Maritime transport is

Despite its many advantages,
transport by sea and their facilities
bring other less positive
consequences on the quality
of air and water, biodiversity
and climate change.
NEREIDAS is an action to develop
a standardization tool for the
implementation of preventive
and compensatory measures
for environmental damage related
to transport and port activities. BY STRENGTHENING

Its overall aim is to analyse
and test the deployment of integrated
solutions to minimize CO2 emissions,
biodiversity reduction and external
costs in Mediterranean ports
by biological technologies, sensors
and numerical methods. In order
to validate the results and expand
them to other Mediterranean ports,
steps towards a new standardization
will be provided. Other similar
Mediterranean ports can benefit from
NEREIDAS as a tool for their own
infrastructure plans, as well as help
in their transformations
into a low carbon environment.

Network (TEN- T) objectives, paving
the way to meet the target of 60%
reduction of CO2 emission by 2050;
as well as the Directive 2011/92/

ENVIRONMENTAL PORT
IMPACT ANALYSIS
The Identification of different ecosystem risks and
the best practice in ecosystem management
linked to the ports. This will lead to establishing a
detailed conceptual framework for ecosystem risk
management.
ACTIVITY 2
FIRST STUDY PHASE:
PROPOSAL OF POSSIBLE
SOLUTIONS TO REDUCE POLLUTION
CAUSED BY TRANSPORTS AND PORTS ACTIVITIES
IN THE MEDITERRANEAN ECOSYSTEM
Solutions to the ecosystem risks will be proposed.
The design of the selected solutions including
technologies to mitigate climate change and loss
of biodiversity in port areas and CO2 monitoring
network will be part of the prototypes to be
developed.
ACTIVITY 3
PILOT PHASE: PREPARATION
AND DEPLOYMENT
OF THE PROTOTYPES
The construction and deployment of the
NEREIDAS prototypes, will demonstrate the
effectiveness of the selected solutions which aim
to minimize the risks that port activities cause on
the ecosystems.

SECOND STUDY PHASE:
TOWARDS CERTIFICATION
& ADAPTATION OF
METHODS IN PORTS
A protocol will be designed in order to define a
new suitable environmental certification for the
Mediterranean ports. This protocol will be useful
for ports who wish to expand their infrastructures
as they intend to streamline their activities in a
low carbon environment.

DISSEMINATION AND
COMMUNICATION
NEREIDAS will disseminate information on the
project through several workshops to ensure that
stakeholders actively participate in the project.
ACTIVITY 6
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
The management strategy will ensure the
execution, performance, coordination and
implementation, the delivery of results and the
communication among the beneficiaries and the
European Commission. It will undertake the
appropriate actions to ensure the project’s
success and implementation. It will be supported
by all of the partners.

Melilla Port Authority
The Port Authority of Melilla is integrated in the Spanish Port System
which includes 46 Ports of General Interest, managed by 28 Port
Authorities. Melilla’s unique geographical features make the port a
key factor in the economic development of the city and it therefore
features in both the City’s and those of the Port Authority’s strategic
plans. Moreover Melilla is a key stone for the European Union in
Maghreb.
Philippe Cousteau Foundation
The objectives of the Philippe Cousteau “Union of the Oceans” Foundation, are the preservation of the marine environment and biodiversity, the international cooperation, the sustainable development
with regard to fisheries and aquaculture and the promotion of the
marine culture.
CIMNE
The International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering
(CIMNE) is an autonomous research and development center aim
to promoting and fostering advances in the development and application of numerical methods and computational techniques for the
solution of engineering problems via international cooperation.
CIMNE currently employs 170 scientists from 25 different countries.
University of Murcia (UMU)
Is a public institution devoted to providing higher education and the
most important research organization in the Region of Murcia. The
UMU has more than 29,000 students, with a teaching staff of 2,612
professors spread over 4 campuses. The institution counts with the
European and International Research Projects Office (OPERUM) to
participate in the different international programs.
ATISAE:
Is a business group dedicated to the provision of “conformity assessment”, specially the verification of compliance with the regulations issued by public authorities in the field of Industrial Safety,
Vehicle Inspection, Construction, Environment, Energy and Occupational Health and Safety.
