by the ship’s cooper. Tapered, oval shape
using 14 separate slats of nearly 1/4” thick whalebone. Top edges done with continuous scallop design. 11 1/2” l. x 8” w. Tub height 4 5/8” with two end handles
being 6 3/4” high. Solid whalebone bottom with inside engraved with a large
starboard view of a British ship under full sail. Condition excellent noting that a
few of the peened copper pins that attach the bone to the copper band have been
replaced. Also there are a few stains on the inside of the bottom that somewhat
cloud the engraving of the ship. They appear to be from some type of acidic fruit
that may have sat in there “back in the day”. All the bone and copper with desirable age color throughout. Circa 1840. A rare opportunity to own a scarce and important piece of 19th century scrimshaw. Very few examples of this scrimshaw form known to exist.

*51. VERY LARGE PAIR OF POLYCHROME TEETH depicting young females in
Victorian attire. Over the years I’ve had several examples by this artisan including
the “Tennis Lady” tooth depicted on page 57 in Flayderman’s “Scrimshaw and
Scrimshanders”. A few also had an artist’s symbol added that was in the form of a
Union Jack. This pair far and away the largest I’ve come across by the artist.
They are almost completely solid and measure 7”h. x 2 1/2”w. Each tooth with
lovely portraits of fashionable young females all meticulously engraved and colored in varying shades of red and blue. Condition excellent. Circa 1860. 5800.00

Captain/FREDERICK MULLIN/as a token of Respect/Phila April
21st 1845”. Lock plates nicely engraved
with scroll designs, Pheasants and the maker’s name “Hollis Brothers & Co”. Top of
the rib between barrels scroll engraved and has importer’s name stamped in “SPANG &
WALLACE PHILADA”. Also in ornate lettering “London Fine Twist”. 29” long damascus
barrels with inset German silver bands at the breech. Wonderful engraved
hammers with Dolphin heads at the end. Fully engraved steel trigger
guard with long finials. Steel butt plate that extends over the top of the walnut stock is also
nicely engraved. Underside fitted with hinged steel door with engraved German silver surround
for cap storage. Fine checkering at the wrist, Original wood ramrod with horn tip. Overall
length 46”. Condition excellent. Listings show Hollis Bros as gunmaker’s from Birmingham
who did put London markings on their guns. Spang and Wallace were Philadelphia gunmakers
and apparently importers from 1830-1856. I’ve only attempted enough research to find that the Patterson
Guards were one of several militia groups being put together in Philadelphia just before the outbreak of the
Mexican War. Further research may produce an interesting story or history of Captain Mullin.

and actively engaged in Sperm Whaling. In the foreground there
are four manned boats in various stages of capturing whales. Off

the whaling activity. This piece has been in my own collection for over 12 years. Fine, fine example of this
scrimshaw form.

*55. FANNY CAMPBELL THE FEMALE PIRATE CAPTAIN is the scene depicted on the front
of this nice 19th century tooth. Classic scene that was copied from one of the pamphlets
containing variations of this image and the story of the fictional female pirate. For more
information see Stuart Frank’s new scrimshaw book “Ingenious Contrivances Curiously
carved....” page 111 and Flayderman’s “Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders” pgs 78-79. This
carver’s version of Fanny Campbell done using soft polychrome colored shades of red, blue
and green. Nicely shaped and smoothed tooth measuring 6”h. x 2 3/4”w. Mounted on a

century in Port Huron, MI. There was also a schooner called C.G. Meisel that hailed
from Port Huron. Overall condition fine. This exact cane illustrated in Klamkin’s

*58. UNUSUAL SCRIMSHAW PIE MAKING TOOL WITH FIST AND SERPENT
HANDLE. Have seen something similar to this on the opposite end of a
crimper but have never come across anything quite like this piece. The working end quite intricately made with 12 short protruding tines that surround a
relief carved flower. I believe it works in a similar way as a butter mold that
was used to decorate home made butter. This would create 12 venting holes
and a floral design in the top piece of pie crust. The curved handle is carved to resemble an
arm with a clenched fist that is grasping an entwined serpent. Overall length 5”. Condition very good but one small tine is missing
and a tiny piece that was the upper part of the snake’s mouth also gone. It
would probably be worth restoring these two tiny bits because this is such a
nice thing. Piece has acquired a wonderful golden age patina. Circa 1840-50.
Quite a unique piece of 19th century scrimshaw.

stock with checkered grip. Overall length 5 1/4”. Condition very nice with
case colors present and only a few mild bruises scattered throughout. Barrel
now deep grey mixed with brown. Nathaniel and John Curry inherited the

maximum width 2 1/2”. Condition very fine noting small amounts of scattered wax loss that really does not
at all detract from the teeth. Excellent age patina. I know of two other pair and a single tooth with near identical subject matter by this same artist. One pair is in my own collection. One pair and the single have the
identical vessels but are captioned below “Columbia”. These teeth representative of the finest in 19th century patriotic scrimshaw. Wonderful nautical Americana. The pair

*73. FINE PAIR OF SCRIMSHAW TEETH WITH MAKER’S INITIALS. Nice large
pair with one tooth engraved one side with several ships
engaged in a sea battle. Within the water on the lower right
are initials “I. W. Y.”. Reverse with recipients name, “For Wm

Reverse with initials “M. P. . . e”. 6 5/8”l. x 2 3/4”w. Both teeth
with light polychrome coloring in red and blue. Even though
they differ somewhat in size they are absolutely a matched
pair taken from the same whale jaw. The shorter one had more cut from the bottom when
prepared. Condition of both very fine. Teeth were beautifully smoothed and polished by the maker and have
now acquired a wonderful golden age color over all their surfaces. This is the second time
I’ve had teeth with these initials....the first tooth was offered in my catalog #36, item #180.
The work has many features of examples by the anonymous artisan referred to as the
Naval Engagement Engraver. I feel these could be some of his earlier work. They appear to
be by the same hand as the example illustrated on page 102 in Stuart Frank’s new scrimshaw book. The subject matter, initials and names make these a fine and very interesting pair of 19th century teeth.

*81. 19TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW TOOTH engraved on one side with a starboard view of a sailing ship.
Looks to be quite early and could be English because the hull of the vessel done
in the deep, intaglio style, engraving that is often found on British scrimshaw.
The lower, waterline, portion of the hull colored in a greenish tone that appears
to be original because there are a few highlites of the same color on the masts.
Off the ship’s stern is a small pilot boat and in the water off the bow a fish jumping. 6 1/4”l. x 3”w. Condition fine although some pigment missing from the
deeply engraved areas. Light, even age patina throughout. Circa 1830-40.

*84. ENGRAVED PANBONE by the artisan referred to by Stuart Frank as the “panbone engraver”. There are
examples of his work illustrated in Janet West’s scrimshaw book as well as
in Stuart Frank’s new scrimshaw book. Very nicely engraved scene depicting starboard view of a whaleship backwinded while cutting-in a whale that
is along side the vessel. Off the bow is a whaleboat that appears to be towing another boat or a whale. Above that is a Sperm Whale with a waif flag.
In the background is another sailing vessel and a mountain. Within the
framed border below the scene is engraved “FLENSING THE WHALE”. I do
not believe this to be by the artist’s hand but something added later. I
doubt it was ever done to enhance the piece but likely just to describe the activity depicted. In no way does
it harm or detract from the piece. 5 3/4”h. x 10 3/4”w. Condition fine but with usual warping found on these
thin pieces of bone. Beautiful age yellow throughout. Nice, strongly engraved, example of this scrimshaw
form.

*93. PRESENTATION SWORD CANE WITH A SILVER KNOB....MADE OF
WOOD FROM THE CONSTITUTION. Very ruggedly constructed from what
appears to be teak wood that was fitted with a large metal ferrule at the tip
and an ornate silver knob with engraved inscription. “UNITED STATES WARSHIP CONSTITUTION/1812/Huntington to Morrill/1879”. Overall length 34 1/2”. Length of
sword blade 26”. Condition overall fine noting a very shallow slice of
wood missing from section where sword blade slides into its lower section. This is very
old and uniform and almost appears to be there purposely. Quite certain this was given
by Charles Lathrop Huntington to Anson P. Morrill. Huntington was a Civil War hero at
Battle of Mobile Bay where he took over for his wounded commander. He received a
sword and promotion for his bravery. In 1875 he was nominated by Grant to be a commander in the Navy. Morrill was Treasury Secretary under Grant.

*96. HANDSOMELY CARVED SCRIMSHAW CANE WITH LARGE CLENCHED FIST
HANDLE. All whalebone shaft spiral carved, almost its full length, to resemble a
Narwhal tusk. Very upper portion with deep incised diagonal designs. Lower 4” plain tapered.
Brass protective tip. Whopping, l-shaped, whale ivory handle 4” long and carved into clenched fist including
the wrist details. Where the handle and shaft join is an ornate gold band with professional engraved name “H. Musson”. Also
marked “8ct C.H.”. I am not 100% positive the
shaft and handle have always been together
and would have to remove the gold band to
know for sure. Both pieces are guaranteed
19th century carvings and close inspection
shows they have been together for a long, long time, if not always. I just don’t want to ruin the gold band to
find out so will offer it at a price based on it being, at the very least, a marriage of two very high quality
antique parts. Regardless this is a fine stick.
