Introduction
T
he Principality of Asturias brings together a great diversity of landscapes, traditions
and cultural displays with the e xtraordinary capacity to appear as a per fectly
integrated set. It is precisely this mosaic which makes Asturias a truly unique land worth
discovering.
Its steep cliffs, fine-grained sand beaches, plentiful rivers and mighty mountains almost
touching the sky, form the skin of Asturias, always covered by an intense green comprising
all its shades. Yes, "skin" because Asturias is a land tha t breathes and is alive, an everchanging territory which, for thousands of years, human beings have made their home
and where they have left a perpetual imprint of their history.
The Asturian land proudly shows off its breathtaking nature and shelters its millenary
legacy that prevails in the memory, culture and heritage of all Asturians. It is precisely
them who behold a large part of the essence of this land, as Asturias is also a paradise
thanks to the hospitality and open nature of its people.
Discovering Asturias means getting lost throughout its land, landscapes and periods,
mixing with its people and participating in its fiestas as one more. Each part of this land,
built by nature and moulded by mankind, is a thrilling celebration of life to which you are
always invited.

A Natural Paradise
A Real Adventure
A
sturias is nature in its pur est state; it means
vibrating upon finding the na tural wonders
that live on in this land. Welcome to a Paradise to
which one can always return.
Not all one can see is wild , there is much more:
each landscape is the result of century after century
of ecological balance in which people have known
how to look after their habitat. That is one of the
greatest values of the natural spaces of Asturias, as
they have been preserved up until our days thanks
to human activity which, far fr om destroying its
environment, has moulded it to bring more life.
Asturias is a land of g reen spaces treasuring a
great natural and cultural wealth and variety, leading
over a third of its territory to be protected and the
UNESCO to recognise six large areas of Asturias with
the "Biosphere Reserve" qualification.
Here are mountains over 2,600 metr es high,
chasms penetrating more than 1,500 m in to the
depths of the earth, plentiful rivers, forests, beaches,
routes and pa ths where adventure is a waiting.
Asturias is full of professionals offering the possibility
of living this Natural Paradise with all five senses,
unrepeatable experiences taking one to new levels
of enjoyment.
Descents in canoes, canyoning, rafting, gorgewalking, climbing, horseback routes, mountain trips,
mountain biking, canoeing, surf, potholing, skiing…
for all ages and difficulty levels, you choose.
TOUR ANY OF THE ROUTES of the
Biosphere Reserve of Las Ubiñas-La Mesa
and enjoy a Natural Park right in the middle
of Asturias.
Asturias as a whole is available for you to tell what
you have seen and, more importantly, what you
have lived.
Try not to miss any of the six Biosphere Reserves
during your journey. Remember to visit the Picos
de Europa National Park, where you will discover
the legendary deeds of King Pelayo, the Sanctuary
of Covadonga and the mythical Lakes. Travel along
the paths running through the Somiedo Natural
Park and enjoy its meadows; there you will feel the
temptation to escape from everything and take a
turn in your life to go back and live like the mythical
“vaqueiros de alzada” (the nomadic cowboys with
their herds). Do not miss the Natural Park of Fuentes
del Narcea, Degaña and I bias, where you may
observe brown bears. Go the Osc os-Eo Region,
where time seems to have come to a standstill at a
moment of absolute peace. Visit the Natural Park of
Redes and get to know the birth of the mythical
river Nalón, without forgetting the chance to be
impressed by the awesome peaks in the Na tural
Park of Las Ubiñas-La Mesa.
Together with these great natural spaces, Asturias
offers other places with very special environmental
and landscape v alues: from the pr otected
landscapes of Cape Peñas and natural reserves, such
as that of Barayo or the Villaviciosa estuary, to natural
monuments like the Da wn Route, the Mountain
Pass of Las Xanas or the Waterfalls of Oneta. Asturias
as a whole is a true Natural Paradise to be discovered
and enjoyed.
ENTER A WORLD OF IRON AND FIRE and tour the mallets,
blacksmiths and forges found along the rivers running
along Los Oscos and get to know the Biosphere Reserve
leading to the Eo estuary.
VISIT THE BIRTH OF RIVER NALÓN and let
yourself be surrounded by some of the most
valuable ecosystems of the Cantabrian
Mountain Range in the Redes Park.

T
he colour of Asturias is green, but also blue
when we look to the north, to the sea. Here,
the sound of br eaking waves involves many
seafaring legends and fiestas indicating the path to
be followed along the cliffs, the harbours, the dunes
and the estuaries such as that of the Eo, Navia, Avilés,
Villaviciosa, Ribadesella...
Along our r oute, this pa th leads us fr om the
western coast, marked by villages and towns with
seafaring reminiscences such as Tapia, Viavélez,
Puerto de Vega, Luarca or Cudillero, up until the
mouth of the Nalón estuar y, on the central coast,
where the pr ints of ear ly mining and industr ial
development come together with wide sandy areas
where one can bathe, rest or practice sports activities
such as surfing.
Continuing towards the east and, after visiting
Cape Peñas, which is the nor thernmost point of
Asturias and an unbea table mirador of the
Cantabrian coast, we will go beyond the dunes of
the Villaviciosa estuary, where a path crossing gentle
meadowlands and Casonas (large houses) of
Indianos (wealthy emigrants returning to South
America) informs about the territories of Colunga
and Caravia. This landscape of small palac es
continues along the sandy area of Santa Marina, in
Ribadesella, near the dinosaur print deposits Punta’l
Pozu or the cliff of Tereñes. A short distance away,
in Llanes, the megalithic constructions and those
of the Indianos share their well deserved fame with
the beautiful beaches. From here we continue with
our trip until reaching Ribadedeva, where the Tina
Mayor estuary separates Asturias from the
neighbouring Cantabria.

The Villages
The Essence of Tradition
T
he true essence of Asturias awaits us
when visiting its villages , located
deep in na ture, in a landscape full of
shades, where cultural wealth and variety
is revealed through multiple facets.
Asturian villages spread throughout the
geography, sketching impossible
itineraries over the mountains. They are
points connecting civilization and nature,
constituting the clearest example of what
sustainability means. Its inhabitants feel
that, not only their homes , but the
fountains, paths, pastures, forests and
rivers are also their own. They know their
way of life means nature itself.

The architectural diversity of Asturian
villages is bor n from the variety of the
ecosystems and landscapes they are in. Its
cultural displays, defined by the times and
rhythms of the field and sea labour, have
sculpted the char acter of its people .
Traditions, in the strict sense, are preserved
in its villages , where one will be luck y
enough to delve into them as, if hospitality
had a geog raphical origin, this w ould

mbracing River Eo, this coastal area stands out
as a pr ivileged mirador forged by the
architecture and ambiances of centuries gone by.
The grandeur of the old cit y centre of Castropol,
declared a Heritage of Cultural Interest, is impressive
after being there and seeing it fr om inside. San
Tirso de Abres and Vegadeo forecast the more
abrupt relief commencing further to the south,
offering two routes leading to the secrets of this
region: El Mazo de Meredo Route and the Railway
Route from Villaodrid to Ribadeo.
Entering Taramundi and Los Oscos (San Martín,
Santa Eulalia and Villanueva) you delve into a
completely different world. The tradition here is life
and pride, probably the closest to an idealised rural
world you had ev er dreamed. The amazing
ethnographic ensemble of Os Teixois, the HouseMuseum of Cutlery, the Museum of the M ills of
Mazonovo, the Br ead Ecomuseum, Sargadelos
Marquis Birth House Museum… all these will give
you the keys to enjoy a land which is tradition and
legend.
River Navia is a geog raphical and cultur al
milestone marking for centuries the lands through
which it runs. Grouped in the Navia Historical Park,
eleven municipalities reveal their landscape and
culture. Navia, town and council with the mouth of
the river giving it its name, where a great fiesta is
held around its International Swimming Descent,
preserves vestiges of its past with looked-af ter
samples of the lar ge Indiano houses and, on its
coast, we find the small fishing village of Puerto de
Vega, a real treasure to be discovered. Coaña evokes
legends, one of the most po werful and best
preserved castros of the peninsula, which can be
visited. In El Franco, with its Andía Caves, you can
track the remains of the Roman gold mines.

Your Escapade to the West
An Archaeological and Ethnographic Reserve
And there is also Tapia de Casariego, whose
capital maintains the char m of fishing villages .
Leaving behind the coastal municipalities, the Navia
Historical Park goes to the south, where you cannot
stop visiting the Oneta Waterfalls in Villayón or the
Castro de Pendía in Boal, while in Illano and Pesoz
you will be astounded by the traditional architecture
of villages like San Esteban de los Buitres and Argul.
Grandas de Salime is the great point ending this
tour along the history and nature surrounding Navia:
it is essential to visit the Ethnographic Museum of
Grandas and the C astro del Chao de S amartín in
your escapade to the west.
La Firbia (one of the waterfalls at Oneta), Villayón
The vaqueiros de alzada are a c ommunity of
herdsmen, located to the west of Asturias, who
maintain peculiar customs which take them to the
category of a myth regarding all that considered
Asturian. Five municipalities have the privilege of
keeping part of their soul vaqueiro. Cudillero, with
its capital, literally a hive of fishing housings hanging
over the harbour, is an icon for all Asturians. Valdés,
whose capital - Luarca - proudly reaches out into
the sea with its lighthouse and cemetery –belonging
more to the sea than to the land -, houses the Giant
Squid Centre, the most impor tant exhibition of
great cephalopods in the world. The municipality
of Salas is stately, as testified by the historical set
of its capital or the samples of large Indiano houses
of localities such as Malleza. Tineo, whose capital
is a Heritage of Cultural Interest, treasures more
secrets, the same as the Gold Museum of Navelgas,
where you can try out gold panning, or the Vaqueiro
Museum of Naraval. Allande closes off this region
along the S outh, with such br eathtaking and
amazing landscapes as those of Valledor or with
the rural architectural jewels of the villages of
Fonteta or San Salvador.
The Asturian southwest is the natural domain of
the Fuentes del Narcea, the meeting point for the
municipalities of Cangas del Narcea, Degaña and
Ibias. Cangas is the noble village par e xcellence,
dotted with great noble palaces, in a municipality
housing the M onastery of C orias and whose
villages are real challenges t o the f ormidable
nature. Degaña and Ibias are the land of
Cunqueiros and Tixileiros, wood craftsmen with
their lathes, but also of pallozas (circular dwellings
with ceilings out of vegetation). Nature overwhelms
the senses in this land housing the m ythical
Muniellos Forest.

CAPE PEÑAS
is a geographical accident and a landscape surprise forming the
municipalities of Gozón and Carreño. At the first one you will be
amazed by the cliffs at the foot of the Cape Peñas lighthouse and
visit the magnificent Maritime Museum of Luanco. Carreño houses
in Mount Areo the most important la tumular necropolis in the north
of Spain and in Candás, its capital, you can recognise the life in a
fishing village where the canning industry marked its 20th century.
Cape Peñas
Your Escapade to the Centre
Much more than Cities
T
he centre of Asturias houses the main
three cities of A sturias, while also
having room for natural spaces of
surprising beauty and unique samples of
the history which shaped this land, such as
most of the pre-Romanesque monuments
or the t estimonies of the ear liest
industrialisation and the mining.
The mouth of river Nalón is a space of
singular beauty where Soto del Barco
with its fishing village of S an Juan de la
Arena, Muros de Nalón with the Harbour
of San Esteban, a real industrial heritage
jewel, or Pravia with its old historic centre,
declared a Heritage of Cultural Interest,
and the elegant locality of Somao with
"Indiano" roots, all c onfigure an en tire
territory to be discovered and observed
while travelling along the Los Miradores
Route in Muros de Nalón.
Further to the south, a t otal of eleven
municipalities group around the Camín
Real de La Mesa, a historical path running
across Asturias from the Nor th to the
South. The capital of Grado is a magnificent
example of a commercial village with an
interesting architectural set. In Candamo
you can visit the Cave of La Peña (World
Picu Polio, Turón

Heritage), and in Las Regueras you can
go to the Roman baths of Valduno, to the
pre-Romanesque church of San Pedro de
Nora, and to interesting remains of the
bunkers and casemates of the Civil War.
Even further to the S outh, the r elief
becomes more abrupt and the mountain
starts dominating the landscape. Here we
find Santo Adriano with its pr e Romanesque church in Tuñón, Proaza,
where the village of Bandujo stands out
with its medieval imprint, together with
Yernes and Tameza , where you can
discover beautiful meadows, Belmonte
de Miranda with El M achucu Roman
Forge, working since the 18th century. At
the limit with León we find the councils of
Quirós, with its E thnographic Museum
and its amazing Tejo in Bermiego, Teverga,
with its A bbacy of S an Pedro and its
magnificent and unique Prehistoric Park
and where constructions with vegetation
ceilings (teitos) are preserved and
meadows still transmitting the echoes of
transhumance. Several of these councils
are crossed by the Senda del Oso (Bear’s
Path), a pedestrian and cycling route that
is a must.
Les Xanes Route, Santo Adriano
Once again t owards the c oast we find the
municipalities surrounding city of Avilés. Castrillón
stands out with its c ollection of beaches and
historical vestiges such as the rock where the Cross
of Victory was made, in the m ythical Castle of
Gauzón, or the first vertical mining exploitation of
Asturias within the setting of Arnao. The council of
Corvera de Asturias offers possibilities for sports
in its Trasona reservoir, apart from housing
interesting heritage elements such as Illas.
Around river Nora there are three municipalities
to be disc overed. Llanera has a long hist orical
sequence you can discover via the "Route of Palaces".
Noreña is a true gastronomic reference in Asturias
and has a small , pleasant and looked-af ter old
historic centre. Siero has notable e xamples of
artistic-historical heritage distributed throughout
the council and allows for appreciating the first
stages of industrialisation along the " Jovellanos
Mining Route".
Again towards the south, along the main r oad
entrance to Asturias, is The Central Mountain. In
this territory, made up b y 6 c ouncils, history,
ethnography, industrial heritage and nature are
capable of coming together in a really surprising
manner. In Ribera de Arriba we find Bueño, a
village concentrating almost fif ty hórreos and
paneras, in Morcín we find the Monsacro, a singular
mountain with two primitive temples in the middle
of a landscape of breathtaking beauty, and in Riosa
you cannot miss visiting the A ngliru, a mythical
peak in the w orld of cycling. Mieres, one of the
mining capitals of Spain, br ings together its
industrial heritage with magnificent examples like
the Settlement of Bustiello, with its landscape and
ethnographic wealth in valleys such as that of Cuna
and Cenera. The municipality of Lena treasures the
pre-Romanesque marvel of Santa Cristina de Lena
and it preserves the richness of its great landscape
in its higher areas, as in Aller where its lowest area,
full of industrial heritage examples, is followed by
magnificent mountain spaces waiting to be
discovered.
The Nalón Valley is one of the " Meccas" of the
earliest industrialisation in Spain and its legacy lives
on in these lands. In Langreo, the Iron and Steel
Museum (MUSI), the Samuño Valley Ecomuseum or
a visit to its city centre are essential to understand
the imprint of industrial activity on this c ouncil.
Upstream is San Martín del Rey Aurelio, where the
Mining and Industry Museum (MUMI) stands out
due to its own accomplishments. Following the
course of the Nalón, the footprint of industry slowly
fades, in this way passing through the municipalities
of Laviana, where it is possible to recreate the novel
"La Aldea Perdida" (The Lost Hamlet) by Palacio
Valdés, and Sobrescobio, where the Redes Natural
Park commences extending along the c ouncil of
Caso where the rural mountain habitat overwhelms
your senses.

T
he east of A sturias is eternal, the landscape seeming t o have
always been there dominating everything and wanting to show,
on a thin strip of land, all the possibilities a paradise offers. A splendid
coast coexists here with the imposing moun tains of the P icos de
Europa being their summit, everything being extremely close here,
offering the chance to go from the sky blue of the highest peaks t o
the most crystalline waters of its beaches in a blink of your eyes. Also
eternal because, since the Palaeolithic, the human c ommunities
inhabiting this territory have left their tracks, as did the dinosaurs
which populated it.
Cider is the A sturian drink par e xcellence and the c ouncils of
Villaviciosa, Colunga, Sariego, Cabranes, Nava and Bimenes ar e
consecrated to it, having formed the Cider Region. The old historic
centre of Villaviciosa, its fishing village of Tazones, the Monastery of
Valdediós with its "Conventín" and Sietes, with its extremely notable
set of centenary hórreos and paneras, are all milestones of this council
looking out onto its marvellous estuary. Colunga may be considered
the Jurassic capital of Asturias as it houses the Jur assic Museum of
Asturias (MUJA), although it has many other attractions like the fishing
village of Lastres, with an unequalled historical set used to film the
"Doctor Mateo" television series. Towards the south we find Sariego
with its Romanesque churches of San Román, Santiago el Mayor and
Santa María de Narzana; Cabranes with its magnificent Rural School
Museum; and Bimenes with its "Route of Mills" or its "House of Radios",
illustrating the radio broadcasting phenomenon; and finally Nava,
where the Cider Museum constitutes a real experience.
Advancing towards the East from Nava, we get to Piloña, a council
opening the Eastern Region of Asturias. There are thirteen municipalities
making up this eastern end of Asturias, where the limestone mountains
seem to hurl themselves directly into the sea. The attraction of Piloña,
Lakes of Covadonga
Bridge of Cangas de Onís
to the East
housing one of the most important Neanderthal sites
in the world (Sidrón Cave), lies in its landscape and
ethnography, highlighting the high concentration of
hórreos and paneras of Espinaréu; apart from notable
examples of noble rural architecture. Caravia, with its
spectacular beaches, takes you to other times, strolling
between its Indiano architecture buildings. Arriondas
is the capital of Parres, a council that, apart from being
the starting point for the formidable "Les Piragües"
Fiesta along the river Sella, we find the now historical
"Mirador del Fito" with a spectacular panoramic view
of the sea, the Sierra del Sueve and the Picos de Europa.
Following the trails of the canoes on the Sella we reach
its mouth, Ribadesella. Here is the Tito Bustillo Cave
(World Heritage) with its innovative Rupestrian Art
Centre, but Ribadesella also means its sandy area of
Santa Marina dotted with magnificent small palaces,
its old historic centre declared a Heritage of Cultural
Interest and its Paseo de la Grúa, one of the prettiest
in the North of Spain where the artist Mingote left his
imprint in the form of six large ceramic panels.
Further to the East is the municipality of Llanes,
whose capital is a real master class of architecture
from the Middle Ages up until the 20th c entury.
Considered a Heritage of Cultural Interest, this fishing
village maintains its medieval walls and tower. The
contemporary nature of this hist orical set w as
achieved by the intervention of Agustín Ibarrola with
his "Cubes of M emory" in the Llanes har bour.
Llanes is the town in itself, an incomparable series
PICOS DE EUROPA (Picos de Europa National Park)
The council of Onís enters slightly more into that great
mass of limestone forming the Picos de Europa (Picos de
Europa National Park), where we can visit the Glacier Fauna
Interpretation Centre in the "Cuevona" (large cave) of Avín;
with a setting and audiovisual effects fully introducing us
into that world. Further to the East follows Cabrales, the
name associated with the excellent cheese prepared here
since ancient times and to the mythical mountains of
these peaks such as the Urriellu (also known as Naranjo
de Bulnes); although Cabrales also treasures a rich
construction heritage with admirable large houses and
religious buildings such as Santa María de Llas. Asturias
reaches its end in the councils of Peñamellera Alta and
Peñamellera Baja, but not without before leaving magic
testimonies of this land, such as the evocative ruins of the
San Pedro church of Pleicín or the La Vidre Bridge in
Trescares, both in Peñamellera Alta; and La Loja Cave with its Didactic Classroom - or localities such as Panes or
Buelles with their willow plantations in the council of
Peñamellera Baja.
of fiestas from any point of view and its beaches and
villages such as Balmor i, Porrúa, Barro, Celorio…
unforgettably remaining in the memory of its visitors.
Ribadedeva is at the boundary of the Asturian coast,
but before leaving there is still a lot to be done like
visiting El Pindal Cave and its Interpretation Centre,
together with the I ndianos Archive Foundation Emigration Museum in Colombres, where one gets
to understand the scope of those leaving Asturias
to "make their fortune in America" and the dimension
of their legacy.
Inside it is wher e the moun tain is f elt more
intensely and we touring it from West to East, always
towards the orient. Ponga, where the Peloño Forest
Reserve awakens absolute fascination, and Amieva,
where the Picos de Europa open their doors, being
surprised by the Route of El Beyu Pen along which
you will encounter mythological Asturian characters.
More to the East we find Cangas de Onís, that which
once was the first capital of the Kingdom of Asturias,
whose territory is full of legends and proper names
linked to the birth of this kingdom such as Pelayo,
Santa Eulalia de Abamia, Favila or the Chapel of Santa
Cruz. Its Roman Bridge, the Sanctuary of Covadonga
and the Lakes ar e three of the lar ge icons of the
Principality. Here, in the Mountain of Covadonga, is
the origin and hear t itself of wha t was the First
Spanish National Park in 1918, currently known as
the Picos de Europa.
