Spring 2012 - JCC of Greater Rochester
Rochester’s Headquarters for
Functional Fitness at the JCC!
Cutting-Edge Classes, State-of-the-Art Equipment, Professional Staff
We’ll have you “Training with Purpose!”
Functional training involves movements that are specific — in terms of mechanics, coordination,
and/or energetics — to your activities of daily living. Functional training is a way to train the whole
body to get stronger, faster, and be more efficient and prepared to meet functional demands on our
everyday lives. Life is three-dimensional, so we have to integrate movement patterns by training
in all three planes. People reach, bend, lean, turn, twist, stoop, and change directions constantly.
Imagine how many groceries you can lift with the strength you build from lifting kettlebells, how
great your balance will be on the icy sidewalk after lunging with one foot in the TRX,
how easily you could swing your child around after swinging a 100-foot
rope, and how light that rock you pick up from your garden will feel after
you have been flipping tractor tires! We take all the movements that make
up your life to the extreme in our Functional Training Studio and cuttingedge Group Fitness classes to make all the hours spent outside the gym
easier. We don’t just want you to have a great body . . . we want you to have a
body that WORKS!
Here’s what we have going on every week:
FUNCTIONAL TRAINING STUDIO (FTS)
Each month, we offer a special “Workout of the Month.” Our Certified Personal
Trainers will be staffing the room at several convenient times each week to show
you a killer workout using the equipment in the FTS. Each session will be the
exact same workout for the entire month in order to give you plenty of time to
really understand your technique. Hours will be posted outside the studio. The
FTS is open for your personal use and during all open Fitness Center hours.
Group Fitness Classes:
FIVE
Mondays and Thursdays, 4:30pm
This class will give you a killer workout with a simple premise:
complete five reps of five different exercises using different
equipment and body weight. Each week will be a new challenge.
KETTLEBELLS
Tuesdays, 5:45pm
Thursdays and Saturdays, 12:15pm
Join us for dynamic training that delivers an intense, full-body
workout in half the time of a traditional workout. This class uses
dynamic movements incorporating kettlebells. Different weights and kettlebell styles are available.
TRAIN RAW (ROPES ANYWHERE WORKOUT)
Wednesdays, 5:45pm
It’s fast, furious, and functional! Our newest class uses ropes of varying thickness, length, and
weight. Swing, jump, and slam your way to a whole new level of fitness!
HIGH-INTENSITY TRAINING
Thursdays, 5:45pm
This is a challenging class designed to wake up all your muscles.
It includes intense circuit training using various tools, such as
speed/agility ladder, super bands, TRX, sledge hammers, tractor
tires, and more.

We are pleased to report that we have recently implemented an Employee of
the Month recognition program in order to recognize our staff for exemplary
performance. We seek to acknowledge those whose efforts embody our standards for
excellence and customer service, and have inspired and supported the performance
and achievement of others. JCC staff nominate coworkers by choosing specific
examples of performance that meet one or more of the following criteria and …
• Demonstrates a positive impact on the staff and/or members at the JCC.
• Produces business results in the form of increased productivity, increased revenues,
reduced costs, and/or improved processes/operations benefiting the department as
well as member satisfaction.
• Demonstrates positive attitude, cooperation, initiative, and/or flexibility that reflect
improvements in member services.
• Provides a significant contribution toward improved workforce cohesiveness, pride,
morale, and/or enthusiasm in working at the JCC.
• Demonstrates the JCC’s values of integrity, accountability, quality, professionalism,
and commitment to performance of duties in meeting at least one of the JCC’s
strategic priorities or linkage to all of them.
Please join us in congratulating the following employees who have been chosen by a
staff recognition committee as Employees of the Month.

Tricia Pilato (November)
In November, Tricia Pilato received

significantly reduced costs and

Brian Dengler (December)
He is not the King of Rock and Roll, but he is the King of Pickleball! Brian Dengler
did a fantastic job of starting the Pickleball program from nothing, organizing
lunchtime open play, and administering the Pickleball league. He provided an
excellent opportunity for members and non-members to compete in a friendly and
fun environment. Brian encouraged non-members to join the JCC — and many
ended up doing so. He did this all at very little cost, arranging for equipment to be
obtained for free and finding a member to donate money for an additional net.

Barb Conklin (January)
Barb Conklin has done an amazing job of leading her team through the transition
from Go-Getters to Silver&Fit®. She has made every effort to work with staff,
members, and health agencies to ensure that the transition is as painless as possible
for members and the financial impact toward the JCC is optimal. Without Barb’s
leadership and concerted effort, the change could have been devastating.

Camp Seneca Lake Campers
Raise Money for Children in Need
This past summer, the campers in C-1—boys entering 3rd
and 4th grade—started a store to raise money for tzedakah
(charity). They began by cleaning spare change. As leader Eli
Curwin explained, “Everybody knows coins are dirty,” and he
wanted to help people while keeping them healthy. The project
soon expanded into a store that sold food and other small
items, all donated by fellow campers and staff. By the end of
the session the store boasted an unbelievable profit of $100.75
and had honored their “Employee of the Month,” Ezra ***, the
cashier. When speaking about the project, Eli was quick to
highlight the store as a team effort, and praised the generosity
and support of his bunkmates and village. Eli is already making
plans to expand next summer, including a vigorous advertising
campaign. He hopes to raise $1000 by his senior camper
summer. The group has decided to allocate the funds to support
Rochester-area children in need.
C-1’s initiative is reflective of
a growing Camp Seneca Lake
emphasis on tikun olam, the
Jewish value of “repairing the
world.” Just days before launching
their store, C-1 campers participated in
CSL’s third annual Tikun Olam Day. This full-day program
provides campers with hands-on opportunities to make a
difference. Past activities include painting a mural, making fleece
blankets for sick infants, and helping puppy guide dogs learn how
to behave in a group. CSL is proud to have helped inspire Eli’s
initiative and looks forward to seeing great things from the entire
C-1 gang.
Physical Therapy at the JCC
Will Keep You Moving
“One of the most rewarding
things about being a

receive his physical therapy there, too. Steve went to visit the
Outpatient Rehab Center and was impressed with the quality of
the facility, gym, and equipment. Both Steve and Corinne were
unaware that the Jewish Home also had an Outpatient Rehab
satellite clinic at the JCC, right where Steve works and exercises.
The convenience and reputation made choosing physical therapy
at the JCC an easy decision.
Steve works part-time at the JCC and is an active runner and
cyclist. His girlfriend, Corinne Beach, is also an active athlete.
Corinne had knee surgery in 2009 and again in 2010 on the
other knee — and went to Outpatient Rehab at the Jewish Home
of Rochester for intensive physical therapy, which resulted in
a speedy recovery due to her dedication and the support from
her physical therapist. Corinne highly recommended that Steve
When Steve started physical therapy, he could not even lift his
arm, and now he can raise his arm over his head. Today Steve
exercises every day, teaches spinning at the JCC, and belongs to
various running and cycling groups in Rochester. “Joe was very
thorough and he’s a cool guy,” said Steve.

IMAGINING MADOFF
March 10 thru 25
Welcome to the world of Bernie Madoff.
2011/2012 SEASON
This new play by Obie Award-winning dramatist,
Deborah Margolin imagines the inner workings of the
quietly bold and privately crass man who orchestrated
the world’s most infamous ponzi scheme. Meet him in
jail working his manipulation skills on a biographer.
Be a fly on the wall during his private meeting with a
renowned Holocaust survivor who becomes one of his
most notable victims. Witness the massive carnage
in his wake as his executive secretary testifies before
the Securities and Exchange Commission. Imagining
Madoff is a poetic examination of morality and the
power of blind trust.

The true story of Leo Frank, a Jewish factory manager

Broadway composer Jason Robert Brown (The Last
Five Years, 13, Songs for a New World) and a powerful
book by Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy) this highly
acclaimed musical is at once a riveting murder mystery,
a gripping courtroom drama, a moving love story,
a profile in courage and a searing social commentary.

Rochester Children's Theatre and JCC present:
CenterStage Shows Reprised
by Area Theatres
In 2010, JCC CenterStage was the first theatre in the United
States to license the new Canadian musical, My Mother’s
Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, and helped the authors to
revise the show for the American market. The show was a
record-breaking hit at the JCC in December 2010, selling out
every seat to nearly every performance. After the success at
CenterStage, the show has been since picked up by multiple
regional theatres in the United States and Canada. This
summer, the show returns to the area for a new production at
the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse in Auburn, N.Y.
JCC CenterStage has also been invited to revive The Lady
With All The Answers, the acclaimed production about
advice maven Ann Landers. Susan Hopkins will reprise
her performance at the Bristol Valley Theatre for two
performances on May 19 and 20. Both of these productions
were directed by CenterStage Artistic Director Ralph Meranto.
